The act of reading mobilizes, for the different tones of writing, the gaze of the one who does it and allows it to appropriate the idea of others, of the created universe, of the common vision, of beauty, or even of aesthetic deformation, among many other dispositions existing in the relation reader / object. This, it is resignified; that, reinvents itself, from the established "touch". Who, or what would have encouraged, nourished this relationship; under what conditions it develops; still, if the set of characteristics of a generation was a determining factor for closer ties with the literary creature also permeate the construct of this researcher doing. However, the present work focused more on the attempt to map common identity traits among the subjects studied: readers of serial literature, members of communities created around these literary volumes. The proposal is to describe and analyze the construct of the identity of this new reader from the social apparatus that surrounds him and which he points out as a determinant for his redefinition of the frontier, between what is presented to him as good and official literature and what he named as the which now responds to their perspectives. The study of this identity is individual, although we can not move away from the group consciousness that exists and is one of the factors of cohesion in the communities of readers. For that, a group was invited to participate in the research: Camp Half Blood (CHB), of fans of the saga Percy Jackson, one of the collections of Rick Riordan. Of the twenty-seven questionnaires selected for this study, sixteen were filled out by members of this community. Two other groups, the Community of Readers of the State School Professor Francisco Ivo Cavalcanti (CLFIC) and Tributes and Divergent (T & D), contributed to this scientific work, respectively, of CLFIC, four questionnaires answered and T & D, five questionnaires. It is intended to expose this mapping, in the light of Bakhtin's (2011, 2015) theories that considered language as a constant process of interaction mediated by dialogue. The concept of centripetal and centrifugal forces, also of the author, came together with the perception of the Bakhtinian, concrete, voiced statement. Are still in the field of applied linguistics, in this research, the study of modern "decentered or fragmented" identities of Hall (2005), "historically constituted, not biologically" and Canclini's (2006) vision of the The act of "taking off" and contemporaneity as a historical construction marked by the processes of hybridization. Such theoretical-methodological orientations allow the reader communities to be understood as constructed spaces, according to the desires / knowledge / experiences of their participants, which assure them a reading path in the absence of what is socially valued as "good literature".

Models of men : the construction and problematization of masculinities in the Íslendingasögur

Evans, Gareth Lloyd January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines masculinities in the Íslendingasögur. It attempts to uncover the dominant model of masculinity that operates in the sagas, outlines how masculinities and masculine characters function within these texts, and investigates the means by which the sagas, and saga characters, may subvert masculine dominance. The thesis applies to men and masculinities in saga literature the same scrutiny traditionally used to study women and femininities. The first - introductory - chapter reviews the limited scholarship that presently exists on masculinities in Old Norse literature. It then proposes a new model for the critical study of saga masculinities, drawing on sociological theories of hegemonic and subordinated masculinities. The second chapter ranges across the entire Íslendingasaga corpus in order to demonstrate how masculinity inflects homosocial relationships (and thus virtually all aspects of saga texts). It also suggests that almost all masculine characters have a problematic relationship with masculinity as a result of the intersectional nature of subject formation. The third chapter, focusing on Njáls saga, argues that the male body is used to undermine the prevailing model of masculinity. It is argued that the Njála author purposefully deploys somatic indices that have gendered significance to show embodied resistance to the demands of masculinity. The fourth chapter examines the representation and treatment of a character (Grettir Ásmundarson) that embodies masculinity to an exceptional degree, but who nevertheless - or perhaps for that reason - experiences a problematic relationship with masculinity. Finally, an epilogue briefly investigates some of the ways in which female characters may undermine and problematize the masculinity of men and the category of masculinity itself. Ultimately, this thesis shows that masculinity is not simply glorified in the sagas, but is represented as being both inherently fragile and a burden to all characters, masculine and non-masculine alike.

Dvornost a ženy ve skandinávské rytířské epice / Courtesy and Women in the Scandinavian Knightly Epic

Ivánková, Markéta January 2018 (has links)
Courtesy and Women in the Scandinavian Knightly Epic Abstract The aim of this dissertation was synchronic and diachronic evaluation of gender roles in Scandinavian courtly epic from its beginning in the 13th century until the end of the 15th century. Its different conceptions of women, love, and courtesy were chosen as criteria, which make the main specifics of continental courtly fashion apparent - of the fashion which these translations were meant to introduce into Scandinavia. Besides literary analyses of gender norms, we have considered texts of pragmatic nature and even selected artefacts of material culture. Our focus, therefore, included a broader social, cultural, and political context of this literature and social norms and literary conventions of other contemporary literary genres in Scandinavia. Our work is based not only on primary sources and findings of literary history, but also on interdisciplinary research. Our analyses demonstrate the destabilisation and redefinition of gender boundaries in Old Norse literature, which was caused by translations of knightly epic, where the male hero was allowed so far unparalleled degree of sensitivity and feminine openness of emotions. Prior to these translations, honour and status of any man, who would humbly beseech his beloved like the heroes of...

Marcelo Marco, Victoria Lidón 21 March 2016 (has links)
[EN] ABSTRACT The establishment in Ribesalbes of the Earthenware Factory of Joseph Ferrer, in 1780, has a tradition of pottery which is credited in this PhD thesis, certifying the presence of ceramist artisans in Ribesalbes, at the beginning of the 18th century. Also it is determined the names of some potters registered at the dawn of the 19th century from different primary documentary sources, which include the parish archives of Ribesalbes sacramental books, the Contribución General de 1817 and the Padrón general de 1843; and the relationship of workers linked to the factories of earthenware and the professional structure of the population of Ribesalbes, in 1817. In addition, the two industrial areas par excellence of Ribesalbes: la Ollería and la Llometa are accredited, since the beginning of the 19th century. Settling the concrete location of the Earthenware Factory of Joseph Ferrer, and the name of some of their workers as well. On the other hand, the factories and varnish mills in the Barony during the first half of the 19th century are related; identifying owners and their workers, as well as their locations in Ribesalbes boundary. Recomposing the genealogy of pottery manufacturers, the major ceramic Ribesalbes sagas are gathered and articulated; establishing family ties existing between some of them. Especially among the lineages of Ferrer Almiñana, Garcés Benages and Figas Osed. The research concludes with the cataloging of the ceramic legacy of Dr. Francesc Esteve, deposited in the Museum of Fine Arts in Castellón. Cataloging from which analysis of the formal type, the colour palette, marks and inscriptions, the artistic style and the main decorative themes of Ribesalbes ceramics from the first half of the 19th century are set. Weaponizing Ordinary Objects: Women, Masculine Performance, and the Anxieties of Men in Medieval Iceland

Dunn, Steven T. 22 March 2019 (has links)
This thesis unravels the deeper meanings attributed to ordinary objects, such as clothing and food, in thirteenth-century Icelandic literature and legal records. I argue that women weaponized these ordinary objects to circumvent their social and legal disadvantages by performing acts that medieval Icelandic society deemed masculine. By comparing various literary sources, however, I show that medieval Icelandic society gradually redefined and questioned the acceptability of that behavior, especially during the thirteenth-century. This is particularly evident in the late thirteenth-century Njal’s Saga, wherein a woman named Hallgerd has been villainized for stealing cheese from a troublesome neighbor. If Hallgerd were a man, this behavior would have been considered rán, which was a masculine act whereby men challenged one another to take things by force. As a woman, however, Hallgerd’s clever use of ordinary objects was unsettling to men; her act, although mirroring the masculine expectations of rán, has been condemned by the author. Thus, by emphasizing the anxieties of men regarding such behavior, it is evident that later male authors, particularly those writing from the late thirteenth century onwards, considered this behavior as preventing society’s progression away from extra-legal conflict resolution. In doing so, the author of Njal’s Saga demonstrated that both women and men were aware of the power that these ordinary objects had in the hands of ambitious women, as well as how potentially dangerous and harmful to society they could be.

The Nordic Odyssey : Homer’s Epic Poetry and the Norse Sagas: A comparative analysis supported by digital text analysis

Herskind, Martin January 2022 (has links)
This thesis compares Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad with the Norse Sagas, the Young and Elder Edda. More specifically, it analyses, whether the Odyssey and Iliad should indeed derive from the Norse Sagas, which is a claim brought forth by Felice Vinci. Throughout the thesis, passages, sentences and words from both the Greek and Norse texts have been singled out through the process of text analysis tools from Python and Orange3. Similar passages or words from both texts were filtered out by building a program that would print sentences with given key words. These were then analysed and studied, in order to compare the texts to each other and for the most part, to see if the Greek texts should indeed have derived from the Nordic texts. Finally, no proof has been found that the Norse Sagas should have predated the Greek Myths. However, this was a very interesting theory, that I am glad to have examined.

Sagas and Secularity: The (Re)Construction of Secular Literature in 20th-century Iceland

Hreinsson, Haraldur 23 August 2022 (has links)
The study of secularity in Iceland has so far largely been restricted to institutional differentiation, alongside legal aspects of the relationship between the state and the country’s national church. This paper approaches the formation of secularity in the country from a different angle. Adopting a research perspective shaped by both cultural history and sociology of culture, it investigates the role of the Icelandic sagas, and the medieval culture which spawned them, in the development of secularity in Iceland. Instead of looking at the processes through which Christian religion came to be separated from other spheres of society, it probes the discourses legitimising such a separation. It pays special attention to the reception and understanding of the sagas and the medieval culture which produced them, and further asks how they provided a background against which a secular culture could be imagined, both in the past and for the present.
