“Red Tabs” Life and death in the 6th South African Armoured Division, 1943 – 1945

Bourhill, James F. January 2014 (has links)
The thesis seeks to understand, first and foremost, what the members of the 6th South African Armoured Division in Italy during the Second World War experienced in their day-to-day lives on campaign. It is therefore primarily a social history. Although an exhaustive analysis of the demographics of the division is beyond the scope of this study, an attempt was made in Chapter 2 to identify some of the characteristics of the volunteers and their motivations for enlisting. Recruitment statistics and other sources show that in the final stage of the war, volunteers were most likely to be school-leavers and university students. Chapters three to eight detail the daily life in camp and on the road as the division progressed up the length of Italy. The main themes revolve around the necessities of life, recreation, leisure and ways of dealing with long periods of inactivity. The more controversial topics of sexuality, alcohol use, and battle fatigue are not avoided. Regardless of the capacity in which they served, all those attached to the 6th South African Armoured Division experienced the country and its people. Homesickness, discomfort and the fulfilling of basic needs was the common bond. Chapter nine examines the topic of casualties and what it reveals about the men and their experience. At first glance, it would appear that the casualty rate was exceptionally low for a front line division. However, on closer examination, the casualty rate was found to be in line with that experienced by other nations involved in the Italian campaign. As expected, it was found that casualties occurred mainly in infantry units, although accidents accounted for 25 per cent of injuries. In the final chapter, the conclusions are presented and discussed in a theoretical context. Memory is used as a category of analysis. Scholars are in agreement that distortion and cleansing occurred due to the tendency of contemporary accounts to accentuate the positive. The needs of post-war society also helped to ensure that the language and experience of the front line soldier was overwhelmed / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / lk2014 / Historical and Heritage Studies / DPhil / Unrestricted

Karlsson Larm, Kristin January 2020 (has links)
This essay examines the concept of memory through a literature study of articles in three prominent archival journals. The aim of the study is to investigate if, and in that case how, the concept of memory is made visible in relation to archives as an institution and collection in three archival journals. The three archival journals that are under examination are Archival Science, American Archivist and Archivaria, with articles published between the years of 2013 to 2020. My study follows the previous research of Trond Jacobsen, Ricardo L. Punzalan and Margaret L. Hedstrom in the 2013 article Invoking ‘‘collective memory’’: mapping the emergence of a concept in archival science. My essay examines the seven following years; 2013-2020. This essay aims to provide a broader view of memory in archival science as it focuses on the concept of memory instead of “collective memory”. Three themes are found and examined; memory and identity, remembering and forgetting, and the archivist’s role in the establishment of memory. Assmann (2006; 2011) uses four different memory formations to illustrate the complexity of the concept. Jimerson (2009) also gives the study a theoretical framework by explaining the power structure and the relationship between the archivist and the concept of memory. The results show that the concept of memory is complex and that there are multiple definitions and understandings of memory. To use a universal definition of the concept of memory is problematic because of it’s multiple understandings. This thesis agrees with the articles examined in that we need interdisciplinary views on how the concept of memory is made visible in relation to archives as an institution and collection, and that archivists need broader tools of how to understand and problematize the concept of memory.

Novotná, Petra January 2016 (has links)
In my diploma thesis I describe the process, in which some episodes of the radio program Příběhy 20. století are made and with this example I explain, which factors can influence remembering in a medium of the public sphere and how "lieux de mémoire" occur in its broadcasting. I examine the recording of some of the narratives that can possibly be presented in the radio program, how the interviewers handle the interviewees and what motivation do they have to work in a project like this. I focus on how the stories are picked for the radio program, how are they edited, who takes part in the editing and how is it possible that they are in charge of it. My diploma thesis also includes a detailed description of the social position of Post Bellum organisation and its fundamental project Paměť národa, which are both closely connected to radio program Příběhy 20. století. In the conclusion of my thesis I deal with the fact, that this social position is one of the main elements in the process of memory making in public sphere medium, because it has an indirect impact on it. In my thesis I try to answer, what influence can the examined radio program (as part of institutionalized remembering and media communication) have on social memory.

Animated Memories : A case study of the animated documentary 'Saydnaya – Inside a Syrian Torture Prison' (2016) and its potential within social memory

Scheuermann, Melina January 2019 (has links)
Through its ability to create images of non-representable incidents animation expands the range and depth of what documentary can represent and how. This master thesis investigates the potential of animated documentary within social memory exemplified by the interactive animated documentary Saydnaya – Inside a Syrian Torture Prison (Forensic Architecture, 2016). By applying a feminist spatial approach, I aim to contribute to the understanding of the role of animated documentary images within social memory.Embodied and haptic spectatorship as well as haptic materiality are crucial in this case study due to the nature of the virtual screen images and interactive navigation (compared to montage) of the architectural 3D model. Testimonies and evidence presented in documentary film require a discursive establishment of truth. Indexicality is discussed in this regard and eventually a theoretical shift towards movement suggested. I demonstrate that Saydnaya extends the strategies in animated documentary that have been in focus so far, such as representing mental states and subjective experiences, by deploying methods of forensic aesthetics. This opens up novel ways to establish truth claims and persuasion in documentary filmmaking that require future research.

Histórias de pescadores : memórias de vidas submersas /

Duarte-Alves, Andreia. January 2007 (has links)
We propose a dive in the imaginary of the fishermen, especially concerning the history of the village, the labor in the river, the mandatory displacement after the flooding of the lake and the adaptation process. We compose, from the language of those people, a general picture capable of expressing the comprehension of their own history, of the polical forces that interfered in their fate, of the facts that hit them and so many other unpredicted events triggered by the forced moving from the place where they lived in. The narratives, taken in public areas and informal conversations - histories and affairs about the past and the present - compose a chronicle of the daily routine, and exalt the materiality of life and the transforming action of the fishermen over the space. Those daydreams are not more abstractions or escapes from reality, on the contrary, they are strategies to act in the world, build life and take over the reins of their own destiny. This particular form of registraction of the collective memory merely provides the encounter with the forms of organization of the practices and the customs in the village from its start in the beginning of the 20th century, going over all its variations, up to a description of the current way of life. The narratives registered in informal conversations of the daily routine of the fishermen reveal a complex and ambiguous relationship with space and time... [en] HORTO FLORESTAL: A MEMORY PLACE OF RIO DE JANEIRO CITY: THE BUILDING OF THE MUSEU DO HORTO AND ITS ASSOCIATED SOCIAL MEMORY PROJECT / [pt] HORTO FLORESTAL: UM LUGAR DE MEMÓRIA DA CIDADE DO RIO DE JANEIRO: A CONSTRUÇÃO DO MUSEU DO HORTO E SEU CORRESPONDENTE PROJETO SOCIAL DE MEMÓRIA

LAURA OLIVIERI CARNEIRO DE SOUZA 12 July 2013 (has links)
[en] This work is the academic outcome of an action-research that lasted three years at the Horto Florestal of Rio de Janeiro. The hypothesis that nurtured the research is that the population that lives at the Horto Florestal is traditional and therefore, it holds a social memory in need to be preserved. Due to historical and contemporary urban land disputes in the area, that social memory has been systematically disqualified by the public transcripts and its agents; denied by the representatives of the land interests upon the place, and kept in the silence by the very local population as a social resistance form. This work meant to contribute with a reinterpretation of the local history, an area understood as a city’s memory place, through a social memory project developed with the local residents, from June, 2008 to February, 2012. The compilation of the documents that provide support to this work was undertake in two lines: 1) research of historical documents about the Horto, and the ancient Freguesia da Gávea in public repositories, gathering documents such as: voyagers and reports and chronics, official recent and ancient printed materials, photographs, maps, drawings, old narratives, etc. and 2) action-research through an social intervention that gave birth, and was shaped by, the construction of the Museu do Horto: social memory project of the Horto Florestal of Rio de Janeiro. The field work recorded hidden transcripts, filmed events; followed tracks within the woods; photographed people, buildings, festivals, food, herbs, etc., to document intangible cultural assets that resisted the time, the lack of credit and the disqualification of the place’s social memory. The result is a dissertation that would better be presented in hypertext, in order to allow the reader to navigate from one support to another, to learn about the non-spoken, the badly[mal]-said[dito] [maldito equal dammed] and the intentionally ignored. To visualize part of the museum’s collection, the associated chapter was formatted as a reference catalog, following specific international norms. This work counted on the participation of NGO´s, such as the Associação de Moradores e Amigos do Horto (AMAHOR) and individuals that support the local population in its struggle to preserve the local social memory as a mean to resist the threat of being removed from their place. This dissertation sustains that the settlement of the Horto Florestal do Rio of Janeiro dates from the 16th. Century, initially as headquarter of important sugar plantations and, latter on, as coffee farms. Furthermore, the local population was able to hold its social integrity and economic importance for the city of Rio de Janeiro through the last four centuries. Therefore, the place deserves the recognition as such: an important memory place in need of preservation.

To begin a discussion, was made a contextualized history on socioeconomic issues and a Ukrainian immigration in Brazil, in the state of Paraná, and in Prudentópolis city - PR. For this purpose, the researchers Batista and Martins (2013), Boruszenko (1969), Burko (1963), Menezes (2009), Oliveira (2013), Matilde (2006), Priori (2012), among others. (2010), as well as some studies on this kind of newspaper, based on the works of researchers Conde (2000), Park (2008) and Szeremeta (2014). The newspaper Pracia is a centenary newspaper made in Prudentópolis-PR, and has as employees the descendants of Ukrainians living in the city.In the care of two priests, the newspaper has a fortnightly circulation (2,700 copies), sent by mail to subscribers in several cities in Brazil, with the largest number of readers present in Paraná and Santa Catarina states. For a study of this research, we have found 245 obituaries, published between the years 2001 and 2014. This text was revised for publications in Portuguese, which were incorporated from the year 2001; In view of whole situation, the newspaper was only published in the Ukrainian language since 1911. To organize and systematize the material, was used methodological resources of the Documentary Research (PIMENTEL, 2001; SÁ-SILVA, ALMEIDA e GUINDANI; 2009) and Content Analysis (BARDIN, 1976). The theoretical contribution of this research to understand the process of representation was based on the theory of Social Representations, based on the concepts of anchoring and objectification, by Serge Moscovici (2013). To support this analysis, the theoretical contributions on the studies of social memory, by Celso Pereira de Sá (2015) and also, different visions and understandings about death, were used to provide theoretical background. Among the authors, we can mention Da Matta (1997), Vilar (2001), Elias (2001), Franco, (2007), Combinato and Queiroz, 2011), Atanásio (2010), Patriarca e Lima 2014, Tenchena (2010), Guérios (2007), Costa (2012), Corso and Martenovetko (2011). The data resulting from the analysis showed that death is represented as a divine call to a new life, obtained from merit in fulfilling the earthly mission, that each individual is assigned. The final analyzes also point, theoretically-comparative, the understanding about death from the representation obtained with theoretical conceptions about the phenomenon in contemporary societies. Dentre os autores utilizados, podemos citar Da Matta (1997), Vilar (2001), Elias (2001),Franco, (2007), Combinato e Queiroz, 2011), Atanásio (2010), Patriarca e Lima (2015), Roush, 2014, Tenchena (2010), Guérios (2007), Costa (2012), Corso e Martenovetko (2011).

Our research tries to recognize learning and sharing skills through exchange practices in that group. We also attempt to the affection involved and how it nurture relationships within and outside the group. We highlight the ways by which assemblages and debates within the group may extend spaces for participants to claim for their rights and foster their commitment and influence in actions developed by the State. We assume a constructionist perspective, which leads us to focus on the specific ways by which the group organize conversation and make it easier between participants. We moved our focus from group as a phenomenon to group practices and we propose an understanding of group as a social construction. The group we focused as case study is Lady Mila s Mothers Club, created in the 1969. We engaged in conversations within the group in order to understand how participants worked together in the group and also to recover the group timeline, which gave us visibility to the diversity of historical moments shared by the participants. We also performed four individual interviews in order to give visibility to discursive positioning and dialogues in speeches which were analysed using dialogic maps. The maps we produced made it possible to identify two major themes related to the group history: the operational characteristics of the group and the support of the group during regular activities. We conclude that the possibility of sharing emotions and abilities, the coexistence of activities within and outside the group, the exchange of knowledge and the ability to generate income, contributed to the group permanence over the past 45 years / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo entender as múltiplas dimensões da participação grupal que sustenta a permanência no tempo de um Clube de Mães.

Memória social de participantes de comunidades eclesiais de base em Santo André / Social memory of the participants of Basic Ecclesial Communities in Santo André

Silva, Gustavo Xavier Ferreira da 28 June 2012 (has links)
This study is about the memories of the participants of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) in a parish area in Santo André. The aim of this work is to understand the dialectical relationship between social life and the subjectivity of the persons who narrate their recollections. In order to capture the totality of life experiences from childhood until the present time (as they are rebuilt in the individual memorial narrative), the method employed is Oral History of Life. Narrators travel through their memories and unite them to reflections, critical evaluations, explanations and interpretations which tend to form a totalizing sense of life. Aspects as faith, political and social commitments, social relations and spaces, human developments, responses when faced with difficulties, values, work and the relationship with time and personal testimonies have all emerged from the recollections here gathered. The researcher builds some reflections with the narrators about the elements which arise from their narrated memories, resorting to authors such as Ecléa Bosi, Maurice Halbwachs, Karl Marx, István Mészáros, José Moura G. Filho, Guimarães Rosa, liberation theologists and others. This study is based on four individuals and their life histories and was enriched by observations in several different spaces and by the close personal relationship with many other militants of groups and movements related to the BECs, particularly in the region of ABC.
