Brother or Threat? Swedish Women Reflect on Male Newcomers Since the Refugee Crisis of 2015

Uhlen, Laure January 2021 (has links)
In 2015, 70% of the asylum-seekers in Sweden were men. This skewed ratio combined with the image of the threatful male immigrant have raised a topical question within the most gender equal country and self-proclaimed feminist state. Through a gender perspective that has never been researched and which gives voice to Swedish women, this issue is investigated. In particular, it is relevant to consider how socially engaged Swedish women reflect on male newcomers who have arrived in Sweden since the 2015 refugee crisis. Alongside it is pertinent to investigate how those Swedish women assess the impact of the new arrivals on their lives and the society they live in. Using qualitative research, fifteen women are interviewed on account of their relevant opinion on the topic, their experience with refugees, their political stance and their work. The informants reminisce about the refugee crisis in Sweden and examine the characteristics of male newcomers, their empathy and support towards male newcomers, gender (in)equality and the impact of the arrival of male newcomers in Sweden. Results display a dense and complex picture of the viewpoints of Swedish women on the refugee crisis and the arrival of male newcomers to Sweden, between enthusiasm and prudence on the issue.

Bevakning och framställning av flyktingar i svensk press : En studie om skillnader och likheter mellan Dagens Nyheter och Aftonbladet i bevakning och framställning av flyktingar. / Monitoring and representing of refugees in Swedish press : A study on differences and similarities between Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet in the monitoring and representation of refugees.

Baker, Akon January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to determine how much the Swedish morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter and the evening newspaper Aftonbladet wrote about refugees and how they represented them during refugee crisis in September 2015 compared with when the border control began in January 2016. The purpose is to investigate how the news selection is been made, what events surrounding refugees became news and how they are described To be able to answer these questions I have combined two methods. The quantitative method used to observe how many articles were written about refugees, count and analize the number of the articles each newspaper produced during the mentioned period. In the qualitative section the rhetorical method by Karlberg & Mral's model (1998) ethos, pathos and logos concepts been used. In order to understand how the writer structured the text to convince the audience. The findnings of this study has been compared by each other and the reulst has showen a compiling differences and similarities between Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. Both newspapers have different flow of news articles during different periods. At some stag in the refugee crisis period in September 2015 Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet has shown solidarity with the refugees, but during the border control period in January 2016 both newspapers monitoring and representation of refugees was not as positive and as much as during the refugee crises.

The European union: united in diversity? : A comparative analysis of the European union's statements during the refugee crisis of 2015 (Syria) and 2022 (Ukraine), based on the directive of temporary protection (2001/55/EG).

Baum Husberg, Ines January 2023 (has links)
Since Russia's military invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Union (EU) has acted in a different and innovative manner. The cooperation has been united and expressed itself in new ways, such as activating the temporary protection directive, as well as making a historic decision to send lethal equipment to Ukraine. However, in previous refugee crises, the EU has acted upon the status quo and suffered from uneven distribution of responsibility between the member states. The absence of cooperation and the pursuit for a unified identity have challenged the European Union's motto of "United in diversity," thus prompting research to be conducted. This case study seeks to examine how the social constructivist perspective, with a collective approach, can contribute to an understanding of the EU, as a global actor. The aim is to shed light on motives and factors that may have influenced the decision-making of the European union. To achieve this, the study employs a methodological discourse analysis of public documents from diverse institutions, thus the primary source. The results reveal that the social constructivist perspective can visualise patterns in how the European union discusses the collective, depending on different occasions and who is granted legitimacy to do so. Additionally, the study advocates for further research from a social constructivist perspective and suggests the inclusion of rational choice institutionalism in future studies.

POLICYFÖRÄNDRING OCH FLYKTINGKRISEN 2015 : En jämförande textanalys av Socialdemokraternas valmanifest 2014 och 2018

Hedman, Rena January 2023 (has links)
This study intends to study how the Social Democrats' (S) migration policy changed between 2014 and 2018. Comparison is made through a text analysis of election manifestos to describe S's stance after the refugee crisis in 2015 in relation to refugees and migration. S worked up the 'problem' over the years and as solution policy changes were carried out in the economic, social and political contexts in connection with the state's situation, where ideas and beliefs were based on the previous experiences and events. The study will be carried out by describing and following up the change in S migration policy between 2014 and 2018 in Bacchi's constructivist perspective on ideas and problem formulations in what concepts represent. This approach is regarded as a process that is to some extent continuously socially constructed by the exchange of opinions of policy actors. These are ideas that help policy actors create meaning and understanding of the world around them, and thus they form a basis for which interests and action options the policy actors act for and against in the policy process (Ohlsson, et.al, 2019:259). That is, they are ideas that give policy actors a purpose of understanding what the policy problem is and what the solutions are. The idea and ideology analysis method is used in this study to be able to compare, see and understand the importance of ideas in the creation of politics, what interaction and non-interaction between ideas means and why this is important to follow up in connection with the state's situation. To understand how ideas and concepts were problematized and social formulated through time in connection with the state's situation, the three text analytical questions of Bacchi's WPR approach were chosen which enable interpretation of the background knowledge, underlying assumptions made by S all political proposals.

Implications of Populism on the European Union Immigration Legislation : Evidence from the Legislation adopted and implemented during the Eighth European Parliament (2014-2019)

Silva Campos, María Belén January 2022 (has links)
Populism is a phenomenon that impacts not only nation-states and their institutions but also the institutions of international-supranational organizations. This is the case of the European Union, where populist radical right parties (PRRPs) – the most predominant type of populism in Europe – reached the Parliament in 1984, consolidated in 2014, and have since then participated in the debates about the European legislation. Such participation has been mainly framed by the current functioning of the European Parliament (EP), which grants greater importance to alliances instead of individual Members of the Parliament, thereby, PRRPs cooperated among themselves in three groups: the European Conservatives and Reformists, the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy, and the Europe of Nations and Freedom.  Particularly in migration, a key area of interest of these parties because of their nativist and authoritarian characteristics, these alliances have specific positions and therefore, have promoted different strategies aimed at increasing the powers of member states by diminishing European integration, strengthening the EU external borders, and preventing the arrival of new immigrants, especially the illegal ones. This was particularly reinforced in the 8th parliamentary period that lasted from 2014 to 2019, which also coincided with the 2015 refugee crisis. In this context, the EP adopted and implanted various legislation to cope with the crisis, including the European Border and Coast Guard, the European travel document for the return of illegally staying third-country nationals, the Entry/Exit System, the European Travel Information and Authorization System, and the reinforcement of the mandate of the EU-LISA agency.  In 30.905 words, this research aims at understanding whether PRRPs’ characteristics and positions have influenced the EU immigration legislation, measured by how successful have been the two common strategies they undertake to do so: influencing the voters’ attitudes and opinions and obstructing parliamentary proceedings. Data shows that these groups still have a minority in the Parliament, do not vote together as a bloc, some of them do not actively participate in parliamentary work, and therefore, have limited power to impact the legislation as they can only do it indirectly by shaping the behavior of their electoral force.

Flyktingkrisen 2015 - en internationell diskussion eller en mänsklig katastrof? : En kritisk diskursanalys av Aftonbladets nyhetsartiklar.

Hägglöf, Hanna, Nilsson, Lina January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the swedish newspaper Aftonbladet constructed the discourse of the refugee crisis in Europe during the year 2015. By using a critical discourse analysis of nine articles the study was able to show how the newspaper portrayed the power relationship between the characters.   The following questions was examined: How does Aftonbladet construct the refugee crisis as an event? How is the relationships between the characters within the text portrayed?   The result showed that there were five different discourse patterns that appeared which constructed the refugee crisis as a problem and a threat for the European Union and the member countries. The relationship between the different characters within the text was embossed by hegemony because the refugees was represented as helpless and the authoritative countries talked about how the refugees affected their everyday life.   Therefore Aftonbladet embedded the refugees in archetypes and like they were subordinate to the national states, which lead to a portrayal of the crisis as a international discussion more than a catastrophy for humanity.

Topic Analysis of Tweets on the European Refugee Crisis Using Non-negative Matrix Factorization

Shen, Chong 01 January 2016 (has links)
The ongoing European Refugee Crisis has been one of the most popular trending topics on Twitter for the past 8 months. This paper applies topic modeling on bulks of tweets to discover the hidden patterns within these social media discussions. In particular, we perform topic analysis through solving Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) as an Inexact Alternating Least Squares problem. We accelerate the computation using techniques including tweet sampling and augmented NMF, compare NMF results with different ranks and visualize the outputs through topic representation and frequency plots. We observe that supportive sentiments maintained a strong presence while negative sentiments such as safety concerns have emerged over time.

The Refugee Discourse in German Media : An analysis of the changes provoked by the events of New Year’s Eve 2015 in Cologne

Braun-Klöpper, Anika January 2016 (has links)
The represeantation of refugees in the mainstream media in Germany is a vital part in the understanding of the cultural impact of the refugee crisis. What is written in the German mainstream media is of special interest in times where the press is denounced as "lying press" or "press of lies." This analysis takes a look at the refugee discourse before, during and after the events of New Year's Eve in Cologne and draws conclusions on the impact the attacks on women had on the media discourse.

Rozvojová a migrační politika jako nástroje soudobé turecké geopolitiky / Development and migration policy as instruments of contemporary Turkish geopolitics

Hlavatá, Nora January 2019 (has links)
One of the countries that has enjoyed great international interest in recent years is Turkey. The long period of passive foreign policy oriented primarily towards the West has been replaced in recent years by a very active foreign policy focused on its own region. Turkey has included new instruments and activities in its foreign policy that are more in line with the position of the Middle Power. Two of the foreign policy instruments that have become important in Turkey include development aid and migration policy, or more precisely its response to refugee crises. This is also due to the fact that, as a result of the Syrian crisis, Turkey currently hosts more than three million refugees on its territory. The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the changes in Turkey's migration and development policy in the context of its overall foreign policy, as well as the way in which these issues are used to increase its soft power. The more general goal is to try to use the findings to enrich the Two-Good Theory with soft power tools. The Two-Good Theory attempts to explain the behavior of states in terms of their inclination towards maintaining status quo or changing the status quo in different areas of international relations. As shown by the diploma thesis, Turkey used these tools to build its position,...
