Thucydides’ Sparta: Law, Piety, and the Regime

Hadley, Travis Stuart 08 1900 (has links)
My dissertation investigates Thucydides’ presentation of Sparta. By viewing the war through Sparta, one is confronted with debates on the moral dimensions of war. Sparta decries the imperialism of Athens as unjust and while the Athenians imply that such claims are merely Spartan ‘hypocrisy’ and therefore that Sparta does not truly take justice seriously, my study contends that the Spartan concern with justice and piety is genuine. While the Athenians present a sophisticated and enlightened view of what they believe guides all political actions (a view most scholars treat as Thucydides’ own) my study argues that Sparta raises problems for key arguments of the ‘Athenian thesis.’ Through a closer study of Thucydides’ Sparta, including his neglected Book 5, I locate details of both Sparta’s prosecution of the war and their regime that must be considered before agreeing with the apparent sobriety and clear-sightedness of the Athenians, thus leading the reader into the heart of Thucydides’ view of morality in both foreign affairs and domestic politics. A portion of this research is currently being prepared as an article-length study on the broad and important issue of hypocrisy in foreign affairs among states.

As fontes greco-romanas no pensamento político-pedagógico de Rousseau / The Greco-Roman sources in the politicalpedagogical thought of Rousseau

Giopato, Natália Ferrarini 10 September 2018 (has links)
The objective of this work is to investigate the classical references as fundamental parameters in the development of Rousseau\'s theory, and how the author analyzed the modern societies based in these sources, orienting himself in the elaboration of his social criticism. The innumerable mentions to the Greco-Roman antiquity, in his studies, testify a particular connection and appropriation to this themes and it shows an appreciation by the ideal of citizenship that characterize the Spartans and Romans. In view of this, it is proposed to understand the place of Education to understand the relevance of these classic parameters to the constitution of Rousseau\'s theory, specifically, the archetype of citizenship. In the Rousseau\'s model cities, all the ambience fostered the formation of the citizen: it was not a specific proposal of education, here or there, but a political architecture from which children and young people were engendered in the bosom of their homeland to become citizens in and for the life in community. From this reasoning, it is intended to rescue a significant part of Rousseau\'s thought, based on the Greco-Roman legacy, more specifically, about classical Sparta and republican Rome, as resources to enter the political-educational foundations of these societies and to understand the impact of this legacy in the constitution of Rousseau\'s philosophy and pedagogy, associated to the ideas of national identity and civic virtue. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the adhesion of the studious to these historical examples, verifying if, in fact, there is a primordial foundation of the political-formative scope of his model cities from which the author would be based.

Žurnalo "Lietuvos matematikos rinkinys" duomenų bazės sukūrimas ir realizavimas / Journal „lietuvos matematikos rinkinys" database creation and realization

Ruseckas, Evaldas 08 September 2009 (has links)
The title of thesis: Journal „Lietuvos Matematikos Rinkinys“ database creation and realization. Main goals of work were to formulate purposes and researches for a master‘s work, to prepare pure base, to make and to prove experimental jobs. During my work I analyzed all possible literature, read some internet forums, where I find out that mostly attention is pointed to overall speed. Videlicet commonly developers want to achieve, that their internet pages could reach final destination as quickly as possible. So the main accent of the master‘s work was to reach maximum speed with least resources. Researches were made on these objects: database, programming, communication with database. The most important object of researches was database and internet site http://www.mii.lt/lmrj, which I created in my bachelor‘s work. I find out that often occurs such situations, when in theory exists few solutions for one problem. But only in practice I got some answers, and now I know, which variant is the best. I decided to stay on mostly fittable possibilities for the research object. And in final version performance increased around three times.

Discourse and representation about the ritual practices of spartiates and their basileis in Lacedaemon, in the Fifth Century B.C.

The history of Sparta sometimes was presented in Athenocentric perspective, which considered Sparta as a rustic society, with static economy and culture, leaning only military activities. However, our research has shown that policies and cultural practices of the citizens of Sparta were dynamic for his time. Following in this way, we find that the representations of Sparta, especially the spartiates and its basileis, ranged according to the historical and social context. Thus, we observe that although the citizens of Sparta were criticized by some ancient thinkers, this wasnt a hegemonic tendency. Upon the evidence of Classical literary documentation, we note that the spartiates and their basileis were men endowed with a traditional habitus, which valued the physical and mental improvement, but also the responsibility to the sacred duties. Through interaction between documentary traces and historiographical studies we charted part of Sparta that figured the discourses throughout the history of the West, in order to materialize the possible political and cultural motivations in the appropriations of Spartans habitus. Therefore, we refer to literary documentation to understand as part of classical thinkers conceived the formation of Lacedaemon region and the polis of Sparta, which would have given concomitantly with the cultural and political legitimation of ethnic identity of the basileus and the spartiates. Finally, we analyze the rituals practices in honor of the god Apollo as a mechanism employed to ratify the political power of hegemonic social segments of Lacedaemon against the subjected social groups.

J.C. / The defense of Messinia and Laconia from the seventh to second century BC.

Guintrand, Matthieu 09 May 2017 (has links)
This study aims to provide an inventory of knowledge about fortifications and and the development of defensive policies in the southern Peloponnese, from the mid-6th to the mid-2nd century BC. It is composed of a catalog of Fortifications known in this region (volume II) and a synthesis (volume I) of the development of fortifications and the defense of the cities.
