Determinants Of Eurozone Bond Yields During The Sovereign Debt CrisisLimandibhratha, Steven 01 January 2014 (has links)
This paper looks at the determinants of bond yields for a select group of Eurozone countries, during the European sovereign debt crisis. In addition to traditional determinants of spreads, which include credit risk, liquidity risk and international risk aversion, this paper looks at the role of credit rating agencies. The movements of countries’ yields during the debt crisis played an integral role in the resulting bailouts by the European Union. Using expected data published by the European Commission, the results of the model were in line with current literature, with the exception of the effect of budget deficits. One interpretation of the conflicting results is that during a debt crisis what market participants care about is growth, not austerity. Including the effect of credit ratings showed that credit ratings have high predictive power.

Does international and national legislation protect effectively the investors' rights in public securities of the state in case of insolvency?Petkevičiūtė, Dovilė 19 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / This Master‘s thesis is dedicated to the analysis of investor protection mechanisms in case of state insolvency. The classic notion of state immunity provides that a state is the sovereign that is immune from judicial proceedings. However, Lithuania as well as other states waive the sovereign immunity and participate in financial markets as equal entities. Contractual relationship forms between a state and an investor who has purchased debt securities issued by the state. An investor who invests into the state securities and participates in the financial market shall be entitled to special protection, as he remains the weaker party to the relations in any case. The thesis has analysed interpretation of the notion of sovereign insolvency in international law; however, no such notion has been found. The research has shown that this notion is construed as a state’s incapacity to comply with its financial liabilities.
Thus, according to the world’s practice, if a state has become insolvent, it is incapable of complying with the assumed financial liabilities to its creditors, i.e. high profile foreign and local banks and investors holding bonds or other debt securities of the state. Key factors determining a state’s resolution to proclaim own insolvency are excessive indebtedness of the state, slow economic growth. State’s insolvency and incapacity to comply with the assumed liabilities as well as debt restructuring have negative effects on financial markets, given that the... [to full text]

Analýza vzájemné závislosti výnosů z vládních dluhopisů v EU / Time-scale analysis of sovereign bonds market co-movement in the EUŠmolík, Filip January 2014 (has links)
The thesis analyses co-movement of 10Y sovereign bond yields of 11 EU mem- bers (Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark) divided into the three groups (the Core of the Eurozone, the Periphery of the Eurozone, the states outside the Eurozone). In the center of attention are changes of co-movement in the crisis period, especially near the two significant dates - the fall of Lehman Brothers (15.9.2008) and the day, when increase of Greek public deficit was announced (20.10.2009). Main contribution of the thesis is usage of alternative methodol- ogy - wavelet transformation. It allows to research how co-movement changes across scales (frequencies) and through time. Wavelet coherence is used as well as wavelet bivariate and multiple correlation. The thesis brings three main findings: (1) co-movement significantly decreased in the crisis period, but the results differ in the groups, (2) co-movement significantly differs across scales, but its heterogeneity decreased in the crisis period, (3) near to the examined dates sharp and significant decrease of wavelet correlation was observable across lower scales in some states. Ratingové agetury a jejich dopad na ceny dluhopisů v EU / Credit rating agencies and their impact on the bond markets of EU countriesHavlíček, Tomáš January 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyses long and short-term perception of announcements issued by leading credit rating agencies (Fitch, Moody's and S&P) in sovereign bond markets. Using three empirical approaches we assess the nature of impact of CRAs on 10Y sovereign bond yields and 5Y CDS of 24 countries of EU between 2002 and 2012. We find significant response of sovereign bond yield and CDS spreads to downgrades and negative outlooks. Furthermore there is evidence of anticipative power of sovereign bond markets in foreseeing negative events implying CRAs lag the market. The spillover effect from credit rating announcements has been revealed between both EMU and non-EMU parts of EU implying the financial integration is not limited only to countries with common currency. Well performing economies outside EMU are resistant to contagion. / This study aims to estimate the effects of the recent economic crisis on the sovereign bonds spreads of emerging countries. The results support the view that the current financial crisis had a significant impact on the perception of emerging country risk, raising their risk premium. The economic growth rate, real exchange rate, international reserves, domestic and foreign debt and VIX also significantly affected the sovereign spreads. In addition, we also demonstrate that the perception of the Brazilian risk was less affected by the crisis than the remaining emerging countries.

About the determinants of sovereign bond yields a panel data study for emerging marketsCezarini, Victor Magalhães 30 September 2016 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyze the influence that internal fundamentals and external factors have on long-term sovereign bond yields in emerging markets. The database covers 13 countries over 33 quarters between 2006 and 2014. The methodology addresses the latest techniques to deal with macro panels, such as panel unit root and panel cointegration tests. The estimated model is the Pooled Mean Group developed by Pesaran, Shin e Smith (1999). This model can separate the variables that affect the interest rate equilibrium from the ones that only have an effect in the short-run. In the best specification presented, the results indicates that in the short-run the variables that affects the interest rates in emerging markets are the risk free interest rate (+0.3), the short term interest rate (+0.4) and the American government deficit (+0.1). The variables that affects the equilibrium level are the risk free interest rate (+0.5), risk aversion (+0.1), current account balance (-0.3), inflation (+0.1), trade openness (-0.04) and gross debt (non-linear positive effect). Finally, by examining only the Brazilian case, our model indicates that if the country had maintained the internal fundamentals in line with the average of other emerging markets since the end of 2006, Brazil would reach the end of 2014 with a long-term interest rate of 6.1%, 6 p.p. below the actual value of 12.1%.

Previous issue date: 2015-08-25 / In this study, we consider an economy where the determination of fiscal and monetary policies are subject to the budget constraint of the government, seen as a consolidated agent that incorporates the executive and the central bank. We study how changes in the growth rate and composition of government liabilities (currency and governmental bonds) affect prices, interest rates, and economic activity. We are particularly interested in analyzing how these effects are affected by changes in the relative liquidity of government bonds. A central result of this work is that increases in the degree of liquidity of government bonds positively affect economic activity and the financing of public debt. We describe this last aspect with an example reflecting the case of the Brazilian economy.

This thesis focuses on some critical issues of the access to international financial markets in developing and emerging market economies. The first part provides a general overview of the macroeconomic consequences of one of the most market-friendly monetary policy regime—inflation targeting—using a meta-regression analysis framework. The second part analyses government bond market risk and stability. The last part investigates the disciplining effects of government bond market participation—bond vigilantes. In Chapter 1, the results indicate that the literature of the macroeconomic effects of inflation targeting adoption is subject to publication bias. After purging the publication bias, the true effect of inflation targeting appears to be statistically and economically meaningful both on the level of inflation and the volatility of economic growth, but not statistically significant on inflation volatility or real GDP growth. Third, differences in the impact of inflation targeting found in primary studies can be explained by differences in studies characteristics including the sample characteristics, the empirical identification strategies, the choice of the control variables, inflation targeting implementation parameters, as well as the study period and some parameters related to the publication process. Chapter 2 shows that the adoption of inflation targeting regime reduces sovereign debt risk in emerging countries. However, this relative advantage of inflation targeting—compared to money or exchange rate targeting—varies systematically depending on the business cycle, the fiscal policy stance, the level of development, and the duration of countries’ experience with inflation targeting. Chapter 3 shows that remittances inflows significantly reduce bond spreads, whereas development aid does not. It also highlights that the effect of remittances on spreads arises in a regimes of lower developed financial system, higher degree of trade openness, lower fiscal space, and exclusively in non-remittances dependent regimes. Chapter 4 indicates that countries with credit default swaps contracts on their debts have a higher probability of experiencing a debt crisis, compared to countries without credit default swaps contracts. It also finds that the impact of credit default swaps initiation is sensitive to several structural characteristics including the level of economic development, the country creditworthiness at the timing of credit default swaps introduction, the public sector transparency, the central bank independence; and to the duration of countries’ experiences with credit default swaps transactions. Chapter 5 shows that bond markets participation encourages government in developing countries to increase their domestic tax revenue mobilization. Finally, it finds that bond markets participation improves the mobilization of internal taxes, compared to tax on international trade, and reduces their instability. Chapter 6 shows that the presence of domestic bond markets significantly reduces financial dollarization in domestic bond markets countries. This effect is larger for inflation targeting countries compared to non-inflation targeting countries, is apparent exclusively in a non-pegged exchange rate regime, and is larger when there is a fiscal rule that constrains the conduct of fiscal policy. Finally, it finds that the induced drop in inflation rate and its variability, nominal exchange rate variability, and seigniorage revenue are potential transmission mechanisms through which the presence of domestic bond markets reduces financial dollarization in domestic bond markets countries.

歐洲已開發市場之信用違約交換與信用價差動態關係與變化影響因子 / Dynamic relation of credit default swap and bond credit spread on developed European sovereign bonds黃嘉東, Whang, Jia Tung Unknown Date (has links)
The thesis examines the dynamic relation between CDS and bond spread on developed European sovereign bonds. We also investigate which variables will affect the changes of CDS and bond spreads.
We found that price discovery occurs on CDS more often, and the basis between CDS and bond spread has a positive relationship with credit risk. Due to the special characteristic of developed European sovereign bonds, the German sovereign bond yield is a better benchmark for risk-free rate than the Euro swap rate. Also we found that the change of rates and the return on stock market affect the European sovereign credit spread, but the effect of volatility on credit spread is limited. The reason should be the low-risk nature of these bonds in the past, which made them “safe” products for capitals to park.
