Thermal Crack Risk Estimation and Material Properties of Young Concrete

Hösthagen, Anders January 2017 (has links)
This thesis presents how to establish a theoretical model to predict risk of thermal cracking in young concrete when cast on ground or an arbitrary construction. The crack risk in young concrete is determined in two steps: 1) calculation of temperature distribution within newly cast concrete and adjacent structure; 2) calculation of stresses caused by thermal and moisture (due to self-desiccation, if drying shrinkage not included) changes in the analyzed structure. If the stress reaches the tensile strength of the young concrete, one or several cracks will occur. The main focus of this work is how to establish a theoretical model denoted Equivalent Restraint Method model, ERM, and the correlation between ERM models and empirical experiences. A key factor in these kind of calculations is how to model the restraint from any adjacent construction part or adjoining restraining block of any type. The building of a road tunnel and a railway tunnel has been studied to collect temperature measurements and crack patterns from the first object, and temperature and thermal dilation measurements from the second object, respectively. These measurements and observed cracks were compared to the theoretical calculations to determine the level of agreement between empirical and theoretical results. Furthermore, this work describes how to obtain a set of fully tested material parameters at CompLAB (test laboratory at Luleå University of Technology, LTU) suitable to be incorporated into the calculation software used. It is of great importance that the obtained material parameters describe the thermal and mechanical properties of the young concrete accurately, in order to perform reliable crack risk calculations.  Therefore, analysis was performed that show how a variation in the evaluated laboratory tests will affect the obtained parameters and what effects it has on calculated thermal stresses.

Selye defined stress as the nonspecific response of the body to any factors that endanger homeostasis (balance of internal environment) of the individual. These factors, agents stressors, are able to activate the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, thus resulting in the physiological responses to stress by the release of glucocorticoids that leads to psychophysiological changes, including effects on cognitive functions such as learning and memory. When this axis is acutely stimulated occurs a repertoire of behavioral and physiological changes can be adaptive to the individual. Notwithstanding, when the HPA axis is chronically stimulated, changes may favor the development of, such as anxiety disorders. Some drugs used in the clinic for the treatment of anxiety disorders these can exert effects on cognitive function, on the HPA axis and on the anxiety. In this context, the aim of our study was to investigate the effects of administration i.p. acute of diazepam (DZP, 2 mg/kg), buspirone (BUS, 3 mg/kg), mirtazapine (MIR, 10 mg/kg) and fluoxetine (FLU, 10 mg/kg) in male mice submitted to acute restraint stress, and evaluated using plus-maze discriminative avoidance task (PMDAT), which simultaneously evaluates parameters such as learning, memory and anxiety. Our results demonstrated that (1) the administration of DZP and BUS, but not FLU, promoted anxiolytic effects in animals; (2) administration mirtazapine caused sedative effect to animals; (3) in the training session, the animals treated with BUS, MIR and FLU learned the task, on the other hand DZP group showed impairment in learning; (4) in the test session, animals treated with DZP, BUS, and MIR showed deficits in relation to discrimination between the enclosed arms, aversive versus non-aversive arm, demonstrating an impairment in memory, however, animals treated with FLU showed no interference in the retrieval of this memory; (5) acute stress did not interfere in locomotor activity, anxiety, or learning on the learning task, but induced impairment in retrieval memory, and the group treated with FLU did not demonstrated this deficit of memory . These results suggest that acute administration of drugs with anxiolytic and antidepressant activity does not interfere with the learning process this aversive task, but impair its retrieval, as well as the acute restraint stress. However, the antidepressant fluoxetine was able to reverse memory deficits promoted by acute stress, which may suggest that modulation, even acutely serotonergic neurotransmission, by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of this neurotransmitter, interferes on the process of retrieval of an aversive memory / O fisiologista H. Selye definiu estresse como a resposta n?o espec?fica do organismo a quaisquer fatores que coloquem em risco a homeostase (equil?brio do meio interno) do indiv?duo.

Efeitos dependentes do tempo em vigas pré-moldadas compostas com lajes alveolares e vinculações semi-rígidas / Time-dependent effect on composite precast beams with hollow core slabs and semi-rigid connections

Luis Fernando Sampaio Soares 03 February 2011 (has links)
In this research, time-dependent effects in precast concrete beams, prestressed or not, with posterior concreting resulting in a structure of a composite cross section with hollow core slabs, usual in buildings floors, and made continuous with semi-rigid connection are studied. The restraint stresses caused by the effects of the shrinkage and creep of the various concretes involved and possible relaxation of the prestressed tendons in the extremities of these beams imply in a rearrangement of time-dependent stresses, leading to axial deflection and rotations in the element. This analysis is made using the finite element based program CONS for non-linear analysis of progressively assembled concrete structures, applied in representative samples. CONS presented great accuracy in the evaluation of time effects supported by experimental studies. Based on a study of two precast concrete structures examples, it was observed that: a) the restraint stresses lead to sensible modifications in the connection, influencing on the cracking of the piece and in the final bending moment with changes of 80% for the reinforced concrete sample, and sign inversion for the prestressed one; b) In comparison among the others, the axial deformation had a greater influence in time effects in the samples analyzed, with increases after the last load of 90% in the prestressed example; c) the differential shrinkage between concretes of different ages has generated great tensile stresses, specially on the interface.

Função da neurotransmissão noradrenérgica do núcleo medial da amígdala na modulação do sistema cardiovascular em ratos / Noradrenergic neurotransmission function of the medial nucleus of the amygdala in the modulation of the cardiovascular system in rats.

Eduardo Albino Trindade Fortaleza 21 March 2013 (has links)
ABSTRACT FORTALEZA, E. A. T. Noradrenergic neurotransmission function of the medial nucleus of the amygdala in the modulation of the cardiovascular system in rats. 2013. 153p. Thesis (Doctoral) School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, 2013. The medial amygdaloid nucleus (MeA) regulates a variety of physiological and behavioral processes, as well as regulation of the cardiovascular system during aversive situations. Moreover, there is evidence indicating that noradrenergic receptors are present into the MeA and that the levels of noradrenaline (NA) in this nucleus increases when animals are submitted to acute restraint model. Therefore, this study was divided into two parts: 1) we tested the effects of local NA microinjection into the MeA on cardiovascular responses in unaesthetized rats. Moreover, we describe the type of adrenoceptors activated and the peripheral mechanisms involved in the cardiovascular responses and 2) we investigated the involvement of MeA adrenoceptors in the modulation of cardiovascular responses that are observed during acute restraint. The first part of our results indicated that increasing doses of NA (3, 9, 27 or 45 nmol/ 100nL) microinjected into the MeA of unanesthetized rats caused dose-related pressor and bradycardiac responses. The cardiovascular effects of NA were abolished by MeA local pretreatment with 10 nmol/ 100nL of the specific 2-adrenoceptor antagonist RX821002, but were not affected by local pretreatment with 10 nmol/100nL of the specific 1-adrenoceptor antagonist WB4101. The magnitude of pressor response evoked by NA microinjected into the MeA was potentiated by intravenous pretreatment with the ganglion blocker pentolinium (5 mg/kg, i.v.) and blocked by intravenous pretreatment with the selective V1 vasopressin antagonist dTyr (CH2)5(Me) AVP (50 g/Kg, i.v.). Our results suggest that microinjection of NA into the MeA of unanesthetized rats activates local 2- adrenoceptors, evoking pressor and bradycardiac responses, which are mediated by vasopressin release in the blood circulation. The vasopressin is synthesized by magnocellular cells of paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the hypothalamus. Thus, it was investigated the role of these hypothalamic nucleus on the cardiovascular pathway activated by the microinjection of NA into the MeA. Pressor and bradycardiac responses to NA (27nmol/100nL) were blocked when cobalt chloride (CoCl2, 1mM/100nL) was microinjected into the PVN or SON, thus indicating that both hypothalamic nucleus are responsible for the mediation of the cardiovascular responses evoked by NA microinjection into the MeA. Our results suggest that pressor and bradycardic responses caused by NA microinjection into the MeA are mediated by magnocellular neurons in the PVN and SON. In the second part of this study Male Wistar rats received bilateral microinjections of the selective 1-adrenoceptor antagonist WB4101 (10, 15, and 20 nmoL/100nL) or the selective 2-adrenoceptor antagonist RX821002 (10, 15, and 20 nmoL/nL) into the MeA, 10 min before the exposure to acute restraint. The injection of WB4101 into the MeA reduced the restraint-evoked tachycardia. In contrast, the injection of RX821002 increased the tachycardia. Both drugs had no effect on the BP increase observed during the acute restraint. Our findings indicate that 1 and 2-adrenoceptors in the MeA play different roles in the modulation of the HR increase evoked by restraint stress in rats. Results suggest that 1-adrenoceptors and 2-adrenoceptors respectively mediate the MeA facilitatory and inhibitory influences on restraint-related HR responses. Moreover, we investigated the involvement of -adrenoceptors in the MeA in cardiovascular responses evoked in rats submitted to an acute restraint stress. We first pretreated Wistar rats with the nonselective -adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol, microinjected bilaterally into the MeA (10, 15, and 20 nmol/100nL) 10 min before exposure to acute restraint. The pretreatment with propranolol did not affect the BP increase evoked by restraint. However, it increased the tachycardiac response caused by acute restraint when animals were pretreated with a dose of 15 nmol, without a significant effect on the BP response. This result indicates that -adrenoceptors in the MeA have an inhibitory influence on restraintevoked HR changes. Pretreatment with the selective 2- adrenoceptor antagonist ICI 118,551 (10, 15, and 20 nmol/100 nL) significantly increased the restraint evoked tachycardiac response after the doses of 15 and 20 nmol, an effect that was similar to that observed after the pretreatment with propranolol at the dose of 15 nmol, without a significant effect on the BP response. Pretreatment of the MeA with the selective 1-adrenoceptor antagonist CGP 20712 (10, 15, and 20 nmol/100nL) caused an opposite effect on the HR response, and a significant decrease in the restraint-evoked tachycardia was observed only after the dose of 20nmol, without a significant effect on the BP response. Because propranolol is an equipotent antagonist of both 1 and 2-adrenoceptors, and opposite effects were observed after the treatment with the higher doses of the selective antagonists ICI 118,551 and CGP 20712, the narrow window in the dose-response to propranolol could be explained by a functional antagonism resulting from the simultaneous inhibition of 1 and 2-adrenoceptors by the treatment with propranolol.

Évaluation et modélisation des dispositifs de retenue pour motards / Design and Assessment of Motorcyclists Restraint Systems

Kodjo, Vidjannagni 02 September 2016 (has links)
At the same time, even though motorcyclists impact crashes against the road restraint systems represent on average 10% of accidents in road traffic, motorcyclists present a risk of death from30 to 80 times upper than the risk of death for users of vehicles involved in the same type of accidents. To enhance the safety of motorcyclists, Vehicle Restraints Systems (VRS) arefitted to the lower part of restraint systems for motorcyclists. Motorcyclist’s Restraint Systems (MRS) are designed to absorb shocks gradually and to preventmotorcyclists to pass through the lower part of VRS, to hit a post and be severely injured. Before being installed on the roadsides, MRS have to be crash-tested according to standards in order to evaluate their safety and ensure motorcyclists safety. However, there are only normative procedures to testMRS, the LIER procedurein the French context and the procedure EN1317-8 in the European context. To assess both normative procedures and propose new provisions which can be used as normative procedure more advanced on the protocol of MRS performances evaluation tests, numerical simulations were performed. A numerical model of MRS was developed and correlated on one real impact test on other device of same type. Once correlated, the model was used to conduct a parametric study on the test conditions and thematerialsmechanical properties of the MRS. Finally, a new demarche of MRS performances evaluation was developed

Analyse de sensibilité et robustesse dans le génie industriel : méthodologies et applications aux essais de chocs / Sensitivity and robustness in industrial engineering : methodologies and applications to crash tests

Qian, Gengjian 05 April 2017 (has links)
More than 1 million people die in crashes on the world’s roads and many millions are seriously injured each year. According to the studies: Run-Off-Road accidents (ROR), i.e. the vehicle run-off the road into the roadside and has at least one collision with either roadside equipment or the roadside itself, “represent about 10% of the total road accidents, while 45% of all fatal accidents are ROR”. Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRS) are the infrastructures installed on the road to provide a level of containment for an errant vehicle. Safety barrier is “continuous VRS installed alongside, or on the central reserve, of a road to prevent errant vehicles from crashing on roadside obstacles, and to retain them safely”. Statistic results show that “the existence of protective barriers on road can reduce fatalities up to a factor of 4 when compared to collisions against other road obstacles.” The life-saving performances of a VRS depend on the design of the device. Standards such as EN1317 normalized the impact conditions under which a design of VRS must be tested by crash tests, and defined the criteria for performance evaluation of a design. While a VRS cannot really be optimized: Multi-criteria exist for performance evaluation of a VRS and all the criteria cannot be optimized in the same time; the impact conditions of the VRS with the errant vehicle are numerous; uncertain factors of the VRS may degrade the performances of a design. The thesis aims to define an approach that can serve: sensitivity analysis (SA) and robust design of the VRS; Enrichment for the existing standards in the design of VRS. The case of a safety barrier is specified in the study: a safety barrier has been test experimentally, the program Ls-Dyna was used for crash simulation of the device; considering properties of the crash model, efficiencies of different SA methods were studied and influences of the critical factors whose uncertainties contribute the most to the instability of the barrier were quantified with the selected SA approaches; considering the uncertainties of the critical factors, Multi-Objective robust optimization of the tested barrier were realized; under different impact conditions, crash simulations of the optimized barrier were carried out to evaluate its performances in the real crash accidents. The approaches presented in the article can be useful for the design of other VRS or more broadly, other complex engineering systems. Hopefully, the robustness analysis and generalization analysis (i.e. performance evaluation of the VRS under different impact conditions) of the safety barrier could enrich the standards for the design of VRS

The constructive solution aimed to simulate an automobile collision and uses dummies representing children for the purposes of demonstration effect and conviction about the need to retain children in motor vehicles. This is a sled, guided, moving on rails being pulled by steel cable and capable of, without permanent damage, crash into a deformable barrier impact.
