Serum samples were collected from 841 dogs, whose participation in the study was allowed by their owners. The samples were analyzed by the Agar Gel Immunodiffusion Test. The dogs were clinically examined, whilst their owners were interviewed in order to obtain data on the animals and their raising. The associations between the explanatory variables and the infection were measured using the 2 test or Fisher exact test whenever necessary. All variables with p 0.20 at the bivariate analysis were included in the multivariable analysis by logistic regression. The backward elimination method was used to select the variables for statistical modeling. The level of significance to keep a variable in the final model was set at 5%. Seventeen (17) samples (2.0%) were reagent. The following variables were selected for the modeling: dogs with access to streets (p=0.03), ectoparasite infestation (p=0.03) tick infestation (p=0.005), reproductive activity (p=0.00001), contact with animals with reproductive problems (p=0.0009), sunlight (p=0.09), owner`s gender (p=0.16) and housing (p=0.12.In the final model, the variables tick infestation (OR= 5.47, IC 1.67- 17.86), reproductive activity (OR= 9.40, IC 2.88-30.65), contact with animals with reproductive problems (OR= 7.90, IC 2.18-28.64) and presence of sunlight inside the house (OR= 0.21, IC 0.06-0.64) remained statistically associated with seropositivity to B. canis, after confusing variables were controlled.. The clinical signs associated with the infection were abortion, scrotal dermatitis, eye alterations and presence of nodules. The results of this study suggest that canine brucellosis is a rare disease also in other similar populations, being linked to the variables associated with animal handling. This reconfirms the need of a good sanitary and reproductive management to prevent and control the disease. The detection of clinical signs associated with seropositivity to B. canis highlights the importance of a good anamnesis, as well as a detailed clinical examination of the dog upon its admittance to clinics.

Návrat dítěte z ústavní výchovy do rodiny / The regress of the children from the intitutional education bact to the family

Frenclová, Irena January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on the issue of the return of children from the institutional care back to the family with the support and cooperation with parents and social workers from social legal child protection and social stimulating services for parents with children. It is a theoretical empirical work based on experiences with realization the return of the child from the institutional care in the area of the town Litvínov. Apart from the practical experience according to the said social workers, the work is also based on the author's theoretical knowledge, which has been gained during the study of professional literature in the field of social pedagogy and by self-studying in the stated problematic. The thesis is focused on the family background, the family cure, the institutional care and activities of social workers during the period when the child was been returning into the family. The empirical part is an illustrational preview into the problematic of the return of children from the institutional care back to the family.

Samuel Beckett's Work in Regress: A study of the Fiction to 1953

Vandervlist, Harry A. 11 1900 (has links)
<p>This study shows how the narrative strategies of Beckett's early fiction, developed as a dialogical response to Joyce's work, lead to an implied critique of conventional notions of narrative and subjectivity. Beckett's work, the study argues, takes up the challenge posed by Joyce's "Work in Progress," and Beckett's individualistic reading of Proust, and finally "refus[es] the possibilities of modernist writing" (Said 50). Thus Beckett attempts an "impossible" fiction in which protagonists and narrators reject their roles, the presumption of audience interest is examined and sacrificed, and the speaker's power over language radically questioned. Consequently, More Pricks than Kicks, Murphy, watt, Malone Dies and The Unnameable demonstrate the fictional potential of rejected and "impossible" tactics such as silence, futility, and apparent incompetence.</p> <p>The study demonstrates that the isolated individualism of Beckett's protagonists is associated with a breakdown of language and self, a process that provides a fictional anticipation of the theoretical view that language removed from either actual or conventional situations of utterance and reply ("writing" as opposed to speech) becomes an autonomous sign-system which remains silent about questions of self and identity. (Since it is only in human dialogue, in taking up an anchored subject-position within language, that a speaker's subjectivity can emerge). Beckett's protagonists, seeking to maintain their distance from the social distribution of subject positions, and seeking to propagate their personal monologue outside any dialogue, find themselves lost in a "moment before speech," or in language without parole, and thus are unable to base their own subjectivity in the unmoored or ungrounded discourse they inhabit. To explicate these implicit ideas, I turn to theorists of language and the self such as Emile Benveniste and Jacques Lacan (whose ideas were developing at the same time as Beckett was writing the works treated: in Paris in the 1930's). iv</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Défense et illustration de l'infinitisme épistémique

Lévesque, Marc-André 09 1900 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the problem of epistemic regression which questions the possibility of justification. For this reason we’ll take interest in the details of epistemic regression and in the solutions that different critics offer to solve the problem. Generally, two positions oppose each other : foundationalism and coherentism. The first one proposes to stop the regression at a foundation, as the second one takes concern about the coherence shared amongst the beliefs. However the purpose of this dissertation is to present and defend a third position : infinitism. Introduced in the 1990’s by Peter Klein, infinitism is one of the most recent theories of justification. Although it is quite appealing, Klein’s theory is not very popular and few people defend this position. Infinitism offers to solve the problem of regression by basing the justification of the beliefs on series of infinite and non repetitive reasons. Consequently, infinitism reverses the initial problem because infinite regression is often perceived as an issue for knowledge and a source for scepticism. Our goal is to demonstrate that infinitism is the best way to solve the problem of epistemic regression. Therefore, we’ll synthesize the arguments in favor of infinitism and that will mark out three types of infinitism from which we’ll retain one, an impure form of infinitism, as best suited to answer the problem of regression. Finally we’ll respond to the main oppositions to infinitism in order to demonstrate that it is in fact a viable theory of justification.

The aim of this study was to identify these parasites and their frequencies, and to verify the factors associated with infection. From November 2003 to September 2004 five-hundred dogs presented to three veterinary establishments in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro were evaluated. A form was filled for each dog, including information obtained from physical examination and from the interview of the owner, approaching factors related to the dog, the management and the owner. One fecal sample from each dog was examined by centrifugal flotation and centrifugal sedimentation methods and stained by safranin-methylene blue technique. Data obtained from physical exams and interviews, as well as the results of fecal parasitological exams, were submitted to bivariate analysis and, after the selection of significant variables (p=0.05), multivariate analysis was performed, using logistic regression. Gastrointestinal parasites were detected in 46.4% of the dogs. Hookworms (15.2%), ascarids (7.4%), whipworms (5.0%), Dipylidium caninum (0.2%), taeniids (3.0%), Cryptosporidium sp. (26.2%), Cystoisospora sp. (4.4%) and Giardia sp. (2.6%) were observed in the fecal samples. Protozoans (29.6%) were more frequently observed than helminths (23.2%). Age of the animal (p<0.001), access to soil (p<0.001), ambient hygiene (p<0.01) and pro-oestrous (p<0.05) were associated with infections with gastrointestinal parasites. Access to soil (p<0.001), anthelmintic usage (p<0.01), owner s school level (p<0.01), age of the animal (p<0.01), pro-oestrous (p<0.01) and breed (p<0.05) were associated with infections with helminthes. Age of the animal (p<0.001) and ambient hygiene (p<0.01) were associated with infections by protozoans. Frequency of gastrointestinal parasites in dogs was high and infections were associated with factors related to the animal, to the management and to the owner. A idade do animal (p<0,001), o acesso ? terra (p<0,001), a higiene do ambiente (p<0,01) e o pr?-estro (p<0,05) estiveram associados ? infec??o por parasitos gastrintestinais.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2016 - Cristina Fernandes do Amarante.pdf: 776756 bytes, checksum: 758e9e88a96110176bd0dff013f8c6ac (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-03 / CNPq / This study aimed to assess the factors involved in the determination of ecological events, including parasite aggregation, abundance, and dominance, via multivariate analysis using fish as a biological model. For this purpose, we used a database consisting of 3,746 fish specimens collected on the coast of Rio de Janeiro and from the Guandu river and evaluated their characteristics, habits, and associated parasites. Parasites were grouped into seven higher taxa: Nematoda, Monogenea, Cestoda, Trematoda, Acanthocephala, Hirudinea, and Crustacea. Aggregation was calculated using the dispersion index; abundance was determined by calculating the total number of parasites; and dominance was calculated using the Berger-Parker index. Data normality was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test; group comparisons, when necessary, were performed using the Wilcoxon test or the Kruskal-Wallis test. Adjustments were made in the linear regression models for parasite aggregation in each parasite taxon evaluated and in the mixed-effect models to evaluate abundance and dominance using Poisson and Gaussian distributions, respectively. The factors inherent to the hosts, including sex, size, habitats, formation of schools, eating habits, and aquatic environments, were tested as potential explanatory variables of these ecological events. In addition, the parasite development stage and parasite taxa were included as explanatory variables in the analysis of the determinants of aggregation and dominance, respectively. In the mixed-effects model, the ecological events were considered an outcome variable, and fish species were considered a random variable. Regression coefficients were calculated in the study of aggregation, and parasite dominance and prevalence rate were estimated in the study of abundance. Significance was determined using confidence intervals (CI) and the Wald test. All calculations were performed using R software with a confidence interval of 95%. Statistically significant associations between levels of parasite aggregation and explanatory variables (factors inherent to the host and the percentage of larvae) varied according to the parasite taxon. The coefficient of determination was lower than 60% in all of the adjusted models, indicating that factors other than those analyzed may be associated with the level of parasite aggregation. Parasite abundance was significantly associated with sex, formation of schools, habitats, and host length, which were considered risk factors. The numerical dominance of parasites was significantly associated with host length and the taxa Nematoda, Trematoda, Monogenea, Hirudinea, and Crustacea. In addition, our results indicate that the mixed-effects model was more parsimonious compared with the classical model, underscoring the importance of choosing a statistical model that takes into consideration the nature of the data to avoid spurious results, especially when autocorrelations data were not considered. In general, our results point to the need for developing studies with more comprehensive databases and larger samples of parasite species, in which data on the life cycles of fish species and parasite taxa can be analyzed more thoroughly.

Reikalavimo perleidimas ir subrogacija: sampratos ir santykio problemos / Assignment of claim and subrogation: the problems of conception and relation

Neringa, Sarulytė 25 January 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Master‘s final thesis is devoted to the analysis of two different ways of change of persons in an obligation – assignment of claim (cession) and subrogation. The author puts through the review of the historical development of the institutes of cession and subrogation since the times of Roman law, analyses the conceptions of assignment of claim and subrogation and legal nature of these institutes in the legal system of Lithuania and other foreign countries. The author thoroughly researches the institutes of assignment of claim (cession) and subrogation, points out the main problems arising in the field of conception of these institutes and approaches to the pecularities of the legal position of persons in an obligation. This Thesis at large scale approaches to detection of the relation between assignment of claim (cession) and subrogation. The legal regulation of subrogation, provided in the Civil code of the Republic of Lithuania, supposes the conclusion that subrogation is a particular kind of assignment of claim. The Author formulates criteria which help to separate the institutes of assignment of claim and subrogation and allows to treat them as two separate ways of change of persons in an obligation. The legal regulation, provided in the Civil Code of the Republic of Lithuania, treats subrogation as a particular kind of the right of regress but subrogation at the same time is a seperate way of change of persons in an obligation and due to this situation the author... The main study objective was to build a regression model to predict the risk of failures that impede production wells to function properly using the information of explanatory variables related to wells such as the elevation method, the amount of water produced in the well (BSW), the ratio gas-oil (RGO), the depth of the production bomb, the operational unit of the oil field, among others. The study was based on a retrospective sample of 603 oil columns from all that were functioning between 2000 and 2006. Statistical hypothesis tests under a Weibull regression model fitted to the failure data allowed the selection of some significant predictors in the set considered to explain the first failure time in the wells / Esta disserta??o apresenta uma aplica??o do estudo da confiabilidade em dados de tempo de vida de po?os petrol?feros terrestres produtores de ?leo da Bacia Potiguar (RN/CE).

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Ci?ncia Florestal, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017. / This study had as object to evaluate the influence of the reduction of plots at some measurements of continuous forest inventory in the growth and yield modeling of a Eucalyptus sp. forest stand. The Clutter model was used in forest growth and yield modeling, using selected data of 374 distributed plots in 172 forest compartments. It were used three modeling alternatives: without stratification of the forest stand, with stratification of the forest stand and a set of 30 simulations. These simulations were samples of 40 plots each one, without stratification, objectifying a general analysis about the studied phenomenon. To all the alternatives, it was made the forest growth and yield modeling without considering reductions in continuous forest inventory measurements and considering three reduction situations. The considered situations were measurements of 25%, 50% and 75% of the continuous forest inventory plots in the measures two and four, and 100% in the measures one, three and five. This same methodology was repeated, but using the Logistic nonlinear regression model, plus a correction factor. Both models had good precision to predicting and projecting the forest stand volume at future ages. The Logistic model with a correcting factor, however, had best precision than the Clutter model. For both models it was found that there was not significant losses of accuracy caused by reductions in the number of plots at some continuous forest inventory measurements. To forest growth and yield modeling, it is recommended for these reductions to be judicious and preferably the last measurement to not be reduced.
