Palm, Anna January 2022 (has links)
The development over the past 150 years from confessional to confession-free schools has resulted in large changes concerning the role of religion in Swedish schools. Most religious elements in schools are forbidden today, but current curriculum decree that hymns still should be part of the central content of the subject of music. The singing of hymns springs from a strong tradition within the Swedish school system and is still considered by many to be necessary content. The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how music teachers handle confessional material in their teaching, and how they reason about confession-free education. The study is built upon previous research about religion didactics, freedom of religion, and the importance of cultural rites. The study consists of qualitative interviews with four active music teachers in Sweden. The hermeneutic analysis of the research material shows that the interpretations of the concept confession-free are varied, and that teachers feel an insecurity about how to ensure a confession-free education with religious material, even if several intuitive solutions to the dilemma were shown. The discussion lifts whether the concept confession-free ensures the religious freedom of the pupils, and some practical suggestions for music education.

Singing Schools in Southcentral Kentucky

Beisswenger, Donald 01 December 1985 (has links)
Singing school teachers, who teach rural church congregations to sing from shape-note gospel songbooks, are still working in southcentral Kentucky, but the demand for them is smaller than it was in the first half of the twentieth century. The interdependence network in which singing school teachers, songbook publishers, and community singing events were key parts began to weaken in the 1940s as a result of the growth in popularity of professional gospel quartet concerts and gospel record albums. Many gospel music enthusiasts who once looked to songbooks as a major source for new material and for developing singing skills turned to albums and concerts in the 1940s. Singing school teachers began to be called on less frequently. The first three chapters of this thesis contain an overview of the gospel singing events, the songbook publishers, and the singing schools. The nature of the relationship between these three gospel music institutions is established. In the fourth chapter, I profile three singing school teachers of southcentral Kentucky. In the conclusion, the development of popular religious music since the early 1800s is summarized and the importance of researching Southern white gospel music as a step toward a greater understanding of Southern music traditions as a whole is examined.

Music and liturgy in early Christianity

Yatskaya, Svetlana 12 1900 (has links)
The goal for this dissertation was to research the music in liturgy and daily life of early Christians (of the first two centuries AD) and to reveal the main factors affecting the fornation of music and liturgy in the early church. Therefore the music backgrounds of the early Christians (the Jewish and Hellenistic music cultures) together with the evidences from early Christian literature (New Testament and some of the Church Fathers) have been examined. On the strength of the investigations done, the author concludes that Christianity inherited musical traditions first of all from Judaism, and later on, as it was extended to the entire Roman Empire, it was influenced by Hellenism as well. Consequently, there was not a united form of worship in early Christian church, and from the very beginning the music of different communities could vary depending on their cultural backgrounds. Thus, music life of Jewish Christianity differed from the churches consisting mainly of Christians from the Gentiles. / Cristian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. This study also examines the integration and the similarity of the Gospel song with the music called pop, that is developed out of religious grounds, pointing out similarities in the instrumentation, arrangements, musical, performances, radio broadcasting, television and public reception. The systematization of the research occurs in three chapters, each one makes a specific approach, based on the methods of critical by Imbert: historic and sociologist as well as the considerations of Guy Debord, in relation to the show. The first chapter is focused on the historical field, addressing the development of religious music in the Old and New Testament Bible, the establishment of the Church in the Middle Ages and the religious reforms according to Grout Palisca, Collins Price and Stamps. The second chapter explores the Gospel, from its origins to the present time based on the reflections of Friendland, Baggio, Muggiati and Calado. The first part of the third chapter discusses the musicality of religion in Brazil and in Goiás , more specifically the history of Pentecostalism and the musical development of this segment supported by the authors of the social sphere: Mariano, Freston and Weber.
