This study considers questions concerning the spatial and social behaviour, reproduction, population structure and dynamics of the alien North American raccoon (Procyon lotor) in Germany. The investigations took place within the framework of a comprehensive raccoon research project (www.projekt-waschbaer.de) over a period of nearly six years in a close-to-nature lowland beech forest in the Müritz National Park (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania). The National Park has been verifiably colonized by raccoons since the end of the 1970s, and due to its abundance of water and its old deciduous tree population it represents an ideal habitat for this mammal.
Between 2006 and 2011, 145 individual raccoons (62 ♀♀ and 83 ♂♂) were captured, genetically sampled, measured and individually tagged. Sampling took place within a 1,114 hectare area of the National Park, at 53 trap sites and with 489 trappings. 51 adult raccoons (23 ♀♀, 28 ♂♂) and 18 juveniles (10 ♀♀, 8 ♂♂) were also fitted with radio collars and located a total of 31,202 times as part of the telemetric survey (=452 localisations per individual). Camera trap monitoring was carried out at 36 baited locations of the main investigation area (1,628 ha): 18,721 camera trap pictures were taken of 183 different raccoons over a monitorring period of 5,365 nights. 82 % of all the raccoon pictures showed individually tagged ani-mals. All 145 of the trapped raccoons were successfully genotyped as part of a subproject with highly polymorphic microsatellites. Both the familial relationships and the individual reproductive success of the subject animals could be determined with the genotyping results. For the analyses of the population structure, classic morphometric and phenotypical characteristics, as well as the cause of mortality of 120 raccoon carcasses in the immediate vicinity of the National Park, were recorded.

Zirkus Empathico 2.0, A serious game to foster emotional and collaborative skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)Hassan, Ahmed 15 January 2024 (has links)
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a spectrum of developmental abnormalities that result in a lack of social, communicative, and collaborative abilities. Socio-communicative impairments can be improved through behavioral therapist-designed and delivered social-skills training programs.
Computer-based therapies to resolve socio-communicative difficulties in children, adolescents, and adults with ASD have demonstrated encouraging outcomes. The serious game format is one type of intervention. Serious games are educational but often appeal more than overt pedagogical tools.
Zirkus Empathico 2.0 is a multi-player serious game set with various levels and stages in a circus environment. It was evaluated over eight weeks. Sixty children with ASD aged five to eleven years were evaluated before treatment and post-treatment. Primary outcomes included empathy rating by parents and objectively measured emotion recognition abilities. Secondary outcomes were assessed as emotional awareness, emotion management, well-being, and personal therapy goals.
The assessment of the game's effectiveness and usability for social-skills training indicated that it established a plausible learning environment by boosting trial participants' awareness of abilities and neurotypical behavior and decreasing their predicted fear in future social situations.
Following treatment, significant treatment effects were detected. In both short- and long-term assessments, moderate impacts were observed on emotional awareness, emotion management, and autistic social symptomatology. Parents reported that therapy goals were met, and that treatment was transferred well.
Zirkus Empathico 2.0 is successful at improving long-term socio-emotional abilities in real-world situations. Future research should focus on the specific processes behind empathy and emotion recognition's transmission and maintenance benefits.

Parenting styles affecting the behaviour of five-year oldsLatouf, Natacha Carina Duarte Sequeira 29 February 2008 (has links)
The main aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between parenting styles, as used by the pre-school parent and the social behaviour of the five-year old. Specific attention was given to three main parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. The eight developmental perspectives applicable for the five-year old were also discussed.
The research was conducted according to the quantitative approach. The Parental Styles Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) was completed and returned by a sample of 30 parents (N=30) from Evergreen Pre-primary in Gauteng. The representative sample of five-year olds being observed by the teacher were 24 pupils (N=24). The teacher rated the five-year olds' behaviour using the Behavioural Questionnaire (BQ).
These results indicated primarily that the Authoritative Parenting Style was most used by the parents of the five-year old group and that this Parenting Style tends to lead to more acceptable social behaviour among the five-year olds. / Social Work / M. Diac.(Play Therapy)

The nature of truancy and the life world of truants in secondary schoolsMoseki, Monkie Muriel 30 June 2004 (has links)
Truancy is one of the problems that exist in schools and affect learners' performance. The aim of the current study was to determine how truancy manifests and also to explore the life world of truants in secondary schools.
From the literature review, the two types of truancy, namely blanket truancy and post-registration truancy were described. Various programmes and approaches used in truancy intervention were explored.
An empirical investigation was undertaken with a sample of 758 Grade 10 learners from three secondary schools. The results indicated that significantly more males than females engaged in truancy. There is also a significant dependency between learning problems and truancy.
The results of the study were analysed and recommendations for intervention and for further study were made. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Guidance and Counseling)

Implementering van 'n skoolgebaseerde sosial-emosionele program as strategie teen misdaad en geweldVan der Merwe, Petro 06 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / This study, which was undertaken within a qualitative and quantitative methodological framework, is a collaborative action research project that focuses on the impact of emotional intelligence (EI) teaching in the classroom as intervention to prevent the inappropriate behaviour of learners that could lead to violence and crime. The study also concentrates on how action research can enhance the educator’s teaching practices.
The objective was to prevent learners from misbehaving by implementing EI as a teaching strategy in the classroom on the basis of various definitions and models of EI. This research project also explored the coordinated and integrated management of positive learner behaviour, overall school development and the management of a culture of positive behaviour.
The empirical study concludes that there is a correlation between EI teaching methods and learners’ behaviour. In view of the fact that the use of EI in the classroom can prevent the inappropriate behaviour of learners it can therefore be regarded as preventative discipline. / Psychology / M.A. (Sielkunde)

Managing learner misconduct in Ntoane Village secondary schoolsLekganyanye, Seja Annah 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the misconduct of learners in secondary schools in the Ntoane village.
It served to determine the
• extent to which teenage fall pregnant;
• the intensity in which teachers tackle gender violence in schools;
• the manner in which the parents’ culture and values are enforced by the teachers.
Recommendations are made on how to overcome these barriers and to improve the level of misconduct.
A literature study was carried out to gain an understanding of misconduct, and covered the following issues:
• What is misconduct?
• The causes of misconduct.
• An overview of learner misconduct.
• The origins of learner misconduct.
• Manifestations of learner misconduct in the classroom.
• The factors which cause learner misconduct.
A qualitative research method was used in this research. The targeted population groups are teenagers in grades 9 and 10 in the Ntoane village.
v
Interviews were conducted at two schools in the Ntoane village where educators, the school governing bodies and members of the representative council of learners were interviewed.
The findings were discussed at length to determine the research objectives. Conclusions were drawn after analysing these findings, and recommendations were formulated. / Education Management / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Perceptons of staff and students concerning support offered to students the MA (Social Behaviour Studies in HIV/AIDS) at the University of South AfricaMatee, Marie 06 1900 (has links)
The MA Social Behaviour Studies in HIV and AIDS as a postgraduate degree
requires students to work and conduct research independently. The purpose of
the study was to gauge the perceptions, attitudes and experiences of second
year students and key personnel concerning student support. A mixed methods
research design was used. It was found that students and staff regarded support
in a positive light, although concerns about insufficient resources were
expressed. Students expressed needs for specific academic and research
support. Staff tended to romanticise the reasons for students enrolling for the
degree. Possible conflicting expectations of the degree and the amount and type
of support offered were found between the staff and the students and also among
various staff members. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Behaviour Studies in HIV-AIDS)

The Morality of the Black adolescent in a multicultural situationMabena, Esther Ntombana 11 1900 (has links)
This study deals with the problem of moral development discontinuity prevalent
in today's multicultural societies. Black adolescents are confronted by many
obstacles in their situatedness in the home, school and society. It has been
revealed that the black adolescent in the multicultural situation is exploited,
dehumanised and exposed to impersonal situations when he should be offered
moral guidance and challenging moral dilemmas in order to develop his moral
sense, however he is consequently reduced to an object that is tossed to and fro
by his fellow human beings. The black adolescent, it has been shown, needs his
fellow human beings, as transmitters of moral values to help him to achieve a
moral-self.
This study examines the three multicultural situations, the home, the school and
the society and shows that morals are not inherited but acquired through mutual
contact. The acquisition of morals manifests itself under conditions characterised
by respect, modelling, imitation, indoctrination, reward and punishment,
conformity, loyalty, communication, exemplification, socialisation, experience
and learning as determined by the home, school and society. It was also found
that in their acquisition of morals in a multicultural society, black adolescents
experience confusion brought about by the cultural differences of their society.
\\!hat they previously regarded as the right thing to do in their cultural background
receives negative responses in the multicultural situation. It was further found that
black adolescents in a multicultural situation are not provided with sufficient
opportunities to participate meaningfully in moulding their new moral
environment. The multicultural environment is cold and unfriendly, as a result
black adolescents are barred from expanding and anchoring themselves in their
new situation to face the challenges confronting them with confidence.
The empirical research revealed that in the home parents are too busy with their
professional upgrading and the positions they hold at work to bother about the
moral upbringing of their children. In school teachers emphasise scholastic
achievement above moral development. The society does not provide black
adolescents with moral role models to imitate. Society has become to
technocratic, with devices such as the TV, radio, Internet and video games, to
guide black adolescents in their moral intemalisation. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

Hazing of grade 8 boys as part of orientation programmes in South African monastic secondary schools / Hazing of grade eight boys as part of orientation programmes in South African monastic secondary schoolsHuysamer, Carolyn Ann 01 1900 (has links)
Hazing is a universal practice. The process is multi-dimensional and includes both positive and negative aspects. Hazing broadly refers to the negative aspects of what newcomers experience as they integrate into a group. This study focuses on hazing during orientation programmes for Grade 8 boys in monastic secondary schools in South Africa. The problem was investigated by a literature study and a survey using a self-designed questionnaire. It was completed by a non-probability sample of 296 Grade 12 boys from three selected schools in Gauteng Province. Data measured the biographical attributes of respondents and determined their opinions of activities engaged in during the orientation programmes. Findings indicated that respondents were positive about the orientation programme which acts as an introduction into secondary school and is a means whereby traditions are transmitted. Respondents were very opposed to any injurious activity. The objectives of orientation programmes are well-grounded but when they deteriorate into hazing, they are very negatively perceived. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Comparative Education)

Ecology of the bushpig Potamochoerus porcus Linn. 1758 in the Cape Province, South AfricaSeydack, Armin H. W. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD) -- Stellenbosch University, 1990. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT:Bushpig sociology, energetics, reproduction and population dynamics were
studied over an 8-year period in the Cape Province, South Africa. The
social organization was found to be strikingly different from that known
from other suid species. The basic social unit is a unimaternal family
group, occupying a resource-based territority, with a monogamous mating
system. This form of social organisation is related to the dispersed
nature of food resources, to which it provides exclusive access. It is
reminiscent of canid social systems. Agonistic behaviour, communication
and maternal behaviour were studied as the opportunity arose. The
average home range size was 7,2 kmª, ranging from 3,8 to 10.1 kmª. Home
ranges were often traversed within 1-4 days, as part of territory
patrolling. The average diel ranging distance was 3 km. Bushpig were
active during both night and day and exhibited a basic bimodal rhythm.
The main phase of intensive foraging occurred from before dusk to
midnight, with a secondary activity peak after dawn. Activity schedules
were geared to avoid extreme ambient temperatures. Temperature
regulation and water use were investigated, with particular reference to
thermoregulatory behaviour (nest building). pelage characteristics, body
core temperature dynamics, thermoneutral zones and resting metabolic
rates. The thermoneutral zone for 10 kg bushpig juveniles was estimated
to lie between 13° and 30°C and that for adults between 8° and 25°C.
Foraging behaviour, diet and its nutritient content were investigated.
Regional differences in the nutritional quality of bushpig diets in the
Eastern and Southern Cape were associated with the predominance of
nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor substrates respectively. These in turn
were reflected by divergent life history features in the populations
from the two regions. Patterns of growth and energy storage were
described and the value of various parameters (e.g. mass to size ratio,
fat depositions, blood composition) to evaluate condition was
investigated. In studying reproductive biology, sexual maturation,
female reproductive cycles, prenatal litter statistics, foetal
development, 1actation, breeding seasonality and reproductive turnover
were the main aspects addressed. The role of food quality, body
condition and social status in determining reproductive success was
discussed. Bushpig population density estimates in the Southern Cape
ranged between 0,3 and 0,5 animals/kmª• The dynamics of Southern and
Eastern Cape populations were found to differ. The differences are
consistent with the hypothesis that social organisation is determined by
the distribution and availability of food while diet quality shapes
life history tactics. A life history model was developed which links
edaphoclimatic environmental conditions with diet quality, metabolic
turnover rate and, ultimately, life history features. In the concluding
chapter some of the managerial implications of the research findings are
discussed.
Heelwat ooreenkomste is
soos territoria gepatroleer. Die gemiddelde daaglike bewegingsafstand
was 3 km.
Soedoende is temperatuuruiterstes vermy.
Temperatuurregulasie en watergebruikpatrone is bestudeer, insluitend
temperatuurreguleringsgedrag, haarkleedeienskappe, liggaamskerntemperature,
Bosvarkbevolkings in
bloedwaardes. Aspekte van voortplantingsbiologie, soos geslagsrypheid,
vroulike voortplantingssiklusse, voorgeboortelike werpselgroottes,
foetale ontwikkeling, laktasie, seisoenaliteit en voortplantingsomset is
behandel.
