What helps self-control? Social relationship characteristics and self-control

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Researchers have found inconsistent effects (negative or positive) of social relationships on self-control capacity. The variation of findings may depend on the aspects of social relationships. In this study, rather than examining overall social relationships and self-control, characteristics in social relationships were clearly defined, including social support, social connection and social conflict, to determine their specific effects on self-control. An online survey study was conducted, and 292 college students filled out the survey. For data analysis, path analysis was utilized to examined the direct effect and indirect effect from social relationships to self-control. Results showed social connection and social conflict may indirectly associate with self-control through stress, but social support does not. It may suggest, in traditional stress buffering model, it is the social connection in social support that really reduce the stress. Concerning the direct effects, social support and social connection were significantly associated with self-control directly, but social conflict does not. This result may support the Social Baseline Theory that positive social relationships have direct regulating effects. Results are good for guidance of experimental manipulation of social relationships in study of social influences of self-control. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Psychology 2012

Preserving the Democratic Governance: An Analysis of the Conflict Resolution Offices (2000-2014) / Preservando la gobernabilidad democrática: Un análisis de las Oficinas de Resolución de Conflictos 2000-2014

Orellana, Andrea January 2015 (has links)

A social-scientific key to Paul's letter to the Galatians : an alternative to opponent hypotheses as a cypher key

Craffert, Pieter F. 06 1900 (has links)
Opposition to Paul as central to the occasion of the letter to the Galatians ·(expressed in scholarly circles in terms of different opponent hypotheses) is identified as a pivotal factor in the interpretation of that letter. An analysis of some of the received opponent hypotheses reveals that today, as throughout the history of the critical interpretation of the letter, they are basically different proposals sharing the same historical and methodological components. Both components are critically examined and it is suggested that inadequate assumptions lead to an anachronistic and ethnocentric view of the nature of the conflict and consequently, from a his torical point of view, a distorted cypher key to the interpretation of the letter. The proposal of a social-scientific approach to the letter presents, at the meth odological level, the components of an alternative cypher key. It attempts to be interdisciplinary in that it accounts for the otherness of foreign cultures and distant historical eras in an integrated and explicit way. Because of the methodological components an alternative set of historical com ponents can be suggested. A focus on contemporary views on first-century Judaism and the expansion of the Pauline communities in the first-century world not only . points to shortcomings in the received views but provides an alternative perspective on the communicative context of the letter. A first but important step is taken to construct a probable first-century Mediterranean communicative context for the interpretation of the letter. In view of this alternative communicative context it is possible to redefine the con flict as a truly first-century Mediterranean one in which Paul's authority and honour were at stake. This makes it possible to construe the text in a different way. Instead of regarding the letter to the Galatians as a document of intra-Christian struggle about conflicting theological or doctrinal convictions, it is suggested that the letter be construed as the product of Paul's missionary endeavour within the household setting, the subculture of first-century Judaism, and the confines of orality and reli gion in the first-century world. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / D. Compliance management of the agreements derived from social conflicts: a model of analysis of public management and public policy / Gestión del cumplimiento de los acuerdos derivados de los conflictos sociales: un modelo de análisis desde la gestión pública y las políticas públicas

Balbuena Palacios, Patricia, Ramos Timaná, Gabriel 12 April 2018 (has links)
Since the 21st century, in Peru, there has been an increase in social conflicts, mainly socio-environmental, linked to the growth of the extractive industry due to the boom in commodities. fte foregoing demonstrates a paradox between economic growth and governability that, in some cases, has resulted in episodes of extreme violence. In this scenario, the Peruvian State has developed important reforms and various tools for the management of social conflictivity through dialogue. However, the constant failure to comply with the agreements derived from the dialogue has generated the questioning of the various mechanisms. fte purpose of this article is to propose a model of analysis to study compliance with the agreements derived from the dialogue and suggest manners to improve them. fte data were recorded through tools like the bibliographic review, documental and semi-structured interviews. fte research concludes that the political content is fundamental for consensus, but its viability will depend on the technical implementation of the agreements and the promises reached. To this aim, it is proposed to explain the difficulties in the compliance management of the agreements based on three levels of analysis: a) state capacities; b) internal management of the agreement; and, c) governmental coordination. Exploratory hypotheses are being outlined for future research.

Para além da apreciação da Flaskô no cenário contemporâneo, a dissertação analisa o sentido da forma cooperativa e sua reconfiguração em controle operário, sob os auspícios dos trabalhadores da Flaskô / Abstract: This thesis aims to analyse and understand what occurs in Flaskô, a failed factory whose production's management is under the responsibility of the own factory's workers. This situation can be considered relatively common, for it is usual that workers take over the control of the failed factories and organize a cooperative. Nevertheless, in this case that situation did not happen, for the workers started to revindicate the factory's statization when they retook the production. In this way this research tries to study the workers' quotidian in the factory and in their revindications. In this case it is our aim to understand the meaning of this situation in the context in which occur the process of privatization in Brazil, the State's reforms, the exponential increase of unemployment and other phenomens of productive restructuration in this country. Beyond the study of the Flaskô in the contemporaneous scenery, the thesis analyses the meaning of the cooperative form and its reconfiguration at the working class control / Mestrado / Sociologia do Trabalho / Mestre em Sociologia

A avenida de mil vias: conflito, contradição e ambivalência na modernização de São Paulo (1890-1920) / The avenue of thousand ways: conflict, contradiction and ambivalence in the modernization of São Paulo (1890-1920)

Pedro Beresin Schleder Ferreira 27 April 2017 (has links)
This work aims at establishing consensus and establishing interpretations for the \"making\" of the city of São Paulo based on the consideration of the multiple dynamics, relationships, strategies, confluences and disputes that were articulated by the wide range of agents involved in this imbricated process. No wonder we chose Avenida Angelica, from the 1890s to the 1920s, as an object. Under it historiography has a monolithic image, which reiterates the explanation of the modernization of Sao Paulo as the full and triumphant victory of a consensual project of the elites. Thus, it is a privileged stage to observe the tensions, fissures and incongruities hidden by this constructed homogeneity and to take steps towards other possible explanatory paths. To do so, we used a vast documentary corpus that allowed us to penetrate into various scopes and dimensions of the process of consolidation and experience of the Avenue. Through the city councils, requests for works, newspapers and cartographies, we enter into its space-time from four perspectives: the agitations of its land and real estate market, the conflicts in the establishment of constructive regulations, the ambivalent experiences and expectations before it\'s \"progress\", and the multiple social, material, and economic relationships involved in the ground of his daily life. Through these we discovered that there, side by side with the exhibition and segregative yearnings of the elites and the state, they inhabited the streets, fought for their strategies and rights, developed their lives, and erected their residences, the most diverse members of the middle and City workers. We realized that the groups and classes were not watertight, but homogeneous and heterogeneous, fraternal and competitive, all at once. This was because the interests, public and private, of its members, were of the elites or of the lesser ones, varied according to the circumstances. These oscillations in yearnings and conjunctures made the \"making-up\" of the Avenue a dynamic mosaic of frontiers. Multidimensional thresholds, which were intersected by the universes of social, material and symbolic relations. Far from forming \"walls\", the boundaries were changing and of varying consistency. When porous, they formed spaces of association and negotiation among agents. When closed, conflicts, disputes, and tensions became thresholds. At their edges, encounters and disagreements formed a restless, plural and unstable \"making itself\". Far from being full, Angelica was a crossroads, where the desires, tactics and practices of the wide and varied range of its inhabitants were found, forming an ambivalent, plural, overlapping modernization. Rather than univocal and straight, it was an avenue of thousand strained and interspersed streets.
