This Project aims at reflecting critically upon a teaching proposal at a federal university in the northeast of Brazil in the subject “English for Computer Studies by discussing the making up, implementation and evaluation of a teaching material which focuses on the participation in international academic events. Embedded in the Social- Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (SCHAT) (VYGOTSKY, 1934/2007; LEONTIEV, 1977/1997; ENGESTRÖM, 1987/1999), a locus in which reflection, desire and action are related to oneself, others and society by means of social practices. The research has the objective of providing the university with a possibility to revise the role of the English language in different courses so as to link the teaching/learning object to learners’ needs. This research is under the perspective of Applied Linguistics (LA) for this is a study of language in the Academic realm that promotes changes in the social roles. Regarding the teacher/researcher, having a critical view of his academic practice can help him/her deconstruct automatized actions to reconstruct them later bearing in mind that no academic practice is changeless. As for the students, they have the opportunity to strengthen the agentivity in the academic context. The project is based on the Critical Collaborative Research (CCR). The didactic material designed by the researcher as well as students’ production have been analysed according to enunciative, discursive and linguistic categories (LIBERALI, 2013). Data analysis suggested that working on Social activities the university helps students understand that learning can take place beyond the classroom walls. Learning is connected to the desire to transform possible realities. The refunding of concepts and points of view opens the way to a new teacher, a professional in an unceasing process of transformation but still aware of her social responsibility and eager to transform reality and promote changes

Heterogeneity, social activity types, and loneliness among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

Ji, Yuntong 04 November 2023 (has links)
Loneliness is a critical factor that can significantly affect an individual's health and well-being, especially for older adults. Since they are more vulnerable to suffering life transitions, older people are more likely to experience loneliness than people of younger ages. The fast break out and spread of COVID-19 exacerbated the difficulty of their social connections and intensified their feelings of loneliness. Consequently, effective interventions for the aged, particularly effective ones suited to special occasions, are of vital relevance. Consequently, effective interventions for the aged, particularly effective ones suited to special occasions, are of vital relevance. As one of the widely mentioned and applied gerontology theories, the activity theory has been well-studied previously to elucidate the effectiveness of leisure activity participation in reducing lonely feelings. It is worth noting that no one solution works for everyone. This thesis examines the alleviating roles of four types of social activities on loneliness in older Americans considering individual differences, including marital, job, and physical health background. Sample data is from the 2020 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) survey. This thesis collected respondents over 50 years old and included a sample of 4,506. According to previous studies, control variables include age, gender, race and ethnicity, years of education, and health components (self-rated health and memory, COVID infection, and depressive symptoms). The thesis divides social activities into highly productive-active, moderately productive-active, moderately productive-sedentary and consumptive activity. Through three-group regression analysis, this thesis concludes that: (i) highly productive-active activity was the most practical way to reduce loneliness for vulnerable groups; (ii) moderately productive-active activity had the best utility on the elderly who already maintained good social relationships and health status; (iii) moderately productive-sedentary was the only activity type not useful for all groups. (iv) consumptive activity presents a protective tendency towards older people disadvantaged in work but not towards married and partnered people. Meanwhile, the thesis also proposes other classification methods involving activities' cultural and symbolic meanings. The thesis states that activities with spiritual power could better alleviate the loneliness of vulnerable groups, and the symbolic meaning of daily life activity (routine activity) could protect the elderly from isolated feelings caused by being forced out of society to some extent. The repetitive life patterns keep the elderly from inordinate life and psychological gaps. The contribution of the thesis consists of two aspects. First, the thesis maps leisure activities into a three-dimensional system, divided by practical activity attributes for loneliness. From the process of grouping and categorizing, it is possible to provide a more practical understanding of the social connection. Second, the thesis demonstrates the necessity to consider the diversity of older people. Activities were associated differently with loneliness in groups with distinct characteristics. The thesis found that context discrepancy profoundly affects the effectiveness of interventions.

Drouin, Louise January 2016 (has links)
Abstract : Choir singing is known to be beneficial : this study chose to measure its impacts on elderly people. The quantitative and quasi-experimental design included three groups : the Choir, Hebdo-Bistro (conference workshops), the comparison group, and the Control group. This longitudinal, intergenerational study lasted for three seasons. Cognition (Mattis, 3MS, Trail Making, Numeral WAIS Scale, Formal and Categorical Fluences), humor (Psychological Well-being of American Adults, Geriatric Depression Scale), self-efficacy (Schwartzer), and autonomy (QAF questionnaire) were administered three times (pre, post, 2nd post). In addition, weekly measurements were administered on health related topics (medical consultations, medication, falls) and social participation (activities). The analyses showed no significant differences between groups. However, the intra-group analyses showed a significant improvement for the Choir (3MS, social activities), and a tendency for improvement (Formal Fluence) for the Choir and Hebdo-Bistro groups. The small sample (n =21) excludes any generalization, but the results are promising in today’s aging context.

Developed in a Multicultural Education Project (Projeto Educação Multicultural) created by the language research group known as LACE (Linguagem em Atividades no Contexto Escolar Language in Activities in School Contexts), this investigation about the practice of this researcher-teacher seeks to understand critically the role of affective-cognitive aspects in the participation of teenage students in classes taught in French, held at an institute that promotes several educational activities for underprivileged children and youth. To achieve this goal, the main theoretical axis is rooted in the Theory of Socio-Cultural-Historical Activity as postulated by Vygotsky and Leontiev, according to which the human mind is constituted through a social-cultural-historical process. The methodology adopted was the Critical Collaborative Research, for it conceives that transformation only takes place through active joint participation in the negotiation of senses and meanings. Language is seen here through the perspective of dialogic analysis of discourse, based on the concepts of Bakhtin and the Circle, the analysis of discourse according to Bronckart and conversation analysis as proposed by Kerbrat-Orecchioni. The results indicate a major influence of affective issues in the action of the students in the classroom and also indicate that by experiencing emotionally relevant cognitive experiences (perejivanie), the desire to learn through French became latent. This work made it possible to act in the constitution of the subject in two languages towards their cognitive, affective and cultural development expanding their ways to act in the world in which they live in so they could learn, live, and dream with realities perhaps not yet envisioned / Esta pesquisa está inserida na área da Linguística Aplicada e tem como objetivo investigar o papel da afetividade na atividade de ensino-aprendizagem em Língua Internacional.

Fishification – Visualizing Activity Streams Using the Aquarium Metaphor

Maier, Sonja, Burkhard, Martin, Lachenmaier, Peter, Nutsi, Andrea, Koch, Michael 25 October 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Large screens in semi-public spaces are already used in different organizations for presenting information. To make these information radiators work, the visualization and interaction have to be as attractive and intuitive as possible. In this paper, we present a new way of visualizing social activity streams on semi-public large screens. In order to keep the user interface simple, and to attract people that are passing by, the aquarium metaphor is used. Apart from describing a prototype implementation, the paper elaborates on an evaluation of the prototype.

Ensamhet bland äldre: en 10-årig jämförelse / Loneliness among old adults: a 10 year comparison

Åström, Veronica January 2019 (has links)
Objectives: Aging process may include both physical and mental challenges for the individual. Body and life go through changes and limit the opportunities to participate in social networks in same extent as before. Many elderly experience loneliness, which in previous studies has been shown to have consequences for well-being as for physical and mental health. The objective of this study was to examine some of the factors associated with living conditions in old age (+70); social activity, social support, economy as well as mobility problems and how these can be associated with experiences of loneliness among the elderly. Examined in present ten year comparison is: (a) how the extent of social activities, social support, economy and mobility change over time, (b) how the experience of loneliness in old age change over time and (c) how changes in social activity, social support, economy and mobility during this ten year period affects the experience of loneliness. Material: Data from the 2004 and 2014 waves of the nationally representative Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD), a longitudinal study and database based on the sample of the Swedish level of living survey (LNU) was used (n = 466). Methods: Correlation between 2004 and 2014 loneliness and social activity, social support, economy and mobility was investigated in bivariate analyses and logistic regressions. Relation between loneliness 2014 and changes during 2004-2014 in social activity, social support, economy and mobility were investigated in logistic regression. Results: Social activity, social support and mobility problems were associated with feelings of loneliness in both 2004 and 2014. Social support and mobility were associated with loneliness 2004 but only social support remained significant associated with loneliness when adjusting for gender, age and living alone. Social activity, social support and mobility were significantly associated with loneliness 2014 even when adjusting for gender, age and living alone. Social activity and mobility decreased during the ten year period but only decrease in mobility was significantly associated with loneliness. The results were analyzed in the light of the capability theory. Conclusions: Supportive relationships, participation in social activity and not be hampered by physical disabilities are important aspects to avoid loneliness. The study stresses the importance of the social work and society's responsibility to meet up with capabilities when the individual's own capabilities are declining to provide opportunities to live a dignified and valuable life.

It intends to understand, from the field work, the insertion of the subject of the hemp plantation (criminalized) in the agenda of the Polo Sindical do Subm?dio S?o Francisco. The study intends to understand this phenomenon through a historical retrospection and an analysis about the region understood as a social-political production of territorialities. Also, it develops an attempt of explanation of the crossing between illegal agriculture and the dynamic of syndical struggle for the recovery of the version which the entity produces and legitimates as its biography in order to understand how and by whom the justification of that crossing is built. In this process of sociological undoing of the Hemp Polygon, it is shown how, when and through which means the subject of the illegal cultivation enters the agenda of the entity.
