Rocha, Karen Gomes da 24 August 2015 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the representations of the female figure in Presença de Thalia (1989), by Ruth Laus, a writer from Santa Catarina, dialoguing and relating to issues inherent to the identity and the space of fictional representations of gender, the female subject as a producer of texts and fictional character, as well as evaluates the interference of patriarchal ideology present in the novel. To seek answers to the question of what is the feminine, the analysis of masculine and feminine, among other combinatorial possibilities, enables a critical view through research and analysis, on breaking, or not, the mythical model of patriarchy. Therefore, it is analyzed the regional setting and its cultural interrelations in the novel, first, from theoretical assumptions regarding the region and regionality; then, combined with the perspective of feminist criticism, are used as subsidies the studies of Showalter (1994) and the anthropologists Bruner (1986) and Geertz (1989), in order to, by focusing on the female authorship text, that is, her expression, regarding the evaluation of family court and social power structures established fictionally, to unveil the conceptual structures and interpret the culture's fictional web of symbols; and, finally, basing the discussions on representation, identity and subjectivity with the assumptions of Chartier (2002) and Weedon (2003), reveal how female subjects are conceived.

Os entre em as margens e os cimos: estudos do espaço em João Guimarães Rosa / The "between" in the borders and pinnacle: studies of space in João Guimarães Rosa

Danese, Viviane Michelline Veloso 11 April 2014 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 texto completo.pdf: 677093 bytes, checksum: e687d7fd934edcdb22b3b2ba7f03209b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-04-11 / The present work consists in a research that turns around the meanings that the fictional space assumes in the Brazilian literature since its first manifestations and during colonial periods, until the third modernism's stage that corresponds to the generation of 45 that is inserted in the work of João Guimarães Rosa. In this sense, it is exposed a panoramic view of regionalism at Brazilian literature from the theoretical route presented by Antonio Candido that approaches the way how the fictional texts assume the space in its literal or symbolic dimension. In this last meaning, the range of the spatial focus incorporates proper elements from modernity as: the narrator, language and reader space. These elements are discussed in perspective of Rosa's work in a general way and more specifically in the short stories As margens da alegria e Os cimos, the first and last respectively from the book Primeiras estórias (1962). In the case of short stories, it is done a comparative analysis highlighting common aspects, notable in the structural composition; and differences evoked by the perception of childish character regarding space. The space is characterized as element that allows to conceive the immersion of the childish character as perceptive subject in a world socially shared. The character's displacement, as physical as internal, evokes the imagination and gives a sign to an existential learning. On the other hand, in the case of short story as genre, the narrative assumes an ambiguity associating fictional poetic and reality. Thus, it is also discussed aspects related to the production context of Guimarães Rosa's work, spatially linked to a more urban perspective, from a Brazil that had a strangeness of the modernization. The perception of the environment by the childish character emphasizes the study of fictional space in the short stories of Joao Guimarães Rosa.

Pós-modernismo e regionalidade no romance Glaucha

Weber, Raquel 20 August 2009 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-28T16:34:28Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Raquel Weber.pdf: 4682234 bytes, checksum: 8377ceda95fbe0e25229a74622ffaf41 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-28T16:34:28Z (GMT). The Binfords and Mort Publishing Company and the Development of Regional Literature in Oregon

Skinner, Jeremy 01 January 2011 (has links)
During the first half of the twentieth century there was a flourishing of publishers in the United States that specialized in books with content targeted for regional audiences. One of the largest regional publishers west of the Mississippi was the Binfords & Mort publishing company of Portland, Oregon. In 1930, Binfords & Mort began publishing works of fiction, history, poetry, children's literature, and natural history by Pacific Northwest authors with content focused on the Pacific Northwest. Between 1930 and 1984, when the Binford family sold the publishing company, Binfords & Mort published around one thousand titles, and became a one of the leading influences on the Oregon literary scene. Although Binfords & Mort did not publish books that received widespread critical praise from national literary critics, its books sold well to Oregon readers. This thesis examines the economic and cultural contexts for Binfords & Mort, and its larger cultural impacts. The thesis also challenges the standard claim that Oregon literature underwent a major shift toward modernism after the publication of H.L. Davis's and James Stevens's critique of Oregon writing, Status Rerum in 1927. Instead, the thesis proposes that by looking at the output of Oregon's most popular publisher, Binfords & Mort, one finds that an older style of writing focused on the pioneer period continued to be popular well into the twentieth century. These publications had a widespread impact on Oregon's cultural development.

Outside traditional book publishing centres : the production of a regional literature in Western Australia

Henningsgaard, Per Hansa January 2008 (has links)
This thesis provides a study of book publishing as it contributes to the production of a regional literature, using Western Australian publishing and literature as illustrative examples of this dynamic. 'Regional literature' is defined in this thesis as writing possessing cultural value that is specific to a region, although the writing may also have national and international value. An awareness of geographically and culturally diverse regions within the framework of the nation is shown to be derived from representations of these regions and their associated regional characteristics in the movies, television and books. In Australia, literature has been the primary site for expressions of regional difference. Therefore, this thesis analyses the impact of regionalism on the processes of book production and publication in Western Australia’s three major publishing houses— a trade publishing house (Fremantle Press), an Indigenous publishing house (Magabala Books), and an academic publishing house (University of Western Australia Press). Book history, print culture studies and publishing studies, along with literary studies and cultural studies, roughly approximate a disciplinary map of the types of research that constitute this thesis. By examining regional literature in the context of its 'field of cultural production', this thesis maintains that regionalism and regional literature can avail themselves of a fresh perspective that shows them to be anything but marginal or exclusive. Regionalism has been a topic of peripheral interest, at least as far as scholarly research and academia are concerned, because those who are most likely to be affected by and thus interested in the topic, are also those who are most disempowered as a result of its attendant dynamics. However, as this thesis clearly demonstrates, access (or a lack thereof) to the field of cultural production (which in the case of print culture includes writers, literary agents, editors, publishers, government arts organisations, the media, schools, book clubs, and book retailers, just to name a few) plays a significant role in establishing and shaping an identity for marginalised 3 constituencies. The implications for this research are far-ranging, since both Western Australia and Australia can be understood as peripheries dominated in their different spheres (the 'national' and the 'international', respectively) by literary cultures residing elsewhere. Furthermore, there are parallels between this dynamic and the dynamic responsible for producing postcolonial literatures. The three publishing houses detailed in this thesis are disadvantaged by many of the factors associated with their distance from the traditional centres of book publishing, while at the same time producing a regional literature that serves as a platform from which the state broadcasts its distinctive contributions to the cultural landscape and to a wider understanding of concepts such as space, place and belonging. These publishing houses changed the way in which Australians and others have come to know and think about 'Australia', re-routing public consciousness and the national imagination.

Modelski, Jaqueline 15 August 2016 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2016-11-23T15:36:15Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Jaqueline Modelski.pdf: 1377584 bytes, checksum: 5c06aba292ddfb13df6bd8e3f3feea8c (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2016-11-23T15:36:15Z (GMT).

Soppelsa, Fernanda Bondam 17 August 2015 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2015-11-27T17:11:31Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Fernanda Bondam Soppelsa.pdf: 1404862 bytes, checksum: c9db702a15ee99a35256e0741dba0f7c (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2015-11-27T17:11:31Z (GMT). He represents the regional oral modality of the English language in the speech of the characters in the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Aventuras de Tom Sawyer). This master’s thesis aims at comparatively analyzing parts of the original work by Mark Twain, published in 1876, and the translation made by Monteiro Lobato, from 1934. Using the concepts of regionality from Arendt (2012) and Stüben (2013), the objective of this research is to analyze the cultural characteristics of the original novel and verify how the translator, Lobato, transposes the text to the target language, Brazilian Portuguese. In addition, the translational techniques used by Monteiro Lobato are identified, based on the proposals by Vinay and Dalbernet (1971), Barbosa (1990) and Hurtado Albir (2001). Two languages are never enough alike to be considered representative of the same cultural reality, so it is possible to analyze whether there are losses and gains in translation, as confirmed by Bassnett (2005). Following the ideas systematized by Venuti (1995), this work analyzes to what extend the selected translation is a domestication or keeps the cultural elements from the original novel.
