In between : a journey of cultural integration

Yoo, Christina H 17 September 2013 (has links)
In Between: A Journey of Cultural Integration is a multimedia art installation that tells the story of a Korean girl’s cultural integration journey. The story was inspired from my personal experience of moving from South Korea to the U.S. In the 12’ x 14’ room, the narrative was delivered by media. The story was introduced by the projected text of a diary on a book in the middle of the room. The images that were projected on all four walls enhanced the narrative. The each viewer was forced to experience the installation alone and experience the loneliness of the journey. The successful collaboration between scenic and media was important for creating a cohesive design for this project. I worked with several projection designers to create the narrative development. Throughout the process, the boundary between scenic design and media design became blurry and I and my collaborators became a creative team as a whole. This project was intended to share my personal story of cultural integration with a broader audience by inviting them to have a different perspective view towards the immigration community in America. It also became my personal challenge to create a space that could tell a story without an actor. / text

Sergio Ricardo Lessa Ortiz 30 September 2013 (has links)
From the empty space to the open circle: towards Peter Brook\'s holy set and costumes design identifies and explains the process of creating theatrical space, the sets and the costumes of Marat-Sade, Midsummer Night Dream, Mahabharata, Who is there and The Tragedy of Hamlet, performed by the great director of the twentieth century. Reflects, documents and identifies the principles that guided the design projects of the visual elements of those plays during their conception, and from the analysis of these documents, points to the evolution of his theatre towards what Brook defines as holy theatre.

Köpsell, Linn January 2013 (has links)
This thesis investigates the communicative role of scenography in the performing arts for children, with an aim to make the readers understand the ways in which a set design can be optimized so that a young audience can be able to interpret the play and its message. The art of scenography is complex and includes many elements. The research questions can therefore be grouped into three clusters: one artistic oriented (How does the scenographic process work and what is its relation to the scenic piece at large? In which ways may scenography be used to support the desiderate interpretation?), one audience oriented (Which work processes enhances the chances of creating dramatic art that is perceived as meaningful to the audience? On what premises can the semiotics of theatre be used in the performing arts for a young audience?) and last a cluster that focuses on Den magiska cirkeln (The Magic Circle) by ung scen/öst (What is told in the show and how is this portrayed in the scenography? Who is in the target group, and does the audience get the feeling of the performance as intended?). Den magiska cirkeln is used as a case study in the thesis in order to reflect the theoretical material. Methods in the case study includes performance analysis, a survey completed by 178 people in the audience and an interview with scenographer Anna Dolata. 14 performing analyzes of Swedish children’s theatre shows have been made in addition to the case study. The thesis analyses and compares two work logics; the internal logic and the external logic, and it is shown that meaningful interpretations are likelier to happen with an external logical point of view. But the result is not unequivocal; a performance without any internal logic is likely to fall flat as the performance needs to be extracted from the creators’ full conviction. As shown in the thesis, scenography can be used to amplify the readings and intents with usage of the semiotics of theatre. It is important not to overlook the great potential of scenography in order to enhance the experience. The thesis also shows that the intentions that ung scen/öst had with Den magiska cirkeln went past many in the audience. Many felt that the show was confusing, and expressed frustration at not having solved the performance’s message. A high level of knowledge about the audience, and a willingness to listen and absorb its opinions, increases the chances of creating meaningful performances. Key words: scenography, stage design, set design, stage art, performing arts, theatre, children’s theatre, theatre semiotics, ung scen/öst / I denna uppsats studeras scenografi inom scenkonst för barn och unga.

Um panorama do traje teatral brasileiro na quadrienal de Praga (1967-2015) / A panorama of Brazilian theatrical costume design at the Prague Quadrennial (1967-2015).

Rocha, Rosane Muniz 14 March 2016 (has links)
There are few opportunities to expose a costume design out of the scene in an exhibition in which to reflect on the work created, their process and scenic proposals, both at home and abroad. The largest international exhibition of performance design happens, during the last 58 years, at the Czech Republic and brought together artists, researchers and students from ninety countries in the last edition in 2015. During the Prague Quadrennial (1967-2015), Brazil has been awarded several times, including with the top prize of the PQ: the Golden Triga, in 1995 and 2011. However, the lack of an institution responsible for organizing the country\'s participation causes instability in curatorial forms, as well as lack of funds. This study investigates how the Brazilian theatrical costume design is represented at the international exhibition. A route that is needed to start with the International Biennial of Visual Arts of Theater (1957-1973), an event created as a frame belonging to the Bienal de São Paulo and, after its fifth edition, would raise the Czech exhibition. An unpublished documentation with extensive documentary and iconographic rescue, makes up this thesis and serves as a fundamental object of study to recognize what position the scenic costume has in this twenty editions\' trajectory, built over 58 years, to enable the research hypothesis of this thesis: confirm that, in the history of Brazilian participation at PQ, between 1987 and 2003 - when the representation of the country was in the care of set designer J. C. Serroni - there was some sort of curatorial preference by artists and / or works that led to the reinforcement of stereotypes of the Brazilian culture, highlighted the aesthetic features of the Carnival.

To develop our investigation, we examined, based in the Discourse Analysis of the French, precisely Dominique Manigueneau postulates (2005;2008), the link between the linguistic, the discursive and social, seeking in enunciation the way to build the set design and to what measure the speaker s ethos shows the political, social, ideological and cultural Brazilian aspects, in a discursive and interdiscursive dimension, exhibited in the protest discourse. In order to achieve the intended goal, we chose like model two lyrics written by Gabriel, o Pensador, considering that the composer produces verbal critical texts and that they contemplate contemporary Brazilian social practices. The discourses study of these song lyrics shows the construction of the enunciator s ethos o, taking into account the social link associated with the speech made about the axis of the political history of Brazil from the 90's, considering the behavior of the order representatives in Brazilian public institutions. Through certain situations illustrated in the lyric discourses, we observed that the speaker s ethos articulates towards the co- enunciator s ethical world and both are configured as participants guarantor in the social ethos of the values citizens, whose principles are based on the posture of honest men who believe in justice, in the ethical sense and human and they are indignant by attitudes of misgovernment in Brazilian public institutions / Este dissertação tem como tema o estudo das representações linguístico-sociais, que propiciam a construção da cenografia e a legitimação do ethos discursivo em letras de músicas produzidas por Gabriel, o Pensador.

The Italian stage expresses a kind of representation grounded in classic patterns which became hegemonic through more than four centuries. As drama‟s plastic fundament, set design mediates text and visuality based on the key-concept of "mimesis" and offers itself to analysis from the perspective of the baroque allegory and the concept of frame as scenic and architectural condition. The concept of "allegory" is the radiating center of the scenographic language in use on Italian stage and its space; and the concept of "dialectical image" concludes his critique. The scenography of Vida and Esta Criança (companhia brasileira de teatro, Curitiba/Brazil, 2010 and 2012) are analyzed from these concepts in the context of history and theory of theater and arts.

Analýza inscenace Ďábelského kruhu / Alfréd Radok and His Stage Practices. Analysis of the Production of Devil's Circle

Petružela, Jan January 2014 (has links)
2 Mgr. Jan Petružela Alfréd Radok and His Stage Practices Analysis of the Production of Devil's Circle Abstract Alfréd Radok (1914- 1976) started his second term at the National Theatre (1954-1960) with two moderate productions, in which he, due to the Stalinist régime, suppressed his creative power. However, the following season Radok came with the production of Devil's Circle (1953), schematic play by Hedda Zinner about the Leipzig trial (1933), in which he found his essential topic - to grasp the Zeitgeist and manifest a universal mechanism of totalitarian power and trumped-up political trials. In this production, staged in the period of mild political "thaw", Radok managed to bring back to the Czech theatre modern stage directing practices and re-established the position of stage director, which was reduced in the previous years by the dogmatic aesthetics of socialistic realism. The production of Devil's Circle (prem. December 21, 1955) at the Estates (then Tyl's) Theatre, warmly received by audience as well as critics, renewed and developed for that time unprecedented, though historically verified principles: imaginative, non-descriptive theatre with a meaningful overlap, strict approach to acting with an emphasis on realistic, civil-like expression, interpretation of dramatic sitution, intense work...

Eduardo de Filippo, de l'écriture interprétée et mise en scène par l'auteur aux libres interprétations de ses oeuvres / Eduardo De Filippo, from the writing interpreted and staged by the playwright to the free interpretations of his works / Eduardo De Filippo, dalla scrittura recitata e messa in scena dall’autore alle libere interpretazioni delle sue opere

Bussi, Célia 19 November 2012 (has links)
Eduardo De Filippo is a Neapolitan man of the theatre who went through the whole of the twentieth century, endowed with mutually enriching skills : he was a playwright, actor and director all rolled into one, he also managed his own company and his own theatre, the San Ferdinando. In that context, directors were impressed, even inhibited by so much involvement, but also by a work of universal impact, always on the borderline between comedy and tragedy. This dissertation aims to investigate the reasons of such fears and endeavours to explore the different ways of facing the Neapolitan master’s plays. The first part is devoted to Eduardo De Filippo, presented as a complete artistic figure : it explains how, as a director, he stood back from his own texts and shows how he used the stage when writing his comedies. Then, the second and the third parts focuse on the choices made by the directors and actors from the middle of the eighties – once the playwright had passed away – , when they started to adapt his texts for the stage. The second part consists in analysing a first interesting approach of Eduardo De Filippo’s comedies : how to interpret the text – that is to say the stage directions and the dialogue – by adopting a personal acting and by rethinking the psychology of the characters as well as stage setting. Our third part highlights the new interpretations of the directors and actors who dare to modify the writing and/or the dramatic art structure of Eduardo De Filippo’s work.
