Sociální preference a interakce antilopy losí v období porodů / Social preferences and interactions of common eland during parturition period

Staňková, Helena January 2017 (has links)
Common elands (Taurotragus oryx) belong between the world's biggest antelopes. The basic social unit is created by several females with offspring, males are joining them only in the breeding period. There is a dominance hierarchy in a herd, which eliminates strong negative conflicts mainly between adult females. Except agonistic interactions, affiliative ones are taken place as well, which have positive impact on relationships in a herd. The aim of this work is t o summarize previous studies dealing with social structure and behaviour of common eland focusing on affiliative, maternal and agonistic interaction in a herd. Experimental part is focused on preferences of females for a choice of the closest companion, if the choice is influenced with age, kinship or maternal state of a female. Data were collected through direct observations of a herd of common elands on a farm Lány using 15 min scans of chosen females. Distances were measured between females and all the other herd members. Selected social behaviour of any two members of a herd was recorded using an all occurrence sampling method. The statistical analysis showed that the most (98,77 %) of interactions were negative, females preferred contactless agonistic interactions, threat and withdrawal. Allogrooming was more often found between a...

THE GENETIC AND BEHAVIOURAL UNDERPINNINGS OF NATURAL VARIATION IN SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR / THE GENETIC AND BEHAVIOURAL UNDERPINNINGS OF SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Scott, Andrew M. January 2021 (has links)
A rich diversity of social behaviours exists in the animal kingdom, and these behaviours have evolved to perform a variety of adaptive functions. Social behaviours show variation both among and within species, however the mechanisms that give rise to this variation are not well understood. Using fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), my goal was to uncover the genetic and behavioural mechanisms that underpin natural variation in two different social behaviours: sociability and sexual aggression. First, I showed that sociability, which is the tendency of animals to engage in friendly activities together, is influenced by indirect genetic effects (IGEs), and that encounters among individuals drive these effects (Chapter 2). I then showed that sociability and social plasticity have low-moderate heritability (Chapter 3), and sociability is not correlated between the sexes or with activity. I then generated lineages of flies with high and low sociability using artificial selection (Chapter 4). The evolved lineages had significantly diverged sociability which was not associated with fitness measures or nearest-neighbor distances, but was negatively correlated with intrasexual aggression (Chapter 4). Finally, in sexual aggression, which I quantified as male forced copulation rate, I showed that evolved differences and differences due to social plasticity were both associated with the differential expression of many genes, but only a few of these genes were significant in both (Chapter 5). I also showed that these sets of genes are enriched in neuropeptide hormone and serotonin gene ontology categories, and that 4 of 7 chosen genes were validated for their effects on sexual aggression. Overall, this thesis sheds light on the complex mechanisms that underlie variation in these social behaviours, and it paves the way for future research to further elucidate some of these mechanisms, especially on the genetic basis of sociability using the evolved lineages I generated. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Individual animals tend to vary in many traits including social behaviours. Using fruit flies, my goal was to understand what causes individuals to vary in two social behaviours: sociability and sexual aggression. I found that highly sociable flies tended to influence other flies to become more sociable due to a change in how much these flies interacted. I also found that individual differences in sociability are moderately heritable, and the genetic variation contributing to this is different between the sexes. Also, less sociable flies tended to be more aggressive than highly sociable flies. Finally, for sexual aggression, I showed that variation in a male’s success in forcibly mating with a female was associated with changes in the expression of hundreds of genes, but these changes were mostly unique for evolved versus environmentally induced variation. Future work will similarly look to identify genes involved with individual differences in sociability.

Brottsofferstöd i Östra Norrbotten : Polisens perspektiv

Töyrä, Linnéa January 2013 (has links)
Every day people are exposed to crimes in Sweden, which can lead to both emotional and practical difficulties. Having the opportunity to get support and help after a traumatic incident can reduce the negative consequences of a crime, such as posttraumatic stress disorder and secondary victimization. In many communities in Sweden there are local support services for the crime victims, but in the district of Östra Norrbotten there are no support activities that specifically address this issue. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if the police in Östra Norrbotten feel that they can offer the crime victim sufficient support or refer to such support. Eight police officers in the district were interviewed to learn about their experiences. The results show that the majority of respondents felt that there are gaps in the field they can´t provide the crime victims to a support that they deem as sufficient or refer to such support. The fact that crime victims do not receive support can lead to negative impact on the recovery from all events. /
Validerat; 20130317 (global_studentproject_submitter)

Bring Light to Gaza. An exploration of solar and ecologically-sensitive light programs for the Deir al-Balah refugee camp

Benouaich, Abigail January 2020 (has links)
In Gaza, daily blackouts have lasted for over eleven years. Until recently, Palestinian families have received only four hours of power each day. Since Israel’s withdrawal from the region in 2005, the political discourse around the Right of Return has forced refugees to live in terrible conditions and darkness. The fear was that any transformation of the camps will bring about an integration of the refugee community with the local environment and thus any improvements to Gaza’s infrastructure and housing was seen as a direct erosion of the Right of Return. Can bringing light to Gaza transcend this boundary of temporality and restore hope to this impoverished community? With recent solar lighting ideas emerging to help solve Gaza’s energy shortage by solar energy companies such as SunBox and LittleSun, I plan to develop a solar urban lighting project for Gaza’s smallest refugee camp - Deir al-Balah (DEB) - to help improve security at night for residents and provide the community with opportunities to socialise in public common areas. In response to an ‘Improvement Plan’ conducted by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in 2017, which identifies DEB camp’s limited access to electricity and street lighting, I’d like to explore how a solar and ecologically-sensitive lighting programs can improve Gazan’s daily lives, by bringing clean, reliable and affordable energy access.

Substanzkonsum, Störungen durch Substanzkonsum und begleitende psychische Störungen bei Jugendlichen: Zahlen aus einer Spezialambulanz für Suchterkrankungen

Wiedmann, Melina, Atzendorf, Josefine, Basedow, Lukas Andreas, Roessner, Veit, Golub, Yulia, Kuitunen-Paul, Sören 19 April 2024 (has links)
Objective: Only few clinics offer the outpatient treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs) among adolescents. Therefore, only limited data describe substance use patterns, SUDs, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders characteristic of adolescents who present in such outpatient clinics specialized in the treatment of SUDs. Method: Via interview we collected data from n = 201 patients between 12 and 19 years concerning their substance use, SUDs, and current co-occurring psychiatric disorders. We created descriptive presentation of data regarding use patterns, SUDs, and co-occurring disorders divided by sex and current age. Results: Tobacco (88 %) and cannabis (86 %) were the most frequently used substances. 67 % of all patients presented with more than one SUD, cannabis use disorder being the most prevalent one (84 %). 72 % presented with at least one co-occurring disorder, with conduct disorders (40 %), attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorders (21 %), and depressive disorders (18 %) being the most frequent ones. Conclusions: Adolescent SUD patients often present with co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Institutions for adolescent SUD treatment should also focus on treating co-occurring conduct disorders, depression, and attention deficit disorders.

Belewenis van moeders van ATHV-leerders

Van Wyk, Margaretha Elizabeth 30 June 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of mothers of primary school learners diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The main determinant of parenting stress was contained in the primary symptoms of ADHD, namely, attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour, as well as in the disruptive effects on others in the immediate environment. The three primary symptoms of ADHD as listed above, often result in such secondary problems as learning deficiencies, poor self-image and inadequate social relations. Seven mothers of learners with ADHD were selected to participate in the empirical investigation. A qualitative research model was employed with specific use of a list of questions, participatory perception and unstructured interviews. Results obtained from the empirical research indicated that the symptoms of ADHD as manifested by the learners, as well as the accompanying secondary problems, impacted negatively on the mothers of these learners. / Educational Studies / M. A restorative approach towards school discipline and behavioural conduct in South African schools: a case study

Buys, Irma 09 1900 (has links)
Misconduct, antisocial and offending (criminal) behaviour is becoming a problem in South African schools and maintaining discipline in schools is facing many challenges. Current practices do not solve disciplinary challenges. This study reflects upon the discipline system in South African schools as well as risk factors playing a role in possible offences, by means of a case study. An enormous number of learners are still experiencing difficulties concerning their education because of their disadvantaged position in South Africa. In cases where there are disruptions of the learning process due to ill-discipline and antisocial behaviour, it leads to unsuccessful education in a country where there are already obstacles underlying the foundation of the education system. It is important to have an effective disciplinary system implemented in schools. The discipline system in South African schools, currently, views a learner as an offender, when behaviour is such that it is against the school’s rules. The focus is then on proving the offender guilty and then punishing him/her in order to proof that responsibility is taken by the school for his/her actions. The learner punished, in some cases rebel and this leads to further divergent behaviour. In the current school discipline system, the victim plays no role in the process and the changes needed in the discipline process should include the victim. The discipline process should move from a punitive to a restorative system. In a restorative discipline system, intervention plays an important role. The study also places focus on identifying possible risk behaviour at an early age and explored risk factors that may play a role in the management of discipline related concerns and conduct. This process plays a significant role in the intervention process, as learners can be identified and counselled before offending behaviour takes place or intervention can take place the moment that the learner is involved in deviant behaviour. Dynamic risk factors, for example antisocial friends, antisocial behaviour and lack of respect for authority can be addressed through restorative rather than punitive intervention. This study was also directed to develop a South African theoretical framework to be used by schools and the Department of Education, as an alternative to the current punitive system through the application of restorative practices as a support to troubled learners. / Criminal and Procedural Law

Influence of turbidity on social structure in guppies, Poecilia reticulata

Borner, Karoline 17 October 2016 (has links)
Most species have been subjected to environmental changes during their evolutionary history. However, due to human activity, environmental changes are currently occurring at higher speeds and on a greater scale, presenting new challenges for many species. Pollution, as a major type of human-induced environmental change, may not only affect physiology but also behaviour, thereby affecting population dynamics and consequently biodiversity. The topic of my dissertation is the effect of turbidity from quarrying on the behaviour and social association pattern of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Turbidity impairs the fish’s ability to use visual cues during social interactions, which in turn helps increases efficiency of foraging and avoiding predators. I investigated the initial re-sponse of guppies to turbidity and subsequently tested whether turbidity-experienced vs turbidity-inexperienced populations differ in their social association patterns and how they cope with ecological challenges. Both lab-reared and wild-caught guppies that were inexperienced with turbidity reduced social associations in turbid water in con-trast to turbidity-experienced fish. A Markov chain analysis revealed that lab-reared guppies increased associations with particular neighbours. Similarly, wild-caught gup-pies maintained the number of initiated associations under turbid conditions. The in-crease in non-initiated associations suggests a stronger connectivity within the shoal, leading to higher information transmission in a poor visual environment. Additional results showed that this altered social structure enabled turbidity-experienced fish to maintain the frequency of mating attempts in turbidity and to avoid predation risk. This suggests that guppies have the ability to adjust to turbidity, but with major changes in their social structure, which might have an impact on population dynamics.

Alla är lyckade och lyckliga på Instagram : En retorisk receptionsstudie om hur unga kvinnor upplever och tolkar innehållet som visas på Instagram

Caarp, April January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is that through a rhetorical reception analysis to find out how young women interpret a specific content downloaded from Instagram in the form of four collage containing a total of 24 different images. The collages are based on four hashtags: #home, #breakfast, #happiness and #lifestyle. In this study individual interviews were conducted with five female respondents aged 20 to 24 who are active users of Instagram. The women's own presentation and identity has also been studied to see if the image and the identity that they show on Instagram consistent with the image and identity as they have in the reality. With the help of rhetorical tools and a fund theories of gender, identity , habitus and capital so , this study concluded that the respondents both consciously and unconsciously interpret the material chosen differently depending on which of collages that they have analyzed And that respondents in different ways, choose which side of themselves that they want to display on Instagram where some of the respondents admit that the picture they show of themselves on Instagram match the image they have of themselves everyday. While some of the respondents admit that they are more daring, and become more personal on Instagram than they are in real life. /
Validerat; 20160607 (global_studentproject_submitter)
