Getting Back on Track After Challenges: A Qualitative Analysis of Repair Efforts in Intimate Relationships

All couples confront conflict in their marriage. Finding ways to navigate couple conflict is a topic that has been explored for several decades among marriage researchers (Rollin & Dowd, 1979). Repair, a strategy to help reconcile a situation or conversation that has gone awry, is important in helping couples overcome conflict. When couples are not able to repair and move forward, resentment arises. Unfortunately, the research on repair and resentment is limited, and the complexity of these variables can make it difficult to conceptualize. The present study utilized a qualitative lens (grounded constructivist theory) to explore relational repair and resentment in greater depth, hoping to capture the intricacies of how conflict arises and how couples either successfully or unsuccessfully get back on track and repair damage that has occurred. An analysis of 45 participant interviews revealed three main themes: 1) foundational elements 2) mid and post-rupture actions and, 3) moving forward. Clinical implications of the themes and corresponding sub-themes are discussed.

This thesis is the result of the great interest awaken in me for resentment, always so present in the clinical practice, and of the need to extend my understanding of the theme. Bearing in mind the small prominence the theme has seen in the psychoanalytical field, I have made my way towards literature and philosophy and made use of them to build a wider frame. This paper aims at showing some ways our patients find to deal with the affective constellation called resentment, and point out that the possibility of a healthy outcome such as literary creation is not always open, but that through psychoanalytical work it is possible to remove the subject from the position of a victim and make him assume his position as a subject. I have worked with the hypothesis that resentment is the result of a narcissistic failure that happens at the encounter of a certain baby with a little favorable environment. From this encounter would result a frail self, ill prepared to face situations that are considered humiliating or highly offensive by this subject. This research results in the conception of resentment as a primary defense used every time the subject feels attacked in his narcissism, so frailly composed. Yet through repetition, resentment is used as a defense, even though it is a little appropriate defense and results in false gains / Esta dissertação é resultado do grande interesse em mim despertado pelo ressentimento, sempre tão presente na clínica, e da minha necessidade de ampliar minha compreensão sobre o tema. Tendo em vista o pequeno destaque dado ao tema no campo da psicanálise, recorri ao longo da minha pesquisa à literatura e à filosofia e delas fiz uso na construção de um quadro mais amplo. Este trabalho teve como objetivo mostrar algumas das maneiras como nossos pacientes lidam com a constelação afetiva chamada ressentimento e fazer ver que nem sempre está aberta a possibilidade de uma saída saudável como, por exemplo, a da criação literária , embora, através do trabalho analítico, seja possível deslocar o sujeito do lugar de vítima e fazê-lo assumir seu lugar de sujeito. Trabalhei com a hipótese de que o ressentimento fosse o resultado de uma falha narcísica, que acontece no encontro de um determinado bebê com um ambiente pouco favorável. Desse encontro resultaria um ego frágil e pouco preparado para enfrentar situações que seriam encaradas, por este sujeito, como humilhantes ou altamente ofensivas. A pesquisa resulta na idéia do ressentimento como defesa primitiva, utilizada sempre que o sujeito se sinta atacado em seu narcisismo, tão fragilmente constituído. O que (não) se esquece? Uma leitura psicanalítica do ressentimento / What is (not) forgotten? A psychoanalytic interpretation of resentment

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo construir hipóteses teóricas e clínicas acerca do ressentimento, a partir de uma leitura psicanalítica. Observamos que, apesar da frequência com que o tema do ressentimento aparece em discussões clínicas na atualidade, o termo ainda parece marginalizado no arcabouço teórico de pesquisa em psicanálise, possivelmente porque não tem estatuto de noção nem de conceito dentro desse campo. Diante disso, perguntamos: de que maneira o ressentimento se apresenta na clínica psicanalítica? Quais operadores nos embasam quando nos deparamos com o ressentimento via narrativa ou no discurso de um sujeito na clínica? De que forma o estudo sobre o sujeito do inconsciente se articula ao ressentimento? Uma vez que nosso objeto de investigação não é parte da teoria psicanalítica, expomos de que maneira alguns dos principais pensadores e filósofos o abordam pela via do homem, da sociedade, da moral, da justiça e da vingança. Em seguida, situamos os conceitos que pesquisadores de nossa área elegem para situar o ressentimento enquanto fenômeno que interessa à psicanálise. A partir dessa revisão teórica, construímos nossa própria leitura psicanalítica. Um caso clínico disparador é apresentado de forma a fazer pulsar novos questionamentos, que remetem à teoria da constituição subjetiva, para, posteriormente, situar de que forma o ressentimento afeta o sujeito e qual sua relação com as operações lógicas do psiquismo. Apresentamos um trabalho interpretativo da obra Dom Casmurro, que permite eleger o protagonista como caso paradigmático do ressentido. Concluímos nossa hipótese com uma explanação, entre outras possíveis, do que pode um psicanalista diante do ressentimento. Levantou-se como resultado dessa pesquisa duas principais hipóteses: o ressentimento enquanto estratégia frente ao desejo do Outro e o ressentir como modalidade de gozo. Esperase que a proposta de leitura acerca do ressentimento, do ressentir e do ressentido possa contribuir para o reconhecimento dessa perspectiva e, assim, inspirar intervenções e descobertas sempre únicas no campo da clínica psicanalítica, em casos em que o ressentimento é marcante / The aim of this work is to propose theoretical and clinical hypotheses on resentment, based on a psychoanalytic reading. We note that despite the frequency with which the subject of resentment appears in clinical discussions today, the term seems to be relegated to the sidelines of the theoretical framework of research in psychoanalysis, possibly because it has no notion or concept status within this field. In view of this, we ask: in what way does resentment present itself in psychoanalytic clinics? Which operators support us when we come across resentment via narrative or in the discourse of a subject in the clinic? How does the study of the subject of the unconscious articulate to resentment? Since our object of inquiry is not part of psychoanalytic theory, we show how some of the leading philosophers and thinkers approach it via man, society, morality, justice, and revenge. Next, we locate the concepts chosen by researchers in our field with which to identify resentment as a phenomenon of interest to psychoanalysis. Based on this theoretical review, we have built our own psychoanalytic reading. A triggering clinical case is presented in order to bring about new questions which refer to the theory of the subjective constitution, and then to identify how resentment affects the subject and how it relates to the logical operations of the psyche. We present an interpretation of the novel Dom Casmurro, allowing us to designate the leading character as an emblematic case of someone who feels resentment. We conclude with an explanation one of several possible ones of what a psychoanalyst can do when faced with resentment. Two main hypotheses arose from this research: resentment as a strategy against the desire of the Other and resentment as a mode of jouissance. We hope the proposed reading of resentment, resenting and the one who resents may contribute to the recognition of this view and thus inspire unique interventions and discoveries in the field of psychoanalytic clinic, in cases where resentment is strongly present

<p> 1958 was the year women became recognized as priests in The Church of Sweden- this event formed the initial idea for the study. This is a qualitative comparative inquiry, which seeks to understand gender structures within The Church of Sweden. It has its focus on men and women’s working conditions, which includes their experience of reality and their experienced differences and similarities in their role as priests. Six priests from one concealed diocese have been interviewed and the methodological approach is induction, which has been applied to best ability. Cross-case analysis has been implemented to enable comparison of gender conditions. Through the stage of analysis the data have been interpreted with an open mindset and was not structured in groups by male vs. female. This allowed patterns to emerge with all possibilities, not only with gender taken into consideration. Organizational and gender theories along with previous research have been the main resource for this project. The historian Yvonne Hirdman and the scientist Rosabeth Moss Kanter are two theorists in whom the results are mainly based upon, together with statements and quotations from my informants. The findings in this thesis are due to structural and gender mechanisms. A suggestion to discard the theological conviction and defining resentment against female priests as an issue solely determined by working environmental problem is to be considered. The main differences found in gender due to a structural consequence are the experience of career opportunities and discrimination. It is clear that the structure of The Church of Sweden limits ones career opportunities within a position but also sets limitations due to the lack of higher alternative positions. The women in my study have been victims of the structural powers of men and/or organizations, which could be understood through Kanter´s three-factor theory. The female priests are all struggling with their working description, the assumption of gender difference in this issue is to be drawn. This is also true when it comes to the informant’s role as priests. There are expected differences in leadership between men and women and women are being compared to their male colleges which is an indication of Hirdman´s theory <em>A vs. a. </em>Female vicars working conditions as well as the hierarchy system of The Church of Sweden are suggestions of further studies in the field.</p>

[pt] A ditadura civil-militar e a luta armada funcionaram como tema e cenário para uma significativa produção cinematográfica no período pós-abertura política, marcando de forma expressiva a cultura nos anos oitenta e noventa. Através de filmes realizados durante estes anos, a memória da luta armada foi sendo construída e disputada. A criação e atuação das organizações armadas de esquerda marcará indelevelmente aquele ano, assim como os anos subseqüentes de uma ditadura que tinha no apoio e cumplicidade de amplos setores sociais, um de seus pilares de sustentação. O fim da ditadura, anunciado em 1979 com a Anistia, e a retomada do regime democrático, marcado pela eleição de Tancredo Neves no Colégio Eleitoral em 1985, trouxeram uma profunda transformação de valores na chamada geração de 68. A ditadura civil- militar, a luta armada, a repressão, o exílio, a Anistia, a volta para o Brasil e a abertura lenta, segura e gradual estão na esteira de um universo de eventos que fornecerão elementos políticos, ideológicos, mas, sobretudo afetivos para aqueles que se debruçam sobre a construção desta memória. Neste sentido, o tema da presente dissertação abarca a análise de dois importantes filmes: Que bom te ver viva (Lúcia Murat, 1989) e O que é isso, companheiro? (Bruno Barreto, 1997). Through videos produced throughout these years, the memory of the armed revolt was being built, defended and disputed. The creation and the performance of the leftist armed organization marked that year like any other ever did as well as the following years of the dictatorship that had in the support and alliance of vast social sectors one of its major sponsors. The end of the dictatorship announced in 1979, along with the Amnesty and the reestablishment of the democracy marked by the election of Tancredo Neves in the Electoral College in 1985 provoked a profound transformation of values in the nominated 68-generation. The civilian-military dictatorship, the armed revolt, the repression, the exile, the Amnesty, the return to Brazil and the slow, secure and gradual opening are fundamental items of this universe of transformations that will supply political and ideological elements, but most significantly sentimental elements for the ones that enjoy the history of the construction of those memories. Based on that, the theme of this paper comprises the analysis of two important movies: Que bom te ver viva (Lúcia Murat, 1989) and O que é isso companheiro? (Bruno Barreto, 1987). Each movie analyzed independently contribute to explain, in your own particular way, how the memory of the armed revolt was built in those two decades and how this memory relates to feelings such as resentment, its revealing feature of possible, impossible, thinkable and unthinkable paths of remembering and forgetting. Based on your own reflectors and prisms, each movie adopts a way of treating the resentment of the memory and the memory of the resentment.

Firstly, we sought to understand the genealogic point of view adopted by the philosopher in his "Genealogy of morals", in which the author makes an assessment as to how " good and bad " values, created by a morality of lords, were transmuted into "good and bad", by the morality of slaves. According to Nietzsche, all values - imposed by tradition - are nothing more than a result of a revaluation of noble values - which come from a free and strong people - to a culture of weak and decadent men, which is woven by a sick and slave morality. A metaphysical moral that eventually would give to the weak a meaning for life and for his suffering. Thus, guided by his estimate, we try to show that, in Nietzsche, the resentment takes a key place in the history of the emergence of a particular form of valuation, namely, slave. Were also considered, the genesis of the moral values and how happened their revaluation through traditional thinking. Was indicated, therefore, the main elements of Nietzsche's critique to metaphysics and religion, as sources that form values. It was also found, how the problems raised by Nietzsche's reflection revealed up to date, especially those concerning the relations resentment. / Nesta dissertação, é realizada uma análise do problema do ressentimento no pensamento de Nietzsche a partir de sua crítica à filosofia de inspiração socrático-platônica e à tradição judaico-cristã. Primeiramente, buscou-se a compreensão do ponto de vista genealógico adotado pelo filósofo em sua Genealogia da moral , no qual o autor faz uma avaliação acerca de como os valores bom e ruim , criados por uma moral dos senhores, foram transmutados em bom e mau , simultaneamente, pela moral dos escravos. De acordo com Nietzsche, todos os valores instituídos pela tradição , nada mais são do que consequência de uma transvaloração de valores nobres os quais são provenientes de um povo livre e forte , para uma cultura de homens fracos e decadentes, a qual é tecida por uma moral escrava e doente. Uma moral metafísica que, por fim daria, ao fraco, um sentido para a vida e para o seu sofrer. Dessa forma, pautados em sua estimativa, tentamos mostrar que, em Nietzsche, o ressentimento toma um lugar essencial na história da emergência de uma determinada forma de valoração, a saber, escrava. Foram abordados, também, a gênese dos valores morais e o modo como se deu a sua transvaloração pelo pensamento tradicional. Indicou-se, pois, os principais elementos da crítica de Nietzsche à metafísica e à religião, enquanto fontes constituidoras de valores. Verificaram-se, ainda, como os problemas suscitados pela reflexão nietzschiana revelam-se atuais, notadamente os relacionados ao ressentimento.
