Role Management in a Privacy-Enhanced Collaborative Environment

Nowadays, social software is in demand in very different settings. Managing relationships (e.g., social networking sites) and content sharing (e.g., photo sharing), but also collaborative working via the Internet became a widely accepted part of the social lives of people. Especially, collaborative environments provide platforms supporting users in creating and exchanging new ideas, material, and conducting discussions, but also in representing themselves by allowing for according profile management etc., cf. [KR07]. Supporting the users’ privacy in such interactive environments stands in sharp contrast to the objectives of collaboration. However, previous work has shown that different approaches may overcome this ostensible contradiction. One further approach is subject of this paper and consists of a differentiated role management. Accordingly, this paper describes the particular settings of applications shaping Privacy-Enhanced Collaborative Environments (PECE), for which a comprehensive role management has to be realized. The paper discusses the implications on the role concept resulting from the privacy-related settings and introduces a three-dimensional approach for roles in a collaborative environment.

Enterprise Wikis Revealed: Die fünf Quellen der Motivation bei der Nutzung von Enterprise Wikis

Enterprise Wikis haben sich zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil der Corporate Intranets entwickelt. Aufgrund ihrer Nutzungsoffenheit und hohen Flexibilität lassen sich Enterprise Wikis für vielfältigste Einsatzzwecke verwenden. Dabei ist die Nutzungsmotivation der Mitarbeiter ein kritischer Stellhebel für den Erfolg von Enterprise Wikis. In diesem Beitrag wird auf Basis des aus der Arbeitspsychologie stammenden Konzepts „motivation sources inventory“ von BARBUTO & SCHOLL eine Untersuchung mittels Online-Befragung mit 95 Teilnehmern aus 10 verschiedenen Unternehmen durchgeführt. Hierbei wurde ersichtlich, dass Enterprise Wikis von den Befragten durchweg als wertvoll eingeschätzt werden. Weiterhin stellen die Nützlichkeit von Enterprise Wikis für die tägliche Arbeit sowie das Bestreben, Kollegen bzw. das eigene Team zu unterstützen wichtige Quellen der Motivation dar. Bezüglich der intrinsischen Prozessmotivation bei Enterprise Wikis, d.h. Spaß an der Benutzung, konnten stark divergierende Meinungen festgestellt werden. Hingegen ist Lob bzw. Reputation nur für einen kleinen Teil der Befragten motivierend, im Enterprise Wiki beizutragen.

Die Vernetzung einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Nutzergruppen in privaten und beruflichen Kontexten wird durch webbasierte Soziale Netzwerke (Social Networks) wie Myspace, Linkedin und Flickr gefördert. Zahlreiche Personen nutzen zudem so genannte Social Software wie Skype, Del.icio.us, YouTube oder den aktuellen Newcomer twitter. Entsprechende Anwendungen werden durch moderne Informationsund Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT), zumeist durch Internettechnologien, realisiert und ermöglichen es den Nutzern, entweder neue Inhalte zu erstellen, und diese dann mit ausgewählten Personen (oder auch mit der Öffentlichkeit) zu teilen, oder sie dienen dazu, Verbindungen mit bestehenden Kontakten abzubilden sowie Neue aufzubauen. Gleichzeitig ist für die meisten Menschen heutzutage der Gebrauch mobiler Endgeräte ein wesentlicher Bestandteil ihres alltäglichen Lebens. In Folge dessen wird in der Verbindung dieser beiden, zunächst separaten, Felder eine, wenn nicht gar die „Killer-Anwendung“ für mobile Dienstleistungen vermutet. Der vorliegende Beitrag hat das Ziel, Potentiale und Grenzen der weit reichenden Verbreitung von Social Software und Sozialen Netzwerken auf mobile Endgeräte zu analysieren.

Ausgehend von einer Betrachtung des Identitätsbegriffes unter Darstellung der Konzepte von Erik H. Erikson und Heiner Keupp wird untersucht, welchen Einfluss SocialWare auf die Identität der Benutzer haben kann. Nach Einführung des Begriffes virtuelle Identität werden Ansätze und Modelle aufgegriffen, die die Auswirkungen der Internetnutzung im Allgemeinen beschreiben und ihre Anwendbarkeit auf den Bereich der SocialWare geprüft. Dazu zählen die Selbstmaskierungs- und die Selbsterkundungsthese sowie die Problematik des Eskapismus. Des Weiteren werden eigene empirische Ergebnisse zur Selbstdarstellung in Form von stichpunktartigen Profilen beschrieben und die Verwendung von Begriffen wie Freundschaft kritisch hinterfragt.

Recommendation in Enterprise 2.0 Social Media Streams

A social media stream allows users to share user-generated content as well as aggregate different external sources into one single stream. In Enterprise 2.0 such social media streams empower co-workers to share their information and to work efficiently and effectively together while replacing email communication. As more users share information it becomes impossible to read the complete stream leading to an information overload. Therefore, it is crucial to provide the users a personalized stream that suggests important and unread messages. The main characteristic of an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream is that co-workers work together on projects represented by topics: the stream is topic-centered and not user-centered as in public streams such as Facebook or Twitter. A lot of work has been done dealing with recommendation in a stream or for news recommendation. However, none of the current research approaches deal with the characteristics of an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream to recommend messages. The existing systems described in the research mainly deal with news recommendation for public streams and lack the applicability for Enterprise 2.0 social media streams. In this thesis a recommender concept is developed that allows the recommendation of messages in an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream. The basic idea is to extract features from a new message and use those features to compute a relevance score for a user. Additionally, those features are used to learn a user model and then use the user model for scoring new messages. This idea works without using explicit user feedback and assures a high user acceptance because no intense rating of messages is necessary. With this idea a content-based and collaborative-based approach is developed. To reflect the topic-centered streams a topic-specific user model is introduced which learns a user model independently for each topic. There are constantly new terms that occur in the stream of messages. For improving the quality of the recommendation (by finding more relevant messages) the recommender should be able to handle the new terms. Therefore, an approach is developed which adapts a user model if unknown terms occur by using terms of similar users or topics. Also, a short- and long-term approach is developed which tries to detect short-term interests of users. Only if the interest of a user occurs repeatedly over a certain time span are terms transferred to the long-term user model. The approaches are evaluated against a dataset obtained through an Enterprise 2.0 social media stream application. The evaluation shows the overall applicability of the concept. Specifically the evaluation shows that a topic-specific user model outperforms a global user model and also that adapting the user model according to similar users leads to an increase in the quality of the recommendation. Interestingly, the collaborative-based approach cannot reach the quality of the content-based approach.

Role Management in a Privacy-Enhanced Collaborative Environment

Purpose Facing the dilemma between collaboration and privacy is a continual challenge for users. In this setting, this paper discusses issues of a highly flexible role management integrated in a privacy-enhanced collaborative environment. Design/methodology/approach The general framework was provided by former findings of several research projects, i.e., collaborative platform BluES and projects of privacy and identity management PRIME and PrimeLife. The role management concept bases on a literature survey and has been proofed by integration into the privacy-enhanced environment BluES’n. Findings A three-dimensional role management concept was developed describing users’ rights, tasks, and positions. A discussion on how to fulfill privacy requirements yielded that a semi-automated decision making regarding the use of roles with different identities is reasonable to support users’ control of their privacy when interacting with others. Research limitations/implications The concept of flexible role management complies with the requirements of privacy-enhanced collaborative environments. However, a fully automated approach of rule-based information disclosure is not possible as such decisions depend on personal and situational aspects. Practical implications Using the example of a flexible role management concept, research described in this paper demonstrates that privacy and interaction concerns can be balanced and should be considered in application design processes. Social implications Concepts of privacy-enhanced collaborative environments allow respecting privacy-related attitudes and could improve the quality of service consumption. Originality/value The paper demonstrates contrasts between collaboration and privacy attitudes and presents solutions for the integration of role management to overcome this initially supposed contradiction.
