Of Atlases and False ProjectionsBrown, Marisa January 2005 (has links)
Thesis advisor: George O'Har / In these three longer short stories I explore the theme of "sense of place," of the geographic and psychological confusion of the world and the people in and on it. The first piece, "Cartography," is the story of a woman who, despite living in a large and vibrant city, struggles to find herself within it. The second piece, "The Birds," is the story of a man, Adam, who searches to define himself against the earth and attempts to reject his own embodiment, ultimately failing, but in doing so finds something else. The third piece, "Men Shall Know Nothing of This" (also the title of a Max Ernst painting) is a brief history of a city — and how it continues even when it appears to be dying — past its industrial prime, told through the interactions of four characters with the main road. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2005. / Submitted to: Boston College. Para uma filosofia do acontecimento / For an event philosophyCracel, Maria Luiza Lima Pascale 29 August 2016 (has links)
This work seeks, through the concept of event, resonance between the thinking of two great 20th century philosophers: Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault. The hypothesis proposed is that, despite their distinct perspectives, there is strong complicity in the work of both, which can be seen, for each, at two important times: for Deleuze, in The Logic of Sense (1969), when the philosopher explores ancient stoicism for the concept of event as a philosophical category; for Foucault, in The Order of Discourse (1970), when he claimed that the concept of event as defined by Deleuze would be of great importance in his historical research. The objectives, then, will be: to precisely define the concept of event, attempting to show how it is connected to important philosophical history issues in the Logic of Sense; to seek to demonstrate how, based on this concept, there is a change in Foucault\'s direction, when he proposes a new way of dealing with the concept of discontinuity, as well as a new conception of relations between discourse and practice; and finally, to bring together elements to consider, through the contributions of Deleuze and Foucault, what an event philosophy might be.

Nos (ciber)espaços de leitura: sentidos e sujeitos em trânsito / In the (cyber)spaces of reading: senses and subjects in transitFerrarezi, Ludmila 08 May 2014 (has links)
Beginning with the theoretical-analytical foundation of the French Discourse Analysis we reflect on the reading, the Internet, the subject and the production of meaning through a more critical and fruitful manner that does not take just the technical aspects related to the archives materiality into account, but its political- ideological dimension. We tried to analyze the production and circulation of meanings in discursive archives about reading that are materialized in blogs, social networks and others dedicated to the reading practices, particularly in community spaces in and out of Internet. We also intend to analyze how language means in its digital materiality, observing the conflicts between different subject-positions and discursive voices intertwined in the corpus that was presented. We also aim to reflect on the ideology as a mechanism for naturalization of the senses and produce evidences about some discourses on reading instead of others, marking what It is possible to be said. In order to achieve these objectives, at first we will discuss about some theoretical issues on the world of archives and networks, from a transdisciplinary theoretical framework involving especially the fields of communication, discourse, sociology and philosophy. Then we will bring some theoretical concepts of Discourse Analysis; from this perspective, in the following section, we will present some statements about the reading and its new configurations in the digital medium, which presents new possibilities of meaning, a new discursive operation observed in the analysis of our corpus, which was organized around three discursive entries, in which the reading has a community trait besides sharing of senses produced for/in reading.

Electroreception in the obligate freshwater stingray, Potamotrygon motoroUnknown Date (has links)
Elasmobranch fishes use electroreception to detect electric fields in the environment, particularly minute bioelectric fields produced by potential prey. A single elasmobranch family (Potamotrygonidae) is composed of obligate freshwater stingrays endemic to the Amazon River. A freshwater existence has imposed morphological adaptions on their electrosensory system due to life in a high impedance medium. Because their electrosensory morphology differs from their marine relatives, freshwater stingrays may demonstrate corresponding differences in behavioral sensitivity. The objective of this study was to quantify behavioral sensitivity of the obligate freshwater stingray Potamotrygon motoro to prey-simulating voltage. The voltage produced by common teleost prey of P. motoro were measured and replicated for behavioral trials. The best response was 10.62 cm, and the smallest voltage gradient detected was 0.005 mVcm-1. This sensitivity is reduced compared to marine species. The conductivity of the medium, more so than ampullary morphology, may dictate sensitivity of the elasmobranch electrosensory system. / by Lindsay L. Trabalhadores da CSN: lembranças e relatos da primeira geração / (Im)possibilities in Fran Kafka\'s literatureDinamarco, Patricia da Silva Mueller 12 August 2004 (has links)
This article aims to review some aspects of the relationship between the work of the writer Franz Kafka (1883-1924) and history. It draws on the idea that this complex relationship can be better understood by examining the construction of sense and its historical deficiencies, rather than through an objective description of social processes. The unique form of literature that results from the expression of these deficiencies combines impossibility and narrative, but that does not hinder the configuration of a specific modality of realism, characterized by the peculiarly harmonious coexistence of transfigured situations and everyday life. The arguments presented here focus mainly on the narrative of A Country Doctor (Ein Landarzt).

Semiótica e construção do sentido no discurso musical: propostas teóricas e aplicações / Semiotics and the construction of meaning in musical discourse: theoretical proposals and applicationsFernandes, Cleyton Vieira 05 June 2012 (has links)
The researcher who opts for the French Semiotics to develop their academic project casts his anchor in the study of the human language and finds the theoretical framework inaugurated by Saussure in the Curso de Linguística Geral (Saussure, 1997). From this theoretical basis, we discuss the relevance of the principles of the Semiotic Theory, also called greimasien, in the analysis of musical discourse. At first, we present a model of aesthetic apprehension of the object based on elements from the work Da Imperfeição, when Greimas discusses the Event Aesthesic. Then, we propose some different ways to discretize and systematize the musical discourse, debating some of the positions among music semioticians. After these steps, we will apply to the parameters of Heights, Simultaneous Intervals and Timbre, some concepts extracted especially from Tensive Semiotics, according to Claude Zilberberg proposals. Finally, by means of the analysis of two important movements in the history of Jazz, Swing and Bebop, we will bring some of the formulations on the concept of Enunciative Scene and its implication in the senses construction of musical discourse.

The Effects of Orders of Presentation and Anchors on the Ratings of Perceived ExertionPeters, Albert L. 05 1900 (has links)
The problem investigated was to compare the effects of orders of presentation and anchors on the ratings of perceived exertion obtained during bicycle ergometry. Based on the statistical analysis of the data, the following findings were apparent: 1. It was found that there were no significant differences in mean scores of perceived exertion obtained among the orders of presentation, ascending, descending, and random. 2. It was found that the light anchor mean score was significantly greater than those of the heavy or identical anchor. 3. It was found that there were significant differences among the ratings of perceived exertion that may be attributed to changes in work loads. 4. It was found that there were significant differences among the mean scores of ratings of perceived exertion that may be attributed to the interaction of the main effects. As a result of the findings, the following conclusions were deemed appropriate within the limitations of the study: 1. Ratings of perceived exertion in ascending and random order increased proportionately in value as the work load increases. 2. Contrast effects are present in ratings of perceived exertion obtained during bicycle ergometry. 3. The majority of previous findings agree with the present research with respect to anchors and orders of presentation. 4. Light anchors and ascending orders of presentation make work appear to be more strenuous than what it actually is. 5. Heavy anchors and descending orders of presentation make work appear to be less strenuous than what it actually is.

Inventing the Basque Block: Heritage Tourism and Identity Politics in Boise, IdahoHill, Gretchen, Hill, Gretchen January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the social, political, and economic underpinnings of creating a place for Basque immigrant descendants by the use of the Basque Block in downtown Boise, Idaho. In the past, unlike other immigrant groups in the United States, Basques lacked the desire to assimilate into the US and remained relatively invisible. Simultaneously, they created subtle ethnic communities and maintained transnational sociospatial ties with Basque Provinces in Europe. Today, these transnational ties are stronger, which has profoundly influenced the creation of the Basque Block. The Basques strive to maintain their heritage landscapes to retain their cultural identity and educate present and future generations about their unique legacy. Furthermore, the local community in Boise has recently marketed their heritage landscapes to attract tourists and bring attention to this "invisible" ethnic group. This thesis explores the challenges and opportunities brought on by the production and commodification of an ethnic heritage site.
