Sionnière, David 06 1900 (has links)
Our purpose in this study is to focus on the specific phenomenon of screenplay reading in Quebec institutional context. We’ll analyze a corpus of one hundred seventy two screenplay reading reports for feature fiction films, written between 1972 and 2004. There is, to our knowledge, no specific study on reading reports texts. At first, we’ll situate function and place of the scenario in Quebec fiction film production history, between acceptance and rejection. Then, we will look at how scenarios are read: by whom, how, under what conditions and with what objectives. Finally, using a grounded theory analysis, we will determine, based on the commentaries founded in the reading reports texts, five entities from which the reader settled his judgment: the screenwriter, the screenplay, the reader himself, the film forthcoming and the expected viewer we’ll call fictitious viewer. We’ll conclude that the screenplay reader is a mediator between a text and its author on one hand, and a forthcoming movie with his fictitious viewer on the other hand. This mediation is the convergence center of different expectations, those of the readers, authors, producers and institutions.

Vidas secas, do livro ao filme: estudo sobre o processo de adaptação / Barren lives, from book to film: study on the adaptation process

Bomfim, Julio Cesar Borges 02 May 2011 (has links)
O que pretendemos com esta dissertação é, valendo-se de diversos embasamentos teóricos ligados aos Estudos Comparados e à Literatura Comparada, chegar a uma leitura analítica focada na compreensão da construção das duas formas narrativas de Vidas secas: romance (livro / narrativa original / linguagem literária) e filme (produto final de uma releitura audiovisual / linguagem cinematográfica / The dissertation Barren Lives, from book to film aims to comparatively study the structure and the issue of narration in Graciliano Ramoss book Vidas secas and in Nelson Pereira dos Santos film Vidas secas, taking into consideration the differences between literature and film, the patterns created by the process of adaptation, the circumstances within which the two works were produced and the temporal lap between the two pieces. Adapting a book into film is, in our opinion, much more a matter of admiration and dialogue than of establishing differences between one piece of work and the other. More than an adaptation of one of the Brazilian contemporary literatures masterpieces into film, the cinematic reading of Vidas secas made by Nelson Pereira dos Santos also aimed to intervene in its contemporary Brazilian political life, especially in the debate concerning the land ownership and the Brazilian social structure in the 1960s. In this dissertation, our aim is to build up an analytical reading of these two works, based on some concepts from Comparative Studies and Comparative Literature, trying to better understand the two pieces different structures, the books original literary narrative and the films cinematic narrative, considering the latter a result of an audiovisual comprehension and re-creation of the first.

Lonely Monsters

Davis, Patricia 01 January 2015 (has links)
Lonely Monsters is a full-length feature screenplay that explores the ways in which a classic damsel narrative may be reconsidered. It offers ideas on how death and girlhood may find symmetry. The characters within Lonely Monsters deal with loss, identity of the self versus the world's ideas on self-identity, place, gender, and class. Utilizing the elements of a fairy tale, the narrative seeks to complicate the roles of gender in a cautionary tale. Set in the fictional Florida town of Puerto Palmera, an economic divide between the Estates and the Glades makes for a ripe, troublesome environment for a foul modern-day aristocrat who masquerades as a grandiose and romantic prince. The story's protagonist, Fisher Franklin, loses two key relationships—as well as her sound mind—in the wake of the false prince's folly. Utilizing her experiences as a child within the lavish lives of the Estates—at the desire of a wealthy and secretive benefactor with motives of her own—Fisher creates a persona who becomes entangled in a lustful and dangerous liaison with Wyatt Sharpe, the villainous playboy. By assuming this persona, Fisher recasts herself as the damsel, the monster, and the heroine.

Goulet, Rachel 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis, presented as a research-creation project, is devoted to the study of screenplays resulting from the movement of the Renewal of Quebec cinema in the early 2000s, as well as to the representation of poetry from French literature in the cinema of contemporary Quebec authors. It is about making links between the use of literary texts in Quebec authored cinema and the new interpretations they suggest. In short, how does poetry in contemporary Quebec cinema echo the social issues of the Renewal, and how does this manifest itself in the writing of a screenplay? My research project is devoted on the one hand to the analysis of a predefined corpus from Quebec author cinema and to the study of literary expression within the seventh art, as well as its role in the ambivalence of Quebec identity, particularly in the following films: La face cachée de la lune (Robert Lepage, 2004), À l’Ouest de Pluton (Myriam Verreault, 2008), J’ai tué ma mère (Xavier Dolan, 2009), Les amours imaginaires (Xavier Dolan, 2010), Nuit #1 (Anne Émond, 2011), Laurentie (Mathieu Denis and Simon Lavoie, 2011), and Laurence Anyways (Dolan, 2012). I rely on the studies of researchers Christian Poirier (Le cinéma québécois : À la recherche d’une identité?, 2004), Michel Chion (L’écrit au cinéma, 2013), ans Isabelle Raynauld (Lire et écrire un scénario, 2019). On the other hand, this dissertation is devoted to writing a screenplay based on my research, titled À l’ombre des supernovae, inspired by the collection of poems L'outre-vie by Marie Uguay.

Filmmaking: a new pedagogical method to explore students' view of nature of science

Kottova, Alena 23 September 2015 (has links)
This dissertation examines the nature, scope, and significance of a new pedagogical approach to teaching of views on nature of science (VNOS) to high school students. Educational approaches based on teaching ‘correct’ VNOS continue to be dominated by the epistemology of logical empiricism and, as I will point out, these approaches are inadequate to address the issues of VNOS. I assert and the findings presented in this dissertation offer evidence that students’ VNOS are dynamic and context-based. In this research I used filmmaking to explore students’ VNOS. High school students, supported by a professional filmmaking crew, completed a short film entitled, The Shadows of Hope; this film explores the use of scientific knowledge in understanding everyday life problems. The filmmaking environment introduced simultaneously a number of contexts in which students’ VNOS were concurrently collected using mixed methods methodology. The results show that contexts sway students’ VNOS and generate a variety of the VNOS for each student. Evidence shows that there is a common, theme-based pattern to individual students’ set of VNOS. The variety of expressed VNOS seemed natural to the students, with no registered discomfort. However, in this study a contrast between students’ VNOS and their ‘school-based’ understanding of science also became apparent. This is evidence that cognitive dissonance is not sufficient to explain the full spectrum of ways in which students learn, deepen knowledge and arrive to conceptual change. I assert that including cognitive contextual expansion in our understanding of conceptual change is essential to provide a framework that allows to integrate cognitive diversity into the theory of learning, reflecting a perhaps more natural way human mind works. The project’s findings offer evidence that students’ VNOS deepened and expanded through filmmaking; students arrived to a more examined and mature VNOS while enjoying the activity of making a film. There is evidence that cooperation with a professional team provided students with a feeling of respect and pride. Filmmaking offers a robust way of learning, based on collaborative work that enlivens a large number of learning-enhancing activities. Additional resources and a Brief Guide For Teachers are added to this text to support teachers in adopting filmmaking as a unique pedagogical method. / Graduate / 0714 / 0900 / 0533 / akottova@uvic.ca
