THE REALITIES OF SUBURBAN FEMINISM : A study of feminism in the suburbs of Gothenburg among the immigrant communities.

Omar, Abdullahi January 2019 (has links)
This study on feminism is a study aimed at understanding a reality within feminism (suburban feminism) in the suburbs of Gothenburg and the underlying factors that contribute to the emergence of this new phenomenon, and why women in the suburbs relate to as an alternative social tool in the quest for better social standings. The research was focused on the 2 major issues and they were (1) the effect of intersectionality on feminism in the suburbs and (2), the effect of internal factors like culture and religion on feminism in the suburbs. Intersectional analysis in my study partly explained the emergence of this new phenomenon (suburban feminism) as a reality within feminism. Cultural shock experienced by the immigrant women when they come Sweden explained also the relevance of cultural polarisation as a factor in the emergence of suburban feminism. The research was done through the qualitative research methods among the immigrant populations living in the suburbs of Gothenburg. The primary research material was the respondent’s experiences and answers to a variety of questions. With the help of several respondents and earlier research done on feminism in the suburbs shows how suburban feminism as a phenomenon emerges and takes shape among the immigrant populations and how this kind of feminism emerges out of the daily challenges ranging from intersectionality, socio-economic setups and several other aspects the respondents refer to as cultural shock between different cultures that have converged in the suburbs. In general, suburban feminism is a phenomenon that emerged out of several factors that range most of them intended for the furtherance and empowerment of women in all spheres of life. The respondent’s answers to the questions fielded in this study together with the earlier research done on feminism and equality in Sweden formed the bedrock on which the study is anchored on. Suburban feminism in my study is a product of social construction different from feminism anchored on theories and this becomes more evident from the answers of my respondents in their understanding of feminism.

Wu, Yuan-Qi January 2018 (has links)

Efeito do citral no choque endotoxêmico / Effect of citral on endotoxemic shock

Borges, Gabriela Silva 23 March 2018 (has links)
Sepsis is characterized by the overproduction of inflammatory mediators, accompanied by tachycardia and hypotension. Experimentally, administration of endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS) in relatively high doses induces endotoxemic shock, a widely used model of sepsis in rats. Several groups have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antitumor roles of citral, an essential oil compound of Cymbopogon citratus. Emilio-Silva et al. (2017) have shown an antipyretic role of citral in a model of LPS-induced fever, accompanied by a reduction of cytokines and prostaglandin E2 plasma levels and in the preoptic area of hypothalamus (POA), the hierarchically most important thermoregulatory region. We hypothesized that citral attenuates the LPS-induced hypotension, besides mitigating the thermoregulatory adjustments in rats. All procedures were performed in agreement with ethical guidelines for animal experimentation aproved by the local ethical committee (CEUA 2015.1 1214 58-2). Femoral artery and vein were implanted with cannulas for blood pressure recording and LPS (1.5 mg/kg) or 0.9% apyrogenic saline injection. In a second surgical procedure a datalogger was implanted into the peritoneal cavity for measurements of body temperature. All surgical procedures were performed under Ketamin/xilazin (100/10 mg/kg) anesthesia. One day after arterial catheterization, 30 minutes prior to LPS or saline administration, the animals received either citral (100 mg / kg) or 1% tween 80 (vehicle) oralstarly. The cardiovascular parameters and body temperature were recorded for 300 minutes after the respective treatments. Mean blood pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were collected every 10 minutes after treatments and body temperature was recorded by the datalogger at 5 minute intervals. Blood samples were obtained in another set of rats for interleukin-6, PGE2, nitrite and nitrate and corticosterone analyses. The brain was removed for PGE2 and PGD2 analyses. Statistical differences between groups were analyzed by the two-way or one-way ANOVA test followed by Newman-Keuls post-test, with significance level adopted at p <0.05. As expected, LPS administration caused a decrease in MAP and an increase in HR, and these responses were not affected by citral. LPS also induced fever and increased plasma levels of interleukin - 6 (IL - 6), nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E 2 andcorticosterone. These parameters were also not altered by citral. On the other hand, citral caused a reduction in prostaglandin D2 concentration in the POA, but failed to alter PGE2 levels in this region. Our data are consistent with the notion that citral does not affect changes in cardiovascular and thermoregulatory parameters. Consistently, citral also caused no changes in both LPS-induced peripheral inflammatory mediators (in plasma) and in the POA, except PGD2. Therefore, in our model which mimetic a fairly critical situation, citral may not be sufficient to protect the organism from the deleterious actions of LPS. Financial support: FAPESP / CAPES.

Análise da expressão gênica em resposta ao choque térmico e cádmio no fungo aquático Blastocladiella emersonii / Analysis of gene expression in response to cadmium and heat shock in the aquatic fungus Blastocladiella emersonii

Georg, Raphaela de Castro 01 December 2006 (has links)
In this work we realized a large scale, sequencing program of cDNAs libraries obtained from mRNA of B. emersonii cells submitted to heat shock and cadmium stress. A total of 6350 high quality expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were obtained, representing 2326 unique putative genes (unigenes) of this fungus. From these putative unigenes, 1282 genes were classified at least in one of the three Gene Ontology Consortium (GO) categories. The analysis of the partial transcriptome of B. emersonii, determined until now, allowed the identification of 78 unigenes encoding molecular chaperones of all known protein families. To evaluate the global expression of the genes in response to environmental stresses, such as heat shock and cadmium, DNA microarray assays were performed. We observed that in response to heat shock B. emersonii induces the expreession of genes encoding proteins related to protein folding and proteolysis, as expected under high temperature conditions, as well as genes encoding proteins with antioxidant properties and proteins involved in nucleotide and carbohydrate metabolism. In response to cadmium stress, we mainly verified the induction of genes for proteins with antioxidant properties, proteins involved in amino acid metabolism, proteins related to cellular transport and proteins related to protein folding and proteolysis. One of the consequences of the exposure to cadmium is the increase of oxidative stress, and antioxidant proteins have a fundamental role in the response to this kind of injury. Amongst the genes observed during the B. emersonii EST sequencing program, ten genes encoding distinct proteins from the Hsp70 family were observed. Nine of them are expressed at least in one stage of the fungus development and seven genes presented a significant induction during heat shock treatment. These data suggest that the hsp70 genes perform an important role during development and in response to heat stress in B. emersonii. Another interesting result from this work was the enrichment of ESTs containing introns in the stress libraries. Thus, heat shock and cadmium stress decrease the efficiency of intron processing in B. emersonii, allowing for intron characterization. The cDNA for the Hsp17 protein presented the highest number of ESTs sequenced from the stress libraries. Northern blot experiments indicated that the hsp17 gene is expressed at very low levels throughout the life cycle of B. emersonii, however, as expected its expression increases drastically when sporulation or germination cells are submitted to heat shock. Hsp17 protein levels accompany its mRNA levels, indicating that the control of expression of the hsp17 gene occurs at a transcriptional level.

A CryAB Interactome Reveals Clientele Specificity and Dysfunction of Mutants Associated with Human Disease

Hoopes, Whitney Katherine 01 November 2016 (has links)
Small Heat Shock Proteins (sHSP) are critical molecular chaperones that function to maintain protein homeostasis (proteostasis) and prevent the aggregation of other proteins during cellular stress. Any disruption in the process of proteostasis can lead to prevalent diseases ranging from cancer and cataract to cardiovascular and Alzheimer's disease. CryAB (αB-crystallin, HspB5) is one of ten known human sHSP that is abundant in the lens, skeletal, and cardiac muscle. This protein is required for cardiac function and muscle cell integrity. When the cell experiences physiological stress, including heat shock, CryAB moves to the cytoskeleton to act as a chaperone and prevent aggregation of its protein clientele. This research is designed to investigate the molecular role of CryAB in cell proteostasis through the identification of putative protein clientele and chaperone activity analysis. We have identified over twenty CryAB-binding partners through combined yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and co-purification approaches, including interactions with myofibril proteins. Previously reported disease-associated CryAB missense variants were analyzed in comparison to wild type CryAB through Y2H binding assays. The characterization of the similarities and differences in binding specificities of these variants provide a foundation to better understand the chaperone pathways of CryAB and how these changes in molecular function result in the development of disparate diseases such as cataract, cancer, and various myopathies.

Design of a Rear-Wheel After-Market Suspension System for Manual Wheelchairs

Bierworth, Rick Daniel 22 March 2007 (has links)
The objective of this study was to design and build an after-market suspension for the rear wheels of a manual wheelchair. Suspension for wheelchairs is important because it has been reported that the International Organization for Standards' requirements for vibration loads on wheelchair users (ISO 2631-1), are not meet by today's standard wheelchairs. Today's wheelchairs need to be able to absorb everyday shock loads, thereby minimizing the energy transmitted to the user. The chosen design is based around the concept of adding shock reduction material between the hub of the wheel, and the axel bolt that connects the wheel to the frame of the chair. The approach taken was to design a suspension system that resides between an oversized wheel bearing, and the axle. To do this, ball-race bearings with an inner diameter of 4" were chosen, and polyurethane rubber was used as the shock absorbing material. Pro-Mechanica, a finite element analysis program, was used to analyze the suspension system. Since the most common camber/tilt for wheelchair wheels is three degrees from the vertical, the anticipated loads were applied to the wheel at this angle. A prototype of the suspension system was constructed to verify that the design would work, but no tests were performed on it. This analysis showed that the suspension system should not fail when subjected to 10 times the static load. This load was considered large enough to encompass the forces that a wheelchair chair wheel is typically subjected to. There is room for further work in the area of weight reduction, and in the use of the suspension system on steeper wheel cambers.

Federal Funds Target Rate Surprise and Equity Duration

Tee, Kienpin 05 1900 (has links)
In this paper I use an equity duration framework to develop and empirically test the hypothesis that returns on growth stock portfolios react more strongly to Federal Funds target rate change announcements, as compared to value stock portfolios. When I decompose the Federal Funds rate change, I find that portfolio returns are only sensitive to rate shocks, as opposed to the predictable component of rate change. Since growth stocks are expected to have higher duration than value stocks, I further explore the well documented polarity between value and growth stocks, by examining the interest rate sensitivities of portfolios that diverge along four fundamental-to-prices ratios: dividend yield, book-to-market value, earnings-to-price and cashflows-to-price. In each case, I find that price reactions are more pronounced for portfolios with high growth characteristics. I also document that portfolio returns react asymmetrically to positive and negative target rate surprises, and that this reaction is conditional on the state of business cycles - periods of economic expansions and recessions. To improve the robustness of my results, several statistical applications have been applied. First, I include Newey-west estimators to examine significant levels of regression estimates. Second, I check if there is any contemporaneous correlation across target rate shocks by applying ARIMA tests, and to overcome the problem resulted from serial correlation of target rate shocks, I substitute white noise residuals from the regressions on the rate shocks for target rate shocks to be new exogenous variables.
