Exact Solutions of the Ising ModelRidderstolpe, Ludwig January 2017 (has links)
This report presents the general Ising model and its basic assumptions. This study aims to, from diagonalization of the Transfer Matrix, obtain the Helmholtz free energy and the exclusion of a phase transition for the one-dimensional Ising model under an external magnetic field. Furthermore from establishing the commutation relations of the Transfer matrices and using the Kramers-Wannier duality one finds the free energy and the presence of a phase transition for the square-lattice Ising model.

Fractional Moments and Singular Field ResponseWollny, Alexander 07 March 2017 (has links) (PDF)
In this PhD thesis, the physics of vacancies in two-dimensional ordered Heisenberg antiferromagnets is investigated. We use semi-classical methods to study the influence of a single vacancy in long-range ordered states, with a focus on non-collinear order. Here, on a classical level, a magnetic distortion is created as the spins readjust in response to the vacancy.
We use the non-collinear $120^\\circ$ state on the frustrated triangular lattice as an example, where we determine the impurity contributions to the magnetization and susceptibility. An important discovery is the vacancy moment not being quantized due to non-universal partial screening. The resulting effective moment $m_0 \\ll S$ can be observed as a fractional prefactor to an impurity-induced Curie response $m_0^2/(3k_BT)$ at finite temperature. This is in sharp contrast to collinearly ordered states. Here the moment is always quantized to the bulk spin value, $m_0=S$.
Furthermore, we present a detailed analysis of the vacancy-induced distortion cloud. Due to Goldstone modes, it decays algebraically as $r^{-3}$ with distance $r$ to the vacancy. Using leading-order $1/S$-expansion, we determine the quantum corrections to both size and direction of the distorted magnetic moments.
Secondly, we study the same problem in the presence of an external magnetic field $h$, both for the square and triangular lattice. For the triangular lattice we use a biquadratic exchange term $K$ to stabilize a unique ground state from a degenerate manifold. The finite-field vacancy moment $m(h)$ is generated by field-dependent screening clouds, as different non-collinear bulk states evolve with increasing field. These distortion clouds decay exponentially on a magnetic length scale $l_h\\propto 1/h$. Most importantly, we find that the magnetic-field linear-response limit $h \\rightarrow 0^+$ is generically singular for $SU(2)$ ordered local-moment antiferromagnets, as the vacancy moment in zero field differs fundamentally from even an infinitesimal but finite field, $m(h \\rightarrow 0^+)\\neq m_0$.
Moreover, a part of the screening cloud itself becomes universally singular. Particularly for spin-flop states, this leads to a semi-classical version of perfect screening. We present general arguments to support these claims, as well as microscopic calculations. Another remarkable result is an impurity-induced quantum phase transition for overcompensated vacancies in the $M=1/3$ plateau phase on the triangular lattice with $K<0$. We close our analysis with a discussion about important limits for finite vacancy concentrations, as well as a possible experimental verification of our predictions.

Análise de experimentos em látice quadrado no melhoramento vegetal utilizando modelos mistos / Analysis of experiments in square lattice in plant breeding using mixed modelsPaulenas, Viviane Panariello 05 October 2016 (has links)
Experiments conducted in the lattice design are quite common in plant breeding in which several genetic materials are compared, especially in the early stages of the program, aiming to explore more intensively the genetic variability available. The aim of the study was the evaluation of maize (Zea mays L.) progeny tests in different environments for grain yield in t.ha-1. Two hundred and fifty six progenies were tested in four experimental stations in the city of Piracicaba, in different agricultural years. Grain production data obtained by different environments were analyzed individually and jointly in order to verify the presence of genotype × environment interaction. Therefore, the square lattice design with dimension 16 × 16 was used with two replications in each location. Two experimental approaches were compared, considering the partially balanced incomplete block structure of the lattice and the other in each repetition of the lattice was analyzed as if it were a complete block. One way to analyze experimental structures like this is with the use of mixed models, by adding random effect factors, and by making use of the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) for estimating the variance components associated with such factors with less bias. Besides the variance components, EBLUPs (empirical best linear predictor unbiased) were also calculated and from them was checked the correlation between the different environments, and the percentage of selected progenies comparing the results obtained by the two assembly approaches data. Statistical analyzes were implemented for the open-souce software R, using the statistical package lme4.

Elektronenspinresonanz in Systemen mit ferromagnetischen KorrelationenFörster, Tobias 12 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)

Many complex systems, such as microbial colonies, colloidal aggregates, difusion of fluids, and migration of populations, involve a large number of similar units that form fractal structures. A new model of difusive agregation was proposed recently by Filoche and Sapoval [68]. Based on their work, we develop a model called Difusion with Aggregation and Spontaneous Reorganization . This model consists of a set of particles with excluded volume interactions, which perform random walks on a square lattice. Initially, the lattice is occupied with a density p = N/L2 of particles occupying distinct, randomly chosen positions. One of the particles is selected at random as the active particle. This particle executes a random walk until it visits a site occupied by another particle, j. When this happens, the active particle is rejected back to its previous position (neighboring particle j), and a new active particle is selected at random from the set of N particles. Following an initial transient, the system attains a stationary regime. In this work we study the stationary regime, focusing on scaling properties of the particle distribution, as characterized by the pair correlation function ?(r). The latter is calculated by averaging over a long sequence of configurations generated in the stationary regime, using systems of size 50, 75, 100, 150, . . . , 700. The pair correlation function exhibits distinct behaviors in three diferent density ranges, which we term subcritical, critical, and supercritical. We show that in the subcritical regime, the particle distribution is characterized by a fractal dimension. We also analyze the decay of temporal correlations / Na Natureza ? muito comum ocorrerem processos de difus?o.

Magnetické fáze umělého spinového ledu na čtvercové mřížce / Magnetic phases in an artificial realization of the square ice modelBrunn, Ondřej January 2019 (has links)
