Prestasiebeoordeling as funksie van maatskaplikewerksupervisieAbrahams, Edith Elizabeth 03 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Performance management and performance appraisal plays a crucial role in developing human resources.
In the social work profession the social work supervisor is the person responsible to appraise the performance of the social worker because of the excellent position to observe the job performance directly and consistently.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how social work supervisors perform their supervisory functions and apply performance appraisal. The researcher used qualitative research for an exploratory and descriptive study. In-depth interviews were use as data collection method. The sample group was social work supervisors in the employment of the Western Cape Department of Social Development.
Performance appraisal can be use to encourage professional growth and development of social workers. Performance appraisal is a supervisory duty and thus a component of administrative, educational and supportive supervision. It seems however that supervisors experience problems with performing supervision and to apply performance appraisal. / Thesis (M.A. (Maatskaplike Werk))

maatskaplikewerkorganisasies verkry.
verminder en/of te voorkom / This study attempts to gain insight into the occupational mobility of social workers. In
order to achieve this, an· extensive literature study was undertaken and the nature of
occupational mobility, factors that could affect the occupational mobility of social workers
and the consequences thereof on the delivery of social work, the social worker and the social
work organisation were explored and described.
Secondly, an empirical study was undertaken and information on the research topic was
obtained from social workers and social work organisations through postal questionnaires as
data gathering instruments.
The empirical study indicated that social workers are mostly exposed to unrealistically
high role demands in the work situation and in their personal lives and that the
environments in which they figure, such as the work and personal environments, are often
experienced as unfriendly and that these hinder a stable labour force.
Factors related to the working conditions as well as to the personal situations of social
workers contribute to the occupational mobility of social workers while transfers and
promotions also play a part in the work turnover of social workers. Interaction and mutual
influencing between the various factors take place constantly.
It is concluded that occupational mobility is the result of the social workers' efforts to
bring about a harmony between role and environmental pressures.
With regard to the work turnover of social workers, it was found that the delivery of social
work service, the social worker and the social work organisation are affected positively and
negatively when social workers change jobs or cease to perform professional work.
The study was able to pinpoint trends and this can contribute to the development of a
theory on the occupational mobility of social workers.
Recommendations were made to reduce and/or prevent the occupational mobility of social
workers / Social Work / D. Phil. (Maatskaplike Werk)

Prestasiebeoordeling van maatskaplike werkers in welsynsorganisasiesLouw, Karen Louise 11 1900 (has links)
maatskaplike werkers en maatskaplikewerkbestuurders baat vind by prestasiebeoordeling.
gemaak. / Performance appraisal is critical to the effective management of a welfare organisation. Performance
appraisal of social workers are often neglected, implemented incorrectly or regarded within a negative
light.
This exploratory/ descriptive study aims to set scientifically grounded guidelines for the implementation
of performance appraisal with regard to social workers. The aim is not to provide
comprehensive guidelines regarding every aspect of perforance appraisal, but to identify gaps and
problems which may be studied in future research.
Through questionnaires the perceptions of performance appraisal by 38 social workers and four
social work managers were tested and described.
It seemed that performance appraisal of social workers is geared towards development, and that
social workers and social work managers do benefit from performance appraisal. Social workers
were of the opinion that performance appraisal should be employed to identify gaps and development
areas in equipping social workers professionally.

The experiences and perceptions of social workers on the provision of family preservation services in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan, Gauteng ProvinceNhedzi, Felistas 11 1900 (has links)
Many South African families are beset by social, psychological and economic challenges placing children at risk. Family preservation services, capitalising on families’ strengths to resolve their problems, are crucial to avoid the removal of children from their homes.
Using a qualitative approach, this study reveals the experiences and perceptions of twelve social workers providing family preservation services in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan of Gauteng Province. These social workers articulate their understanding of and experiences with the Children’s Act (Act No. 38) of 2005. They are generally optimistic that family preservation services can offer a helping process with the potential to improve family functioning.
Nevertheless, there are stumbling blocks to effective service delivery, such as the kinds of social problems experienced by families, lack of funding, high caseloads, lack of resources and little co-operation from other disciplines and agencies. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for practice, policy and further research. / Social Work / M. A. (Social Work)

Die voorkoming van organisasieverwante stres by maatskaplike werkers deur maatskaplikewerkbestuurder / The prevention of organisation-related stress amongst social workers by social work managersNortjé, Vasti 02 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans, with abstract and title in Afrikaans and English / Organisasieverwante stres onder maatskaplike werkers is ‘n internasionale verskynsel (Shweta & Siebert, 2007).
• Alle maatskaplikewerkbestuurders wat by regerings- of nie-regeringsorganisasies werksaam is.
• Alle maatskaplike werkers wat by regerings- of nie-regeringsorganisasies werksaam is.
The goal of this research was to explore and describe the nature of prevention of organisation-related stress among social workers through primary intervention strategies by social work managers to develop a prevention guideline. The qualitative research approach, together with the case study, contextual, explorative and descriptive research designs were used in the study. The two populations included a) all social work managers and b) all social workers that work for government or non-government organisations. Samples from the populations were obtained through the non-probability sampling method and the purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Tesch’s framework for qualitative research analysis supported the researcher to identify themes and sub-themes, while Guba’s model was used to assist with the verification of qualitative data. The empirical findings provided the foundation for the development of a prevention guideline. / Department of Social Work / Ph. D. (Social Work)

Social workers’ perceptions of their roles and responsibilities in working with children sentenced to compulsory residenceSpandiel, Yvonne 06 March 2019 (has links)
This study aimed to explore and describe the role perceptions of social workers working with children who have been sentenced to compulsory residence due to being in conflict with the law. Exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research designs were applied in using a qualitative research approach. The researcher collected the data using semi-structured
interviews with all the social workers working with children sentenced to compulsory
residence at Bosasa Child & Youth Care Centres. The data analysis was done using the eight steps identified by Tesch (in Creswell, 2014:198). The data verification was accomplished using Guba’s model (in Krefting, 1990:214-220). The research study provided valuable conclusions and recommendations to different role-players who have an interest in the role of social workers working with children sentenced to compulsory residence. The findings indicated the importance of regular training for social workers who work with children sentenced to compulsory residence to help children to deal with risk factors that may increase the probability of offences occurring. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science, Social Work)

The collaborative role of social workers and homeless people in addressing street homelessnessMahlangu, Timson 12 1900 (has links)
Homelessness is an increasing social challenge both locally and globally. Social problems associated with street homelessness and services provided to homeless people by social workers are well documented in South Africa. Little is known though concerning the collaborative role of social workers and homeless people in addressing street homelessness. This study explored the role of social workers in promoting social justice through a collaborative purpose amongst the homeless people in addressing street homelessness. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive, and contextual study was undertaken with 14 homeless participants aged 21 to 63, and eight social work participants aged 25 to 38. This study was informed by an amalgamation of two theories, indicating the collaboration theory and the structural theory. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, analysed by following Tesch’s eight steps (Creswell, 2009:186). The data was collected and verified, employing the Lincoln and Guba’s model of trustworthiness. The ethical considerations adhered throughout this study are informed consent, confidentiality and anonymity, management of information and debriefing. The major findings identified first, poverty and unemployment as major homelessness causes. Second, deprived, or non-existing family support, family or marital breakdown, substance use, migration of individuals from rural or foreign countries to city centres, as major contributing factors towards homelessness. Third, homeless people are more vulnerable to personal harm than the housed population. Fourth, the society and derogatory labels, such as crazy, nyaopes, and criminals are often used to describe these individuals. Finally, homelessness places homeless people at substantial risk of elevated mental health conditions. Implications for social work and recommendations for future research are presented. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

Experiences and challenges of witnesses in the witness protection programme in South Africa : guidelines for coordinated service delivery developed from a social work perspectiveMphaphuli, Lucy Nthepa 11 1900 (has links)
Modern society is increasingly threatened by organised crime. Crime undermines democracy and causes harm to the general functioning of a country and the quality of life of its citizens. A lack of protection measures for witnesses of crime renders the criminal justice system weak and ineffective in its quest to fight crime.
Witness protection programmes and the testimony of a witness play a pivotal role in the fight against organised crime, without which securing successful prosecutions becomes a daunting task. Despite the important role of witnesses in the criminal justice system, there seems to be a dearth of literature focusing on the experiences of witnesses within the South African context.
The researcher was able to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences, challenges, and coping strategies of witnesses by employing an instrumental case study design within the framework of exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research from the vantage point of witnesses and staff members in the witness protection programme in South Africa. A total number of 30 participants were recruited by means of purposive sampling. Data was collected through individual,
face-to-face interviews undertaken in six provinces. Analysis of the data was conducted in line with the eight steps of data analysis proposed by Tesch (in Creswell 2009:186) and Guba’s principles of trustworthiness were employed in the verification of the data. The ethical principles of informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity, beneficence, data management, and debriefing were observed. This study drew from Caplan’s (1964) crisis theory and the coping theory by Lazarus
(1993).
The findings of this study revealed that there is a general lack of awareness among the communities and members of the criminal justice system about the existence of the witness protection programme in South Africa. Witnesses also expressed that they found it difficult to cope and adjust in the programme, because of challenges
such as social uprooting and isolation. While some witnesses were able to adjust, some resorted to exiting the programme prematurely. Suggestions by participants towards the support of witnesses paved a foundation for the development of guidelines for coordinated service delivery in the South African Witness Protection Programme. / Social Work / D.
