Augmenting low-fidelity flight simulation training devices via amplified head rotationsLe-Ngoc, Luan January 2013 (has links)
Due to economic and operational constraints, there is an increasing demand from aviation operators and training manufacturers to extract maximum training usage from the lower fidelity suite of flight simulators. It is possible to augment low-fidelity flight simulators to achieve equivalent performance compared to high-fidelity setups but at reduced cost and greater mobility. In particular for visual manoeuvres, the virtual reality technique of head-tracking amplification for virtual view control enables full field-of-regard access even with limited field-of-view displays. This research quantified the effects of this technique on piloting performance, workload and simulator sickness by applying it to a fixed-base, low-fidelity, low-cost flight simulator. In two separate simulator trials, participants had to land a simulated aircraft from a visual traffic circuit pattern whilst scanning for airborne traffic. Initially, a single augmented display was compared to the common triple display setup in front of the pilot. Starting from the base leg, pilots exhibited tighter turns closer to the desired ground track and were more actively conducting visual scans using the augmented display. This was followed up by a second experiment to quantify the scalability of augmentation towards larger displays and field of views. Task complexity was increased by starting the traffic pattern from the downwind leg. Triple displays in front of the pilot yielded the best compromise delivering flight performance and traffic detection scores just below the triple projectors but without an increase in track deviations and the pilots were also less prone to simulator sickness symptoms. This research demonstrated that head augmentation yields clear benefits of quick user adaptation, low-cost, ease of systems integration, together with the capability to negate the impact of display sizes yet without incurring significant penalties in workload and incurring simulator sickness. The impact of this research is that it facilitates future flight training solutions using this augmentation technique to meet budgetary and mobility requirements. This enables deployment of simulators in large numbers to deliver expanded mission rehearsal previously unattainable within this class of low-fidelity simulators, and with no restrictions for transfer to other training media.

Reflections of SelfAthey, Melissa 17 May 2012 (has links)
I vacillate between all extremes, beauty vs. ugly, internal vs. external, micro vs. macro. It is these disparate notions that inspire what I make. We cannot ever see ourselves objectively, but does that mean we shouldn’t try? This thesis is my attempt to dissect what I created in my 2 years at Virginia Commonwealth University, my exploration of the illness within and the psychological nature of how we go about hiding our insecurities.

Material welfare of families with children Abstract This thesis deals with material welfare of families with children from its history to the present. This subject matter is highly discussed topic nowadays. Thesis focuses on comprehensive presentation of this issue, points on some problems in practice and proposes recommended alternations "de lege ferenda". Solidarity was noticed in Neolitic age, in antient Greece and Rome already. In the Middle Ages we can mention mutuality. Security system as we know has been formed in the modern history since 1848. International law was reflected in internal legislation during the half of 20th century due to effort of raising social rights level. Social rights are embedded in either primary and secondary law in European law. Social security law unification is not required in European secondary law and method of convergence is applied. Thesis focuses on benefits provided in case of social events, pregnancy and maternity, parenthood, dependent child, insufficient income, sickness and death. Social insurance consists of sickness insurance, health and pension insurance. Benefits provided by sickness insurance are based on insurance principle, concerning sickness benefit, attendance allowance, maternity benefit, compensatory benefit in pregnancy and maternity, paternity...

Religion et maladie dans le récit de fiction de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle / Religion and sickness in the fictional narrative of the second half of the 19th centurySermadiras, Émilie 05 June 2019 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes fictions that, in the second half of the 19th century, illustrate the idea that "sickness is the natural state of a Christian". The elective affinities between religion and pathology interest both realist or naturalistic novelists (such as Émile Zola, the Goncourts, Alphonse Daudet, etc.), whose polemical view aims at demystifying or even medicalizing beliefs, as well as catholic writers (Barbey d’Aurevilly, Léon Bloy, J.-K. Huysmans, Émile Baumann), who emphasize the spiritual meaning of physical afflictions. The parallel between fictions that are all based on the spectacle of a sick believer, but engage contrasting writing styles and currents of thought, shows how much literature crystallises the debate that is going on at the time about Christianism. It also uncovers a point of commonality between writers that critics are used to consider under the restrictive perspective of their opposition. This study aims to highlight the mutual influences that link together several writers who, beyond their differences, base their representation of religious feelings on the same pathological imaginary and the same poetics of incarnation. We argue that the renewal of religious feelings, whether it's in an apologetical or critical perspective, relies on the description of a body which suffers pain, sickness or mysterious psychophysiological disorders. Ultimately, the body conveys considerations about faith, Christian ideology and beliefs and ecclesiastic institutions.

Previous issue date: 2006-10-25 / This research mainly discusses the psychological aspects in religious Pentecostal cure.
It does not discuss if there is religious cure or not, it concentrates, however, on
investigating the psychological elements present, or which contribute to the execution of
religious Pentecostal cure. It intends to understand in some way the psychological
apparatus and its elements which, starting from religious and psychological symbolism,
turn themselves into participants in this discussion, through jungian vision. It questions
to what point the religious pentecostal cures aren t also psychosomatic cures. To Jung,
the symbol is the psychological mechanism which transforms the energy, and which can
be considered as the individual expression of the archetype. The symbol is the means
that provides the possibility of using the energy flow for some kind of production. Jung
called the energy-transforming symbol the image of the libido , which would be the
presentations that can give an equivalent expression to the libido, canalizing it to a form
different from the original one. The research deals with: health, sickness and sick;
religion, psychology and the efficience of both in the cure. It culminates in the field work
with four case studies of religious pentecostal cure, where the psychological aspects are
studied.
expressão individual do arquétipo.
original.

Examining the Potential Threat of Pesticide and Pathogen Exposure on Wild Bumble Bees: Proposed Lethal and Sublethal Mechanisms Contributing to Pollinator DeclineMobley, Melissa Walsh 26 January 2017 (has links)
Bumble bees and other wild pollinators are crucial to the support of both natural and agricultural ecosystems. However, unprecedented declines of pollinator populations have been observed all over the world, raising concerns of a looming threat to both the human food supply, as well as sustainability of the biodiversity in local ecological niches. Though declines are well described, the cause behind these still evades scientists. Proposed contributors include anthropogenic-mediated environmental stress, including application of xenobiotics for pest control, and increase of pathogen diversity and abundance due to the shipment of infection human-managed colonies. This research examined these theories and attempted to quantify the threats they may pose. Through development of a chronic, oral toxicity experiment, susceptibility of all Bombus impatiens castes to clothianidin exposure was examined. This exposed a substantial increase in vulnerability of male bumble bees to realistic concentrations of neonicotinoid pesticides, highlighting the crucial need to examine all members of wild bumble bee life cycles before determining pesticide regulations. Additionally, sublethal effects on fitness-related foraging behaviors in Bombus impatiens were examined through development of a voluntary task switching assay. The results of this experiment suggest humoral immune stimulation, through pathogenic infection, leads to significant impairment of cognitive flexibility. Taken together, this data suggests that pesticides and pathogens are capable of causing severe detrimental effects, both lethally and sublethally, in wild bumble bees. I hope this data will eventually contribute to reassessment of environmental regulations and establishment of effective conservation strategies in order to sustain the critical populations of wild bumble bees.

Estudo da ação do flavonoide hiperosídeo nos modelos de comportamento de doente e do tipo depressivo induzidos pela exposição à natação forçada combinada a administração deLPS em camundongos / Effect of the flavonoid hyperoside on sickness and depressive-like behaviors induced by forced swimming exposure associated with LPS administration in miceSakamoto, Satchie January 2015 (has links)
O tratamento terapêutico HYP preveniu o desenvolvimento do comportamento do tipo deprimido apenas no grupo SAL. / The neuroinflammation has been studied through acute, central or peripheral administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in rodents. LPS alters the animal immune response increasing the cytokines and others inflammatory chemokines levels. These alterations generate a group of symptoms and behavioral changes known as sickness behavior, which tends to be extinct 24 h after LPS administration when the animals develop a depressive-like behavior. Hyperoside (HYP) is a glycosylated flavonoid that present antidepressant, cytoprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in rodents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the HYP effects on sickness and depressive-like behaviors induced by LPS administration in mice as well as to investigate its effect on hippocampal cytokines (IL-6, TNF, IFN-γ, IL-12 e IL-10) and chemokine MCP-1 levels. The model consisted of a 5 min forced swimming session (stressor stimuli) with posterior LPS (600 μg/kg, i.p.) or saline (10 ml/kg, i.p., SAL) administration. The sickness behavior was assessed in the open field test by measuring the number of crossings and by scoring symptoms, 06 and 24 h after LPS administration. The depressive-like behavior was evaluated by measuring the immobility time in the tail suspension test (TST) 24 h after LPS administration. The treatments imipramine (IMI, 20 mg/kg), HYP (20 mg/kg) or saline 10 mL/kg (treatment control group) were administered (i.p.) 30 min before (prophylactic protocol) or 5 h and 30 min after (therapeutic protocol) LPS or saline (SAL - experiment control) administration. The cytokines levels were measured by flow cytometry in animals euthanized by decapitation 1 h after TST. The prophylactic administration of HYP increased all cytokines in both LPS and SAL groups, and resulted in an IL-6/IL-10 and a TNF/IL-10 positive correlation in both SAL and LPS animals. The therapeutic administration of HYP increased IL-10 levels, with an IL-6/IL10 positive correlation in SAL group only. In LPS animal group, the therapeutic 14 administration of HYP increased the MCP-1 levels and resulted in a TNF/IL-10 positive correlation. The prophylactic HYP did not prevent the reduction on spontaneous locomotion induced by LPS but decreased the symptoms score in LPS group and the depressive-like behavior in both LPS and SAL groups. The therapeutic HYP did not revert the sickness behavior and prevented the depressive-like behavior only in SAL group. The prophylactic IMI decreased IL-6 and TNF without any correlation between cytokines levels in animals that received LPS. In SAL animals, the prophylactic administration of IMI did not alter the cytokines levels but resulted in an IL-6/IL-10 and TNF/IL-10 positive correlations. The therapeutic IMI did not alter any cytokine levels, but resulted in a positive TNF/IL-10 correlation. The prophylactic IMI prevented both sickness and depressive-like behavior in LPS and SAL groups. The therapeutic IMI did not revert any LPS impairment. In conclusion, this study confirmed the antidepressant–like effect of hyperoside in mice and demonstrated that prophylactic treatment with this flavonoid partially protect the animals against sickness and depressive-like behaviors induced by LPS combined with forced swimming stress. Ability of HYP to increase the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 hippocampal levels may underlies its effects on this model.

Faktorer kring korttidssjukfrånvaron på Ekgårdens äldreboendeMejman, Viktor January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate factors concerning high levels of short term sick leave (absence day 1-14) at the old people’s home of Ekgården in Vingåker. Methods used include statistics revision, interviews with three managers and questionnaire among employees (n=26). The group of employees consists almost exclusively of women with relatively low salaries and low level of educational attainment, which, according to previous research, coincide with high levels of sickness absence. The study shows that the group of employees during the last couple of years has had to endure quite a few reorganizations and changes in management. They also experience some shortages in their physical work environment like heavy lifting, physical demanding work and poor air ventilation and in their psychosocial work environment with high demands and low self control. These factors might be contributing to high levels of short term sick leave.</p>

Salvage and de novo synthesis of nucleotides in Trypanosoma brucei and mammalian cellsFijolek, Artur January 2008 (has links)
All living cells are dependent on nucleic acids for their survival. The genetic information stored in DNA is translated into functional proteins via a messenger molecule, the ribonucleic acid (RNA). Since DNA and RNA can be considered as polymers of nucleotides (NTPs), balanced pools of NTPs are crucial to nucleic acid synthesis and repair. The de novo reduction of ribonucleoside diphosphates (NDPs) to deoxyribonucleoside diphosphates (dNDPs), the precursors for DNA synthesis, is catalyzed by the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase (RNR). In cycling cells the dominant form of mammalian RNR consists of two proteins called R1 and R2. A proteasome-mediated degradation completely deprives postmitotic cells of R2 protein. The nonproliferating cells use instead a p53 inducible small RNR subunit, called p53R2 to synthesize dNTPs for mitochondrial DNA replication and DNA repair. To address the ongoing controversy regarding the localization and subsequently function and regulation of RNR subunits, the subcellular localization of all the mammalian RNR subunits during the cell cycle and after DNA damage was followed as a part of this thesis. Irrespective of the employed methodology, only a cytosolic localization could be observed leading to a conclusion that the dNTPs are synthesized in the cytosol and transported into the nucleus or mitochondria for DNA synthesis and repair. Thus, our data do not support the suggestion that nuclear translocation is a new additional mechanism regulating ribonucleotide reduction in mammalian cells. In an attempt to find a cure for African sleeping sickness, a lethal disease caused by a human pathogen, Trypanosoma brucei, nucleotide metabolism of the parasite was studied. The trypanosomes exhibit strikingly low CTP pools compared with mammalian cells and they also lack salvage of cytidine/cytosine making the parasite CTP synthetase a potential target for treatment of the disease. Following expression, purification and kinetic studies of the recombinant T. brucei CTP synthetase it was found that the enzyme has a higher Km value for UTP than the mammalian CTP synthetase. In combination with a lower UTP pool the high Km may account for the low CTP pool in trypanosomes. The activity of the trypanosome CTP synthetase was irreversibly inhibited by the glutamine analog acivicin, a drug extensively tested as an antitumor agent. Daily injections of acivicin to trypanosome-infected mice were sufficient to suppress the parasite infections. The drug was shown to be trypanocidal when added to cultured bloodstream T. brucei for four days at 1 uM concentration. Therefore, acivicin may qualify as a drug with “desirable” properties, i.e. cure within 7 days, according to the current Target Product Profiles of WHO and DNDi. Trypanosomes lack de novo purine biosynthesis and are therefore dependent on exogenous purines such as adenosine that is taken up from the blood by high-affinity transporters. We found that besides the cleavage-dependent pathway, where adenosine is converted to adenine by inosine-adenosine-guanosine-nucleoside hydrolase, T. brucei can also salvage adenosine by adenosine kinase (AK). The efficient adenosine transport combined with a high-affinity AK yields a strong salvage system in T. brucei, but on the other hand makes the parasites highly sensitive to adenosine analogs such as adenine arabinoside (Ara-A). The cleavage-resistant Ara-A was shown to be readily taken up by the parasites and phosphorylated by the TbAK-dependent pathway, inhibiting trypanosome proliferation and survival by incorporation into nucleic acids and by affecting nucleotide levels in the parasite.
