The identification and analysis of Social Work actions towards the reduction of school dropout at the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo are the main themes of this research. The quests about the contribution of Social Work to the reduction of dropout have lead to two hypotheses: The first, that the actions towards the school dropout have been consolidated as the leading role of Social Work at IFSP. The second, that the strategies towards the school dropout are directly related to the Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil. Thus, the object of this research was the study of the process of proposition and implementation of actions and strategies against school dropout at the 27 IFSP campuses, as a PNAES objective, by Social Work through the perspective of providing the right of education and contributing to the construction of a democratic and participatory educational space. In this sense, analyzing the strategies that were proposed and implemented has constituted the general objective of the research. Documental, bibliographic and empirical research have been carried out. It was possible to identify the main historical elements of IFSP and of Professional and Technological Education. Theoretical references belonging to Social Work and Education, as the right to education, participatory democracy and broaden citizenship were constructed. Desk research was necessary to identify the reasons for school dropout at IFSP. The main reasons for school dropout were: work, learning disabilities, and lack of interest in the course. The empirical research was composed by semi-structured interviews with six social workers that work at IFSP. The results show that the contributions of the social workers to the permanence of students at IFSP, focus on straightening the bonds with the students and building critical thinking. Even being done in a punctual way and without proper systematization, the school dropout and students permanence at IFSP involve all professional actions, that are grounded on the concepts of effectiveness of the right to education, of participatory democracy and broaden citizenship / A presente dissertação tem como tema a prática do Serviço Social na Educação.

Silva, Argemiro Severiano da 19 February 2014 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Argemiro Severiano da silva.pdf: 1574564 bytes, checksum: e69c730b64a2a696b026371ffda44e2d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-19 / According to the 1988 Federal Constitution of Brazil, education is a right of all and a duty of the State and the family and should be accomplished in collaboration with the society in order to promote the full development of the person, their capacity to exercise the citizenship and their participation for work. With the rampant growth of private higher educational institutions, the main focus became the financial and administrative management, but almost nothing was done to revamp the teaching-learning management by applying an outdated methodology that does not meet the needs of the students. Moreover, the educational institutions did not have and plenty of them still do not have adequate infrastructure and preparation to meet those needs, resulting in an increase in the number of school dropouts. It was only in 2010 that some educational institutions become concerned with dropout rates (or retention) of their students , developing policies to improve the quality of their services and seeking to retain their students up to gain the bachelor´s degree . The objective of this work is to verify the high-lighted aspects that stand in relation to retention and to verify the policies established by the State and the educational institutions focused on access and retention of students in higher education. The methodology used in this study was a literature search through books, articles and the Internet, both from Brazil sites and from the American literature on the matter, among others. It was also used the knowledge acquired by the author of this study in the analysis and monitoring of cases of higher education dropouts. In this work, we can conclude that there are numerous factors that can be responsible for dropout: such as financial problems, low quality education, teaching methodologies considered to have poor quality and uninteresting besides the poor and deficient educational structure of middle school; educational institutions not concerned with analyzing these factors and seek to redirect the students choices who do not adapt themselves to the course previously chosen. As to the policies of access and retention of students in higher education, some measures have been taken by the State which has achieved some success in this direction. Others are also being applied by the educational institutions, however, it is still possible to see that there is still much to be done in order to reduce dropout rates in higher education.

The Effects of Transitional Challenges on Ninth Grade School Dropouts

Jones, Merlene Leona 01 January 2017 (has links)
The high dropout rate of the United States Virgin Islands school district's ninth-grade students is a major educational problem and the catalyst for a myriad of social problems. Ninth grade academies and extended school day intervention programs have benefited only the academically prepared students. This qualitative case study examined educators' perceptions of the challenges that led to the increased dropout rate of the district's ninth-grade students. Bandura's self-efficacy theory and Atkinson's motivational achievement theory formed the foundational pillars for this study. The research questions were focused on challenges that led to the increased dropout rate of ninth-grade students and the programs implemented to support dropout prevention. The data collection methods consisted of questionnaires from 4 administrators, 4 counselors, and 16 core-subject teachers, and semi-structured group interviews with 2 administrators, 2 counselors, and 8 core subject teachers. Analysis of the data included coding and the identification of common themes. The findings showed that poor school attendance, academic unpreparedness, and disciplinary infractions were some of the challenges that resulted in premature school dropout. Interpretation of the data confirmed that the implementation of proactive and reactive approaches, modified instructional methods, and intervention strategies have proven ineffective. After 10 years, the ninth grade academies of the school district have had no significant effect on promotion or retention rates. The introduction of Ninth Grade Completion via Career Curriculum Academies, a combination of college preparatory and vocational skills classes, may transform education for ninth-graders, increase promotional rates, and benefit the larger community.

General Education Diploma Students' Familial Attachment Experiences Influencing Premature High School Departure

Wright-Stone, Tonya Suzanne 01 January 2015 (has links)
Lowered academic achievement and premature departure from high school continue to plague the educational system, creating the need for greater insight into experiences affecting students' classroom performance. Much is known about academic achievement; however, less research has focused on the role of familial attachment on premature departure from high school. Guided by attachment theory, the purpose of this interpretative phenomenological study was to gain insight into General Education Diploma (GED) students' familial attachment experiences influencing premature departure from high school. The research questions focused on GED students' primary caregiver and educational experiences. Participants (n = 14) consisted of current or previous GED students 18-30 years of age. Data were gathered from semistructured interviews and a Life Map used to capture expression of feelings through symbols. Interview transcriptions were hand-coded by bracketing words and phrases for composite textual descriptions. Data interpretations were bolstered by committee member checking and participants' review of extracted data. Findings revealed a close connection between the types of attachment formed with primary caregivers and early departure from high school, but participants were more strongly influenced by external influences such as relationship conflicts, health crises, domestic violence, abuse, loss, and paternal abandonment. This study offers insight to educators, counselors, and those within the criminal justice system on these students' emotional and mental needs.

Immigrant and Minority Student Visual Narratives of High School Dropout in Atlanta

Modaresi, Anahita 06 August 2007 (has links)
This thesis is about the Reading and Writing for Filmmaking Afterschool program, an extracurricular focus group centered around engaging urban immigrant and minority working-class high school students in a discussion about high school dropout using participatory video as a methodological tool. The program was created under the assumption that, (1) within 'free spaces' students who are encouraged to express themselves and explore their social realities through innovative methods will reveal their understanding of high school dropout and the factors contributing to it, and (2) the way these students conceptualize and talk about high school dropout is significant to understanding this phenomenon. Through participatory video, observation, interviews, and storyboard narratives, I examine the discourse of minority and immigrant students as a means of understanding their cultural assumptions and observations of school dropout. As a result, this paper illuminates the issue of immigrant educational retention and attrition in an urban public school setting.

The Impact of the Samantha Academy of Creative Education (SACE) on Students Placed At-Risk at a Suburban High School in Southwest Texas

Valdez, Patrick J. 16 January 2010 (has links)
Reducing student dropout is of extreme importance to the United States. The loss in revenue as well as in human terms is huge. Several problems exist concerning students placed at-risk for dropping out. These include no agreed upon method of calculating drop out rates, differing opinions on the causes of school dropout, and a body of literature that is sparse concerning educational approaches for keeping students placed at-risk in school. This study examined the impact of the Samantha Academy of Creative Education (SACE) on the students placed at-risk and the teacher perceptions of the SACE program by the teachers working in the program at a suburban high school of Southwest Texas. The population of this mixed-methods study consisted of secondary general education students from a large suburban high school in Southwest Texas who had been placed at-risk. One of these groups consisted of students that participated in the SACE program while the other group consisted of a similar group of students not participating in SACE. Statistical tests were conducted to determine if a difference existed between the two groups with regard to graduation rate, attendance rate, and core grade average. Perceptions of the SACE program by the teachers that worked within the SACE program were gathered. Results indicate that student placed at-risk who participated in the SACE program had higher core grade averages, higher rates of graduation, and higher rates of attendance compared to students placed at-risk within the same high school who did not participate in SACE. Teachers perceived that the SACE program was efficacious for students placed at risk because of three broad themes. This study further demonstrated that effective programs aimed at helping students placed at-risk can be developed within the context of a regular high school setting. Recommendations for further research and implications for practice were provided.

The Spanish labor market: temporary employment, immigration and the construction boom

Aparicio Fenoll, Ainhoa 01 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis deals with different aspects of the Spanish Labor Market. The first chapter explores the impact of product market competition on job instability. Empirical results show that job instability rises with competition. The second chapter addresses the existence of network effects on immigrants' remitting behavior. Using a unique data base, I find positive network effects on the probability of remitting as well as on quantity remitted. The final chapter studies the role of the recent construction boom in explaining decisions to drop out of high-school. The construction boom is shown to increase the likelihood of dropping out of high-school.

Given the lack of teachers in the country to work in different areas, we seek to understand the reasons that lead to truancy through the analysis of this problem in undergraduate courses at the State University of West of Paraná Campus Cascavel. For this, we used the following research: questionnaires with open questions applied to escapees from different degree courses of that university; semi-structured interviews with coordinators and ex-coordinators of undergraduate analyzed; analysis of the existence of records pertaining to truancy in Political Pedagogical Project (PPP) of undergraduate courses. We found that most of the motivations for the courses studied truancy were linked to the issue of work and the implications of this for the academic life. A significant portion of the sample of dropouts and ex-coordinators and coordinators of the courses when asked about what measures could be taken to minimize dropout rates in the country mentioned factors directly related to institutional issues. As a way to overcome the problem of truancy and some of the difficulties pointed out by escapees, we emphasize the importance of offering student assistance in college.
