Evolution of Neutral Hydrogen Properties of Galaxies With Respect to Large-Scale Structure Over One-Third the Age of the UniverseBlue Bird, Julia AM January 2021 (has links)
Measurements of hydrogen are important in our understanding of the Universe. Following reionization at z ∼ 6, most of the hydrogen outside galaxies is in an ionized state. Within galaxies, hydrogen passes through a neutral phase as it cools and collapses into molecular hydrogen and then to stars. This work centers around how galactic reservoirs of neutral hydrogen (HI) evolve over cosmic time. We know that cosmic star formation peaks at z ∼ 2 and sharply declines to the present day, yet we know very little about the gas reservoirs in individual galaxies that lead to star formation through these redshifts. The Very Large Array’s (VLA) recent upgrade has made it possible to probe a large instantaneous bandwidth with HI imaging surveys beyond the local Universe. The COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES) is a 1000-hour program using the Karl G. Jansky VLA that will image HI in a redshift range of 0 < z < 0.45. With our first epoch of data, we study the galaxy properties of a sample of ten nearby galaxies.
We find that our data follow known scaling relations. Both theory and observations suggest that large-scale structure impacts galaxy evolution in addition to known trends in local density. We find that galaxy spins tend to be aligned with cosmic web filaments and a hint of the predicted transition mass associated with the spin angle alignment. With our second epoch of data from the CHILES survey, we probe the high-redshift regime. We present two new HI detections at z = 0.257 and z = 0.258, plus a stacked result at z ∼ 0.36. We combine these results with the previously published CHILES samples. This provides, for the first time, a continuous look at directly detected HI in emission over redshift range 0 < z < 0.45. We strengthen our epoch one comic web results, finding a perpendicular galaxy spin alignment with the cosmic web for a high-mass HI detection and a parallel galaxy spin alignment for a gas-rich low-mass HI detection embedded within a cosmic web filament. Having HI content, morphology, and kinematics, along with knowledge of the large-scale environments across substantial cosmic time spanning one-third the age of the Universe, will help shed light on the overall origin and fate of gas in galaxies.

Language Maintenance in Utah: Spanish Heritage Speakers' Attitudes and Language UseEscobar Rodriguez, Perla Y. 13 December 2021 (has links)
The current study quantitatively and qualitatively investigated Spanish maintenance among 45 Spanish heritage language (SHL) speakers in Utah who completed a survey about their linguistic background, their attitudes toward Spanish, their self-rated Spanish proficiency, and their current Spanish usage. Nine participants were also interviewed to expound on their linguistic experience. Previous studies on language maintenance (Alba et al., 2002; Carreira & Kagan, 2011; Lanier, 2014; Lynch, 2000; Mejías et al., 2002; Potowski, 2004; Silva-Corvalán, 1994; Zentella, 1997) have analyzed different sociolinguistics factors that relate to Spanish maintenance and usage in areas with high Hispanic populations. Nevertheless, little research has been done in locations with lower Hispanic concentrations such as in Indiana (Barbosa, 2015), Washington (Fernández-Mallat & Carey, 2017) and Kansas (Showstack & Guzman, 2020). Due to the limited research in these areas, the current study examined Spanish language maintenance of second-generation (G2) and generation 1.5 (G1.5) SHL speakers. Findings suggest that although participants have positive attitudes toward Spanish, they feel more confident communicating in English and have limited contact with the Spanish-speaking community and limited use of Spanish. However, results show that participants have a higher use of Spanish and greater connection with the Hispanic community due to their participation in Spanish-speaking religious congregations. Thus, the unique bilingual atmosphere that exists in Utah due to the cultural influence that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has and Utah’s government objective to bring about a multilingual workforce through bilingual education may aid in Spanish maintenance in this state among future SHL speakers.

Analysis of Inlet Distortion Patterns on Distortion Transfer and Generation Through a Highly Loaded Fan StageOrme, Andrew Dallin 04 August 2020 (has links)
Characterization of distortion transfer and generation through fans with distorted inlet conditions enables progress towards designs with improved distortion tolerance. The abruptness of transition from undistorted to distorted total pressure regions at the inlet impacts the induced swirl profile and therefore the distortion transfer and generation. These impacts are characterized using URANS simulations of PBS Rotor 4 geometry under a variety of inlet distortion profiles. A 90° and a 135° sector, both of 15% total pressure distortion, are considered. Variants of each sector size, with decreasing levels of distortion transition abruptness, are each applied to the fan. Fourier-based distortion descriptors are used to quantify levels of distortion transfer and generation at axial locations through the fan, principally at the stator inlet. It is shown that a gradual transition in distortion at the inlet results in decreased levels of distortion transfer and generation. The flow physics resulting in this reduction are explored. URANS simulations involving turbomachinery are complex and often require simplifying assumptions to balance computational costs with accuracy. One assumption removes the need for a nozzle to control nozzle operation condition and replaces it with a static pressure boundary condition located at the stator exit. This assumption is challenged by conducting a series of distorted inlet simulations with a nozzle, which are then compared to a corresponding set of simulations conducted using the exit boundary assumption. Performance parameters for each set of simulations are compared. Performance was observed to be within 1% difference between the two methods, supporting the assumption that a static pressure boundary is adequate for controlling inlet distortion simulations. Finally, full annulus URANS simulations are presented to investigate distortion phase shift in a single stage transonic fan. The fan is subject to a 90° sector inlet total pressure distortion. Simulation results are presented for choke, design, and near-stall operating conditions. Circumferential profiles of swirl, total pressure, total temperature, power, and phase shift are analyzed at 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90% span. Several metrics for phase shift, which is a measure of the rotational translation of a distortion profile, are presented and compared. Each aims to assist understanding the translational motion of distortion as it passes through the fan. The different metrics used for phase shift are used to analyze distortion phase. Insights from each are presented alongside limitations for each method. A combination of methods is proposed to address their respective limitations.

A Shift-Share Analysis Approach to Understanding the Dynamic of the Portuguese Tourism MarketYasin, Mahmoud, Alavi, Jafar, Sobral, Filipe 23 February 2005 (has links)
The growth in the global tourism market place presents many countries with great opportunities to capitalize on their natural competitive advantages. However, achieving the economic potential of global tourism remains elusive for many countries despite their natural advantages. In this context, Portugal is a case in point. The Portuguese tourism industry is facing some serious challenges that are limiting its potential. This study utilizes the shift-share technique in order to offer Portuguese policy-makers systematic and practical insights into the characteristics of the Portuguese tourism industry in the context of the challenges and opportunities of the global tourism market place. Understanding the dynamics and characteristics of the Portuguese tourism industry in a comparative context is a crucial first step toward formulating a strategy aimed at improving Portuguese competitive standing in the growing tourism market.

From Reified Abstractions to Situated Contexts: Feminist Jurisprudence, Paradigm Shift and Legal ChangePetoussi, Vassiliki Jr. 04 February 1998 (has links)
This study addresses the extent to which feminist jurisprudence literature has developed the potential to initiate a legal paradigm shift leading to legal and consequent social change that would alleviate gender inequality. Drawing upon Kuhn's (1970) and Stacey and Thorne's (1985) arguments, I theorized that for a paradigm shift centered upon women and women's experiences to occur, feminist jurisprudence, particularly second- and third-phase feminist jurisprudence, needs to be incorporated into, and accepted by the mainstream. Through quantitative analysis I evaluated, first, the publication and citation patterns and the diffusion of feminist jurisprudence litearature as evidenced in articles published between the years 1983 and 1994 in legal journals assigned impact factors by the Social Science Citation Index. Second, using content analysis, I classified feminist jurisprudence articles published in the subfields of family and penal law --theorized to differ in degree of androcentrism-- according to the three phases of feminist jurisprudence theory. My quantitative analysis showed that the number of feminist jurisprudence articles published in mainstream legal journals is increasing over time. Further, feminist jurisprudence articles published in legal journals with higher impact factors tend to receive larger numbers of citations than articles published in journals with lower impact factors. Finally, although the overall impact factor of journals publishing feminist jurisprudence articles is declining, feminist jurisprudence literature is present among a wide spectrum of legal specializations. My qualitative analysis showed that there was an equivalent number of family and penal law articles which exhibited second- and third-phase characteristics. However, family law articles tended to cover a wider range of topics than penal law articles. Furthermore, family law scholars were more likely than penal law scholars to address issues of differences among women and feminists, thus, exhibiting third-phase characteristics. In constrast, penal law scholars tended to focus upon differences between feminists and non-feminists and the practical difficulties resulting from the structure, organization and practitioners of the criminal justice. Overall, my analysis showed that feminist jurisprudence appears to have developed the potential to initiate a paradigm shift within the legal discipline. However, in addition to feminist theorizing, feminist activism is important for the realization of legal and social changes that will alleviate gender inequality. / Ph. D.

Impact of a Standardized Tool on Handoff Quality in Nurse Change-of-Shift ReportsAyala, Wilma Lonzame 01 January 2017 (has links)
Within the context of healthcare delivery, human lives are at risk when health care professionals fail to communicate effectively. Audits by The Joint Commission from 1995 to 2005 revealed that 65% of sentinel events occurred as a result of staff miscommunication, prompting the requirement that standardized handoff tools be deployed. Therefore, this project was completed to improve safety in the hospital through implementation of a standardized tool that could enhance the quality of nurse handoff communication. Mohorek & Webb's (2015) linear model of communication, which emphasizes the importance of encoding, transmission, and decoding in the communication process, provided the framework for this project. Participants included 11 registered nurses (RNs) and 14 licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) who completed the pre-and-post intervention survey using the Handover Evaluation Scale. The RNs reflected significant difference in improvement in the perceived quality of handoff following the implementation of standardized handoff tool: pre-test (M = 66.91, SD = 7.27) compared to post-test (M = 80.91, SD = 7.45); t(10) = -5.09, p = 0.000. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant change noted with the LVN group before implementation of standardized handoff tool: pre-test (M = 70.71, SD = 9.72) compared to post- test implementation (M = 73.57, SD = 7.73); t(13) = -1.06, p = 0.309. The findings resulting from this project suggest that there are important differences in provider types when using standardized handoff tools and that more attention to this dynamic is warranted. The social change mandate of protecting the safety of patients is enhanced through effective communication among nurses and was demonstrated in the project.

Polisers vänskapsrelationer : En studie om hur polisers vänskapsrelationer skapas, bibehålls & förändras / Police friendship : A study about how police friendship is created, sustained & changeFransson, Oscar January 2021 (has links)
The Swedish police force is characterized by long working hours, shift work and hardworking conditions. This affects the men and women working within the force both mentally and physically. The aim of this study is to see how police officer’s wok life affect their private friendships. I have chosen to use qualitative method in my research to get a deeper understanding on what affects friendships to create, sustain and change when one of the friends is a police officer. I used the snowball effect to help me with this task and interviewed a total of six respondents. To help me analyse the interviews I used three theories them being, Relationships theory, role theory and vocational socialization. With their help I could pick out patterns in the transcribed material that could help me understand better why police officer’s friendship were created, sustained and changed and sometimes even broken. One of the things that I found interesting was that the respondents quickly sorted their friendships between close friends and acquaintances this took me by surprise since I hade been focusing on the definition friendship it had not dawned on me to bring acquaintances to the table. However, I found that all the respondents had only made new friends within the police force or during the police training. The respondents were verry reserved people that did not like to tell people that they were police officers. An other thing that stood out to me was that some of the respondents were more prone to take the time to be with their old friends then others and that some had been more attached to the people that they worked with witch meant that the old friends were not that interesting any more compared to the new friends.
