Avaliação do potencial de expansão de agregados siderúrgicos através da Difratometria de Raios X e Método de Rietveld / Evaluation of potential for expansion of steel slag aggregates through X-ray diffractometry and Rietveld Method

Matheus Martini 27 February 2015 (has links)
BOF slag is a byproduct originated from the hot metal refining to steel and its subsequent types of secondary metallurgy processes, being generated, on average, an amount about 120 kg/t of steel. Similar to blast furnace slag which is used as raw material for the manufacturing of cement, BOF slag, after treatment (so-called of steel slag aggregates), has many applications such as: concrete components, marine docks, effluent treatment, ballast, road and highways base, correction of soil, among others. However, BOF slag is composed by chemical products (such as free CaO and MgO, Fe0, FeO and mCaO.nSiO2) which suffer expansive reactions when exposed to the atmosphere, causing expansion and disintegration of the materials where it is applied. Therefore, it is required some temporary storage for curing or aging to minimize the volumetric instability that is evaluated trough the potential of expansion. Depending on the volumetric expansion results, steel slag aggregates may be approved or disapproved according to a specified limit that will allow to be used or not. The most common methods to evaluate the expansion of BOF slags are the PTM-130/78, JIS A 5015/92 and ASTM D4792:2013. In Brazil, PTM-130 test is currently the most used by the department of highways. This method spends 14 days to obtain the result that generally shows few details about the behavior. Thus, the present study has the purpose of correlating the traditional method of evaluation with the one of X-ray diffraction in powders associated to the Rietveld Method. Another goal is to understand the influence of different compounds on expansion.

Air pollution control measures implemented by the South African iron and steel industries

Ramalope, Deborah 02 April 2014 (has links)
M.Sc. (Environmental Management) / With the rapid expansion of the industries in South Africa, environmental problems including air pollution have been increasing. Among industries that cause air pollution is the iron and steel industry. Air pollution impacts negatively on the environment and therefore the measures implemented to improve air quality by this industry were investigated. The purpose of this thesis was to critically analyse the air pollution control measures implemented by the iron and steel industry in South Africa and to find out what they are doing to address the problem of air pollution, as well as their processes in involving and encouraging community involvement with regard to environmental issues. The key findings from this study were that the South African iron and steel companies are doing their best in trying to control the problem of air pollution. Some of them do not only rely on the South African legislation, they also do self-regulation by monitoring and controlling the air pollution problems even if not strictly required to by legislation. The iron and steel industry does also involve communities, through participation in public environmental forums. Air pollution has always been an issue in South Africa, but due to a lack of enabling legislation in the country, many people were not aware of their environmental rights. Now that the South African Constitution highlights the rights of people to an environment that is not harmful to their health or wellbeing, people are becoming more aware and have started taking the issue of air pollution in a very serious light. With the new environmental legislation including the National Environmental Management Act 108 of 1009 and the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Bill (Draft 1, April 2003), most of the issues relating to air pollution will be dealt with in a better and more enforceable way.

La sidérurgie ancienne dans la province du Bam (Burkina Faso) : approches archéologique, archéométrique et ethno historique / The former steel industry in the provinces of Bam (Burkina Faso) : archaelogical, archaeometric and ethno historical approaches

Birba, Noaga 24 November 2016 (has links)
Burkina Faso, like other African countries, experienced a primary iron metallurgy millennia ago. In the current researches, the earliest date is around the eighth century BC, in the Bwamu at Douroula, in western Burkina Faso. In almost all regions of the country, vestiges relating to the former iron production are visible and are now tangible witnesses of knowledge and the ability of ancient metallurgists. Bam province, our study area is located in the region of north-central Burkina Faso and covers an area of 3931 km2. Our archaeological surveys have enabled to identify more than a hundred sites and remains resulting directly from the steel production. Ethno historical, archaeological and archaeometric investigations of these remains have elucidated the origins of the steel industry in this part of Burkina Faso and permitted to characterize the technical traditions that were used by the ancient metallurgists. Thus, five technical traditions have been identified and described (B1, B2, B3, B4, B5). They have been developed at different times. Besides the technical aspects, socio-cultural and economic implications caused by the local iron industry were apprehended to better understand the place occupied by the iron artisans in the traditional society of Bam province

Återvinning av industriell restvärme som värdeskapande process : En fallstudie på SSAB EMEA i Borlänge / Industrial Waste Heat Recovery as a Value Creation Process : A Case Study of SSAB EMEA in Borlänge

Björnsdotter, Anna January 2012 (has links)
The industrial sector accounts for a large share of greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce its negative impact on the environment is crucial in the quest for a sustainable future. In discussions of the industrial sector's impact on the environment guidelines have been highlighted as a tool to assist the industries in their efforts to change the relationship between the consumption of energy and production. This by improving energy efficiency and a shift to the best available technology. During the past 30 years the steel industry has reduced its energy consumption per ton of steel produced by 50 percent. However, due to this dramatic improvement in energy efficiency, it is estimated there is now only room for a marginal further improvement on the basis of existing technology. More innovative solutions are therefore required to further improve energy efficiency and achieve a more sustainable use of resources. In a description of the program Efficiency of Energy Use in Industry – Research and Development undertaken by the Swedish Energy Agency the interaction between industry and society is accentuated as an important factor in energy efficiency efforts. Today, there are already several examples of where the industry and the community work together to achieve a better utilization of resources. The steel industry SSAB EMEA has a manufacturing plant in Borlänge, Sweden, where they have been recycling waste heat from the industrial processes for a long period of time. In 1991 SSAB initiated collaboration with the local energy company regarding recovery of waste heat within the industrial enterprise. Since then, SSAB has contributed to the heating of the residences that are connected to the local district heating network. The present study aims to examine the values that the utilization of waste heat add to the industrial company and the community, and to explore how the use of industrial waste heat can be developed ahead. The examination consists of a case study and is mainly based on qualitative interviews with people from SSAB, the local energy company Borlänge Energi, Borlänge Municipality and the Swedish Energy Agency. Some quantitative data, such as measurements of heat deliveries, have also been used for the analysis. In addition a literature review with a focus on district heating in Sweden, industrial waste heat and instruments in energy and climate policy has been conducted. Through varied system levels the waste heat collaboration in Borlänge has been analyzed from a business, social and sustainable perspective. The result of the case study proves that the waste heat collaboration has added value in all perspectives. Business values that have been identified are reduced purchases of oil, compensation for delivered waste heat, exchange from vapour to in-house district heating within the steel factory site, reduced emissions of carbon dioxide, media attention and an improved brand and that the waste heat collaboration possibly made SSAB a more desirable employer. The use of industrial waste heat for district heating in Borlänge has also generated a range of social benefits, which consist of low operating costs for heat, low price of district heating, good energy mix and better air quality and less acidity. From a sustainability perspective, the waste heat utilization resulted in reduced emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants and has been contributive to a sustainable use of raw materials and energy resources. The results also demonstrate that there are both opportunities and threats to a continued use of industrial waste heat. The opportunities identified are regional district heating networks, which can improve the conditions for effective use of waste heat, district cooling, which may increase the need for waste heat in the summer and in-house electricity production, which can accommodate some of the steel company's electricity need. A few threats to a continued use of waste heat have also been identified, which the first consists of co-generation and waste incineration, which can adversely affect energy companies incentives to enter into and renew agreements on waste heat deliveries since the companies do not want to be afflicted with reduced revenues from sales of electricity and electricity certificates or from the reception of waste. Furthermore has changes in energy policy been identified as a threat since for example a new tax on waste heat could worsen the conditions for both continuing and new waste heat collaborations.

Everybody's Business? : A Qualitative Assessment of Safety Culture at SSAB EMEA

Bram, Staffan January 2012 (has links)
Many modern-day industries share features of tight coupling and high complexity, making it difficult to describe incidents in terms of direct attribution. This situation has been answered by novel theories on the bonds between people and their environment. Cognitive Systems Engineering (CSE) offers a new way of analysing human activities, acknowledging the impact of complex interaction and unpredictability. Doing so allows for innovative ways of pursuing work safety. In this study, the concept of safety culture has been interpreted from a CSE perspective and applied in a qualitative assessment of current safety work of at SSAB EMEA. A total number of 26 SSAB employees were interviewed, probing attitudes, perceptions and safety system structures at the Oxelösund steel mill, rolling mill and upper organizational layers. Additional data was collected using informers, SSAB documentation and participatory observation. Data was processed using a combination of top-down and bottom-up analytical approaches, creating a qualitative assessment of safety culture from salient themes. Results reveal an advanced state of safety management. However, management’s intentions are inhibited by issues in management presence and communication, management training, worker influence, forms and content of operator training, reporting, feedback, flow of communication and safety-related core assumptions. Revisiting lessons learned within the field of CSE, suggestions are made to possible areas of improvement and future research. These suggestions concern employee involvement in safety work, work identities, forms of training, manager roles and communication.
