The Performance of Serial Acquirers : Evidence from the Nordic market

Gionis, Mattias, Stugemo, Jesper January 2022 (has links)
This thesis examines the performance of serial acquirers in the Nordic market between 2006-2016. We investigate how serial acquirers perform in the short-term and long-term and if serial acquirers are affected by hubris, or if they learn by experience. The payment method is examined to determine if cash-financed deals outperform equity-financed deals. The short-term performance study is measured by the Cumulative Abnormal Return (CAR) and the long-term performance study is measured by the Calendar-Time Portfolio (CTP) combined with the Fama-French Four-Factor model. The main findings show that serial acquirers underperform relative to single acquirers only in the short term. No significant results are found for the hubris and learning hypotheses. In addition, we find that acquirer size and the deal size have a significant effect on the short-term post-M&A performance.

[pt] A REPRESENTAÇÃO DO JORNALISMO NOS SERIADOS FICCIONAIS: ANÁLISE DE THE NEWSROOM E THE MORNING SHOW / [en] THE REPRESENTATION OF JOURNALISM IN FICTIONAL SERIES: THE NEWSROOM AND THE MORNING SHOW

EDUARDA GOMES VILAR DE MACEDO 13 November 2023 (has links)
[en] The production and consumption of fictional series, especially in the United States, have seen a surge, leading to the emergence of the series culture (SILVA, 2014) and seriaphilia (JOST, 2018). This increase is driven by the complexity of narrative structure (MITTEL, 2006), the current technological context that allows productions to be watched on various platforms and in different settings, and the involvement of specialized groups (MUNGIOLI, 2017). While medical dramas have gained popularity (MEIMARIDIS, 2017), the representation of journalism behind the scenes doesn t receive the same prominence. This paper discusses the portrayal of journalism in the series The Newsroom (2012, Aaron Sorkin) and The Morning Show (2019, Mimi Leder), assessing its realism through theoretical studies and scenes compared with insights from four interviews with professionals. The aim is to understand the construction of journalistic practice in these narratives, taking into account the fundamental role of journalism as a mediator between events that occur in the world and in society.

Serial Order in Language Learning in Bilinguals

Lopez Ricote, Maria de los Angeles January 2020 (has links)
The current thesis has two aims to further the understanding of the cognitive underpinnings that are involved in word-learning and language processing. One aim is to understand how individuals are able to make temporary phonological and serial order representations of new words in language and non-language domains. The second aim is to investigate whether the mechanisms involved in maintaining temporary nonverbal and serial order representations are related to verbal short-term abilities. We created four behavioural tasks to determine the processing of phonological short-term memory information, nonverbal short-term memory information, serial order short-term memory information and rhythmic short-term memory. We used 30 adult Spanish-English bilinguals as the target population to also investigate whether individual language abilities in two spoken languages affect the learning of words in a foreign language with distinct prosody and phonology. The first correlational analysis revealed that performance on a serially ordered verbal short-term memory task that involved a language of unfamiliar prosody and phonology was strongly predicted by performance on two serially ordered verbal short-term memory tasks that involved languages of familiar prosody and phonology. A second correlational analysis showed that tasks that tapped into individuals’ memory for serial order in the verbal, nonverbal and rhythmic domains were weakly associated with one another. In a third correlational analysis, it was shown that individuals’ lexical knowledge of Spanish was not a predictor of their performance on a measure of their serially ordered verbal short-term memory abilities. Multiple linear regression analyses found that none of the tasks that were used to measure individuals’ abilities for processing serial order information in the verbal, nonverbal and rhythmic domain were strong predictors for foreign-word learning. Overall, the results show promising findings for the tasks that tapped into serial order short-term memory for verbal information. However, they also suggest that the nonverbal and rhythm tasks may not be reliable measures of the constructs we were hoping to study. Future work should adjust the tasks to ensure we are properly tapping into individuals’ serial order abilities in the nonverbal and rhythm domains. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

[pt] A REPRESENTAÇÃO DA MEIA-IDADE FEMININA NOS SERIADOS FICCIONAIS: ANÁLISE DE MARE OF EASTTTOWN E AS PEQUENAS COISAS DA VIDA / [en] THE REPRESENTATION OF MIDDLE-AGED WOMEN IN SERIAL NARRATIVES: AN OVERVIEW OF MARE OF EASTTOWN AND TYNE BEAUTIFUL THINGS

MARIANA RITTO KOEHLER 04 April 2024 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to understand some aspects of the representation of middle-aged in serialized fiction, using the series Mare of Easttown from the HBO Max platform and Tiny little things from Star Plus as examples. Imaginaries are constructed in the production, circulation and appropriation of symbols. Hence the relevance of understanding the representation of middle-aged through symbols and characters disseminated in these series. With the women as the narrative s structuring focus, the series constitutes a privileged indicator of a moment of social debate on gender and aging issues, materialized through discourses that articulate the production of meanings aligned with female empowerment and respect for generational and gender plurality.
