Nourishing the Self: Cookbooks as AutobiographyBarlow, Rebecca Quist 09 March 2012 (has links)
Though casual readers may often assume cookbooks are primarily reference materials, cookbooks actually offer readers a type of autobiography; I examine cookbooks as literary autobiographical acts by analyzing three celebrity chefs' cookbooks and the recent film, Julie and Julia. Julie and Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, illustrates several key autobiographical ideas, specifically Barthes' ideas of readerly and writerly texts and the distinction between an author and a persona. The film acts as a visual representation of the way a reader engages with a text and makes it a writerly text while successfully distinguishing between an author and a persona/narrator. After a brief review of autobiography theory through Julie and Julia, the three selected authors' work further magnifies the ideas. The first celebrity chef, David Lebovitz, uses a highly narrative style and incorporates numerous autobiographical details into his books. The second, Ina Garten, utilizes different methods of creating a persona, including photography. The third chef, Dorie Greenspan, uses the same methods used by Lebovitz and Garten, but has been replicated extensively in online baking groups, making her texts ideal for understanding the role of the reader in an autobiography. The work of these three authors illustrates well how autobiographies function and how readers can reiterate their own autobiographies through the books and food they consume.

Prometheus Abandoned : Figural Eddies as an Alternative Method of Reading Out 1: Noli me tangere / Prometheus övergiven : figurala virvlar som en alternativ metod till att läsa Out 1: Noli me tangereAndersson, Martin January 2014 (has links)
The thesis combines D.N. Rodowick’s concept of the figural, denoting the complex nature of filmic signification; Roland Barthes’ distinctions between the readerly and the writerly, which are different methods of engaging with a text; and Thierry Kuntzel’s concept of semiotic constellations, the reading of recurring yet fragmented motifs that occur throughout the film. Here reintroduced through the concept of eddies—discursive fields within the film which displace the connection between the signifier and signified (the flow of signification), instead distinguished by signifiers engendering new signifiers (the swirl of signification)—to unlock a new method of reading a film. This method focuses on interpreting the latent meanings of the plural of the text; the residual signs in the film which hold little to no bearing on its narrative, but through their deconstruction and later reassembly they may guide to viewer to new meanings. By first delineating the method proposed for this type of reading, the thesis then applies this method to the reading of one such eddy in the art-film Out 1: Noli me tangere from 1970, which is connected to the discursive field of Prometheus Bound, a play rehearsed within the film by a group of six actors who engage in various exercises, which at first glance seem to be entirely unconnected to the play. In this case, the method reveals through the figural activity of the film that the exercises of the group are engaged in dialogue with themes touched upon in the play.

What is proposed in this study is to investigate the procedures in a literary work lead to the effect of "Out in the language." What is this out? Range of effects that produce? What procedures exist to make it into a work of art, literature in particular? Here are some of the issues that concern us.
To develop such a search to search out , we use as support and theoretical corpus authors who followed the trail out of the language , such as Roland Barthes , Maurice Blanchot , Gilles Deleuze , Félix Guattari Pierre - Tatiana Salem Levy , among others . Will be from five previously selected works will explore some of the procedures that lead to out , as well as its concept applied to literature : " The Third Bank of the River " and " My Uncle Iauaretê " , Guimarães Rosa , Mar Paraguayo , Wilson Bueno , Bodenlos : a philosophical autobiography, Flusser and Bartleby , the scribe Herman Melville . Our goal is not to analyze such works , but from them , watching some of the procedures that lead to out . Therefore , we will take them only the necessary cutouts .
Talk about what force thought to think , from the foregoing thinking . We will speak out and the plane of immanence ; bodies without organs , the molecular and molar becomings . We will talk about lines , points , meetings , trails , machinery, surface registration , production , process, flows and ruptures . Speak of thresholds ; inset ; gradients ; fragmentation ; lines and edges that crumble , unfold, invaginate , explode , intensities and powers ; territorialization and deterritorialization.

Nyckelord: Jacob de Wet, restorationen, Stuart, porträtt, porträttserier, tidigmodern tid,Skottland, Palace of Holyroodhouse, semiotik, Roland Barthes.

Vad kommunicerar fotografier av kvinnokroppar i brygga?Björndotter, Annika January 2021 (has links)
This paper analyzes and compares two photographs of women doing backbends. One is a modern Instagram photo of a female yogi by Alessandro Sigismondi and the other one of a patient diagnosed with hysteria at the Salpêtrières Hospital, photographed in Paris in the 19th century. The photographs are used as a starting point for further discussion about the meaning of images where women are doing backbends. The aim is to understand what these kinds of photographs represent and communicate. The theoretical framework is based on Roland Barthes idea of defining photography out of three perspectives as described in Camera Lucida, the referent’s, the photographer’s and the spectators. Laura Mulvey's thoughts on the male gaze in "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" is a theoretical complement. The method used is Roland Bathes semiotic method from the essay Rhetoric of the image. The study shows how the photographic occasion's imprint of reality is deeply colored by the events, relationships and expectations from outside. Despite the large difference in time, there are great similarities in how the ideal female body is exposed and how women manage and maneuver within the space constructed by the male gaze.

Verklighetens språk : Verklighetseffekt och journalistiska influenser i Tom Wolfes A Man in FullHultqvist, Kristian January 2023 (has links)
Tom Wolfe was a founding father of New Journalism, revolutionizing journalistic reporting by introducing literary tools of storytelling. The literary influence on New Journalism is well-covered by journalism scholars, but Wolfe was also a fiction writer, and as such he actively tried to rally his generation of fiction writers behind him for a New Social Novel, more grounded in reality and reporting. His post-postmodern novels also amalgamate journalism and literature, but how and to what extent journalism influenced his fiction writing is a story yet untold. Wolfe provided a normative blueprint for how to achieve verisimilitude in fiction, in his literary manifesto: “Stalking the Billion-Footed Beast”. At about the same time, he started writing the novel A Man in Full. Using A Man in Full as an application of his ideas of the ideal novel, this thesis investigates how Wolfe constructed the reality effect in his fiction and foregrounds the origins of Tom Wolfe’s literary voice, focusing on onomatopoetic language, statuspheric minutiae, expressive punctuation, and Wolfe’s characteristic wake-the-dead prose style. I argue that Wolfe did reinvent verisimilitude in literary realism, but not in the way that he intended, through reporting and status details, but rather through language.

Multiple Layers and Flavors: The “Death of the Author” in Like Water for ChocolateMarquez, Melanie Lucia 05 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
First published in 1989 in Spanish and then in 1992 in English, Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate is one of the best known Mexican literary works in the United States. Set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, Esquivel's novel has inspired great diversity of critical analysis among critics and scholars. Based on the author's comment regarding her intention to tell entertaining stories, critic Jay Corwin warns against the search for hidden layers to her work. Using as a framework Barthes's notion of the "death of the author" as well as cultural theory's argument that "discourse writes through the author", this work unfolds a diverse array of discourses, such as that of feminism, patriarchy, and parody, that liberate Like Water for Chocolate from the despotism of a single authority controlling the truth of the text and show that the readers are capable of intervening in the work's meaning.
