Design Guidelines for the Historic Downtown of the City of St. George, Utah

Tatton, Bronson Ron 01 December 2008 (has links)
This document proposes historic preservation guidelines for the downtown area of the City of St. George, Utah. It grew from a summer internship with the city where I took inventory of the streetscape in the Historic Downtown and prepared recommendations in the form of a PowerPoint Presentation that was given to the city council. This paper summarizes the summer internship and introduces a more appropriate approach based on reflection of the internship. The new approach involves a thorough inventory of the historic character, in-depth research of the historic elements that contribute to the historic character, development of design guidelines and standards, reviews, and codification of the design guidelines and standards. The historic elements that contribute most to the city’s historic character are identified as 1) block and lot layout and building setbacks, 2) architecture, 3) irrigation ditches, 4) tree lined streets, and 5) other streetscape elements and site features. Through comprehensive research of old photography, literature, and existing conditions these historic elements are further defined. The historic elements are currently being specified in design guidelines and standards and reviewed by the city in preparation for possible codification. (173 pages)

Identificação de padrões de utilização da web mediada por tecnologias assistivas / Patterns identification of web usage mediated by assistive technologies

Santana, Vagner Figuêredo de, 1982- 04 August 2009 (has links)
Orientador: Maria Cecilia Calani Baranauskas / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Computação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-13T11:08:03Z (GMT). / Abstract: The Web has millions of websites, but few of them are in accordance with simple accessibility requirements such as the use of relative sizes or description of graphic elements, that can represent User Interface (UI) design problems. To identify this kind of problem the data source usually used is the Web page's code. However, other problems may appear only when the user interacts with the UI. Moreover, without considering usage data, usability problems and/or accessibility barriers can stay unknown. Thus, identifying how users interact with UIs is a way of detecting design problems and discovering uses different from the ones defined during the UI Project phase. There are different approaches to capturing user interaction with UIs as video capture, users' eyes movements, etc. In the Web, some methods are less appropriated than others due to the need for using specific components of hardware and/or software, which can reduce the participation of the target audience and reduce how meaningful an evaluation is. To know how users use the UI in the Web, it is possible to use logs captured at serverside and at client-side. The data that can be captured at client-side allows obtaining more details and, consequently, rebuild user's actions in a greater granularity than the identification of the pages that a user had visited. Then, small differences during the interaction can be identified and may help specialists in the task of identifying usage patterns and possible design problems. Due to the amount of data resulted from the event capture at client-side, the use of automatic tools became necessary for the capture or the extraction of information from logs. This work presents requirements for website evaluation tools based on event logs. In addition, according to these requirements, defines an asynchronous event capture model to help developers of website evaluation tools. Therefore, requirements and capture model represent a starting point for projects involving the development of tools to capture event logs triggered at client's device, supporting the data capture during real use. Other contribution is the specification of a model to identify patterns of Web usage mediated by assistive technologies. The development of this model shows the viability of capturing data during real use, involving assistive technology users, in their common use environment. A usage graph results from the model. It is constituted by usage flows and common walks of an evaluated Web page, as well as the visual representation of significant differences in these flows. The model also proposes a technique for identifying possible design problems in evaluated Web pages, helping in the task of evaluating Web pages, aiming at the identification of usage patterns of assistive technology users.

The World Wide Web Consortium has been fomenting discussions regarding accessibility, and proposes guidelines to the development of web-accessible content, authoring tools and user agents that promotes accessibility on the web content. Although the W3C accessibility guidelines are necessary to enhance the knowledge about web accessible design, it is also essential to promote the development of socio-technical solutions with the end user participation during the overall design process, including people with disability, and approach acknowledge and respect the differences in the designers¿ education. There are methods, techniques, guidelines, technologies and tools to support the design and evaluation of web pages accessible to their users; nevertheless, we didn¿t find in literature web information systems design process which widely considers and explicitly deals with the differences among people and their activities in inclusive social environments. It is more and more necessary to create strategies to approach inclusion and accessibility in both software product and design process. The physical, sensorial and cognitive differences of users, among others, shall also be acknowledge and considered in the design process to configure environments in which the stakeholders¿ participation is genuine. This research aims at investigating and proposing mechanisms to the design of web systems which respond to the contemporary demands in configuring a more flexible society, open to the differences, known as an inclusive society. It is also an objective to investigate and understand how Organizational Semiotic and Participatory Design, together, aggregate value to the design of information systems adequate to the interests and the needs of an inclusive society. From the conceptual perspective, the main contributions of this thesis are the proposition of principles related to the design of inclusive web information systems, and some participatory design techniques aligned to these principles. From the practical perspective, the changes resulted from the cases studied in each context, as well as the organization, the publication and dissemination of best practices in inclusive design for the web / Doutorado / Metodologia e Tecnicas da Computação / Doutor em Ciência da Computação

This content may be of several types: texts, sounds, animations, videos, etc. In general, it is expected from teachers to develop and publish this content by themselves. Due to the necessity of reusing and sharing information formatted as files of several kinds by students and teachers, it is relevant to investigate new ways of increasing productivity during the authoring process while trying to empower learning. In this perspective, it has been developed an application to author educational modules in hypertext with modeling and later navigation aided by concept mapping. Among the pedagogical objectives of the application developed, it can be mentioned that it allows working with concept maps, which are diagrams that favor meaningful learning. This learning theory is strongly related to creativity and innovation, themes of major importance in Engineering Education nowadays. But this application not only allows working with concept maps, it also develops hypertext as HTML pages. This makes it useful in the authoring process of tutorials, school work and virtual classes or in the indexation of files from several formats about a certain subject. In the case of virtual classes, the application would be used by a content expert, which may be a teacher; the purpose would be to prepare the first version of an educational module, which could be improved later on by a group of specialists, if needed. The authoring software is called COMA (Concepts and Maps) and its potential use goes beyond Engineering Education due to its easy of use, its free distribution and its multilingual interface / Mestrado / Eletrônica, Microeletrônica e Optoeletrônica / Mestre em Engenharia Elétrica

The development of a reference database of health information resources to facilitate informed lifestyle choice

Cottrell, Genevieve Lee 30 June 2008 (has links)
This study investigates, within the current health care situation, the interrelationship of the user, resources and tool in the design of a prototype WELLNESS database-driven web site. A shift has taken place in health care, in which the base of conventional medicine has broadened to integrate other systems, practices and worldviews. These include complementary and alternative medicine, health promotion, disease prevention and wellness. Emphasis is placed on the need to take personal responsibility for one's own health and wellness. The global burden of chronic disease, reaching epidemic proportions, is increasingly linked to risk factors resulting from personal lifestyle choices. The growing evidence of the user's need to make personal, informed, lifestyle choices and their reliance on the Web for health information, required investigation. WELLNESS, a specific orientation to health and wellness, formed the framework within which the user and resources were defined and the tool designed. The user was profiled as the WELLNESS health information seeker, hereby contributing significantly to an understanding of the user in this new context. The user profile informed the establishment of resource selection criteria and tool design. The identification of WELLNESS content selection criteria, within a five-dimensional model, was required to ensure quality, relevant and credible resources. The tool is comprised of the WELLNESS thesaurus and WELLNESS database-driven web site. The WELLNESS thesaurus was constructed based on a combination of relevant thesauri. It will be used as an indexing tool. An investigation of existing health information web sites highlighted the importance of designing a specific WELLNESS database-driven web site. A database host was identified against which the original study's conceptual schema was assessed. A low-fidelity prototype web site was designed as the interface between the WELLNESS health information seeker and the database of WELLNESS health information resources. This study has epidemiological, philosophical, epistemological, sociological and psychological relevance. The provision of access to WELLNESS health information resources, made available in the WELLNESS database-driven web site, for personal, informed lifestyle choice by the WELLNESS health information seeker could potentially contribute to the reduction of the global burden of chronic disease. / Information Science / D.Litt. et Phil. Improving internet usability - a framework for domain name policy evaluation.

Rowe, Joshua Luke, josh@email.nu January 2009 (has links)
A domain name is a unique alphanumeric designation that facilitates reference to sets of numbers which actually locate a particular computer on the Internet. Domain names are a fundamental part of the Internet's user interface. Improving the usability of the Internet depends upon effective domain name policy. This study is intended to contribute to improvement in Internet usability for the end users of domain names. Benefits of more usable domain names include: higher sales, customer satisfaction and productivity, and reduced support costs. Domain name policies worldwide vary considerably. Consequently, end users are inconvenienced by contradictory domain name policies, diminishing the predictability of an entity's domain name, and thus decreasing usability for end users. The study objective was to develop criteria with which policy makers can evaluate their domain name policies, in order to improve the usability of domain names for end users. The main research question posed was: What are the criteria for an effective domain name policy? The research methodology included a literature review, domain name policy examination and an ethnographic narrative. The literature review found existing research examining either domain names or usability in isolation. However, research examining the intersection of the two is scarce. The existing research describes domain names as part of the web user interface. In practical terms, this is about how people use domain names to access web sites, email addresses and other Internet resources. It was established that the predictability (and thus usability) of domain names relies on effective domain name policy. The non-standardised and widely delegated process of domain name policy development leads to unpredictable and inconsistent domain names. The narrative recollection presented the researcher's inside perspective on the domain name industry, with a focus on domain name usability. The researcher provided first-hand insights into the evolution of the industry and policy development process, from Australian and international perspectives. To address the problem of poor domain name usability, a framework for domain name policy evaluation is proposed. The framework extends the current research that treats domain names as a user interface by proposing criteria which address usability concerns. The framework allows policy makers to critically assess domain name policies with end users in mind. Examples of the criteria include: understanding who are its intended and untended users, and whether it's consistent with other domain names. The framework has the potential to set an international standard for the critical evaluation of domain name policy, and become the basis for further research. This study was developed from the researcher's perspective as a participant in the domain name industry. A secondary lens regarding the usability of domain names was then applied. This study has only scraped the surface in terms of how the research fields of domain names and usability may be considered together. The research methodology for this study was primarily qualitative and interpretive. A quantitative study of domain name policies globally could provide further insight into areas including: the differences in second level country code domain names, and language implications of domain names.
