Imagining the Future of Creative AI Tools : A Cospeculative Workshop

Eriksson, Emelie January 2022 (has links)
Creative artificial intelligence (AI) is often explored in terms of machine intelligence on a philosophical basis. As a counter-reaction, there have been calls for user-centered creative AI. This thesis aims to make visible creative practitioners’ needs, values, and ethical perspectives that might inform us on the construction of future creative AI tools. It also discusses the need for pragmatic aesthetics as a holistic design approach. Five artists of different backgrounds were invited to a co-speculative workshop where they expressed their thoughts and imaginings regarding creativity, creative tools, and AI. The results suggest that we need to be mindful of virtue ethics, N-creativity, exploration, intuition, trust, and agency when designing creative AI tools. Furthermore, the findings were used to propose design sensitivities aimed at AI researchers and designers. Future research is needed in order to make conclusions about the practical value of the proposed design sensitivities.

Speculative futures of sustainable communities : Utilizing the resources of collective living to speculate sustainable futures.

Larsson, Sara January 2019 (has links)
The purpose with this report is to speculate how our neighborhoods could look like in the future, looking at modern collective living due to the housing crisis is Sweden today. This paper will look att different forms of collective housing, to challenge the conventional way of living. Connecting sustainability to the act of sharing space and resources, in creating a collaborative lifestyle. The research methods used in this speculative project looks at three case studies of collective housing to analyse and define different levels of sharing. During the design process one intervention was executed to challenging the norm of ownership, questioning what the act of sharing demands. The goal of this project is to change assumptions of collective living by rethinking space. To create an interlaced community, with hopes of becoming more resilient. The research and its findings worked along- side the report and developed into a zine. The zine was made with key insights from the study, as a tool to communicate the design proposal and can easily be distributed to the Swedish population.

Fraga, Jefferson Souza. January 2011 (has links)
Accepting that the worst is over, that is to say, that the Japanese financial crisis was finally resolved, one thing is certain; not before a "lost decade" characterized by a long period of low growth, increasing rates of unemployment, deflation in asset prices, bank failures and persistence of no-performing loans. In this context, the main responses received for this work were: the belief that economic recovery would come with the passage of time and lack of understanding about the size of the problem that the slowness of action would lead to the system; this explains in some degree the initial tolerance of the Japanese government by the economic crisis. The expansionary fiscal was effective, but not consistently used, the nature of "stop-start" of the stimuli made, and in particular the early tax reversals decreased its effectiveness, other likely factors for the low efficiency during the year 1990 were: the fiscal stimuli may have been harmed by falling tax multipliers; the effective public investments were lower than those advertised instead of giving emphasis to public works, the priority was tax cuts. On the other hand, a fundamental way to maximize the tax incentives is through the restoration of credit from the banking sector, if the recapitalization and the restorations of the sector were held in an early stage, the effects of stimuli could be short term, if the financial system was in good health. In Japan, the injections in banks "large scale" occurred only in 1999. Moreover, monetary policy, based on an alternative version of the liquidity trap led the BOJ to take some innovative measures since 2001. Centered on a strategy to ensure liquidity and extend the warranties on direct purchases of assets, quantitative easing was implanted... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

The Tension between Art and Science in Historical Writing.

Depew, Michael Lee 16 August 2005 (has links)
A perennial question in the philosophy of history is whether history is a science or an art. This thesis contests that this question constitutes a false dichotomy, limiting the discussion in such a way as to exclude other possibilities of understanding the nature of the historical task. The speculative philosophies of Augustine, Kant, and Marx; the critical philosophies of Ranke, Comte along with the later positivist, and the historical idealist such as Collingwood will be surveyed. History is then examined along side art to discuss not only the similarities but, the differences. Major similarities—narrative presentation, emplotation, and the selective nature of historical evidence—between history and fiction are critiqued. A word study of the Greek word ίστοριά will show the essential difference between history and literature. The essential nature of the historical task can best be revealed in the differences between history and art.

The Mall: A world-building speculation on the future of privacy

Asif, Hazem 01 January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is a science fiction exploration of a future dystopian world where privacy becomes a dominant currency that is distributed according to social class and ranking mechanisms. It utilizes speculative world-building to study the unanticipated implications of technology on personal privacy, surveillance and social inequality on future societies. The project introduces The Mall, as a highly efficient and hyper-connected world, but also exposes its downfall as a society with heightened cultural and socio-political disparities. Inspired by past civilizations, the development of the modern nation-state as well as contemporary society, the design adapts, appropriates and reformulates existing cultures into new hybrid possibilities. This thesis project is presented as an illustrated coded tapestry that allows the viewer to explore and interact with various components of the narrative to speculate and critique an alternative future-world void of privacy.

Les premiers pas de la raison chez Hegel / Reason's first steps in Hegel

Acri Soares, Mariana D' 29 June 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to follow Hegel's path in the construction of his conception of reason in some of his first writings. We start analyzing the texts from Stuttgart (1785 - 1788) to 1800. We will show that Hegel has always intended to conceive reason differently from understanding and that his conception of reason corresponds to his ideal of unity, the unity of the universal and the individuality, his ideal of youth. Our study will guide to a comprehension of this ideal as an aesthetical-political ideal. Next, we will study two texts from the beginning of his stay at Iena – “The Difference Between Fichte's and Schelling's Systems of Philosophy and Faith and Knowledge”. The aim at this point is to show how Hegel starts elaborating his speculative philosophy as the auto production and autorecognition of reason. We also show that at the same time Hegel critics Kant's philosophy, he recognizes its value. Finally, the research presents the conception of reason at the Phenomenology of the Spirit. We follow the path of the "active reason" in its quest for the happy state, of fairness as the actualization of the unity of the universal and the individuality and we see the appearance of his intersubjective character. Our main objective is to show, despite the future development of his thoughts, the conception of reason remains as an ideal of unification.

En Urban Värld

Nguyen, Mikael, Wasberg, Johannes January 2019 (has links)
In this bachelor thesis we have examined technology such as projection mapping and projection, and how these could be used in the future with support from research sources such as science fiction, cyberpunk and futurism. In the thesis, we take a closer look at how these genres throughout history have speculated about different technologies and their ways of thinking, mainly with inspiration from cyberpunk, where we focus on the urban and its technology. We have with the help of a speculative design perspective as a basis and approach, created a prototype of a city based on a possible future where projection mapping has been developed and become a very common technology for society. During the course of the project, we have used methods such as mindmap, brainstorming, prototyping and speculative design to work our way forward. We have worked with these methods before and felt that they were the most effective for our project. We finally came up with a design that shows a possible future city where projection mapping is used everywhere to show advertising and the like on lots of buildings. This has been done using programs such as the Adobe programs to create what is projected and the mapping done in the HeavyM program, which is a program solely for projection mapping.

Shades of Certainty : Annotation and Classification of Swedish Medical Records

Velupillai, Sumithra January 2012 (has links)
Access to information is fundamental in health care. This thesis presents research on Swedish medical records with the overall goal of building intelligent information access tools that can aid health personnel, researchers and other professions in their daily work, and, ultimately, improve health care in general. The issue of ethics and identifiable information is addressed by creating an annotated gold standard corpus and porting an existing de-identification system to Swedish from English. The aim is to move towards making textual resources available to researchers without risking exposure of patients’ confidential information. Results for the rule-based system are not encouraging, but results for the gold standard are fairly high. Affirmed, uncertain and negated information needs to be distinguished when building accurate information extraction tools. Annotation models are created, with the aim of building automated systems. One model distinguishes certain and uncertain sentences, and is applied on medical records from several clinical departments. In a second model, two polarities and three levels of certainty are applied on diagnostic statements from an emergency department. Overall results are promising. Differences are seen depending on clinical practice, annotation task and level of domain expertise among the annotators. Using annotated resources for automatic classification is studied. Encouraging overall results using local context information are obtained. The fine-grained certainty levels are used for building classifiers for real-world e-health scenarios. This thesis contributes two annotation models of certainty and one of identifiable information, applied on Swedish medical records. A deeper understanding of the language use linked to conveying certainty levels is gained. Three annotated resources that can be used for further research have been created, and implications for automated systems are presented.
