The personal contexts of undergraduate students in social work at UNISALintvelt, Rulene Annemie 11 1900 (has links)
The Department of Social Work at UNISA places the emphasis on developmental social work and trains students according to the Person Centred Approach which emphasises the uniqueness of each client. The question thus arises if this Department is indeed working with their students in a person-centred way, and if students think the Department lives out a person-centred philosophy. Exploring the personal contexts of students would give the Department of Social Work the oppor-tunity to try and find a fit between the personal contexts of students and the national requirements of training.
From a population of 114 fourth level students in Social Work at UNISA, a self-selected sample of 79% emerged. Focus is placed on the students' perceptions of following five areas: (1) the self, (2) family life and family of origin, (3) living and study conditions, (4) UNISA and social work training, (5) social work as future career. / Social Work / M.A. Social Science (Mental Health)

Ubuntu in action : towards the empowerment of state-appointed social workers in the Limpopo ProvinceMarch, Charmaigne Caroline January 2010 (has links)
Poverty, violence, unemployment, the high rate of HIV/Aids and a lack of resources are some of the issues the South African government is currently trying to address. Victims of crime and violence have special needs that require early intervention. Studies show that if left unattended, victims may show maladjustment in their social, marital and work environments; receiving assistance and support following victimisation therefore holds many benefits for the victim. The Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) announced by government as part of the National Crime Prevention Strategy is meant to address these needs. The VEP is a comprehensive, multifaceted, intersectoral model that brings together integrated service delivery for victims of crime and violence. One of the mandates of the Department of Social Development as the lead department of the VEP is to provide services that empower and meet the needs of communities and individuals who are considered victims.
This study seeks to justify why it is beneficial to use a participatory learning approach when designing and conducting „in-service‟ continuing professional development training courses for state-appointed social workers working within the field of victim empowerment (VE) in South Africa. It also advocates for the theoretical approaches of experiential problem-based learning and psychosocial empowerment, and discusses the use of a crossover of theories from the different disciplines of mainstream psychology, community psychology and social work.
The vision of a new South Africa based on post-1994 ANC government policies is outlined and the history of the field of socio-economic development and community development is discussed. Mainstream psychology‟s contribution to community development, and the tenets of community psychology, participation and empowerment, are applied in the design of an „in-service‟ short course.
The primary focus of the study is on the range of skills and abilities needed to initiate and maintain successful VE services. These include the following: skills in group process facilitation; skills in intersectoral collaboration (referral and networking) with other governmental departments and other healthcare professionals; knowing how to establish and maintain forums; an understanding of the principles and tools of participatory learning and action; skills required for designing, organising and
presenting workshops; project management, and the monitoring and evaluation of VE projects.
This study elucidates how critical the „in-service‟ training of VE social workers is within the new social development paradigm in South Africa, and offers key considerations and recommendations regarding future „in-service‟ training programmes/short courses for state-employed social workers involved in VE services. / Psychology / D. Teenage pregnancies are currently a social problem in South Africa and in the
rest of the world. Social workers are involved with teenage girls by providing
guidance during their pregnancies and face many challenges by accepting this
role. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify and describe the
needs of social workers when guiding pregnant teenage girls. A conceptual
framework with the Gestalt approach as the theoretical framework for the study
was stated after which an empirical study took place. In-depth interviews took
place with nine social workers. Results were then verified in a focus group
discussion. From the empirical data themes and sub themes were identified and
verified with relevant literature. These themes and sub themes were then
interpreted through the Gestalt approach. Conclusions and recommendations
were made to social workers and interdisciplinary teams, which form part of the

A quasi-experimental design was used with the group work programme as the independent variable and the general contentment and degree of empowerment of the group members as the dependent variables. Only the pilot study group and the two experimental groups were exposed to the programme, while the two control groups were not. Pre- and posttests were taken of all the group members to gather quantitative data. Qualitative data was gathered by means of participant observation and purposeful conversation. The most important difference between the different groups was that action was taken by the groups subjected to the programme, whereas the control groups remained passive. Participatory community development : a networking approachPistorius, Anna Gertruida 10 1900 (has links)
This thesis is an account of how a networking approach may assist participatory community
development.
The author undertakes naturalistic action research into how she can improve her social practice
with a view to gaining equal participation amongst university and community members in a
community development practicum.
She describes how efforts to maximize group participation are typically countered with various
forms of non-participation, analogous to a rebellion against authoritarianism. Dialogue with her doctoral peer group about tacit meanings from her personal history reveals that
she is too heavily invested in community involvement. A stance of irreverence gives her the
freedom to realize that her politically correct approach is conveying the message that "MY way
of participation is THE way". She embarks on a networking programme of action in the hope of
achieving more balanced participation. A multidisciplinary workshop and a study tour show her that openness to multiple inputs may
free people from restrictive views and problematic styles of participation. She initiates the
formation of a local network and finds that this is a more free-flowing structure that encourages
fluid problem solving among community, government and university participants. The author's original anxieties are, however, revived when networking, too, becomes entangled
in organizational complexities. She eventually realizes that she tends to base her actions on
premises of power and justice and that it may be helpful to base new ventures on information
flow and creativity instead. Her new approach to group facilitation elicits creative inputs from others. She finds that
deliberate debate of the assumptions on which collective undertakings are based releases an
awareness of alternative approaches to addressing unequal resource utilization in the commons. A review of the local Network's development over six years draws attention to networking
resources, and its uses, structuring and management. The author's experiences continuously
demonstrate that the assumptions of independence and freedom of choice may provide a more

A study of the relevant theoretical concepts and
empirical research was undertaken to explore the role
of the social worker pertaining to the problem of
epilepsy in the black community of Mamelodi.
The sample comprised 40 families in which there was a
person with epilepsy. Data were obtained through an
interview schedule administered by the researcher.
The literature study highlighted the phenomenon
epilepsy, causes of epilepsy/ psychosocial effects of
epilepsy on the epileptic and his family and the
treatment of the epileptic. However/ it became quite
clear that a multi-disciplinary team approach is
vital importance in the treatment of an epileptic
Furthermore/ significant others like traditional healers, faith healers, priests, relatives and friends were identified as some of the important informal support systems.
Although the findings of study cannot be generalised to the entire population they can be of great

Die literatuurstudie beklemtoon die volgende: die
verskynsel van epilepsie, oorsake van epilepsie,
psigososiale gevolge van epilepsie op die per soon met
epilepsie en sy gesin en die behandeling van die
epileptikus. Dit het egter duidelik na vore gekom dat
'n multi-dissiplinere spanbenadering van die uiterste
belang is in die behandeling van die epilepsielyer.
Dit het ook duidelik geword dat betekenisvolle ander
persone soos tradisionele genesers, geloofsgenesers
priesters, familie en vriende van die mees belangrike
steunstelsels is.
Alhoewel bevindinge van die studie nie veralgemeen kan
word en van toepassing gemaak kan word op die bevolking
as geheel nie, kan dit egter van groot belang vir

social skills program can effectively be implemented by social
workers in a prison. A control- and experimental group were used in a quasiexperimental design. The respondents were twenty-four white,
male, sentenced prisoners in Pretoria Central Prison. The Heimler scale for social functioning and the Hudson-scale for family relations are the standard questionnaires, which were utilised to measure results during the pre-testing and post-testing phase. All twenty-four respondents completed the scales during the pre- and post-testing phase. The Wilcoxon t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test were used for
statistical purposes. A computer was used to process data. Both measurement scales confirmed positive results. The independent variable, that is, the personal and social skills program had an effect in the desired direction on respondents in the experimental group. The Hudson-scale for interpersonal relationships, however, showed more dramatic results. The results for the control group, showed noticeable decline in both social functioning of the respondents as well as experience of family relationships. / Die doel van hierdie navorsing is om te bepaal of maatskaplike werkers in 'n gevangenis 'n persoonlike en sosiale vaardigheidsprogram effektief kan implementeer. 'n Kontrole- en eksperimentele groep was benut in die uitvoering van 'n kwasi-eksperimentele ontwerp. Die proefpersone was vier-entwintig Blanke, manlike gevangenes te Pretoria-Sentraal Gevangenis. Die Heimler-skaal vir maatskaplike funksionering en die Hudsonskaal vir gesinsverhoudinge was die gestandardiseerde vraelyste, wat gebruik is om die resultate tydens voor- en na-toetsing. The differences in assumptions of personnel in a welfare organisation are investigated
through observation of changing processes of thinking that evolved over a period of
time. The process of change is discussed by way of a case study.
Recognition is given to the systemic orientation where the interactive interrelatedness
of elements within the system evolved within changing patterns of thinking. The living
system and characteristics of autonomy, autopoiesis, organisation and structure are
discussed from a philosophy of constructivism. From this philosophy evolved a process
in which realities were created, consensus was reached within the system, and the
