Becoming 'Jewish' believing in Jesus? : conversion, gender and ethnicity in the production of the Judaising Evangelical subject

Carpenedo, Manoela January 2019 (has links)
Based on an ethnography conducted between 2013-2015 within a religious community in Brazil, this thesis investigates the meanings of a growing worldwide religious movement fusing beliefs and identity claims deriving from Judaism and Charismatic Evangelicalism. Unlike Messianic Judaism, where Jewish-born people identified as believers in Jesus remain faithful to their Jewish traditions while observing Charismatic Evangelical practices or Christian Zionism, Evangelicals who emphasise the theological and eschatological importance of Jews living in Israel, this thesis addresses a different dimension of this trend. Focusing particularly on women's conversion narratives, this study investigates the reasons why Charismatic Evangelical Brazilians are actively embracing a version of Judaism that requires them to follow the strict dress codes and purity laws of Orthodox Jews while believing in Jesus as the Messiah. My analysis concluded that the emergence of these communities should be understood as a revival aiming to restore some Charismatic Evangelical practices. Pointing to the moral permissiveness, materialism, individualism, and petitionary rhetoric enforced in their former Charismatic Evangelical churches-influenced by Neo-Pentecostal tenets-they embrace an austere religious style characterised by self- cultivation centred in Jewish ritual and ethos. This pious revival also involves recovering a collective past. References to a hidden Jewish heritage and a 'return' to Judaism are mobilised for justifying the community's strict adherence to Jewish practices. Drawing upon a socio-cultural and gender-sensitive analysis, this study examines the historical, religious and subjective reasons behind this emerging 'Judaising' trend in Charismatic Evangelicalism. This thesis also engages with the literature of religious conversion, morality, cultural change and debates examining hybridisation processes.

Judaísmo messiânico no Brasil: a Beit sar shalom: um estudo de caso / Mesyanic judaism in Brazil: Beit Sar Shalom - a case study

Travassos, Deborah Hornblas 02 October 2008 (has links)
The central objective of this dissertation was to show how messianic jews from Beit Sar Shalom synagogue see themselves and how they are seen by the groups outside their ethnicity frontiers, in the present case, how they are seen by Jew leadership secular and religious from São Paulo city. Messianic Judaism is a religion that mixes elements of Christianity, because they believe that the messiah sent by God is Jesus and Judaism because maintaining part of the rituals, festivities and traditions. The results of this analyze should be seen as indicators that the religion was concluded as a kind of paradigmatic syncretic one, in which elements of Christianity and Judaism are carefully selected and applied to the doctrinaire body. The study was developed having as starting point the ethnography of the Beit Sar Shalom, messianic synagogue, located in São Paulo in the borough Higienópolis. / The contact between European Christianism and African religiosities took place prior to the African Diaspora, developing into an African Christianism. In Colonial Brazil, it was inserted into the popular Catholicism spread by the black religious Brotherhoods, most of all in Minas Gerais, where to this day the Congados and Reinados are still carried out. To understand the interfaces of the religious experiences as from a specific case study, the Congado de Bela Vista de Minas, constitutes this research’s purpose. While having a Christian Catholic guidance, the religious experiences of the congadeiros from Bela Vista, expressed in their rituals and narratives, have connections with elements that go beyond the contours of Roman Apostolic Catholicism. Additionally to the pursuit of the holy, through their festivities in devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, the partakers experience the dislocation of individual and collective identities. Thus, through fieldworks, execution of semi-structured interviews, consults to primary sources, ethnographic description and bibliographic review, this thesis addresses, mainly, the thematic involving religious syncretism and religious identities.

Thornfält, Alexander January 2022 (has links)
This is a study of religion and popular culture with a focus on the film industry. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to create an increased understandning of how religion can be expressed in film and contribute to an understanding of the way religious themes can be expressed in popular culture. Furthermore, the purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine which messianic features are found in Dune's main character Paul Atreides. Additionally, how Bene Gesserit as well as fremen both contribute to the messianic concept in the film Dune (2021). Two theoretical concepts have been used in this study: Axelson's theory of the messiah-figure and religious syncretism. The method is a qualitative content analysis and to achieve the purpose of the inquiry this method will be used by examining the film Dune (2021). The messianic features of Paul Atreides will be examined with the use of Axelson's theory of the messiah-figure. The analysis shows several messianic features that emerge, Dune's main character Paul Atreides had doubts, unsure of this identity and visions as messianic features. Furthermore, Bene Gesserit has contributed to the messianic concept as the intermediator by creating the messiah. Additionally, the fremen have the function of a chosen as well as an opressed people and has contributed to the messianic concept in this way. The chosen and opressed people as an idea have been borrowed from judaism. Additionally, the idea of mahdi have been borrowed from shia islam which is a concept about a messiah who will return to earth and create justice. These two concepts from judaism and shia islam shows different features from religion that has been expressed in the film Dune (2021).

In the land of syncretism: appropriations and african- Brazilian reinterpretation in the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God.

Over recent years it has been observed significant changes in the Pentecostal ritualistic context, and specifically, Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus, which began to use elements originating from African- Brazilian religions in its rites. By means of bibliographical, documentary and case study research, printed statements (flyers), regional and national coverage preaching and also excerpts from the book Orixás, Caboclos & Guias, Deuses ou Demônios? were analyzed with a focus on highlighting the use of elements from African religions, its appropriation and redefinition. This research has shown that antagonistically, at the same time that such items are used, they are also fought vehemently by supporters of African-Brazilian and mediunical religions. The process takes place in a hostile manner and among the doctrinal currents precipitating such a procedure it can be stress the spiritual war against the devil, which has emerged as a source of religious intolerance against African-Brazilian religions. It so happens that the IURD, beyond taking ownership of such elements, assign to them new meanings. Breaks out, thus, a new syncretic process that is stimulated by the religious nature of the discourses. Through the theoretical conceptions that come from Foucault efforts, an analysis of the discourses was arranged and have been noted that they stimulate spiritual barriers especially against Umbanda and Candomblé adherents. Meanwhile, to strengthen its discourses, IURD started to use up terms, elements, rites and expressions stemming religions of African heritage with the purpose of creating a point of contact with Brazilian popular belief. Allocating new meanings to religious elements, IURD has contributed to the repositioning of the black identity among its believers; but, at once, it seems that it also seeks to distort this same black identity in the religions of African-matrix, attributing to them negative facets, relating them to the devil, setting thus certain climate of religious intolerance between IURD and religions of African- matrices. It may be seen that the use of elements of the religion regarded as opposite and the redefinition of its major elements of identity is setting up a new syncretic process in the field of Brazilian religions.

At first, we discuss the means that enable this insertion, as well as the people involved in the process of diffusion of a exotic" religion in the historical and cultural context of Paraiba. Secondly, the focus of this research is the process of translation (or "reframing") of the Buddhist ideals made by the belief system of its original paraibanos practitioners. Our hypothesis is that some of the Buddhist philosophical assumptions can be "read" in the light of Franciscan Christianity. If the discourses are essentially heterogeneous and polyphonic, then Buddhist doctrine when expanded in to the world, inevitably suffered interventions, additions and revisions. Therefore, our objective is to understand, beyond the manners, the process through which, from certain historical conditions, various discursive formations operate in the production of a "new" religious discourse in our region.
