Olofsson, Alexander January 2012 (has links)
This study has the objectiv to examine the reporting of the events in Oslo and Utöya. To do this I ́ve choosen the timespan during 23th of july to 30th the same month. I ́m going to analyse chossen articels from swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter,As my method of analysing the results I ́m going to work with oualitative content analysis, and concentrate on hermeneutics. From the analyse I found three stand outs themes that will be discussed in later chapters in the paper. The theories I ́ve applied to the method is media logic, newsworthy and news dramaturgy, to give the method and my results a better standing ground to reach relevant results.Lastly I ́m going to apply a short story, wich will be presented as an annex to this paper. The short story will be analysing the same subject, but in a different light. In the story we will follow a working journalist when the attacks in Norway takes part. Subjects like ethics in journalism, what ́s right and wrong to publish and the human behind the words, will be discussed and analysed. Combined with the qualitative content analysis, this paper will reach results that can relevant for discussions of print media, journalism, ethics and the way newspapers report a crisis.

Fearing the youth: economic turmoil, adult anxiety and the Japanese Battle Royale controversy

Unknown Date (has links)
In December 2000, Japanese lawmakers took unprecedented steps to ban Fukasaku Kinji's Battle Royale from theaters prior to its scheduled release. The film was deemed "crude and tasteless" for its portrayal of teen violence in a state run game of kill or be-killed and attempts to ban the film were pursued through the film certification process all the way to the floor of Japanese parliament. This thesis investigates the controversy surrounding the release of Battle Royale and the socioeconomic and cultural factors - in particular, the Japanese recession and widening generation gap of the 1990s - that influenced both the film's message and the extraordinary political reaction in Japan. This thesis argues that the objections to the film were not based solely on the violent content as is often reported, but rather were the combination of adult economic and cultural anxiety regarding themselves and the youth, the anti-authority message of the film that encouraged the youth to reject adult systems, and a political campaign that exploited the adult fears by using Battle Royale as a scapegoat for youth problems. / by Caren Pagel. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. “Please don’t show me on Agataliiko Nfuufu or my husband will beat me like engalabi (long drum)”: young women and tabloid television in Kampala, Uganda / Please don't show me on Agataliko Nfuufu or my husband will beat me like engalabi (long drum)

Nakacwa, Susan January 2014 (has links)
The “tabloid TV” news genre is a relatively new phenomenon in Uganda and Africa. The genre has been criticised for depoliticising the public by causing cynicism, and lowering the standards of rational public discourse. Despite the criticisms, the genre has been recognised for bringing ‘the private’ into a public space and one of the major ‘private’ issues on the public agenda is women and gender equality. Given these critiques, this study set out to interrogate the meanings that young working class women in Kampala make of the tabloid television news programme Agataliiko Nfuufu and to ask how these meanings relate to the contested notions of femininity in this urban space. In undertaking this audience reception study I interviewed young women between the ages of 18-35 years by means of individual in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The study establishes that Agataliiko Nfuufu is consumed in a complex environment where contesting notions of traditionalism and modernity are at play. The study also establishes that while mediating the problems, discomforts and contestations of these young women’s lives, Bukedde TV1 operates within a specific social context and gendered environment where Agataliiko Nfuufu is consumed. The study concludes that the bulletin mediates the young women’s negotiations and contestations, but it provides them with a window into other people’s lives and affords them opportunities to compare, judge and appreciate their own. Furthermore, the gendered roles and expectations in this context have become naturalised and have achieved a taken-for-grantedness. Therefore, patriarchy has been legitimised and naturalised to the extent that the respondents define themselves largely in relation to male relatives, and marriage. While the women lament the changes that have taken place in their social contexts which disrupt the natural gender order, they construct themselves as subjects of the prevailing discourses of gender relations that see men as powerful and women as weak and in need of protection.

The research carried out is justified because, according to the socio-cognitive aspect of Critical Discourse Analysis, the power of the media constructs texts that propitiate the mastery of the minds of its readers and so it is necessary to verify how the textual-discursive construction of the news facts for denounce what has been happening with the readers. It is understood that the great strategy used by journalists is to build the news by scandal and sensationalism. This thesis argues that according to the newspaper company's ideology some social issues are transformed into semantic areas for the anchoring of different news strategically elaborated by the scandal in order to attract the readers. 10 news articles, 07 news reports and the respective developments were published between 2012 and 2016 in Folha de S.Paulo (FSP) and O Estado de São Paulo (OESP) and Veja and IstoÉ magazines. The general objective is to contribute to the discursive studies of the construction of the scandal by the journalistic media and the specific ones: 1. To verify which strategy was used in the journalistic discourse to transform a news event into a scandal, producing sensationalism; 2. To examine how the repercussion of the scandal occurs in the construction of other texts of different discourses; 3. To reassess what social issues, at the time of the research, were transformed into semantic areas of the news for the anchoring of the meta-event building. The results indicate that: 1. The newspapers have an objective towards the readers through the sensational news that is to cause an emotional reaction; 2. The repercussion of the scandal in the construction of other texts occurs by capturing and subversion in transforming the licit act into illicit; 3. Some social issues transformed into semantic areas of news are anchored in the meta-event of impunity. It is concluded that the scandals are constructed sensationalist and exploited by the media due to the value of the news, that is, because it sells more newspaper and thus has more readers / Esta tese está situada na área da Análise Critica do Discurso e Semiótica Social, e tem por tema a construção textual-discursiva do escândalo em textos de notícias, reportagens e charges de mídia impressa e em redes sociais.

Bad news: do reminders of mortality influence support for authoritarian attitudes and social policies?

Tysiaczny, Chris E. 22 July 2014 (has links)
Terror management theory predicts that when people are reminded of their own mortality (mortality salience), they cling more strongly to cultural worldviews which provide them with a sense of security (Greenberg et al., 1986). For some people, this reaction to mortality salience also involves derogation of, and discrimination against, “other” people and cultures. An increasing tendency towards sensationalism in the news media has resulted in even more frequent reminders of vulnerability and death (e.g., terrorism, violent crime, health and safety concerns). In two experiments involving 868 introductory psychology students, the present research examined the extent to which their (a) support for authoritarian social policies relevant to Canada and (b) authoritarian attitudes in general are influenced by mortality salience. Specifically, right-wing authoritarianism, attachment security, and political orientation were measured in participants in both experiments. Participants were then prompted to think about either their own mortality or about another aversive experience having nothing to do with mortality. Next, participants were asked their opinions regarding authoritarian social policies (Experiment 1) and beliefs indicative of right-wing authoritarianism (Experiment 2). Multiple regression, analysis of variance, and t-tests revealed that individuals with (a) high pre-existing right-wing authoritarian attitudes and (b) conservative political beliefs increased their support for authoritarian social policies following mortality salience (Experiment 1). In contrast, individuals with (a) high attachment security and (b) moderate political beliefs decreased their support for right-wing authoritarian beliefs following mortality salience (Experiment 2), although the former relationship only approached statistical significance. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the news media, for social policies and political opinions, and for social justice.
