This dissertation approaches the problem of violence against women in Brazilian rural areas. The review of the international literature on the theme reaches three dimensions that impact violence against women in rural areas: isolation, family, and community. It aims to deepen the existing literature through the understanding of the different factors associated with the difficulty of rural women to emerge from situations of violence. In order to do this, the field-theme methodology was used, allowing a multi-methods approach to the problem in three dimensions: international literature, secondary data and case study in the state of Pernambuco. The international documents reinforce factors in the literature, pointing to the geographical isolation and greater vulnerability of women in rural areas. Secondary data indicate that the socioeconomic indicators of women in rural areas are worse than the other groups. In addition, the analysis of secondary data on violence against women in rural areas shows the Disque-180 data, but reveal the fragility of existing data. Finally, the Pernambuco case study made it possible to reinforce and relativize the dimensions found in the literature through interviews with women that live in rural area, in addition to pointing out strategies and challenges of the Mobile Units Program in the state.

Improving the well-being of the poor through microfinance : evidence from the Small Enterprise Foundation in South Africa

Kirsten, Maria Albertina 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Poverty in South Africa’s rural areas is complex and severe, especially among female-headed households. The marginalisation of South Africa’s rural areas over a period of decades resulted in an acute lack of economic opportunities, limited infrastructure and a serious breakdown of social capital. Women living in rural areas are particularly poor in moneymetric terms; they are often illiterate and therefore isolated from economic and social opportunities; and many fall victim to violence in the household. They eke out a meagre existence, based on small-scale agriculture, marginal self-employment or limited wage and remittance income. While such income diversification, combined with the government’s range of development interventions, helps to buffer them against risks such as illness, death and disaster, rural poverty is not just a matter of income and assets. It is also rooted in other disadvantages, such as exclusion, disempowerment and unequal power relations. These all contribute to making poverty a multidimensional phenomenon. The South African government has committed significant resources to poverty intervention over the past 17 years. These interventions, which include social assistance grants, basic municipal services and free water, electricity, schooling and health services, certainly have an impact on the livelihoods of the rural poor, but they do not seem to bring a significant improvement in the standard of living of the most vulnerable people in marginalised areas. There is increasing recognition in the poverty literature that vulnerabilities – of income, health, social exclusion and service delivery – are linked, and that support programmes should focus not only on increasing the poor’s access to resources and assets but also on empowering individuals to use these assets and make decisions. This study investigates the potential of microfinance to address the overlapping vulnerabilities experienced by women in South Africa’s rural areas. It suggests that microfinance has the potential to generate positive shifts in selected indicators of empowerment and well-being among participating women in rural areas. These claims are tested by evaluating data gathered among clients of the Small Enterprise Foundation (SEF) against a conceptual framework. The framework offers a stepwise progression away from vulnerability: acquiring internal skills (empowerment), strengthening social capital, accumulating assets and, eventually, transforming these assets into wealth. Existing datasets, gathered over a period of five years in rural Limpopo and representing both a group that received microfinance from SEF and a control group, were examined. No evidence could be found that the recipients of SEF’s microfinance experienced increased empowerment, but the results did provide evidence that belonging to the group that received microfinance increased the likelihood of experiencing livelihood security and well-being. The findings show that microfinance can, even over the short term, make a difference in people’s ability to smooth their consumption and, as such, provide them with more secure livelihoods. The research also suggests that microfinance assists women in rural areas in constructing and maintaining a portfolio of assets, thus improving well-being among the recipients of microfinance. The scope of the study was confined to measuring the effect of microfinance on selected poverty indicators, and it did not attempt to prove that microfinance alleviates poverty. As such, the research demonstrates that the government’s efforts to reduce rural poverty can be complemented by micro-level interventions such as access to finance.

The identity, agency and political influence of al-Hakkamat Baggara women poets in armed conflict in Darfur, Sudan, from 1980s to 2006

Musa, Suad Mustafa Elhag January 2011 (has links)
This research explores the role of al-Hakkamat rural women poets in the context of armed conflict in Darfur, from 1980s to 2006. Utilising QSR NVivo7 software, the study analyses and interprets qualitatively collected data in the light of the posed research questions. Processes and attributes leading to the identification of al-Hakkamah, such as her singing and composing talents, are explored - from identifying and nurturing to fully constructing her role as a folk singer and agitator as well as a powerful social actor. Her nurtured personal and social identities reconstruct for her gender roles that are found to be both feared and revered by the community and appropriated by the government. She is found to respond effectively to situations ranging from gallantry (lauding), solidarity (lobbying) to downright belligerency (inciting). These roles exhibit robust and proactive gender roles and power relations in Darfur that enable women, not without historical precedence, to exercise their own identity, agency and political influence in an otherwise overwhelmingly patriarchal society. The study also reveals that the conflict of Darfur is rooted in the history of the neopatrimonial domestic politics pursued by the riverine ruling elites, marked by systemic failure to manage resource issues equitably between tribal and ethnic entities in Darfur. In such circumstances, al-Hakkamat agency is either volunteered or enlisted in the attempt to secure an advantage. In either case her agency is verifiably seen to bolster the hypothesis that rural women in Darfur exercise more power than their counterparts in rural northern Sudan.

Silva, Tamara Raísa Bubanz January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to identify the dynamics of social actors related to the theme of medicinal plants in the context of the Northwest Region of Rio Grande do Sul. The study sought to follow the social practices in order to retrieve and analyze the trajectory of the Forum for Life, identify locally rooted practices working with medicinal plants and analyze in depth the experience of farmacinha Alternative Health in Santo Cristo / RS. The Forum for Life was created in the late 1990s, in Rio Grande do Sul, mobilizing large numbers of people interested or involved with the theme of medicinal plants, health, medicine production, public policy, protection of biodiversity. After a demobilizing process at the state level, the only forum that continued acting was the Northwest Region. To analyze these processes, Oriented Perspective to Actors (POA) was used. To this end the work initially presents the study site and introduces the discussion on the development and battle skills. To then analyze the trajectory of the Forum for Life as state and local organization, with the crosscutting issues, knowledge interfaces that run through the forums. In the last part of the paper analyzes the farmacinha Health Alternative identifying what were the everyday problems that fomented the organization of women, bringing the discussion on health as a crosscutting theme. In addressing the social action and the fight for the rescue of knowledge about medicinal plants, it became clear how different development projects affecting the daily lives of individuals and how they find ways out and mobilize maneuvers.

The economic impact of agricultural co-operatives on women in the rural areas of Polokwane Municipality

Tauatsoala, Mahlola Michael January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (M.Dev.) --University of Limpopo, 2011 / The introduction and establishment of co-operatives by the State was for purposes of fighting and alleviating poverty through creating jobs, particularly in the rural areas, which were mostly neglected by the previous apartheid State. In order to deal with these social ills and malady, the new democratic government introduced cooperatives to mitigate these challenges. These good intensions are often countered by lack of commitment by State officials and reluctance from other institutions to assist co-operatives to be catalysts in fighting poverty and unemployment in South Africa, despite their noble intentions. In other developed countries, co-operatives are given serious attention, not only because they are catalysts in poverty alleviation, but because they can make huge economic interventions with regard to economic growth and economic development. The intention of this study was to make an assessment of whether or not agricultural co-operatives have any economic impact on women in the rural areas of Polokwane Municipality, since their inception as entities for local economic development. The study also assesses whether or not the State supports these entities in a variety of forms. For this purpose, four co-operatives have been used as a Case Study, namely, Mashashane Agricultural Co-operative at Ga-Mashashane; Phegelelo Agricultural Co-operative at Ga-Thaba village; Mothiba Agricultural Co-operative at Ga-Mothiba; and Itireleng Agricultural Co-operative at Matamanyane village in Moletjie

Depression risk : an examination of rural low income mothers

Guyer, Amy M. 07 March 2003 (has links)
This study used a multi-method approach to explore factors associated with high and low depression in a sample of rural mothers living in poverty. From a sample of 117 women with very high or very low CES-D depression scores, 40 cases were randomly selected for in-depth qualitative analysis. Qualitative comments about a variety of issues were explored including health, mental health, childcare, transportation, community, social support, and family of origin experiences. Quantitative data were then used in response to themes that emerged from the literature and the qualitative findings. All 117 eligible participants were used for quantitative analysis to increase power. Analysis of the qualitative data revealed several critical differences between the two groups. Low risk participants mentioned fewer health issues and less severe health problems as compared to their high risk counterparts. Mental health issues were reported more in the high risk group, with this group being more likely to have multiple family members experiencing symptoms. All participants reported receiving social support, however, the low risk group reported positive social support experiences, while the high risk group reported ambivalent relationships with the people who provided them with social support. Reported family of origin experiences were quite different between the two groups, with the low risk group reporting more positive past and current relationships. Quantitatively, several interesting results were revealed, many confirming the qualitative findings. Mothers showing higher levels of depression reported significantly more health problems for themselves, their partners, and their children. Additionally, participant's work status, income, perceived adequacy of income, childhood welfare use, and presence of partner were significantly related to depression. Low risk respondents were more likely to be working, perceive their income as adequate, and have a partner. They were also less likely to have received welfare as a child and had higher incomes. The findings offer important implications for future research and policy. Risk for depression seems to be related to a variety of factors, indicating that something should be done to minimize an individual's likelihood toward experiencing depression. This study ultimately provided a clearer picture of the existence of depressive symptoms among women with children living in rural poverty. / Graduation date: 2003

Some Demographic Aspects of Women’s Access to Land for Farming in South Africa: A comparison from 2004 to 2007.

Nyirasafari, Philomene. January 2010 (has links)

The issue of women&rsquo / s access to land is a developmental issue. From a fundamental research view point, this study aims to explore the circumstances in which women access land in South Africa. The study examines the inequalities that may arise in the context of land access, land acquisition / land use, activities taking place on land and closely related issues focusing specifically on women in general, and women headed households in particular. The study is based on demographic characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, occupational groups, education, province of residence and ethnic groups. Bringing together the demographic variables and land related variables, the study captures the structural changes between 2004 and 2007. Using 2004 and 2007 GHS secondary data requested from Statistics South Africa, cross tabulation and bivariate statistical analysis by means of SPSS software was performed. The results obtained indicate that the inequality against women&rsquo / s access to land still persists. Some women have access to land for agricultural purpose but few own it. The findings suggest that a number of factors including age, place of residence, marital status, ethnic group, literacy, educational level, of women are associated with the ability of women to access and acquire land. The sustainable livelihood framework is a theory that guided this study. Diversification is commonly used to prevent time of risks and shocks. In general, the study shows that the proportion of women who had access to land was 16% in 2004. This figure dropped to 14% in 2007.

Rural Development And Women

Furat, Mina 01 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This Dissertation analyzes the conditions, problems and potential of rural women&rsquo / s empowerment through a sample of rural women&rsquo / s organizations (two women&rsquo / s cooperative, seven rural development cooperative and one village women associaton) with interpreting DAWN iniative and GAD approach with a socialist feminist perspective. In this study, it is stated that the agricultural sector policies and rural development policy were constructed in relation with the conditions of underdevelopment and thus, in relation with the agreements with IMF, WTO and IPARD Programme of EU which enforced the decreasing of agricultural sector subsidies. It is notable that these policies are formulated with an aim of increasing the influence and significance of capitalist relations in agricultural sector and rural areas without taking precautions for the survival of small sized farming households in rural areas. Despite these general influences of underdevelopment to Turkish Agricultural Sector and patriarchal gender assumptions, these women&rsquo / s organizations could be successful to some extent empowering their members with the recognized dimensions of empowerment such as / psychological, economical, social, organizational and political. All these dimensions are interrelated with each other. In this study, it was observed that while economic empowerment and psychological empowerment is the base of all other dimensions of empowerment, social empowerment and organizational empowerment are the most dynamic processes of empowerment and political empowerment is hardest dimension or outcome to achieve.

Women of rice, women of millet : a comparison of female participation in wet and dry cultivation in Tamil Nadu, South India

Nanaumi, Yumiko January 1995 (has links)
Women's status in Indian agrarian communities has been discussed in terms of cultural and agricultural practices, which affect women adversely in the northwestern wheat region and favourably in the southern rice region. The correlation is tested by the female farm labour participation (FLP) rate and the juvenile sex ratio (JSR). / I examine the correlation between women's contribution to agriculture and their status in wet paddy and dry millet regions in Tamil Nadu. Compared to northwestern India, the JSRs are more balanced and FLPs are high in both regions, yet the implications of high FLPs differ. Thanjavur shows a high female labour participation in peak seasons, but year-round underemployment. In Kongu, the cultivation of garden crops requires both male and female labour throughout the year. / The contrasts originate from varied factors such as ecology and irrigation, cropping system, the distribution of land wealth, and on- and off-farm employment opportunities.
