Stehlíková, Štěpánka January 2018 (has links)
The thesis, Medial image of a "refugee" in czech press deals with analysis of the image of a "refugee", which is introduced to the czech public via printed media. In theoratical part of my thesis I describe a manner, in which the reality is beeing constructed an what are the mechanisms of media cummunication. Below I explain a way in which are in social and political discourse perceived concepts concerning the so called refugee crisis and then I describe an evolution of the migration on the europian continent. In the research part of my thesis were for specific documentation of the image of a refugee chosen two time periods: The second half of the year 2015 as an apex of the refugee crisis and the second half of the year 2017 where this so called crisis slowly diminishes. With a help of qualitative content analysis of the newspaper articles of theese two periods I research what image of a "refugee" the media had constructed and how that image changed in time. The media chosen for this analysis are the daily newspaper Blesk and the daily newspaper Mladá fronta DNES, because a half of the readers reads one of theese journals, therefore they can influence perception of the image of a refugee with the largest number of the readers. In my thesis I also focus on differences in medial communication of...

"Až přijdou do Prahy, bude pozdě" Obsahová analýza mediálních sdělení zaměřených na tzv. migrační krizi a její genderový rozměr / "When they arrive, it will be too late" Content Analysis of Media Messages Focused on the So-called Migration Crisis and its Gender Dimension

Němečková, Michaela January 2019 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the presentation of the so-called migration and refugee crisis of 2015- 2016 in the news coverage published by the main Czech daily newspapers. The thesis is a gender analysis of media messages during that period. In the framework of this thesis, I have analysed through qualitative content analysis written media reports as well as photographs of newly arrived migrants and other visual materials published in the media in order to illustrate migrants in Czech daily newspapers Blesk, Lidove noviny, Mlada fronta Dnes, and Pravo during the month of January 2016. The thesis focuses on how masculinity/femininity is constructed in media messages. Furthermore, the thesis looks into the construction and representation of otherness through media messages dedicated to so-called migration crisis. The aim of the thesis is to critically assess how newly arrived migrants are depicted by the main four Czech dailies, and to analyse and explain the mechanisms through which certain characteristics associated with newly arrived migrants are emphasised or suppressed. Key words: Media - gender - masculinity - femininity - migration - migration crisis - refugee crisis - religion - ethnicity - otherness

The EU Relocation Scheme : The Visegrad group’s resistance of the EU relocation scheme

Sayed Abdu, Nemma January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this case study is to use Ian Manner’s normative power theory and Adrian Hyde-Price’s neo-realism theory, in order to explain the Visegrad countries’ resistance against the EU relocation. There is great tension within the EU on how to handle the migration and refugee crisis. The efforts to establish EU relocation plan were extremely controversial since the European Commission adopted legislation directly related to territorial integrity and state sovereignty through qualified majority. The main opponents of the relocation scheme are the Visegrad group (Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia). This paper concluded that Ian Manner’s theory on Normative Power Europe is limited in explaining the Member States resistance, rather Adrian Hyde-Price’s theory on neorealism is more accurate in explaining the resistance.

How do we address the European refugee crisis through employment and integration in an urban environment? : What architectural tactics can we use to support legal and illegal networks within a city?

Scott, Bethany January 2020 (has links)
A refugee faces many issues on their journey to safety, but the issues do not end once they reach a host country. Applying for asylum is an arduous process with long waiting times in most European countries, and a low acceptance rate. Lack of integration into a new community is one of the main issues faced during this time. Studies show that labour market opportunities are a successful tool to aid integration and help to close the employment gap between native residents and new arrivals. The employment gap exists due to lack of local language, employment connections, transference of existing skills, legal issues, and personal and health issues. This paper argues that early commencement of language learning, transference of qualifications and picking up the necessary new skills for employment, is a positive way to use the long waiting time to benefit asylum seekers. It is also important to support newly accepted refugees during their integration into the community. Reflecting on organisations and networks that currently exist for refugees, a new civic space is proposed in the city to improve the integration of users through labour market training and opportunities. Looking at the legislations in place for integration and existing pathways to residency, an example is shown of how it can be manipulated to encourage involvement in the labour market.

Refugees’ physical and mental health, after arriving in Sweden: An unfolding process : A Qualitative case study on the dilemmas with refugee facilities

Fawaz, Helen January 2021 (has links)
This case study touches on the development of refugees’ mental and physical health from their stays in the refugee facilities during and after the limbo process for a temporary and permanent visa, which in turn affected their socioeconomic integration. Seven refugees and their families that came to Sweden during the refugee crisis in 2015-2016 and were moved to a facility where I worked, were interviewed on how those issues impacted them. With the help of Egon Kunz’s [Refugee Theory] theory, the study showed that constant relocation to different facilities in Sweden, and experienced events and conflicts at the facilities have resulted in long-term health and socioeconomic problems. Such as PTSD, mental and physical recovery from occurred events at the facilities, in turn, negatively affecting socioeconomic integration. Additional research in those issues showed that other countries like Germany, which also had a large influx of refugees during that time, had better and faster success with integration when they helped the refugees with the language and societal information at the beginning of limbo. Because their interest in learning and integrating is higher, and the health and integration issues are much lower than when refugees are sometimes forced to wait at least two years, which is what some of the participants and other refugees in this study did before starting SFI, integration programs and have their own private place live in.  The temporary visa, especially with no help to integrate, caused the lack of interest in learning the language; socioeconomic integration, mainly when the person was alone with no family. Moreover, their developed health from their time at the facilities is still a recovering process.

Sovereignty Versus Solidarity : A Case Study on the Border Controls in Sweden Following the 2015 Refugee Crisis in the EU

Koch, Cecilie January 2022 (has links)
This thesis explores how the concepts of sovereignty and solidarity are affected by and influence each other within the institutional framework of the European Union. It does so by conducting a case study of the border controls that were implemented in Sweden during the refugee crisis of 2015 and utilizing a theoretical framework based on the theories of Europeanisation and De-Europeanisation. The theories explain the integration and de-integration processes that can happen between supranational and national actors. Examining data in the form of policy documents from the Swedish government, the thesis employs the method of qualitative content analysis which aims at identifying the rhetoric surrounding refugees, the cooperation of Sweden and the EU, as well as border controls in a condensed time period from May to December of 2015. The thesis finds that in line with existing academic debates, sovereignty and solidarity are both ambiguous concepts that are applied in a various of contexts; the data reflects infringements on sovereignty on the basis of solidarity as well as statements claiming that sovereignty is a fundamental principle of multilateral cooperation.

The radical policy changes in the labour market integration in Sweden and Germany after the 2015 refugee crisis.

Husell, Myriam January 2023 (has links)
This study offers a comprehensive comparative analysis of labour market integration policies for refugees in Sweden and Germany following the 2015 refugee crisis. Adapting an institutional approach that includes new historical institutionalism, rational choice institutionalism and sociological institutionalism, this study analyses the policy changes in both countries. The research design is a most similar design to compare and find differences and similarities in both countries, and the methodology is a qualitative comparative analysis. The research concentrates on the elements of policy change – displacement, layering, conversion and drift- to explain the modifications in response to the crisis. The study reveals significant similarities and differences between the two countries. Both Sweden and Germany implemented strategies to support refugee integration into the labour market, although with different approaches. The historical legacies, societal perspectives, and institutional frameworks of each country influenced the execution of these policies.

Textual and visual analysis of the refugee crisis through four European newspapers

Mavraganis, Christos January 2016 (has links)
The refugee crisis is an ongoing challenge for the European Union. Refugees from the Middle East, the majority of them Syrians, are risking their own and their children’s lives, putting their money –both figuratively and literally speaking- on the chance of surviving the almost six-year long war in Syria. The brutal death of thousands of refugees in the Aegean Sea’s waters was the reason why the EU mechanisms have started to mobilize seeking a solution. The ‘problem’ was not possible to be hidden under the carpet anymore. It was reaching the highly developed Europe’s doorstep. The media coverage of the crisis has started to emerge in a greater extent throughout 2015, as a result of the ‘explosive’ increase of the refugee flows. In the beginning it was just a synthesis of innumerous personal tragedies, before it became an official European ‘problem’.If we ‘leap’ through time and refer on today, we can observe that the massive death toll in the Mediterranean was only the starting point of a vicious circle, which is strongly related with developmental, political and communication issues.Through this thesis my goal was to examine how four European newspapers (which represent both Europe’s North and South) have reported on the biggest humanitarian crisis in Europe since the World War II. What strikes me as a very interesting aspect is that the refugees, as representatives of the developing countries have come in the territory of the European developed countries. Therefore I believe that there is space for a wide development dialogue and I would like to examine at what point the media seized this opportunity to reflect on development issues, through their cover stories.I have performed a combination of quantitative/qualitative methods of analysis. A full scale content analysis of 85 articles has been performed as the quantitative part and this was my primary research method. My secondary method of analysis was about the visual elements used by the newspapers and I have relied on semiotics to examine 141 photographs.
