In the late 1980s, Latin America, at that the time one of the least developed regions of the world, experienced a period of significant political and economic changes that led to a prominent place in today’s economic world. As a consequence, Latin America has become a top research theme among scholars all over the world. In an attempt to contribute to this body of research, we conducted a qualitative research in order to test the applicability of existing theories in the fields of international business and strategy. Following Meyer and Peng (2005), we outlined the three most advanced theories in these two fields of study: (1) organizational economic theories; (2) resource-based theories; and (3) institutional theories. For each of these theories, we then discuss their contribution to the understanding of the key issues in Latin America such as building competitive advantages, economic liberalization vs. government regulation, and internationalization. Our findings contribute to the literature by discussing and understanding how Latin America research has influenced or impacted the development theory in the fields of IB and Strategy. We conclude by offering some suggestions and opportunities for future research.

The relative importance of different sources of firms’ performance heterogeneity has been widely discussed as well as tested empirically. Industry, corporation, firm and year effects have been the main focus of these studies. This work analzyed another source of performance heterogeneity: country effect. Empirical analysis was based on a Compustal Global sample which included over 80,000 observations and 11,000 firms in 37 countries, 256 industries and a 10 year time span. A cross classified 4- level hierarchical linear model allowed the estimation of country and country-industry interaction effects. These were significant and as relevant as industry effect. Altogether, the effects related to the external environment (country, industry and country-industry) were almost as important as firm effect. Variance composition was consistent across SIC Divisions and remained stable along time. A model adequate to explain performance variance between countries was proposed and estimated – as a methodological illustration – to analyze the relationship between competitiveness of nations and firm performance.

Several studies analyzed the quality management contribution to the firms’ financial performance, conducted by either academics or consultant firms interested in demonstrate the relationship between quality and superior performance. Although its promoters publicize the advantages of quality management, the body of empirical researches relating quality management and performance produced mixed results. In the most part, these studies used data from American or European companies; in Brazil, this field of research is still incipient. Beyond comparing the financial performance of a sample of firms which effectively adopt the quality management against a set of others firms of the same economic sectors, this study evaluated the performance evolution of the sample companies, in a long-term framework (10 years), comparing their results in the quality post-implementation period with the results already obtained in the early period. As the proxy to the effective adoption of quality management the research considered a sample of 33 companies distinguished as award recipients or finalists of the Brazilian National Quality Award (Prêmio Nacional da Qualidade – PNQ). The financial performance was measured by growth, profitability and market value. These financial data were collected in a set of data banks including Balanço Anual from Gazeta Mercantil, Economática, and the Annual Industrial Surveys from Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). To isolate the effect of the economic sectors, the indicators were standardized according to a relationship among the performance of the sample firms, the sector performance and the variance of the sector performance. In total, 12,010 observations from 2,624 companies (33 from the study sample and 2,591 from the economic sectors) were collected, from 1987 to 2006. In the first stage of the methodology, the performance of each firm in the sample was summarized by means of linear regressions, resulting, to each case, in two coefficients that characterized the performance. A linear coefficient represents the performance in the period midpoint, whereas the angular coefficient represents the increasing rate of the performance in the same period. Afterwards, parametric (t tests) and non-parametric (Wilcoxon tests for related samples and sign tests) analyses were conducted for the whole sample data. The results showed the profitability as the only dimension of financial performance where the firms in the study sample obtained a superior performance when compared with their economic sectors; otherwise evidence was not found that performance in the post-implementation period is superior to the implementation period. A conjoint analysis of these two findings provide evidences of a covariation, and not causation, link between quality and financial performance. The conclusions presented the main implications of the research, emphasizing the formulation of possible hypothesis in order to understand the causes of the findings. Among the most important stands out the hypothesis that relating quality and the lack of innovation capability, and that evaluate quality management using the theory of the resource-based view (RBV).

Marketing strategies of textile companies : the case of selected medium and large Ethiopian textile companies

Aschelew Degoma Durie 03 1900 (has links)
The objective of the study was to examine the marketing strategies of Ethiopian medium and large textile companies. The textile sector became the focus of this study because it has performed far below expectation, despite the government‘s unreserved support to the sector and the country‘s comparative advantage in the sector. To attain the stated objective, qualitative research approach with case study design was employed. The cases were selected based on two criteria; production of finished textile products and operation in both local and global markets. Accordingly, nine companies qualified these criteria and all of them were used as cases. The RBV was the theory employed to explain the differences in performances among firms‘ in similar environment. Furthermore, within and cross case analyses were employed to get in-depth understanding and to explain about the marketing strategies of the firms. The major findings of the study indicate that the emphasis given to marketing strategy and the marketing resources and capabilities commitment thereof were found to be so low that the companies seemed to equate marketing strategy with selling strategy. Furthermore, the companies failed to link their marketing enabling environment with their marketing strategy. Similarly, such weak link was reflected between the firms‘ marketing strategy and their market performances. Hence, the marketing strategies of the case companies are so weak that with their current marketing strategy, it is difficult for them to be competent in the local market, let alone in the international markets. Generally, both empirical and conceptual conclusions were drawn from the findings. As a result, the cross-case findings indicate that marketing resources commitment is linearly linked to marketing strategy which in turn is linked to export performances. Therefore, it can be understood that the link between enabling environment and marketing strategy is direct and the link between marketing strategy and marketing performances is linear. Hence, it can be understood from this transitivity that there exists a link between firms‘ enabling environment and their marketing performances. / Business Management / D.B.L.

Effect of resources and entrepreneurial orientation on growth of small enterprises in Tigray Regional State, Ethiopia

Aregawi Ghebremichael Tirfe 08 1900 (has links)
The primary objective of this study was to examine how and to what extent entrepreneurial orientation, firm internal resources and capital structure decisions affect growth of small enterprises, following the resource- based view on determinants of growth and static trade-off theory of capital structure as theoretical frameworks. Regardless of the number of earlier study, there is no consensus among scholars on determinants of growth due to the existence of different theories and metrics of growth. Moreover, as the earlier studies were undertaken in developed countries, their research findings could not permit generalization on the effect of the explanatory variables on growth in less developed countries like Ethiopia. Therefore, this research tried to fill the gap in the existing body of knowledge on determinants of growth by contextualizing the association of growth with firm specific factors and EO from the Ethiopian context, more specifically from the context of Tigray Regional State. Besides, extra variables that were either not considered or might have been tested separately in earlier studies in Ethiopia were integrated into the regression model. In this mixed explanatory cross-sectional research, systematic random sampling techniques and structure questionnaire were applied to collect primary data from 333 small enterprises operating in five urban towns of Tigray region. Dependent variable of the study was growth of small enterprises, defined as logarithm of change in number of employees at the time of establishment and time of survey. The explanatory variables comprise of entrepreneurial orientation with three dimensions, tangible and intangible resources under the control of a given enterprises, capital structure decisions, external factors such as marketing related problems cost and accessibility of infrastructure, government policies and bureaucracy, business development services were also included in the regression model. Descriptive statistics, statistical difference tests, multiple regression analysis and Propensity Score Matching were applied for the purpose of data analysis with the help of Stata version 12 software. Majority of the small enterprises demonstrated moderate degree of entrepreneurial orientation and location nearer to major customers, entrepreneurial orientation, strong financial position, access to credit and leverage have statistically significant positive effect on growth of small enterprises which support the resource based view and static trade-off theory of capital structure as well as the perceived hypothesis. On the other hand, consistent to the hypothesis, age and size of small enterprises showed negative significant effect on growth, that supports Jovanovich’s learning model but against the Girbat’s law of proportionate effect. Moreover, the relationship between education and growth was found to be non-linear or volatile-growth of SEs tend to declined until certain level, reached a minimum level after which SEs with more educated owners tend to grow faster. This implies that unless owners’ years of education reach a very high level of schooling, a given increase in years of schooling could not necessarily result into higher growth rate. Based on the findings, the researcher suggests (i) in order to solve financial constraints of SEs, stakeholder need introduction of National Credit Guarantee Fund, Promotion of non-bank financial services, introduce Mandatory Minimum Bank Loan to small enterprises, establish specialized banking system that specifically support the small enterprise sector, (ii) provide working premises such as shades at concessional cost, (iii) facilitate establishment of small enterprise commercial centers, (iv) strengthen the clustering practices,(v) facilitate provision of adequate infrastructure at reasonable price, (vi) as TVET completed individuals outperform in growth rate, educational institutions in Ethiopia need to incorporate competence based training system and entrepreneurship into their syllabus by strengthening the industry university linkages / Business Management / DBL

The seven cities that represent the region, Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo, São Caetano do Sul, Diadema, Mauá, Ribeirão Pires and Rio Grande da Serra, have in recent years economic growth considerably above the country's growth and development has stimulated the growth of the country. The empirical analysis uses panel data and examines the performance of firms in the seven cities that make up the Grande ABC during the years 2001 to 2008 using the multilevel methodology and three performance measures: ROA, ROE and OROA. The multilevel approach allowed the identification of key factors that are associated or not to performance of these companies and these effects are the year, the company itself, the sub sector, the sector and the city that the company is located. Among the tree performance measures used there was significant convergence, in addition the study identified that there is a significant effect on corporate performance associated with the year and the company itself, and show that the sectors, subsectors and the city that the company is do not have a significant effect associated with these firm performance.

In the scope of corporate policy activities (CPA) aided by resource variables, routine and resource-based capabilities (RBV), this research aimed to analyze how corporate lobbying activities are carried out in politically changing environments. Lobby is one of CPA's most commonly used tactics. Studies that aim at understanding through economic and other factors are indeed important in explaining variation within a given system, but rarely take into account a country's domestic political environment (YADAV, 2008). The context of unpredictability creates uncertainties about the environment in which lobby tactic is implemented and reduces the predictability of scenarios. The consequence of this is the possibility of diminishing the competitive advantage of companies that engage in non-market strategies. In addition, politically changing environments are characterized by exchanges of power executives from national elections (YASUDA; MITSUHASHI, 2017) or by impediment in completing the government mandate. The political and economic scenario of 2016 in Brazil served as a laboratory for the study, as it presents characteristics of the environment of political changes demanded for the research. Through a qualitative positivist research with triangulation of primary data - obtained through interviews - and secondary data - mainly for understanding the political environment, the research is justified by the importance of deeper understanding of the phenomenon.
