Previous issue date: 2007-03-30 / This study, part of Project Direct - Towards the language of business
communication (LAEL/PUC-SP), aims to present the results of a needs analysis
carried out in the professional context of 40 waiters and two managers of two
sophisticated restaurants in the city of São Paulo. To collect the data, three
questionnaires were used two were answered by the waiters, and the third, by
the restaurant managers. In order to conduct the needs analysis of these
professionals, we looked for support in Hutchinson s & Waters (1987)
languages for specific purposes approach (1987). These authors argue that the
needs analysis is extremely important, as it enables not only the implementation
of a course but also its continuous evaluation. The linguistic analysis of the work
is based on the Functional Grammar proposed by Halliday (1994, 2004) and his
collaborators - among others, Eggins (1994) and Martin & White (2005).
Functional Grammar is a language theory that focuses on the effective use of
language, that is, the manner in which the user uses language in different
contexts. Functional Grammar was employed to analyze the appraisal items
that occur in the waiters answers to the questionnaires, based on the Appraisal
System of Martin & White (2005) and on the analysis model proposed by
Eggins & Slade (1997). The results of the needs analysis and of the Appraisal
System analysis revealed that the most important items to be included in a
professional qualification course, according to the waiters, are: assistance to
restaurant clients, self-evaluation, and performance. The present work intends
to have contributed to the suggestion of a course proposal for the professional
development of waiters that takes into account the needs considered by the
waiters who participated in this study as relevant for professionals who intend to
work in the area / Este estudo, parte do Projeto Direct - Em direção à linguagem dos negócios
restaurantes.

This work aims to identify how students from a 6th grade class at a public school in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, linguistically express the perception of their first text production experience from Moodle. Thus, I tried to reflect on the implications of this perception to the process of teaching and learning aiming at the digital literacy. In this setting, then, we proposed five classes in a Moodle institutional group from June to July, 2014. The classes were driven from the Brazilian Olympiad of Portuguese Language program, and the daily postings of the virtual environment constitute our research corpus. Having that, I sought to build pathways to understand the triad on-line teaching/cyberculture/digital literacy through a theoretical background which considers the Appraisal Theory (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005) aided by the approach of Cognitive Psychology (SCHERER, 2005), at the intersection between digital literacy (SOARES, 2002; COSCARELLI, 2014) and multiliteracies (ROJO, 2009; 2012), and the issues relating to cyberculture/cyberspace (LÉVY, 1999; LEMOS, 2000-2008). The analysis methodology is supported on the conceptual categories of the Appraisal Theory and on the guiding questions brought by the triad at Rojo (2009), Soares (2002, 2003, 2010), Coscarelli and Santos (2007), Coscarelli (2014) Franciosi, Medeiros and Cola (2003), Tori (2009), Lemos (2000), Lévy (1999), Dias (1999), Freitas (2010) and Santaella (2013). In this process, data is organized from the Appraisal Groups (AGs) design (WHITELAW, GARG; ARGAMON, 2005), which are coherent groups of words that together express a particular attitude. The results show the occurrence of 183 adjectives distributed in 163 AGs, from which we extract to reflect the categories of analysis (1) class, (2) Moodle, (3) production, (4) experience and (5) evaluator. Our analysis shows that the Appraisal Theory is an effective method both to evaluate the digital environment, consolidating its position as a teaching-learning place in primary education, and for the emotion lexical mapping of the age group that constitutes the analyzed group. Moreover, it shows the possibility of a satisfaction setting of an elementary school student to the process of digital literacy from the virtual learning environment.

[en] I GUESS I JUST HANDLE IT BECAUSE OF AFFECTION: APPLIED LINGUISTICS AND THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE SUFFERING OF A GROUP OF TEACHERS THAT WORK IN THE PRIVATE SCHOOL SYSTEM / [pt] EU ACHO QUE EU SÓ SEGURO A ONDA POR CAUSA DO AFETO: A LINGUÍSTICA APLICADA E AS PERCEPÇÕES DO SOFRIMENTO DE UM GRUPO DE PROFESSORES DA REDE PRIVADA DE ENSINOTHELMA CHRISTINA RIBEIRO CORTES 31 July 2017 (has links)
[en] Motivated to understand the possible factors and situations that may cause anguish and fear in teachers, the aim of my research is to analyse the perceptions of a group of teachers that works in a private school about their afflictions and the potential causes of these through discourse. From the verbalization of these perceptions, I try to understand what motivates suffering and how it affects our pedagogical practice, our visions about education and/or our interpersonal relationships with students, colleagues and school management. In order to do this, I turn to a diverse theoretical framework, which encompasses theoretical concepts on Applied Linguistics (Moita Lopes, 2006, 2013, Miller, 2013), Exploratory Practice (Allwright, 2006, Miller et al., 2008), Emotions (Zembylas, 2003, 2004, 2005; Rezende e Coelho, 2010; Palmer, 2012) and Appraisal System (Martin & White, 2005; Almeida, 2010; Vian Jr, 2009; 2010). Aligned with the qualitative-interpretative paradigm of research, with the contemporary perspective of Applied Linguistics and with the ethical-methodological perspective of Exploratory Practice, I present the analysis of some excerpts of a research talk (Araujo, 2014) that happened between four colleagues and me in an informal place. The results show that INSATISFACTION and INSECURITY (types of affects) predominate, demonstrating that part of our suffering comes from a dislike related to our professional functions and a fear of the school where we work, which we attribute to a marketing model of education. The data lead to the understanding that our view of education is at odds with that of the institution where we teach, making us act, many times, in contrary to our personal conceptions of education; however, we move on because of the affection we have for the students and because of the affection some of us have for this school.

2009), this thesis, which is inscribed in a qualitative-interpretative approach of a critical
analysis perspective , lies on the speech of social responsibility and the way like that is
employed in seeking for legitimacy and prestige within the neopentecostal brazilian
religious field, more specifically of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. The general
goal of this research is t reflect upon the speech on social responsibility and the rethoric of
selfpromotion of the Universal Church through the role of social actors in the making of his
her identities, materialized in the newspaper Folha Universal. In order to achieve that, we
have conjugated, in this research, social and discursive analysis. On the linguistic-discursive
approach, the research is based on the Critical Analysis of Discourse (ACD), specially in
Fairclough (2001, 2003, 2006), a proposal that provides theoretical-methodological tools to
investigate the language beyond the linguistic structures , that is, the discourse, social
practices in which it occurs and more ample structures. Theoretical assumptions were also
used of Sistemico-Functional Linguistics(LSF), matching with categories of the Transitivity
System of Halliday (1994, 2004), of the forms of representation of social actors in the socioeconomic
perspective by Van Leeuwen (1997, 2008) and of the Appraisal system by Martin
and White (2005). As we develop the argumentation on thesobre social role of religion in this
thesis, we make use of the authors such as Freston (1994), Oro (1997, 2003), Campos (1996,
1999), Mariano (1999), Meneses (2008), among several ones. We have also used a series of
concepts and categories coming from the field of communication and marketing on the
business social responsability and social marketing . In this area, we take as references the
contributions of Bueno (2003), Foss? and Sartoretto (2003) and Zenone (2006). The corpus of
the work is framed by news taken at the newspaper Folha Universal, in which are given the
social responsibility actions of the church . The timeframe used was on the editions of 2010
thru 2012. Results found at he analysis of the News lead to semantic features of Assessment
of Affection, Judgment and Appreciation, many times followed by Gradation, and the
Attribution, one of the subsystems of the Attachment, are evidence of positive assessments for
the Universal Church and its agents and make up rethorical elements which provide structure
for the discourse of the Universal Church at the newspaper Folha Universal consisted of its
image (style) of social responsibility . Results show that the most frequente social actors of
the discourse are, on one hand, the Universal Church itself and its volunteers, famous (actors,
actresses, presenters), politicians and authorities, on the other hand, the population which was
helped by the Church social projects . The first group seems to be Always activated, however
the second one, most of the time rather passive. These are also represented by assimilation in
most of the occurrences, however the other ones by individualization and nomination
entitled by honorification, except for the volunteers that are represented either as an
individual, or as a group / Situada na Lingu?stica Aplicada (PENNYCOOK, 1998; MOITA LOPES, 2003, 2006, 2008,
pesquisa, an?lises sociais e discursivas.
Bueno (2003), Foss? e Sartoretto (2003), Bonotto e Peruzzolo (2003) e Zenone (2006). O
corpus do trabalho ? constitu?do por not?cias veiculadas no jornal Folha Universal, nas quais
O recorte temporal estabelecido

This thesis presents the implementation of a genre pedagogy as proposed by the Sydney School (ROSE; MARTIN, 2012) in English classes for Specific Purposes (ESP) at a federal technical school in Rio Grande do Norte, in the Computer Networks undergraduation course. The proposal is to identify the relevant genres to the course after carrying out needs analysis, using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) from Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) as a resource that facilitates the understanding of texts, approaching the theoretical studies of SFL and implement them in the classroom practice, so that students can conceive language as a social practice. Another aim is to understand the perceptions of students about the classes taught. This is a quanti-qualitative research (D?RNYEI, 2007), in which the SFL was used as a theoretical model of language analysis and research, since it is the very object of research, and at the same time the theoretical framework that underlies the students' opinions about the classes. Aspects of Narrative research (CLANDININ; CONNELY, 2004) are also used to give voice to the account of my own experiences as a Network English language teacher and as a researcher, as well as to make sense from the students? representations after the experience of our classes with the support of the pedagogy adopted and the Systemic Functional approach and also give voice to the reflection on experiences reported. The Appraisal System (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005) was the analytical instrument in order to verify how to shape the students? perceptions about ESP classes. The most widely used category in the Attitude System, one of the semantic domains of Appraisal System, responsible for linguistic expression of positive and negative reviews, was the assessment of the Valuation type, revealing the importance of working with genre pedagogy and originality in the form of the text approach. Working with authentic texts from the field, group work, collaborative teaching and recognition of types of texts were aspects of genre pedagogy most mentioned by students in their assessments. Another type of assessment found was the negative impact Reaction, category used to describe the emotional impact experienced in class. The results of the analysis of the evaluations made by the students about the experiences in our classes showed the recognition and validity of the use of SFL in ESP classes and consequently the genre pedagogy proposed by the Sydney School. At the same time, it was revealed the desire to develop oral communication, promoting reflection on the inclusion of oral competence in the course curriculum.

This quali-quantitative research is based on a pedagogical action regarding reading strategies based on methods in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) (HUTCHINSON; WATERS, 1991; ROBINSON, 1991; DUDLEY-EVANS; ST JOHN, 1998; RAMOS, 2005), in the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) within the context of Technical and Technological Basic Education (Ensino B?sico T?cnico e Tecnol?gico - EBTT), at the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte, Jo?o C?mara campus. The objective is to identify and quantify linguistic items using instruments and categories based on theoretical frameworks from the Systemic Functional Linguistic perspective (HALLIDAY 1985, 1994; HALLIDAY; MATHIESSEN, 2014), more specifically, carrying out a Discourse Analysis through the Appraisal System elaborated by Martin and Rose (2003; 2007), and Martin and White (2005). The corpus of this research is comprised of responses to three evaluation questionnaires, applied via Google Docs, to 24 participants, and an Experimental Analysis applied to 19 participants who are students in the Basic Lifelong Training Course (Curso de Forma??o Inicial e Continuada - FIC) designed in this pedagogical action for the computing field. The Discourse Analysis focuses on the perceptions of these learners regarding the pedagogical intervention. We observed how students? characterize, through lexicogrammatical choices, their perceptions of the FIC Course, using the categories Appreciation and Judgement, which are components of the Subsystem, Attitude, in the Appraisal System, taking into account the types reaction, composition and valuation and the subcategory capacity. Results indicated that the speech was marked mainly by the subcategories reaction quality and valuation relevance. In addition, the Experimental Analysis did not present a statistically significant gain in the reading comprehension of texts in the technical area even though there was an increase in the score of 9 out of 19 participants from the pre-test to the post-test.

Previous issue date: 2017-08-18 / The objective of this research is to understand how the teaching of Portuguese for the deaf is being discussed by users of Portuguese blogs for the deaf, in which linguistic analyzes will be carried out under the Systemic-Functional Grammar. The research is of the qualitative-interpretative type and blogs have been used where tips on how to teach the Portuguese language to these students. Studies on the area of deafness showed that the Brazilian Sign Language(Libras) should be the first language to be acquired by the deaf, to further assist them in learning Portuguese as L2 or second language, in writing mode. The Systemic Functional Grammar is analyzed over Appraisal through the Portuguese language teaching blogs for the deaf by the GSF Attitude System applied in the comments of the participants of the posts of blogs who are professionals in teaching Portuguese to deaf people. Technological advances provide efficiency and convenience in the teaching-learning process of the Portuguese language through the use of blogs as a tool. We conclude that the blog advantage is favoring bilingualism and can be accessed in two languages or more. Thus, both Libras and Portuguese can help the deaf learning process, and they have also space for images which support the linguistic transcription of both languages.

[en] FOSTERING CRITICAL FEELING: AN INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST LOOK AT THE SOCIOCONSTRUCTION OF LANGUAGE TEACHERS SOCIAL IDENTITIES OF GENDER, RACE/ETHNICITY AND CLASS / [pt] POR UM SENTIR CRÍTICO: UM OLHAR FEMINISTA INTERSECCIONAL SOBRE A SOCIOCONSTRUÇÃO DE IDENTIDADES SOCIAIS DE GÊNERO, RAÇA/ETNIA E CLASSE DE PROFESSORAS DE LÍNGUASTHAIS REGINA SANTOS BORGES 03 May 2018 (has links)
influência direta das identidades sociais de gênero, raça/etnia e classe social na construção discursiva de suas práticas identitárias de professora, reforçando a importância de compreendermos os atravessamentos identitários que nos configuram, no mundo e com o mundo (Souza, 2011), para a promoção de uma consciência crítica (Freire, 1987) e de lutas hegemônicas (Fairclough, [1992] 2001) possíveis no cenário da sala de aula de língua estrangeira como um lugar de dissenso e desaprendizagem (hooks, 1994, 2003; Moita Lopes et al, 2006, 2013). Reforço ainda que a contribuição deste trabalho está não em dar voz a essas mulheres, mas, sim, em nos permitir ouvir as representações que fazem da realidade (Riessman, 1993) da sala de aula, visando a coconstrução e ressignificação dessa experiência, para fomentar o devir do sentir crítico que defendo neste trabalho. / [en] The aim of this research is to understand the socioconstruction of the identities of three EFL teachers in relation to their intersectional crossings (Ferreira, 2012, 2015; Collins;Bilge, 2016), through a micro analysis, which makes use of the Systemic-Functional Linguistics Appraisal System (Halliday; Hasan, 1989;
Halliday, 1994; Martin; White, 2005), and a macro analysis, in a process of critical reflexivity that aims at the ripening of a critical feeling (Borges, 2016), which is based on the awareness of issues related to human suffering, stigma, ideology and power relations (Foucault, 1969; Goffman, 1963; Butler, 1993). Thus, I analyze narratives of critical moments experienced by teachers and stories of agentivity in
their daily pedagogical practices, under the premises of the qualitative methodology of research, especially the concept of situated knowledge (Haraway, 1988), and in alignment with intersectional feminist epistemology (Lykke, 2010). The results indicate the direct influence of social identities of gender, race/ethnicity and social class in the discursive construction of their identity practices as teachers,
reinforcing the importance of understanding the identity crossings that shape us, in the world and with the world (Souza, 2011), to promote critical conscience (Freire, 1987) and the possible hegemonic struggles (Fairclough, [1992] 2001) in the setting of the foreign language classroom as a place of dissent and unlearning (hooks, 1994, 2003; Moita Lopes et al, 2006, 2013). I also stress that the contribution of this work does not lie in giving voice to these women, but rather in the chance of allowing us to listen to the representations they make (Riessman, 1993) of the classroom reality, aiming at the co-construction and re-signification of this experience so it helps develop the becoming of the critical feeling I defend in this paper.

[en] STUDENTS HELD BACK BY THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM RECONSTRUCTING SCHOOL LIFE: A STUDY ABOUT EVALUATION AND IDENTITY IN SMALL STORIES / [pt] ALUNOS EM SITUAÇÃO DE RETENÇÃO RECONSTRUINDO O COTIDIANO ESCOLAR: UM ESTUDO SOBRE AVALIAÇÃO E IDENTIDADE EM PEQUENAS HISTÓRIASHELOISA QUIRINO DE OLIVEIRA 18 November 2015 (has links)
[en] The majority of Brazilian public schools adopt a system which keeps
students who fail at the end of the school year in the same grade. As an English
language teacher in the school where this study was guided, I have been teaching
a group of students who have remained in the sixth grade for three, four, or even
five years. Based on this fact, my motivation to conduct this research derived
from an interest in investigating: (1) how do students evaluate the context in
which they find themselves? (2) which identities are constructed during the
interaction among students/participants and teacher/researcher? The study is based
on the sociosemiotic approach of language, as proposed by Systemic Functional
Linguistics, aligned with socioconstructionist paradigms of identity which
conceive it as a fluid, emerging, interactional and sociocultural phenomena. The
construction of identities is observed in small stories spontaneously told during
Discussion Groups carried out with the participants. Two perspectives lead the
analysis of evaluative moments in the narratives: the analytical tools of the
Appraisal Theory and the seminal and contemporary theoretical concepts related
to narratives, which emphasize the study of evaluation in narrative discourse.
Following a qualitative methodology, ten students from secondary school and
EJA ( Educação de Jovens e Adultos ) were interviewed by the
researcher/teacher about how they see their school practice. Stories told by the
participants portray situations of everyday school life which suggest relationships
of conflict among students, teachers, coordinators and principals. The coconstruction
of small stories indicates strong attitudes of collective identities
through which participants blame the other, constructing themselves as victims of
a school environment that does not provide the necessary quality of life for an
effective learning process.
