A Genealogy of Frankenstein's Creation: Appropriation, Hypermediacy, and Distributed Cognition in Shelley Jackson's Patchwork Girl, Victor Erice's Spirit of the Beehive, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Stafford, Richard Todd 13 June 2011 (has links)
Studies of Frankenstein-related cultural, literary, and filmic productions tend to either focus atomistically on a particular cultural artifact or construct rather strict chains of filiation between multiple artifacts. Media scholars have developed rich conceptual resources for describing cross-media appropriations in the realm of fandom (including fan fiction and slash fiction); however, many scholars of digital literary culture tend to describe the relationships between new media artifacts and their print counterparts in terms that promote what is "new" about these media forms without attending to how older media forms anticipate and enter into conversation with electronic multimedia formats. This paper suggests an alternative to this model that emphasizes the extent to which media forms remix, appropriate, and speak through other media and cultural artifacts. Studying Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, James Whale's classic Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein films, Victor Erice's Spirit of the Beehive, Bill Condon's Gods and Monsters, Shelley Jackson's Patchwork Girl, and some of the scholarly literature around the Frankenstein narrative, the construction of gender, and the discourse of post- humanity, this paper explores the mechanisms through which these artifacts draw attention to their participation in a greater "body" of Frankenstein culture. Additionally, this paper explores how these artifacts use what Bolter and Grusin have described as the logic of hypermediacy to emphasize the specificity of their deployment through a particular medium into a specific historical situation. / Master of Arts

Bezard, Rachel 16 April 2018 (has links)

Lebuis, Ariane 04 1900 (has links)
Introduction: Scaphocephaly, the most common unisutural craniosynostosis (1/2000), results from a premature fusion of the sagittal suture. Usually, cranial vault corrective surgery is performed during the first year of life. There is currently no scientific data regarding occlusion of scaphocephalic patients, or the potential effect of craniovault surgery on the occlusion. Objectives: The primary objective of this study is to describe occlusion in scaphocephalic patients and to compare with a general pediatric population matched for age and gender. The second objective is to compare the difference in occlusion of surgically treated scaphocephalic subgroup versus unoperated scaphocephalic subgroup. Methods: Ninety-one scaphocephalic patients (2-11 y.o.; 71 boys) from the craniofacial clinic of CHU Ste-Justine’s database formed our experimental group. All patients received an orthodontic assessment and were followed up. Among them, forty-four underwent craniovault surgery while forty-seven remained unoperated. Thirty-eight (33 boys; 17 operated) had lateral cephalometric radiographies, some of whom also had cephalometric growth follow-ups. Results: Clinical values for dental classification and overjet indicate an increased prevalence of class II malocclusions in scaphocephalic patients. However, cephalometric values indicative of skeletal class II malocclusions (i.e. N-A perp HP, N-B perp HP, N-Pog perp HP, Wits, N-A-Pog) remained within normal limits. Some cephalometric values present statistically significant differences between operated and unoperated patients (ANS-PNS t2, p=0.025; /1-FH t2, p=0.028), but these are individual variations not related to scaphocephaly. Conclusion: Scaphocephalic patients clinically present more class II malocclusions when compared with normal children. Radiographic values remain however within normal limits for both antero-posterior and transverse dimensions. Corrective craniovault surgery does not affect occlusion in these patients.

Tectonic evolution of the Yarlung suture zone, Lopu Range region, southern Tibet

Laskowski, Andrew K., Kapp, Paul, Ding, Lin, Campbell, Clay, Liu, XiaoHui 01 1900 (has links)
The Lopu Range, located similar to 600km west of Lhasa, exposes a continental high-pressure metamorphic complex beneath India-Asia (Yarlung) suture zone assemblages. Geologic mapping, 14 detrital U-Pb zircon (n=1895 ages), 11 igneous U-Pb zircon, and nine zircon (U-Th)/He samples reveal the structure, age, provenance, and time-temperature histories of Lopu Range rocks. A hornblende-plagioclase-epidote paragneiss block in ophiolitic melange, deposited during Middle Jurassic time, records Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous subduction initiation followed by Early Cretaceous fore-arc extension. A depositional contact between fore-arc strata (maximum depositional age 971Ma) and ophiolitic melange indicates that the ophiolites were in a suprasubduction zone position prior to Late Cretaceous time. Five Gangdese arc granitoids that intrude subduction-accretion melange yield U-Pb ages between 49 and 37Ma, recording Eocene southward trench migration after collision initiation. The south dipping Great Counter Thrust system cuts older suture zone structures, placing fore-arc strata on the Kailas Formation, and sedimentary-matrix melange on fore-arc strata during early Miocene time. The north-south, range-bounding Lopukangri and Rujiao faults comprise a horst that cuts the Great Counter Thrust system, recording the early Miocene (similar to 16Ma) transition from north-south contraction to orogen-parallel (E-W) extension. Five early Miocene (17-15Ma) U-Pb ages from leucogranite dikes and plutons record crustal melting during extension onset. Seven zircon (U-Th)/He ages from the horst block record 12-6Ma tectonic exhumation. JurassicEocene Yarlung suture zone tectonics, characterized by alternating episodes of contraction and extension, can be explained by cycles of slab rollback, breakoff, and shallow underthrustingsuggesting that subduction dynamics controlled deformation.

Estudo da força abdutora do quadril após artroplastia total com o uso de sutura transóssea ou transtendínea na via de acesso lateral direta / Study of the hip abductor strength after total hip arthroplasty using transosseous or transtendineous sutures in the direct lateral approach

Raddi, Thiago Bortoletto 06 September 2018 (has links)
Dysfunction of the hip abductor muscles is a concern among those using the direct lateral approach described by Hardinge for total hip arthroplasty (THA). It is not known whether the transosseous or the transtendineous sutures of the abductor muscles may influence the functional outcome of the THA. To quantify the strength of the abductor muscles in the operated patients is of great relevance, since these results could guide the best type of reinsertion of this musculature. We evaluated prospectively and randomly 32 patients with the purpose of quantifying the performance of hip abductor muscles after the THA using isometric analysis, comparing the reinsertion of the muscle mass by transosseous (TO) and transtendineous (TT) sutures using a Biodex System IV Pro® dynamometer (Biodex Medical System, Shirley, NY, USA) in the pre-operative period, and three and six months after THA. In addition, we evaluated the effect of transosseous and transtendineous sutures on the functional outcome of THA according to the Harris hip score (HHS) and correlated the abductor torque with the HHS in the sixth postoperative month of THA. After statistical analysis there were no differences between the type of suture and the abductor torque at different times, nor between the type of suture and the functional result according to the HHS. Finally, the HHS value presented negligible correlation with the torque value of the abductor muscles. Our results suggest that there is no superiority of one type of suture over the other in relation to abductor performance or functional outcome of the THA.

Paiva, Bruna Ribeiro January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Due to the high incidence of gastrointestinal surgeries in many species including humans, several techniques and materials have been continuously investigated to improving the procedures towards to avoid the most common complications, including dehiscence, leakage of contents, adhesions, peritonitis and sepsis. Barbed suture has recently come under focus for laparoscopic or video-assisted procedures, once it is a knotless suture and makes the suturing time shorter. In addition, the barbs around the suture promotes better adhesion to the tissue and uniform distribution of the tension. To compare three types of sutures performed with monofilament conventional or barbed suture, both absorbable, in relation to suture time, adhesion score, burst pressure and histology, jejunal sutures were performed in 12 pigs (barbed suture, continuous suture and simple interrupted). The groups (n = 4) were randomized, referring to the postoperative days for final evaluation (G3, G10 and G21). There was a difference on suturing time, when compared barbed (274.33 ± 70.48) and continuous (350.41 ± 87.25) to the interrupted pattern (469.00 ± 109.72). Among the 3 techniques at G3, 10 or 21, adherence scores and bursting pressure were not significantly different as well as histology evaluation, since no difference could be detected, in the grade of inflammation, fibrosis, tissue alignment, necrosis and neovascularization, at the suturing sites. No complications due to suture failures were observed. Ba... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Dental wear as an age assessment method : what can teeth reveal about diet?

Eriksson, Matilda January 2019 (has links)
The intention with this thesis is to improve the method to assess dental wear as an age indicator by examining its correlation with the closure of cranial suture and the influence diet has on dental wear. This thesis explores this correlation through a comparative study between a collection of skulls with unknown context and a control group with known context. Age assessment of cranial sutures is one of the oldest and most questionable methods of physical anthropology. The studies that were carried out in the beginning of the 21st century have shown a useful correlation between the cranial sutures closure and age assessment. Research on food is essential for understanding a society, and dental health has always been important for wellbeing. A difference between populations today and historical populations is the dental wear that causes infections. All these premises make this research interesting to explore further, to learn more about what the teeth can tell us about historic populations.

Sistema ceratométrico de apoio a suturas na córnea / Keratomery system of the support to corneal sutures

Saia, Paula Simone 27 November 2007 (has links)
A system for ophthalmic surgery support has been developed in order to minimize the residual astigmatism due to the induced irregular shape of the cornea by corneal suture. The system projects 48 light spots, from LEDs, displayed in a precise circle at the lachrymal film of the examined cornea. The displacement, the size and deformation of the reflected image of these light spots are analyzed providing the keratometry and the circularity of the suture. Measurements in the range of 32D - 55D (up to 23D of astigmatism are possible to be obtained) and a self-calibration system has been designed in order to keep the system calibrated. Steel precision spheres have been submitted to the system and the results show 99% of correlation with the fabricant\'s nominal values. The system has been tested in 13 persons in order to evaluate its clinical applicability and has been compared to a commercial keratometer Topcon OM-4. The correlation factors are 0,92 for the astigmatism and 0.99 for the associated axis. The system indicates that the surgeon should achieve circularity \'> OR =\' 98% in order to do not induce astigmatisms over 3D.

Cretaceous partial melting, deformation, and exhumation of the Potters Pond migmatite domain, west-central Idaho

Montz, William J. January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Seth C. Kruckenberg / The Potters Pond migmatite domain (PPMD) is a heterogeneous zone of migmatites located ~10 km southwest of Cascade, Idaho within the western Idaho shear zone (WISZ). The PPMD is the only known exposure of migmatites within the WISZ over its ~300 km length, occurring where the shear zone orientation changes from 020° south to 000° north of the migmatite domain. Structural mapping within the PPMD has identified multiple generations of migmatite with varied structural fabrics. Leucosome layers were sampled from distinct migmatite localities and morphologies (e.g., metatexite, diatexite) to determine the timing and duration of partial melting in the PPMD. U-Pb age determinations of zircon by means of LA-ICP-MS document two periods of protracted migmatite crystallization during the Early and Late Cretaceous. Early Cretaceous (ca. 145 to 128 Ma) migmatite crystallization ages are coeval with the collision and suturing of oceanic terranes of the Blue Mountains province with North America, and the formation of the Salmon River suture zone (SRSZ). Migmatite crystallization ages from ca. 104 to 90 Ma are associated with Late Cretaceous dextral transpression in the WISZ. Field observations and geochronology of cross cutting leucosome relationships are interpreted to record deep crustal deformation and anatexis associated with formation of the SRSZ, subsequently overprinted by solid-state deformation and renewed anatexis during the evolution of the WISZ. These data are the first direct evidence of the synmetamorphic fabric related to the SRSZ east of the initial Sr 0.706 isopleth, and that the WISZ is a temporally distinct overprinting structure. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College.
