Physical characteristics as performance indicators in surfing

Hayselden, Kirsten Jacqui-Anne January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to identify indictors of performance in surfing. Therefore the objectives of the study were to determine the following: {u100085} Anthropometric measures such as: height, weight, body proportions; {u100085} Flexibility measures such as: back extension, hip flexion, ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion; {u100085} Core stability; {u100085} Dynamic balance; {u100085} Explosive leg power; {u100085} Which of the physical characteristics measured discriminate between elite and non-elite surfers. To achieve the aim and objectives of this study, the literature pertaining to excellence in surfing, and the theory surrounding talent identification and the many factors that can contribute to success in sport, were reviewed. Potential criteria important for performance in surfing were identified and appropriate tests to assess these criteria were selected. An ex post facto quasi experimental design was used to assess which of the identified criteria best discriminated between elite and non-elite surfboard riders. The test battery included a personal information questionnaire and the assessment of: anthropometric variables, flexibility, core stability, dynamic balance and explosive leg power. These abovementioned physical characteristics were identified from the literature as the factors most important to success in surfing. Fifty five (55) surfers were assessed of which 28 were elite surfers and 27 were non-elite surfers. The results obtained from the evaluation of the samples were compared in terms of their descriptive statistics and the differences tested for statistical and practical significance. The variables of height, age started surfing, core stability, dynamic balance, number of days surfed per week and number of hours surfed per day were found to most discriminate between the elite and non-elite participants. Finally, a stepwise discriminant analysis was used to determine classification functions that could be used for future prediction purposes. The variables included in the discriminant analyses included height, age started surfing, number of years surfing, core stability and dynamic balance. To verify the prediction model a jack-knife procedure was performed. The results from the jack-knife procedure indicated that 85.5 perecent of the entire sample was correctly classified while 92.9 percent of the elite sample and 77.8 percent of the non-elite sample were correctly classified. Thus, the discriminant functions obtained can be used for predictive purposes.

Design and Evaluation of Accelerometer Based User Authentication Methods

Haitham, Seror January 2017 (has links)
Smartphone's are extremely popular and in high demand nowadays. They are easy to handle and very intuitive compared with old phones for end users. Approximately two billion people use Smartphones all over the world, so it is clear that these phones are very popular. One of the major issues of these smart phones is theft. What happens if someone steals your phone? Why should we try to secure our phones? The reason is that, even if the phone is stolen, the thief should not be able to open and use it through unlocking easily. People are generally careless while typing their password/pin code or drawing a pattern while others are watching. Maybe someone can see it just by standing next to or behind the person who is typing the pin or drawing the pattern. This scenario of getting the information is called shoulder surfing. Another scenario is to use a hidden camera, so-called Record monitoring. Shoulder surfing can be used by an attacker/observer to get passwords or PINs. Shoulder surfing is very easy to perform by just looking over the shoulder when a user is typing the PIN or drawing the unlock pattern. Record monitoring needs more preparation, but is not much more complicated to perform. Sometimes it also happens that the phone gets stolen and by seeing fingerprints or smudge patterns on the phone, the attacker can unlock it. These above two are general security threats for smart phone users. This thesis introduces some different approaches to overcome the above mentioned security threats in Smartphones. The basic aim is to make it more difficult to perform shoulder surfing or record monitoring, and these will not be easy to perform by the observer after switching to the new techniques introduced in the thesis. In this thesis, the usability of each method developed will be described and also future use of these approaches. There are a number of techniques by which a user can protect the phone from observation attacks. Some of these will be considered, and a user interface evaluation will be performed in the later phase of development. I will also consider some important aspects while developing the methods such as -user friendliness, Good UI concepts etc. I will also evaluate the actual security added by the methods, and the overall user impression. Two separate user studies have been performed, first one with students from the Computer Science department, and then one with students from other departments. The results indicate that students from Computer Science are more attracted to the new security solution than students from other departments.

While some societies face problems of crime and gang violence and are looking into different solutions, very little research exists on what community and architectural design and building can contribute to the reconstruction of the social fabric. This text explores how various elements and factors of architecture can be applied to reduce crime and gang violence activity in a city. By studying several manifestos and classic writings, this study will inquire the moral factor within architecture, the use of local materials and vernacular techniques, the definition of an architectural program that heals and the use of the members of the community hands for the construction of a building, the feel belonging and the ownership of a piece of architecture. La Libertad, El Salvador has been used as the place to put this into practice, being in the top most violent cities in the nation. The initiative of the architect to use the cities resources, such as bamboo as material to boost the economy through the architecture is explored to measure the impact in numbers by reducing rates of crime and gang activity in the city. / Master of Architecture / El Puerto de La Libertad in El Salvador is one of the best destinations in Central America for surfing with its great swells of waves and beautiful beaches. But there is a consistent tone within the visitors and residents’ comments about the city: they don’t feel as safe as they want to. The issue of insecurity and gang violence steadily increased after the Civil War in El Salvador ended in 1992. So, there have been different nation and city plans to mitigate the problem since then, but none has really aimed to inclusivity, most of them have been focused on fighting it with violence. My thesis seeks answers within architecture to help alleviate gang violence in the city of Puerto, through the design and development of a city master plan that connects different facilities centered in the farming, harvesting and use of bamboo for construction, furniture making and crafting. This will allow a boost in the town’s economy and the reconstruction of the social fabric. Finally joining the beauty of the blue of the ocean and the sky, with local materials and the hands of the members of the community for the design — and potentially building— of the Surfing Youth Center.

Akwa : en innovation inom vågsurfing / Akwa : a surfing innovation

Selin, Thomas January 2017 (has links)
This has been a project with the aim to develop a product which will solve what I consider to be the biggest difficulty and problem in the sport of wave surfing. That is to get enough speed to be able to stand up on the board and surf without the wave passing you. Today this is done only by paddling with your arms and this project has developed a product that helps the surfer to generate enough speed. This it makes wave surfing easier, especially for beginners and people with less physical ability. Another benefit with the product is that it enhances safety due to the possibility to start surfing further from the shore where stones and swimmers can be present. At the moment of standing up and starting to surf the risk of falling and possibly colliding with obstacles is the highest. A functional prototype has been developed that does this in an effective way, both economically and function wise. A general plan for development and introduction to the market has been developed.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Andre Aguiar Nogueira.pdf: 3981637 bytes, checksum: 217e8c7418e1710a5042b9ce7388b44e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-04-10 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Discusses the history of the relationship between body, nature, memory and culture in the Titanzinho Beach, east coast of Fortaleza. The clipping set is located mainly in the 1960s to 2010. The Beach Titanzinho, traditional fishing area, became internationally known in the 1970s for surfing. In the 1990s, however, factors such as rapid population growth and the crime outbreak provided the end of sporting events and the location has become stigmatized in the city. More recently, with the opening of surf schools and especially with the emergence of young native champions, have changed many important aspects in the local experience. Based on orality, magazines specializing in surfing, documents from the neighborhood associations and other research sources, discusses the formation of community, suggesting the emergence of surfing as body practice that emerges from new desires and sensibilities towards nature / Problematiza a história da articulação entre corpo, natureza, memória e cultura na Praia do Titanzinho, litoral leste de Fortaleza.

Development of a surfing leash : Development of ankle strap, rail saver and quick release / Utveckling av en surfing leash; Ankle band, rail saver och quick release

Enetjärn, Jacob January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to, with the help of supervisors and colleagues, develop a concept suggestion for a surfing leash that is better than the ones found on the market. The purpose was also to create a decision basis for Invencon AB for the continuance of the development of the concept. A planning phase started of the project. In this phase a project plan was created where, for example, the methods to be used were defined and their different time-schedules where specified. A feasibility study was then performed, and the information gathered from the study was summarized into a market requirement specification. This specification was used as a guiding document in the idea generation and during the development of the different concepts. A final concept was chosen at the end of the concept selection phase. This concept was presented to the project commissioner. A handover of relevant documents to the project commissioner was made to facilitate their decision on the continuance of the project. The developed concept has an integrated quick release in the ankle straps clamping function. This allows for the surfer to detach from the surfing leach both safer and faster in a dangerous situation. On both the ankle strap and on the railsaver there are developed attachments where the cord is to be attached. These attachments are designed so that each part of the conceptual surfing leash can be replaced individually. This allows for the surfer to only replace the damaged parts of his surfing leash. A technical requirement specification was also created. This aimed to facilitate the continuance of the project, if the decision is made to continue developing the concept. The conclusion of the project is that it is important to create a comprehensive view over the surfing leashes performance and to where focus should be aimed. A heavy-tailed process was therefore important for the end-result, i.e. to direct a lot of time to the phases that lead up to the concept selection phase. It was also clear that cooperation and discussion was important in a project that aims to create concepts. To be able to discuss ones thoughts and ideas with a project partner has facilitated both the generating and the validating of ideas. To work with a detailed plan and have a clear structure in the work was vital when working close to a project partner.

Surfando para a vida: um estudo sobre o papel do surfe como prÃtica pedagÃgica libertadora / Surfing for life:one study on the surfing role as liberating pedagogical practice

Liana Lima Rocha 23 June 2017 (has links)
Surfing, in the context of some social projects, has been presented as an educational practice for both social inclusion and education of young victims from a social order that is structured in a dehumanizing context permeated by social injustices. Those are projects that claim to use surfing as an educational practice, or a socially transforming agent, providing notions of citizenship and social awareness. From such standpoint, this research objective was studying surfing as an educational practice for human citizenship education and social inclusion of young people. The research field has been the social project: Instituto Povo do Mar (IPOM), which educational purpose is using surfing as one powerful educative actions principle for the youth who live nearby Titanzinho beach, in the city of Fortaleza, CearÃ, Brazil. The qualitative methodological orientation has been chosen for this research development, guided by the ethnographic approach and having as instruments: observation, documentary analysis and interviews. Four young people participating in the project collaborated in this research. Data analysis and the constitution of analytical categories occurred through the triad: surfing, youth and liberating education, with emphasis on Paulo Freire as the theoretical pillar in this revealing research process. Within this study, we have observed surfing teaching and learning experience beyond the transmission of technical knowledge of this body practice, being an educational action underpinned by views, dynamics and intentions towards surfing social and affective dimensions. However, parallel to these findings, we noticed that this experience still lacks critical-reflexive, emancipated and dialogical senses. On the one hand, we identified the meanings that young people attribute to surfing, from their voices, understanding such body practice as either a form of leisure, a means to reduce stress or a space for them to socialize. On the other hand, we have identified shared knowledge to the young people related to surfing as an educational body practice as technical knowledge, but also identified the existence of dialogue with human values, as well as some cross-disciplinary themes, within which environmental and health issues had been present more often in the participantsâ reports. The results of this research point out to surfing as an educational practice for citizenship human education and the social inclusion of young people.
