Μελέτη της ηλεκτρικής απόδοσης και ηλεκτροχημική ενίσχυση της καταλυτικής ενεργότητας ανόδων πλατίνας και χρυσού κυψελών καυσίμου πολυμερικής μεμβράνης / Study of the electrical efficiency and electrochemical promotion of catalytic activity of platinum and gold anodes of polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Σαπουντζή, Φωτεινή 04 March 2009 (has links)
Fuel cells are electrochemical devices which convert chemical energy of a fuel directly to electricity. Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are close to commercialization. The most common fuel used is hydrogen, which is usually produced via hydrocarbons or alcohol reforming. However, during this process, carbon monoxide is formed as well, adsorbs strongly on the anode of the cell and thus impairs significantly its performance. The electrochemical promotion effect is a phenomenon where application of constant current or potential between a catalyst supported on a solid electrolyte and a reference electrode, leads to non-Faradaic changes in catalytic activity. In this thesis, it was studied the electrochemical promotion of oxidation of a methanol reformate mixture on platinum and gold anodes of a PEM fuel cell. It was found that electrochemical promotion is influenced by oxygen crossover through the polymer membrane and also by the cell operating conditions. Moreover, the electrical efficiency of platinum and gold anodes in presence of CO was studied and the values of the heat of CO adsorption on each anode and the activation energies of CO removal were estimated. Finally, the effect of temperature on the phenomenon of steady-state multiplicities was studied. It was found that increasing the temperature, the phenomenon of multiplicities is suppressed in agreement with the gama model.

Free surface films of binary liquid mixtures

Bribesh, Fathi January 2012 (has links)
Model-H is used to describe structures found in the phase separation in films of binary liquid mixture that have a surface that is free to deform and also may energetically prefer one of the components. The film rests on a solid smooth substrate that has no preference for any component. On the one hand the study focuses on static aspects by investigating steady states that are characterised by their concentration and film height profiles. A large variety of such states are systematically analysed by numerically constructing bifurcation diagrams in dependence of a number of control parameters. The numerical method used is based on minimising the free energy functional at given constraints within a finite element method for a variable domain shape. The structure of the bifurcation diagrams is related to the symmetry properties of the individual solutions on the various branches. On the other hand the full time dependent model-H is linearised about selected steady states, in particular, the laterally invariant, i.e.\ layered states. The resulting dispersion relations are discussed and related to the corresponding bifurcation points of the steady states. In general, the results do well agree and confirm each other. The described analysis is performed for a number of important cases whose comparison allows us to gain an advanced understanding of the system behaviour: We distinguish the critical and off-critical case that correspond to zero and non-zero mean concentration, respectively. In the critical case the investigation focuses on (i) flat films without surface bias, (ii) flat films with surface bias, (iii) height-modulated films without surface bias, and (iv) height-modulated films with surface bias. Each case is analysed for several mean film heights and (if applicable) energetic bias at the free surface using the lateral domain size as main control parameter. Linear stability analyses of layered films and symmetry considerations are used to understand the structures of the determined bifurcation diagrams. For off-critical mixtures our study is more restricted. There we consider height-modulated films without and with surface bias for several mean film heights and (if applicable) energetic bias employing the mean concentration as main control parameter.

Nutrient sources for excessive growth of benthic algae in Lake Ontario as inferred by the distribution of SRP

Martin, Grace Marion January 2010 (has links)
Total phosphorus concentrations in the open waters of the Laurentian Great Lakes are currently at or beneath target concentrations set by international agreement. Despite the success of phosphorus loading controls in remediating nearshore eutrophication problems in the past, nuisance growth of Cladophora has recently returned to the lower Great Lakes. This thesis examines soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in a northwestern segment of Lake Ontario to assess whether allochthonous or autochthonous sources of phosphate lead to localized areas of PO43- enrichment that may help to explain the seemingly paradoxical resurgence of Cladophora. As SRP is often an overestimate of PO43- in P-limited waters, measures of SRP made with the standard method were compared with measures of SRP made with modified methods (i.e., using dialysis and magnesium-induced co-precipitation) designed to more accurately measure phosphate when it was expected to be at low concentrations. Measures of SRP made with standard and modified methods did not differ, however, SRP was 1 to 3 orders of magnitude higher than a more sensitive steady-state radiobioassay for PO43- used for comparison in offshore waters. Although the utility of SRP is limited when phosphate concentrations are very low, SRP is useful to measure localized areas of phosphate enrichment, and its relative concentrations can be compared in time and space. To quantify the degree to which allochthonous inputs and dreissenids contribute to PO43- concentrations that permit Cladophora growth, intensive sampling for SRP was carried out prior to, during and following the Cladophora growing season. SRP was higher in the nearshore than offshore and near the mouth of a large tributary and a treated wastewater outfall than in samples from other locations along the shoreline, but only in the spring and autumn. Phosphate turnover times indicated lower P-limitation in the nearshore and near local inputs versus the offshore. Higher concentrations of SRP were measured in samples taken 15 cm and 50 cm above dreissenid mussel-beds than in those obtained at corresponding depths over other substrata and from higher up in the water column through the Cladophora growing season, while Chl a concentrations displayed the reverse trend. These results suggest that PO43- excreted by dreissenids could be more important in time and space than external inputs in supporting nuisance Cladophora growth in the current nearshore environment. Continued research and monitoring of P dynamics in the nearshore combined with model approaches should better predict whether more stringent P controls would be effective in managing Cladophora growth.

Thermal analysis is of equal importance as the electromagnetic design of the machine, because the temperature rise of the machine eventually determines the maximum output power. The purpose of this study is to record the temperature distribution of the internal parts of an induction motor at steady state using an equivalent thermal circuit with lumped parameters. The first chapter is an introduction of the thermodynamic theory. The laws of thermodynamics are described and there is a brief report of heat transfer mechanisms. The second chapter describes analytically the heat transfer mechanisms. Also, an example of modelling using thermal equivalent resistances is given. The third chapter introduces shortly the operational principles of an induction machine. Here are also referred the various losses that occur during the rotation of an induction motor. The studied induction motor, with the modified stator winding to include thermocouples, is shown. The fourth chapter introduces the method of thermal analysis using thermal equivalent circuit with lumped parameters. The proposed model is given and its components are described in particular. At last, in the fifth chapter the results of temperature distribution are given and compared with experimental data of temperature values that are acquired using the thermocouples. Here also takes apart the parameterising of the various coefficients that were used or calculated during this study.

Modeling and Analysis of Grid Connected Variable Speed Wind Generators

Seshadri Sravan Kumar, V January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The growing demand for power and increased environmental concerns gave an impetus to the growth of clean and renewable energy sources like wind, solar etc. There is a remarkable increase in the penetration of wind energy systems in the last decade and this trend is bound to increase at a much faster pace in future. This ever increasing penetration of wind power generating systems pose multi-fold challenges related to operational and stability aspects of the grid. Present day wind energy systems mostly comprise of variable speed wind generators. A large fraction of present day variable speed wind turbine generators use doubly fed induction machine (DFIM). This thesis deals with modeling and grid coordination aspects of variable speed wind gener- ators. In particular, the short coming of the existing steady state equivalent circuit of a DFIM is identified and subsequently, an accurate equivalent circuit of a DFIM is proposed. Relevant mathematical basis for the proposed model is presented. The proposed steady state equivalent circuit of a doubly fed induction machine is further validated using dynamic simulations of a standalone machine. Based on the proposed equivalent circuit, two approaches for computing the initial values of state variables of a DFIM is proposed. The first approach is a linear formulation where the losses due to resistance of the stator and rotor windings are neglected. The second approach is a non-linear formulation which takes the losses into consideration. Further, analysis is carried out on grid connected doubly fed induction generators (DFIG). A framework to incorporate DFIG based variable speed wind farms in the steady state power flow analysis is proposed. The proposed framework takes into consideration important aspects such as voltage dependent reactive power limits and mode of reactive power control of associated converters. Some of the challenges in a grid connected DFIG especially during su- persynchronous mode of operation are identified. The advantages of a non-Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) mode of operation under certain operating conditions is highlighted. Finally, aspects pertaining to coordination of grid connected variable speed wind generators are studied. A trust region framework to determine the reference values to the control loops of converters in a variable speed wind generator is proposed. The proposed framework identifies the reference values considering other reactive power controllers in the grid. Moreover, the proposed framework ensures that the steady state voltage stability margin is maximized. On the computational front, trust region algorithms ensure global convergence. The mathematical models and initialization algorithms proposed in this thesis are tested on standalone systems under various control scenarios. The algorithms proposed to incorporate a grid connected DFIG in steady state analysis tools have been tested on a sample 6-bus system and a practical 418-bus equivalent system of Indian southern grid.

Performance evaluation in post integrated organic Rankine cycle systems : A study on operational systems utilizing low grade heat

Lindqvist, Jakob, Faber, Niklas January 2018 (has links)
Organic Rankine cycles can be integrated with district heating systems and in applications of biogas digestion. Evaluating the performance of the installations by Againity AB in Ronneby and Norrköping, Sweden, is a unique opportunity which can support the establishment of ORC technology in the waste heat recovery market, unveiling its feasibilities and limitations. Operational data gathered from October 2017 until April 2018, provides this thesis with information about the ORC-systems. A method using Coolprop and Matlab has been used to detect steady-state series in the Ronneby installation using moving standard deviation and inclination criteria. By screening the data and selecting these series, analytical equations can be used to determine the performance of the installations and map the linear relationship between variables like pressure and generator power. The largest impact on the system in Ronneby is developed in the condenser. Large coolant volume flow creates large heat sink capacity and higher generator efficiency and power. However, with increasing generator power the condenser pressure decrease. Lower condenser pressure results in a decreased evaporation pressure, which could be maintained if the pump was able to run at higher frequencies. The Plant in Norrköping needs further studies and a review of its sensors. The code in Matlab is a resource to Againity and Linköpings university for future work in performance evaluation. It can be used to detect errors in energy balance, local readings, and picture the machines' performance graphically.

Etude de l'évolution de la perméabilité du béton en fonction de son endommagement : transposition des résultats de laboratoire à la prédiction des débits de fuite sur site / Concrete permeability and damage : transposition of laboratory results to prediction of leakage rates on real structures

Sogbossi, Hognon Eric Arnaud 12 December 2017 (has links)
The building reactor of the nuclear power plants are designed to provide precise containment and sealing properties in normal use situations and in the event of a nuclear accident, to prevent the spread of radioelements in the environment. Since these enclosures are made of concrete, controlling the evaluation of the permeability of concrete and its evolutions under stress would make it possible to evaluate the leakage rates that may occur over time under certain conditions. Until today, there are several techniques for measuring permeability and these techniques lead to different results for the same concrete specimen. The first study we carried out was therefore to propose a standardization of the permeability measurement: this standardization resulted in the determination of a characteristic permeability of concrete and independent of the measurement technique. In parallel with this approach, we also proposed to evaluate the permeability of concrete using observables from Non-Destructive Testing such as permittivity and electrical resistivity. The results obtained show the possibility of estimating the permeability under concrete conditions on site. The second study carried out relates to the control of the permeability under constraints. In the laboratory, we investigated the permeability of concrete specimens of different sizes under various conditions of drying, thermal stress, mechanical and coupled damage. We could establish permeability-damage models according to each source of damage. The third study carried out relates to the transposition from laboratory results to the site, using nuclear power plants mock-up of larger dimensions and representative of the actual structure (VeRCoRs at scale 1/3). All the results of the first two studies have been used and have led to calculations of leak rates and Time to Reach Steady State (TRSS) consistent with the calculation assumptions.

A proper representation of the electric distribution network operation, taking into account smart grid technologies, is key to accomplish these goals. This work presents mathematical formulations for the steady-state operation of electric distribution networks, which consider the unbalance of three-phase grids. Mathematical models of the operation of smart grid-related devices present in electric distribution networks are developed (e.g., volt-var control devices, energy storage systems, and plug-in electric vehicles). Furthermore, features related to the voltage dependency of loads, distributed generation, and voltage and thermal limits are also included. These formulations constitute a mathematical framework for optimization analysis of the electric distribution network operation, which could assist planners in decision-making processes. Different objectives related to technical and/or economic aspects can be pursued within the framework; in addition, the extension to multi-period and multi-scenario optimization is discussed. The presented models are built based on mixed integer linear programming formulations, avoiding the use of conventional mixed integer nonlinear formulations. The application of the presented framework is illustrated throughout control approaches for plug-in electric vehicle charging coordination, voltage magnitude control, and renewable distributed generation control. Several methods are developed, based on this framework, to optimize the operation of unbalanced distribution systems considering not only different penetrations of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources but also the presence of storage systems and volt-var control devices. In this regard, dynamic scheduling and rolling multi-period optimization are often used to achieve optimal economic operation in the grid. The effective and robustness of the methodologies, as well as the reliability of the mathematical framework, are verified using many test systems (e.g., 123-node, 34-node, and 178-node) with medium and low voltage nodes, different operation control time frames, and several control availabilities related to the smart grid devices.
