The dissemination of the Chicago school of architecture in the Midwest

Szufnar, Elizabeth A. January 1999 (has links)
The tall office building is a uniquely American invention, designed to meet the demands of industry and commerce. The technical and architectural achievements of the Chicago school of architecture marked the beginning of a new style of architecture for commercial buildings. The creative vitality that was so prevalent in Chicago was felt throughout the Midwest. Chicago style structures in a selected number of Midwestern cities are examined in the context of this thesis and these structures are promoted as historically significant to their locales and as a body of work in general. The purpose of this thesis is to document these structures and to discern the possible reasons for the dissemination of the Chicago school of architecture in the Midwest. / Department of Architecture

The Forgotten Light / Det bortglömda Ljuset

Tomic, Sonja January 2015 (has links)
On river Danube in Belgrade, Serbia, abandoned coal power plant Power and Light and the surrounding historical industrial zone have been laying in shadows for decades, waiting to be reconnected to the city life.  This project deals with the revitalization of the old power plant giving it a new function – a school of architecture. As the use for which the building was build is so vastly different from the function of a school, one of the main points dealt with in the proposal is reconciling the existing structure and the new program. This challenge is addressed through working with the building, rather than against is - recognizing existing spatial qualities and seeing how they can be utilized in the new program.  Alongside developing the program for the building itself, the project gives a schematic proposal for future development of the industrial zone as a campus for the city’s growing university.

Um novo ensino para outra prática: Rural Studio e Canteiro Experimental, contribuições para o ensino de arquitetura no Brasil / A new school for another practice, Rural Studio and Experimental Job Site: contributions to architectural education in Brazil

Lotufo, Tomaz Amaral 21 March 2014 (has links)
This dissertation deals with issues of practical experimentation in the process of teaching-learning courses in architecture and urbanism. With the prospect of contributing to the teaching of architecture in Brazil, two realities were selected for analysis: the University of São Paulo, in Brazil , focusing on the disciplines of FAUUSP where the is the development of the pedagogical space at the Experimental Job Site; and the United States, in poor communities in Alabama, based on the method of work of the Rural Studio, of the Auburn University. Experimental Job Site of FAU is a teaching equipment and methodology developed in the last fifteen years within the construction practices curricular activities of students. The Rural Studio is a pedagogical project formed by students and teachers, with methodology of a laboratory for teaching and extension, which develops with the benefiting community projects and then constructs houses and collective spaces for poor settlements of the southern United States. The paper analyzes the influence of these educational processes in the formation of an architect with professional practice directed to the currently underserved population, considering the fundamental importance of education in promoting social change. Therefore, the research will focus at first on the relationship of the development of housing movements, of public housing policies in Brazil and the theories of the group \"New Architecture\" with initiatives arising in the Schools of Architecture as the Housing Laboratories and Experimental Job Site. Then examines the Experimental Job Site of FAU, trying to understand how this space of construction practices can be extended to activities within communities. To finally make an analysis of the American group and understand the possible contributions that can be incorporated to the Brazilian reality. By rescuing innovative experiences, this project aims to contribute to a necessary renewal of architectural education in Brazil, bringing the theory of constructive practice and the University of the community.

CRP was-is-will be here : sustaining an academic service-learning approach to planning instruction / CRP was is will be here / Community and Regional Planning was-is-will be here

Tirpak, Mark Andrew 25 October 2012 (has links)
The Community and Regional Planning program of the University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture (UTSOA-CRP) has made course-integrated community-based project work (CCPW) a key - if not a requisite, component of its classroom-based teaching and planning instruction. Often referred to as academic service-learning, the pedagogy of incorporating community-based project work with classroom instruction is recognized to have significant benefits for college students, faculty members, institutions, and communities. More specifically, this teaching approach is understood to have substantial advantages in planning instruction. This professional report attempts to offer recommendations towards addressing the question of how a CCPW, or academic service-learning, approach to planning instruction can best be sustained and/or enhanced by the UTSOA-CRP program. Ideally, this report will add to the growing body of literature and research related to academic service-learning in planning instruction, while offering the CRP program useful tools and resources to consider in program design, implementation, evaluation, and planning. / text

Elementární architektura / Galerie a muzeum architektury při FA VUT v Brně / Primary Architecture / Gallery and Museum of Architecture at FA BUT

Hertelová, Viola January 2021 (has links)
The topic I have chosen for my diploma thesis is the curation of architecture as a possible overlap of teaching architecture towards the general public, but also a tool for connecting academic and municipal institutions. In my work I will examine the possibilities of creating an architecture center within the Faculty of Architecture, BUT. Galleries and museums of architecture, and thus various other associations and groups dealing with architecture, often function as separate institutions. I decided to solve the creation of a similar center, which as such has been missing in the Czech environment for many years, through its placement in academia. In my work I will first focus on the theoretical study of the possibilities of presentation and representation of architecture together with new approaches in the field of exhibition and curation of architecture. Subsequently, I will deal with the possibilities of connecting the activities of the Center of Architecture and the Faculty of Architecture. The aim of the work will be a practical design of the center within the BUT campus, for which I chose a space near Veveří Street in Brno, also known as Academic Square. For me to design the center, it will be important for me to analyze the place and find possibilities for its new concept. Today, the space of the Academic Square is in a state of disrepair and is waiting for an important gesture that can unite the place. Can it be the center of architecture?

After the Architects

Hambraeus Victorson, Mattias January 2015 (has links)
Developed from a desire to explore alternative ways of addressing aspects of architecture, the project After the Architects tells the story of the KTH School of Architecture building through the eyes of me - one of its many users. The project consists of a film, an exhibition and a hand book with mental excercises. Investigating the tools we have at hands as architects in the context of storytelling as a mean of communication, I wanted to dissect the many layers of interpretation and experiences a building consists of. It is often said that the core of a building is what it does and how it does this. Since buildings, rooms and spaces are experienced differently by everyone, I think the active use of subjectivity is the best way of approaching this theme. The KTH School of Architecture building has been my second home for five years. It has hosted architecture education since 1970, but after the summer of 2015, it is entering a new phase as the school is moving to a new building. Therefore, as a student leaving the building, I’m using my subjectivity as a tool for investigating the relationship between the course of time, the school building, and myself.  Which effects and stories has it staged over the years and how has the building affected me, on an intellectual-, as well as on a personal level? Some of the themes I’ve been working with are; the aspects of time, memories and nostalgia, the different roles of a building, spaces as references, and the interplay between perspective, interpretation and meaning.
