Modern Sexualupplysning : En analys av hur sexualupplysning konstrueras i Netflix-serien Sex Education.

Le Faucheur, Lina, Göthberg, Josefine January 2024 (has links)
Entertainment media, specifically television, plays a big part in the construction of ideas and thoughts within a society. Television is a form of popular culture which can be used as a source of entertainment but can also promote certain ideologies and values to its audience. Sex Education is a Netflix series released in 2019 with a primary focus on knowledge around sexuality. This study aims to investigate how the Netflix-show Sex Education constructs knowledge around sexuality and how it conveys values and ideologies through this construction of knowledge. The study is different from other studies about the show as it focuses explicitly on the knowledge and conversations around sexuality, not how the knowledge is constructed in sex scenes or through other relations and characterizations in the show. The study specifically interests itself with the conversational and articulated elements of sex education. It is important to study how Sex Education portrays knowledge about sexuality as it reflects values and ideologies within a western society, and can be helpful in exploring the discourse around sex education that prevails within this type of society. This construction will have an effect on the audience which consumes it and will showcase the boundaries which sex education presents and articulates itself within. The discourse within the show sets the grounds for how the topic of sex education is spoken about within their given culture. The study uses a poststructuralist discourse analysis to approach the research and finds similar elements within twelve selected scenes from the show to explore how knowledge about sexuality is constructed in the material. Important factors of the analysis are power, ideology, status and values. These are explored in connection to characters' subject positions and the context in which the factors exist: a fictional exaggerated version of western society. The study finds that the selected scenes create a power struggle between a hegemonic, traditional and progressive discourse around sex education. The suggested discourse in their fictional world is the progressive discourse which includes a positive attitude towards diversity and social aspects of sex education. It also highlights a difference in characters' attitudes depending on their subject positions.

Safe Sex, Unsafe Identities : Intersections of ’Race’, Gender and Sexuality in Swedish HIV/AIDS Policy

Bredström, Anna January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation examines the different depictions of ‘immigrants’ and the ways in which migration, ethnicity and racism have been handled by Swedish HIV/AIDS policy since the early 1980s. The dissertation consists of five separate articles and an introductory chapter that outlines the discourse-theoretical approach used in the subsequent articles. The introduction also provides a contextual framework by summarizing recent research on, and sketching a background to, HIV/AIDS policy development in Sweden. The dissertation argues that, although the policy discourse early on established that inducing safer sex practices among the Swedish population was the only viable solution to the pandemic, the discourse is nonetheless permeated by notions of unsafe identities. The dissertation also stresses the importance of scrutinizing HIV/AIDS policy in light of broader political developments, and argues that an increasing focus on migrants in HIV/AIDS policy should not be seen as a simple reflection of the global epidemiological development, but should rather be understood in relation to the general political and economic phenomenon of welfare state retrenchment. Applying postcolonial feminist theories, the dissertation reveals how the policy discourse is permeated by conceptions of migrant cultures as not susceptible to change but steeped in tradition and primordiality, alongside racialized fantasies about Africa as the ‘dark continent’ and the source of disease. It also discusses how both masculinity and femininity, as well as heterosexuality and homosexuality, feature in the policy discourse as demarcations between Western and non-Western subjects – between whites and blacks and between Swedes and non-Swedes – and identifies the challenges that such knowledge implies for feminist HIV/AIDS research and policy.

“Vi pratar ju aldrig om sexualitet på vår arbetsplats” : - Erfarenheter av att bemöta sexualitet hos personer med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning bland personal inom bostäder med särskild service enligt LSS / "We Never Talk about Sexuality at our Work" : - Caregivers Experiences of Supporting the Sexuality of People with Intellectual Disabilities in Group Homes According to LSS

Matsson, Tova, Aronsson Lindquist, Heléne January 2023 (has links)
Background: Nationally and globally established documents accentuate sexuality as a human right. Although this is the case, people with intellectual disabilities (ID) are shunned regarding their rights to their own sexuality. This precedence leads to caregivers, tasked with supporting intellectually disabled service users, to neglect helping them in this field, giving them less opportunities to express their own sexual identities. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate caregivers experiences when it comes to addressing sexuality in the residential homes of the people with IDs that they support, as well as what competence they deem as necessary to handle such situations. Method: In this qualitative study we have interviewed seven municipally employed, tasked with supporting people with ID within group homes. The empirical data we've collected has been analyzed with the help of a thematic analysis, for which our result has been interpreted while using social constructivist perspectives on sexuality and theories on professional discretion. Results: The study shows that the informants have limited knowledge and lack of skill when it comes to assisting people with ID with their sexualities, as well as coping with the stigma related to the topic sexuality and the culture of silence that follows. Most workplaces lack guidance documents and rules regarding the topic of sexuality and a lack of support from managers. Conclusion: To better help shape the support needs and possibilities of people with ID, allowing them to voice their sexualities and being recognized as sexual beings in a respectful manner; education, guidance, overall rules and regulations are needed for the caregivers tasked to work with them. This is an area where the caregivers and society as a whole have a deciding role, making sure that all people, no matter their abilities, are allowed to express themselves sexually. It is also important that society keeps on working against the taboo that is related to disabled people and sexual expression, which could lead to being stigmatized more than what they already are.
