Electronic Preprint Distribution: a Case Study of Physicists and Chemists at the University of Maryland

Wertman, Ellen R. 27 April 1999 (has links)
As use of the Internet for scholarly communication increases, many scientists from several disciplines including Astronomy, Mathematics, and Physics are using electronic networks to distribute preprints. The innovation of electronic preprint archives on the web, specifically those set up by Paul Ginsparg at Los Alamos, where scientists can submit manuscripts and access papers before the formal peer review process, has gained the attention of scholarly scientific publishers and researchers around the world. This case study of twelve physicists and chemists at the University of Maryland reveals divergent attitudes and behaviors about preliminary electronic dissemination of research. Several hypotheses including economic considerations, historical and technical patterns of work, social and structural factors, community norms, and the attitudes of scientific publishers, are investigated to explore the social aspects of this phenomenon called e-print archives. Preliminary findings suggest that theoreticians in particle physics and condensed matter physics are the most active users of the e-print archives. While graduate students and post-doctoral researchers are called on to navigate the technical difficulties of electronically submitting papers, it is the older more established scientists who promote usage. The influential attitudes of editors and publishers of scientific journals also contribute to understanding current practices and attitudes about the e-print archives. / Master of Science

FASCS: A Family Approach for Developing Scientific Computing Software

Yu, Wen 01 1900 (has links)
Scientific Computing (SC) software has had considerable success in achieving improvements in the quality factors of accuracy, precision and efficiency. However other software quality factors, such as reusability, maintainability, reliability and usability are often neglected. This thesis proposes a new methodology, Family Approach for developing Scientific Computing Software (FASCS), to improve the overall quality of SC software. In particular, the aim is to benefit the development of professional end user developed SC programs. FASCS is the first methodology to apply a family approach to develop SC software, where all stages in both the domain engineering phase and the application engineering phase are included. In addition, the challenges for SC software and the characteristics of professional end user developers are also considered. A proof of concept program family, FFEMP, which can solve elasticity problems in solid mechanics using the Finite Element Method (FEM), is developed to illustrate how the proposed methodology can be used. Part of FASCS is a new methodology for systematically eliciting, analyzing and documenting common and variable requirements for a program family. The methodology is termed Goal Oriented Commonality Analysis (GOCA). GOCA proposes two layers of modeling, including the theoretical model and the computational model, to resolve the conflict between the continuous mathematical models that represent the underlying theories of SC problems and the discrete nature of a computer. In addition, the theoretical model and computational model are developed to be abstract and documented separately to improve reusability. Explicitly defined and documented terminology for models and requirements are included in GOCA, which helps avoid ambiguity, which is a potential source of reduced reliability. The traceability of current and future changes is used to potentially improve reusability and maintainability. FASCS includes a Family Member Development Environment (FMDE) for the automatic generation of family members. FMDE is apparently the first complete environment that facilitates automatically generating variable code and test cases for SC program families. The variable code for a specific member of the program family can be automatically generated from a list of variabilities written in a Domain Specific Language (DSL), which is considerably easier than manually writing code for the family member. Some benchmark test cases for the program family can also be automatically generated. Since both family members and test cases can be automatically generated, testing the program family can be performed on the same computational domain with different computational variabilities. This provides partially independent implementations for which test results can be compared to detect potential flaws. This capability partly addresses the unknown solution challenge for SC software. Documentation is also an important part of FASCS. Five new templates for documenting requirements and design are proposed. Traceability matrices, which provide relations between artifacts (and documents) in the different stages of the process, can facilitate understanding of the programs. The matrices can also improve reusability and maintainability by helping trace changes. Nonfunctional requirements, especially nonfunctional variable requirements, are rarely considered in the development of program families. To the knowledge of the author, nonfunctional variable requirements have never been considered in the development of SC program families. Since some nonfunctional requirements are important for SC software, FASCS proposes using some decision making techniques, such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process, to rank nonfunctional variable requirements and select appropriate components to fulfill the requirements. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Lesotho high school learners' understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry in relation to classroom experiences.

Lematla, Lieketseng Justinah 09 February 2012 (has links)
This study investigates learners‟ understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI) in relation to their classroom experiences. Using the constructs of nature of scientific inquiry; inquiry-based teaching and learning; and principles of scientific inquiry as theoretical lenses, the study empirically explored learners‟ (n = 120) understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry which were captured through a questionnaire called Learners‟ understanding of science and scientific inquiry (LUSSI) and interviews and their perceptions of classroom inquiry (their experiences of inquiry were elicited through a questionnaire called Principles of scientific inquiry- student (PSI-S) and interviews). The participants were one hundred and twenty learners, 60 from each of two schools in an Education District in Lesotho. Eight learners, four from each school participated in the interviews. At the centre, the investigation sought to understand whether there was any relationship between learners‟ perceptions of their experiences of scientific inquiry and their understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry. As a result, this study was guided by the following questions: what are learners‟ understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry? What are learners‟ perceptions of their experiences of scientific inquiry? Are learners‟ understandings of NOSI in any way related to their experiences of scientific inquiry? Typological approach was used to analyse the qualitative data and descriptive statistics for analysing the quantitative data. The results of this study suggest that learners hold less informed understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry and that learners are experiencing closed-inquiry in their science classroom. The results also show that other learners‟ experiences of scientific inquiry are not related to their understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry. It was recommended that teachers should engage learners in inquiry activities rather than always carrying out teacher-demonstrations. It is also recommended that further studies should be done in Lesotho to examine the relationship between learners‟ understandings of NOSI and their perceptions of their classroom experiences.

"Uso de periódicos científicos eletrônicos por docentes e pós-graduandos do Instituto de Geociências da USP" / "Use of electronic scientific journals by professors and pupils from the course of graduation at the Instituto de Geociências at the USP."

Oliveira, Erica Beatriz Pinto Moreschi de 08 November 2006 (has links)
In the past years, scientific communication has been through changes generated by information technologies and communication, specially Internet and its graphical interface, the Web. The scientific journal, as a main formal means of communication, has not been immune to those changes, expressed through its availability whithin the electronic field. In this context, this research analyzes the periodic acceptance and use of electronic scientific journals by professors and pupils from the course of graduation at the Instituto de Geociências at the University of São Paulo, and has as objective to identify the use, the perception of positive and negative points and the possibility of the library being a facilitator/intermediator of this process. 178 questionnaires had been sent, with 79,8% return rate (142 questionnaires). The results indicate that the professors and gradutation students have a routine of using the electronic journal in their activities of education and research, although printed culture is still strongly present. The biggest difficulty observed was in the identification and selection of the more adjusted informational resources, which to a series of possibilities for the role of the library, as much in the spreading of the resources as in the orientation of the users. It is considered that, although journals are used as routine, questions such as preservation and information filling, guarantee of access throughout the time, development of trustworthy interfaces and availability of retrospective collections need to be defined and to be decided for the acceptance of electronic scientific journal.

Arquivologia e a construção do seu objeto científico: concepções, trajetórias, contextualizações

Schmidt, Clarissa Moreira dos Santos 10 December 2012 (has links)
At first developed and based on a Fazer (to make) which was documented and diffused by manuals in the end of the XIX century in Europe, the archival science is not restricted only to a practical eminent area and requires principles that guides the procedures of this Fazer; fundamental in theoretical terms. Since it is an area of new knowledge and still under a process of elaboration and development, it requires a permanent review of its assumptions aiming to establish its statute as science. The aim of this work is to present reflections about the scientific object of archival science with views to the proposition that there are different definitions within its scientific community or even its scientific field; and to investigate the configuration and consequences of these differences in the Brazilian scientific field. In order to support the research process a literature review about the scientific object was conducted to discuss and contextualize its design towards the construction of historical-epistemological aspects of the archival science. An empirical research outline was necessary to identify the meanings of the object in the Brazilian scientific field thorough interviews with researches of the area.
