The Spotlight is on Gender Roles : A Study of Verb Dynamics and Gender in Spotlight 7/8/9Wirgell, Linnea January 2010 (has links)
In the present study I have conducted a linguistic investigation of the textbook series Spotlight 7, 8 and 9 (Natur & Kultur 2008-2010) which is used in grades 7-9. The purpose of the investigation is to examine what gender roles are presented in the material. The theoretical approach is Halliday’s (2004) Functional Grammar Theory. The second part of the study presents a discourse analysis of three selected texts from Spotlight 7, 8 and 9 where the texts as well as the related pictures are analysed. The results from the whole study are compared to the goals on gender equality stated in the National Curriculum and the Educational Act. The result of the study reveals that the gender roles presented in the teaching material are less stereotypic than hypothesized but that, in accordance with my hypotheses, males were represented to a higher extent than females and transgenders. This result suggests that the material only partly fulfills the demands on gender equality that is found in the National Curriculum and the Educational Act.

Spelar storleken roll? Lithell, Elias, Ljungqvist, Niklas January 2021 (has links)
Background: One of the most common aspects when investing is to achieve high returns while maintaining the risk at low levels. Risks associated with firms vary due to different factors of which oneis the size. In order to reach satisfactory returns many investment strategies have been presented with the goal of outperforming the market and thus contrasts the efficient market hypothesis. Through investments in firms with low market value of equity, and in combination with other investment strategies, it is of interest to investigate whether outperforming the market is possible. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze whether a Small firm effect on the Spotlight Stock Market and First North during the years 2007-2019 could be proven and if it is possible in combination with investment strategies to generate risk-adjusted returns. Methodology: In order to complete the study a quantitative design in combination with a deductive design was used. Eight different portfolios were compiled based on the size of the companies as well as an investment strategy based on low P/BV-multiples. The samples were chosen from Spotlight StockMarket, Large Cap and First North. The results that were generated were analyzed based on return, risk-adjusted return and statistical test in the form of t-tests. Conclusion: The results from this study show that a Small Firm effect could not be established. The portfolios solely based on company size for Spotlight Stock Market and First North all performed a lower return than OMXSPI, though this could not be statistically confirmed. When an investment strategy based on low P/BV-multiples was used the portfolio based on Spotlight Stock Market showed a return higher than OMXSPI, though this could not be statistically confirmed either. Regarding the risk-adjusted excess return only one of the portfolios based on Spotlight Stock Market and First North could prove a risk-adjusted excess return. The portfolios based on Large Cap both proved a higher return than the small firm portfolios as well as risk-adjusted excess return.

Enhancements to synthetic aperture radar chirp waveforms and non-coherent SAR change detection following large scale disastersBayindir, Cihan 26 March 2013 (has links)
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is one of the most versatile tools ever invented for imaging. Due to its better Rayleigh resolution, SAR imaging provides the highest quality radar imagery. These images are used for many applications including but not limited to terrestrial mapping, disaster
reconnaissance, medical imaging and military applications. Imaging techniques or geometries which can improve the resolution of the reconstructed imagery is always desired in the SAR imaging. In this dissertation both the linear and nonlinear frequency modulated chirp signals are discussed. The most widely used frequency modulated chirp signal, linear frequency modulated chirp signal, and some of its properties such as spectrum, point spread function and matched filter are summarized. A new nonlinear frequency modulated chirp signal which can be used to improve the image resolution is introduced. In order to validate the offered chirp signal, spotlight SAR imaging geometry together with 2D polar and Stolt format reconstruction algorithms are considered. The synthetic examples are generated using both chirps both with polar and Stolt format processing. Additionally a new change detection method which depends on the idea of generating two different final change maps of the initial and final images in a sequence is offered. The specific algorithms utilized for testing this method are the widely used correlation coefficient change statistic and the intensity ratio change statistic algorithms. This method together with the algorithms mentioned is first applied to synthetic data generated by Stolt
format processing. It is shown that the method works on synthetic data. The method together with the algorithms mentioned is also applied to two case studies dfreal disasters, one is 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the second is 2008 China Sichuan earthquake. It is shown that two final change map method can reduce the false identifications of the changes. Also it is shown that intensity ratio change statistics is a better tool for identifying the changes due to oil contamination. The data used in this study is acquired by Japanese Aerospace Agency's Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) through Alaska SAR Facility (ASF), at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

Visual Attention among Patients with Schizophrenia: A Study of Visual Span and Selectivity in Visual SearchElahipanah, Ava 09 January 2014 (has links)
Attention is one of the most impaired cognitive functions in schizophrenia; however, the precise mechanisms underlying schizophrenia-related attention impairment are unclear. Progress in identifying these mechanisms has been hampered by using methods that are not designed to isolate specific cognitive processes. The purpose of the present dissertation was to investigate visual attention among patients with schizophrenia using the visual search paradigm — the dominant paradigm for studying attention in the cognitive sciences. Moreover, the current study used eye-tracking methodology to more finely examine the mechanisms underlying impaired visual search in this clinical population. This dissertation had three main objectives: (1) to investigate whether patients with schizophrenia have smaller and/or less dynamic visual spans, (2) to examine whether certain mechanisms guiding the visual selection of objects are impaired in schizophrenia, and (3) to determine the contribution of visual search performance to substitution test performance. Results indicated that patients’ visual spans are both smaller and less dynamic compared to healthy controls. On the other hand, selectivity for more informative distractors is intact in schizophrenia; however, impaired motion perception results in impaired target discrimination in the context of intact target selection. Results also indicated that visual search performance is a primary determinant of substitution test performance. Collectively, these data demonstrate, on one hand, an impairment among patients with schizophrenia in the distribution and flexible modulation of visual attention and, on the other hand, intact visual selective attention in the presence of strong bottom-up cues. The current data also demonstrate the important contribution of visual attention to a highly sensitive neuropsychological test and, by inference, to patients’ cognitive and real-world functioning.
