Oliveira, Everaldo Santos 05 November 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T14:16:44Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Everaldo Santos Oliveira.pdf: 799551 bytes, checksum: e5b1769e747b9d3aa2a0a36dc81e224d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-11-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research makes an analysis of the process of accountability of mothers of children and adolescents living on the streets, abandonment context in which their children are. The presence of children and adolescents living on the streets of our cities constitutes one of the cruelest expressions of social inequality that affects our country. This phenomenon is not new in the history of Brazil, and even with the economic, social and legal advances in recent decades, continues to exist. Several scientific studies have been conducted on this topic, however, there is a prevalence in these theoretical debates a discussion of the various factors causing this phenomenon and care to this population policies. In conceptual and empirical field we did not find a deeper reflection on the importance of the mother of the boys and girls on the streets as provider affective, moral and material in the lives of their children and the whole family. This thesis aims to develop an analysis of the naturalization process and accountability of the roles socially assigned to the family institution, more specifically the mother figure in the material and emotional care of their children, and the consequent "blame" those mothers who, for various reasons, do not correspond to moral, social and legal imposed by various segments of society. This study also sought to analyze the mother figure of perspective, the reasons why your child to get the experience of living on the street. The methodological process is based on the socio-historical analysis of conceptual approaches on family, gender, race / ethnicity, deepening the different theme determinations addressed in relation to children, adolescents and their families. We conducted a case study based on the analysis of the life stories of three women mothers of young people on the streets, interviewed for this search. Through these analyzes it was possible to realize how much these individual reports are organized around certain individual and collective events, moving beyond the merely subjective character. The categorization and analysis of the speeches of the people-subject took into consideration the fact that in quantitative research data collection occurs in a context fluent relations in the interactive process with the subjects, in order to reach its essence. Opting for this type of research is rightly given the fact that it encourage respondents to think freely about any subject, object, or concept, which allowed researchers to access objective aspects, but also subjective, of respondents spontaneously. From the analysis and discussion of the data it can be said that despite all the adversities and misunderstandings that mark the lives of these women, they are those who take on the difficult task of being the mainstay of the family and the primary affective and moral reference for your children / A presente pesquisa realiza uma análise sobre o processo de responsabilização das mães das crianças e adolescentes em situação de rua, pelo contexto de abandono no qual os seus filhos se encontram.

Woodward Avenue, Detroit : a pedestrian zone for a changing downtown retail street

Lewis, Philip Strickland January 1981 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1981. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 101-102). / The thesis studies the changing direction of Detroit's central downtown shopping street, Woodward Avenue. During the last two decades, Woodward Avenue has lost most of its retail market to suburban shopping centers. The downtown shopping district needs a physical design improvement, as well as economic help. Currently, there are various ongoing and proposed projects to help the Woodward Avenue shopping district: a Woodward Avenue pedestrian mall with trees and street furniture, a subway with Woodward A venue stations, and an enclosed shopping center. While these projects have the potential to greatly influence Woodward Avenue, they need to be lightly integrated with the existing street to truly help the business district. Perhaps most important, the proposed shopping center should be an active ingredient of the streetscape, rather than an introverted entity. The thesis design proposal attempts to integrate the various projects into a system of related improvements which reinforce the street. / by Philip Strickland Lewis. / M.Arch.

We chose the city of Guaruja, in Santos, for being one of the places of highest demand of this population. Its specific objectives: a) outline the profile of the homeless city of Guaruja - SP, according to age, education, work status, family structure and reason lies in the streets; b) Check for diagnosis of chronic and / or comorbidity and perceived health - disease of the homeless city of Guarujá - SP; c) Identify the means of access to and control of chronic disease comorbidities in places providing health services in the city of Guarujá - SP; d) assess the perception of risk and the impact of social stigma on the emotions of the homeless city of Guaruja - SP. Qualitative research was used in this work, because this approach works with a plethora of meanings, motives, aspirations, beliefs, values and attitudes acquired in the historical and social process that set of human phenomena are understood as part of social reality. The results confirmed male dominated, with low education leading them to provide informal jobs and low quality; most respondents have compromised to the point of interfering with their health conditions of survival feelings and emotions like fear sadness, longing and abandonment of the family were evident during this research. It was also noted in the reports attitudes of violence against this population by civil guards the city, which increases the risk experienced by those who only have the streets for shelter. The access to these health services is made primarily by the Emergency Unit and the Emergency PSUs when they are accompanied or referred to this service. The analysis and discussion of the results was performed from three angles: Axis 1: Living Conditions; Axis 2: Health, disease and access to health services; Axis 3 and discussed the representations of the homeless on health and disease. We conclude that the city of Guarujá, as well as many other Brazilian cities, still has a long way to go in serving the population. Has need to implement municipal social policies in accordance with the National Policy for the homeless population that recognizes their rights and guarantee the minimum conditions of citizenship.

Queer Threats and Abject Desires in Four Films from New American Cinema

Gay, Christian 10 August 2009 (has links)
This dissertation is an in-depth critical analysis of four American films made during the 1970s, with emphasis placed on the films' construction of gender and sexuality. This dissertation draws from the tradition of queer film criticism presented in the writings of such theorists as Barbara Creed, Alexander Doty, Richard Dyer, Vito Russo, and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick. Taking a queer perspective, these film readings explore how particular works implement queer codes and foster a sexually ambiguous world on film. While not typically included in discussions of Queer Cinema or New American Cinema, these four films, Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets (1973), Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation (1974), Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975), and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), exhibit a family resemblance and as a cycle are products of a particular period in American cinematic experimentation. A detailed scene-by-scene analysis is enacted in order to bring to light queer moments in the films and queer concerns of the films' makers. Raising questions about how the camera constructs character identities in these films, this study is reflective of the ways queer perspectives inflect filmmaking from this era.

Greening the Streets: A Comparison of Sustainable Stormwater Management in Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California

Schweitzer, Na'ama 01 May 2013 (has links)
Stormwater runoff is one of the main sources of pollution for urban waterways. Stormwater has traditionally been managed through concrete-based storm drainage systems, but the past twenty years have introduced an alternative in the form of green infrastructure. Green infrastructure for stormwater management involves the use of low impact development (LID), often vegetated facilities to mimic natural hydrologic systems that capture and allow infiltration of rainwater where it falls and from impervious surfaces upstream, before entering the drainage system. Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California have adopted green infrastructure into their stormwater management plans. For this project, bioswales, a form of vegetated LID facility, were tested in each city to determine their pollutant retention capabilities. Results from Portland show that bioswales filter out heavy metals effectively, and results from Los Angeles show that bioswales accumulate heavy metals in the soil over the course of the year (also due to filtering out metals from the stormwater). These results raise the question of whether accumulation can reach dangerous levels or saturate the soil with pollutants so that removal efficiency is diminished, indicating a need for further monitoring. However, the success of bioswales up to this point is encouraging and indicates that this method should continue to be employed.

Virvelgator i atmosfären

Hallgren, Christoffer January 2011 (has links)
The visual appearance of the atmospheric vortex street behind a high mountain on an island is very similar to the periodic pattern caused by the flow past a circular cylinder. The friction between the fluid and the surface of the cylinder creates a wake downstream of the cylinder and periodic von Kármán vortex shedding occurs. The flow may be characterized by means of the Reynolds number and using a numerical model the different states can be simulated. If the algorithm lacks a turbulence model, the results for high Reynolds numbers will be wrong. The atmospheric vortex streets do not, however, arise due to friction. Instead, blocking of air masses and density variations are needed for the vortices to develop. To be able to draw conclusions about atmospheric vortex streets 11 satellite images showing the vortex streets have been analyzed. The relation λ = 3.9b-5.3 (coefficient of determination r2 = 0.91) was found, where λ is the wavelength of the vortex street and b the width of the island. The mean value of the ratio λ/b is 4.33 which is comparable with results from a similar study.

Changing Shichahai: an historic district for a modern world

Jin, You, 靳悠 January 2009 (has links)
Beijing is the most important and dynamic city in China. A vital ingredient in that success has been its historic environment- its imperial palaces, its temples, its siheyuans, its hutongs- which provides the texture of the Old Beijing city. The historic environment is key to Beijing’s prosperity and a social asset of value. Nearly all the most prosperous and desirable areas in Beijing, the places where people most want to live, work and visit, are those where the historic environment is a dominant influence. The article, “World Heritage Areas: A Critical Analysis”, written by Peter Neville, Hadley in National Post Canada says: UNESCO's World Heritage List is intended to help preserve historic sites, but in China, inclusion on the list can be the kiss of death. The major "carrot" of heritage designation is the increased levels of tourism its prestige generates. Apparently, not only the designated heritage sites, but all the heritages are faced with the fate of being destroyed by tourism and development. Old buildings and lanes in Beijing never stop drawing visitors. The city, even the whole country is now proud of prosperous tourism which is always associated with ‘economic flourishing’. Virtually, every introduction tourism text contains at least one chapter discussing the social, cultural, and environmental impacts of tourism. This topic has also been the subject of extensive investigation in the academic literature. However, in regions that are undergoing rapid development and where an ethos of conservation has not been established, often surprising ignorance of the negative consequences of tourism exists. In China, the attitude is still that the benefits of economic development outweigh any adverse costs such development may have. However, such an attitude is now seen as being shortsighted. As a result, a more balanced approach to tourism is advocated, acknowledging both its beneficial and detrimental effects on host communities and their cultures. Conservation is about ensuring that we make the best use of our historic environment. It is a tool for managing change. Some still believe that conservation is simple about preserving the fabric of old buildings unchanged and developing the economic potential of tourism. They failed to see that conservation is an overarching work, the opposite of a wasteful society. It is easy to destroy - and today we have the tools, the money and the technology - but difficult to create. Cultural heritage, areas, landscapes and communities are a finite resource. Once lost they are lost forever. The purpose of conservation is to ensure that destruction is kept to a minimum while allowing creativity and innovation to flourish. We should preserve the town of the past for the man of the future. / published_or_final_version / Conservation / Master / Master of Science in Conservation
