Silva, Luciano Henrique Ferreira da 23 April 2012 (has links)
The first publications of horror comics edited by La Selva Publishing since 1950, started an publishing tradition that would last nearly 40 years in the Brazilian consume culture. The popularity of the horror genre in the Brazilian comics allowed the proliferation, survival and growth of many small publishers, mainly allocated on the suburbs of São Paulo. By the methods of importation and adaptation of editorial matter from La Selva Publishing , or because the search for emancipation and development of Brazilian artists by Outubro Publishing, the horror comics becomes an important material source to theoretical research about work practices, organization forms and methodology of Brazilian publishers from the 50’s and 60’s. Focusing the commercial exploitation of horror genre in these two decades, we will make a socio-historical approach of labor relashionship, production and consumption, in view of intermediation between different social groups involved in these processes. Correlating the interferences between language and technical codes among the media, we intend to demonstrate influences of media products and cultural industry to form new professional skills, methods and formats. Investigating the inheritance of methods, techniques and language of the legacy from the pulp fiction in pulp magazines, from which emerged new formats such as comic book and photo-romance magazines, we observe that the introduction of these new formats was caused by the need to change the choices of publishing towards massification. In this historical period of the consolidation of cultural industries and media convergence in the Brazilian cultural scene, we will compare the tradition of horror comics started by La Selva and Outubro, with the popularity of radio broadcast and motion picture film. In the filmography of José Mojica Marins and the popular character Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe), we see a synthesis of the blend betwen technical language and the course of visual narrative, transported from comics to the movies, as the reuse of professionals related to the horror tradition in Brazilian comic. In the technical, discursive and socio-historical analysis about the selected works, we expose the vision of these social groups on technical development, and on the other hand, understand it as a result of interaction between multiple areas and social actors.

[en] We live in a world flooded by images, which multiply even more in the digital age. The present Master s thesis has as its starting point the premise that images as well as verbal texts can be read, since they are visual representations. The language of images has been studied for decades by historians, communicologists and semiologists. I propose to take it to the classroom, to discuss it and to create a space in digital medium to relate it to the lived history, outside the school environment. The type of image chosen to give materialization to this work were comic strips on the theme of the Cold War. The place of diffusion of these is a blog, type of digital diary that allows the exchange of knowledge between teacher and student.

Diálogo entre diferentes temporalidades refratadas e textos verbo-visuais de periódicos brasileiros contemporâneos / Dialogue between different time frames refracted in verbal-visual texts of contemporary Brazilian journals

Souza, Elaine Hernandez de 12 November 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, we reflect on the standpoints printed on contemporary journal texts - strips and chronics that retake oral tradition narratives, between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, in order to understand aspects of different worldviews and the evaluative positioning of the subject-author and of the expected subject-contemplator as a way to give a committed answer to their time. Along the issues of the journals, the theming of these narratives was done at random, amid diverse contents and as part of the cultural repertoire of the artists. In the survey that was conducted, the corpus was composed as follows: (1) fifty-four strips by the cartoonist Fernando Gonsales, published in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo between 2004 and 2011, that bring as the theme the fairy tales Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and The story of the three little pigs; (2) three chronics by Millor Fernandes, that circulated in the weekly magazines Veja and IstoÉ in the 1980s, thematising the same tales, which enables a comparative work. To guide our vision, we base our analysis on Bakhtin\'s architectonic design, developed mainly in the first texts written by Bakhtin and the Circle in the 1920s. This concept allows us to understand how the text elements - form, content and materials - are organized by centers of values established in the relation between author-creator, hero, author-contemplator. Associated with this notion, we deal with the categories of space and time, developed by Bakhtin (1937-1938, 1973). These categories lead us to the understanding of the interaction between author-creator and/or author-contemplator and artistic object, in a particular spatial-temporal context. In dialogue with the research object, we start from the following hypothesis: if all text is a responsive act to the time that it emerges from, then the contemporary world view is refracted in humor texts from the journal sphere that circulated in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, when these texts resume narratives of the oral tradition spread between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. At the end of the work, it is shown that, in the crossing of the strips by Fernando Gonsalves and the chronics by Millor Fernandes with the fairy tales, the parody moves from an idealized world: in the strips, it also sets as a mockery of the contemporary way of life; in the chronics, as a social critique and reflection on human existence.

EVALUATION OF VEGETATED FILTER STRIP IMPLEMENTATIONS IN DEEP RIVER PORTAGE-BURNS WATERWAY WATERSHED USING SWAT MODEL

Linji Wang (5930996) 16 January 2019 (has links)
In 2011, the Deep River Portage-Burns Waterway Watershed was identified as a priority in the Northwest Indiana watershed management framework by the Northwester Indiana Regional Planning Committee. 319 grant cost-share programs were initiated in effort of maintaining and restoring the health of Deep River Portage-Burns Waterway Watershed. A watershed management plans have been developed for this watershed which proposed the implementation of vegetated filter strips (VFS) as an option. In this thesis work, the effectiveness of VFS as a best management practice (BMP) for the Deep River system was evaluated using a hydrological model scheme. <div><br></div><div>In this research, a Nonpoint Source Pollution and Erosion Comparison Tool (NSPECT) model and a Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model were constructed with required watershed characteristic data and climate data. The initial hydrologic and nutrient parameters of the SWAT model were further calibrated using SWAT Calibration and Uncertainty Programs (SWAT_CUP) with historical flow and nutrient data in a two-stage calibration process. The calibrated parameters were validated to accurately simulate the field condition and preserved in SWAT model for effectiveness analysis of BMP implementations. </div><div><br></div><div>To evaluate the effectiveness of VFS as a BMP, four different scenarios of VFS implementations along the Turkey Creek was simulated with the calibrated SWAT model. With the implementation of VFS in the tributary subbasin of Turkey Creek, the annual total phosphorus (TP) of the VFS implemented subbasin was reduced by 1.60% to 78.95% and the annual TP of downstream subbasins were reduced by 0.09% to 55.42%. Daily percentage of TP reductions ranged from 0% to 90.3% on the VFS implemented subbasin. Annual TP reductions of the four scenarios ranged from 28.11 kg to 465.01 kg.<br></div>

O que cabe entre essas quatro retas? Análise discursiva de tiras cômicas argentinas e brasileiras sobre as copas de 1994 e 2014 / What can we fit into these four lines? A discursive analysis of Argentinian and Brazilian comic strips about the 1994 and 2014 World Cups

Oliveira, Rosangela Aparecida Dantas de 29 September 2017 (has links)
This thesis shows the results of a research on comics strips from local production in Argentine and in Brazil, focus on football and its role in the identity construction of both countries. Approaching the comic strips as a discursive genre, that is, as a sociohistorically conditioned communicational device (Maingueneau, 2010) and analyzing them considering their insertion in the social spatiality. It is a comparative and interdisciplinary work in which we use theoretical references from both the discursive and enunciative studies, as well as reflections from other fields of knowledge, such as History (Campos, 2015; Franco-Júnior, 2007). Sociology (Bordieu ([1976] -2002, Archetti, 1995, Alabarces, 2014), Anthropology (Guedes, 2006) and Communication (Martín-Barbero, 1991). In order to analyze, we mobilized the concept of the scene of enunciation (Maingueneau, 2001, 2006). From the exam of the encompassing and generic scene of the comic strips, we reconstructed its historicity in Argentina and Brazil, focusing specifically on its routine publication in the daily newspapers. Along the way, we found that the differences identified in the socio-historical formation of these countries rebound in the insertion of the gender in the respective social spatiality. Analyzing the scenographies, we considered a corpus composed of Argentine and Brazilian strips published respectively in the Clarín and Folha de S. Paulo newspapers by the 1994 and 2014 World Cup occasions. Based on the categories proposed by Charaudeau (2006) for the study of humorous discourse, in the analysis of these strips (i) we investigated what kind of meaning effects are built on the defeats and victories of the Argentine and Brazilian teams in the aforementioned editions of the Cup; (Ii) we examined the procedures used to obtain the humor and its possible effects, (iii) we observed that the interdiscursive relationships are established, (iv) identified positions regarding to soccer and the World Cup. Contrasting the results, we highlighted the similarities and differences in relation to the previous themes observed in the productions of both countries.

Key Success Factors of Taiwan¡¦s Copper Alloy Strips Manufacturers in Managing Business in China

Chen, Husan-wen 29 July 2007 (has links)
In recent years, the rise of the BRIC economies (China, India, Brazil and Russia) has caused industries in the developed and even in the developing countries, to shift toward the rising economies. The Chinese market has in the recent years become the fastest growing market with tremendous potential. Business enterprises have not only laid their eyes on the cheap labor costs, but are also deeply attracted by its market opportunities. Taiwan holds the advantage of being close in geographic proximity, and similar language and culture with China. Many Taiwanese business enterprises have made China the first choice when considering extending business to foreign markets. However, the enormous market incentives have accelerated competition within the industry. In addition to survival, it is more important for business enterprises to continually grow and profit. Therefore it is the aim of this study to investigate how business enterprises could find ways of ensuring its survival, which allows it to grow and profit, in the fierce Chinese battlefield. It is hoped from the study of Chinese business environment and analysis of current status, that key success factors of Taiwanese business enterprises in the industry can be identified. It is expected that the results of the study can be valuable recommendations to the industry. The traditional industries have always been the foundation of Taiwan¡¦s economic growth. The contributions made by the manufacturing industry to the economic growth of Taiwan cannot be overlooked. However, as the high-tech industries prosper and change of the domestic industry structure, traditional industries had been in an inferior position with respect to acquisition of resource, such as human and financial resources. Faced with a fierce competitive environment, how the traditional manufacturing industries break out of the growth-stagnant bottleneck requires the identification of key success factors of the industry. Business strategies should be developed according to such factors, putting effort in strengthening and building on the success factors, so that greatest leverage of limited resources can bring profit and continued competitive advantage. Although the copper alloy industry is considered a traditional industry, its products serve downstream users in ironmongery, electric appliance and electronics. The industry has its critical value of existence in the market¡¦s supply chain. Hence, the copper alloy plants have been chosen as he subject for this study. Through research and analysis of the industry, the study seeks to identify the critical success factors of copper alloy strip manufacturers in managing the Chinese market. The results will enable business enterprises to develop strategies for managing the Chinese market. This is a qualitative case study. Three largest copper alloy strip manufacturers were selected for the case study. Further to collection of secondary data on the copper alloy strip industry and supply-demand status of the China market, interviews were conducted with middle to senior managers of the manufacturers in the industry. Through the arrangement, analysis and study of secondary data and interviews, key success factors of the copper alloy industry were identified. The buying decisions and end user perspectives were referenced to validate the success factors identified from research. The study hopes to include the end user¡¦s purchasing perspectives into the key success factors identified from industry analysis. It is hoped that the key factors identified could be more objective, so that the success factors would be of value to business enterprises. Lastly, the key success factors of Taiwanese copper alloy strip manufacturers in conducting business in China are: (1) acquisition of core technology for high level products, (2) acquiring personnel with international capabilities and specialized knowledge in copper industry, (3) promote the bargaining power with raw material suppliers, (4) sound financial structure and financial management capabilities, and (5) establishment of network relationships. These five key success factors revolve around three critical resources, namely technology, human resource and financial resource. Through external networks, the strength of these three internal resources can bring about positive effects.

Women's Citizenship: Between Bloodlines and Patriarchal Conditioning in Postcolonial Algeria

Djerbal, YASMINE 30 January 2014 (has links)
My thesis maps a genealogy of patriarchal structures that underpin Algerian history, culture, and institutions between the war of independence and the 1991-2001 civil war. More specifically, I contextualize the ways in which patriarchal lineages and origin stories—and thus the symbolic and structural promises of the family—underpin political struggle. In mapping these symbolic lineages found at work in the promise of independence, and the ways in which they underpin political struggle, I demonstrate how the war of independence reified and redefined familial and patriarchal kinships within political and social structures. I suggest that historical and social conditionings found at work at these different historical moments have legitimated, to a certain extent, the domination over women and a normalization of violence against them. My thesis examines social and political discourses at four central moments in Algerian history. Firstly, in the constructions of the Algerian nation-state post independence in 1962; secondly, in the Islamic Renaissance of the 1980s and the creation of the Family Code; and in a third moment, I draw connections between the Family Code, violent political clashes of 1990s and the civil war that ensued. Finally, I analyze laws and discourses created after the civil war and the resistance movements that have continuously contested power and oppression throughout these different periods. / Thesis (Master, Gender Studies) -- Queen's University, 2014-01-30 10:39:01.867
