Numerical generation of semisimple tortile categories coming from quantum groups

Bobtcheva, Ivelina 06 June 2008 (has links)
In this work we set up a general framework for exact computations of the associativity, commutativity and duality morphisms in a quite general class of tortile categories. The source of the categories we study is the work of Gelfand and Kazhdan, Examples of tensor categories, Invent.Mlath. 109 (l992), 595-617. They proved that, associated to the quantized enveloping algebra of any simple Lie group at a primitive prime root of unity, there is a semisimple monoidal braided category with finite number of simple objects. The prime p needs to be greater than the Coxeter number of the corresponding Lie algebra. We show that each of the Gelfand-Kazhdan categories has at least two subcategories which are tortile, and offer algorithms for computing the associativity, commutativity and duality morphisms in any of those categories. A careful choice of the bases of the simple objects and of the product of two such objects rnake the exact computations possible. The algorithms have been implemented in Mathemetica and tested for the categories A₂,p=5, A₃,p=7, A₄.p=7, C₂,p=7, and G₂,p=11. This work was supported by the Center for Mathematical Computations through NSF grant DMS-9207973. / Ph. D.

Qualitative symbology: an evaluation of the pictorial signs of the National Park Service as cartographic symbols

Johnson, Gregory B. January 1983 (has links)
This study examines whether the use of pictorial signs as cartographic symbols are aids for map users in the comprehension of intended referent meaning. A history of the development and use of pictorial signs as cartographic symbols is traced from the origins of international highway signage to the Pictorial Sign/Symbol system of the National Park Service. The theoretical basis for examining qualitative symbolism in cartography is outlined as are the methodological evolution of the study and principles of symbol design. The NPS signs are tested in and out of a map environment to determine communication effectiveness. Results indicate that the NPS signs perform well as cartographic symbols for American college students and that map legends are used when provided. It is suggested that future testing of pictorial symbology might use semiotic and psychophysical research approaches to examine other coexisting symbol systems and discover more specific design principles for pictorial symbols. / Master of Science

Norval, Martha Susanna 11 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / This research describes the coats of arms and emblems of hospitals and nursing colleges in the Republic of South Africa, an aspect of nursing's heritage and history have not yet been described. Data were collected by means of questionnaires. An extensive literature review on heraldics and an analysis of the meanings contained in the symbols appearing on these devices were done. The analysis resulted in the following; the uniqueness of the individual devices, the development of nursing and nursing education, the influence of values, norms, ideals, culture, religion and history on the selection of symbols. The heraldic meanings of symbols and the meanings indicated in the questionnaires were compared with the identified core concepts for nursing. The overall finding was that any congruence was purely circumstantial. / Health Studies / M.A. (Verpleegkunde)

A Comparison of the graphic symbol utterances arranged by children with little or no functional speech and children with typical development

Penkler, Stephanie Nandl January 2014 (has links)
The structure of graphic symbol utterance constructed by children with typical development and also children with little or no functional speech often differs considerably from spoken utterances. Whether the structure of graphic symbol utterances constructed by these two groups is influenced by similar factors is as yet unknown, as a systematic comparison between the two groups of children has not been conducted. This study aimed to investigate and compare the graphic symbol utterances arranged by children with little or no functional speech with those arranged by their typically developing peers when they were matched according to receptive language age. The utterances were analysed in terms of three variables, namely content, order and intelligibility. The results indicated that children with little or no functional speech do not differ significantly to children with typical development on tasks of graphic symbol utterance construction. The results also indicated that children with higher receptive language age start to use the spoken language word order as a model when arranging graphic symbol utterances more than children with lower receptive language age. The findings suggest that receptive language age plays a role in graphic symbol utterance constructions. The use of structures that do not follow spoken language may be explained by effects of the visual modality. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / gm2014 / Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) / unrestricted

Andersson, Tova January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine how the construction of the swedish national self-image can be interpreted in relation to the protests against the russian anti-gay laws, leading up to the olympic games in Sotji 2014. I form a basis for my analysis in Jasbir K. Puars conceptual frame of homonationalism and examine the swedish political action Live and Let Love that took place at Stockholms Stadion in the fall of 2013. The analysis shows how the inclusion of a homonormative homosexuality becomes an important factor for the construction of Sweden as an open and tolerant nation in contrast to Russia as a non tolerant nation. This construction of "us" and the "Other" manifests through a discourse of tolerance. The national sense of community is formed through interaction between national symbols and symbols of the LGBT community.

En resa utan slutdestination : En fallstudie om chefers användning av symboler och meningsskapande vid kontinuerlig organisationsförändring / A journey without a final destination

Forsberg, Pauline, Vogiatzi, Amanda January 2016 (has links)
Introduction: Continuous organizational change is increasing in today's organizations, and is characterized by change having no beginning nor end. In liaison with the ongoing organizational change being implemented in organizations it can cause employees feeling confused and ambiguous, since change occurs all the time. In these situations, sensemaking constitute an essential factor, which is a key aspect of symbolic leadership. The study therefore examines symbolic leadership in this context, and focuses on how managers use symbols and sensemaking to reduce the ambiguity that arises. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to develop an understanding of in what way leaders practice symbols and sensemaking during continuous organizational change Method: By using a qualitative research method, we conducted a case study with an abductive approach. The empirical material was collected through semi-structured interviews and from the inspiration of an ethnographic study. In order to create a developed understanding of how managers are working in the daily activities, the study use a hermeneutic approach. Conclusion: The findings of the study has concluded that symbols are utilized by managers in order to create meaning, but also to transmit togetherness, security and a mutual vision. The symbols are utilized through communication, visibility and by organizing various events. Sensemaking is thus important since it mediates how employees can feel meaningfulness for the tasks to be executed.

Sémióza sebeprezentace sportovních klubů AC Sparta Praha a HC Sparta Praha v sezoně 2013/2014 / Semiosis of the self-prezentation of sports clubs AC Sparta Praha and HC Sparta Praha in the season 2013/2014

Drobná, Šárka January 2015 (has links)
Diploma thesis deals with semiotics of advertising media campaigns of sport clubs AC Sparta Praha and HC Sparta Praha in the season 2013/2014. Both of the clubs celebrated an anniversary this season: AC Sparta Praha celebrated 120 years since its foundation, HC Sparta Praha celebrated 110 years. That was a reason why media campaigns were intensive and referred to the glorious history of the clubs. The Diploma thesis research is focused on meanings encoded into the campaigns and attempts to find out which verbal and non-verbal signs create the term "Sparta". The Author tries to find out if there is the same semiotic base for both clubs which operate with the same name and elementary signs. Diploma thesis defines contemporary "myth of Sparta" in Czech sport area. Theoretical part occupies with contemporary status of sport in the society, analytical part deals with the media campaigns of both clubs from semiotic perspective.

Tamurt : un paysage emblématique et représentatif : la cas des proverbes kabyles / Tamurt : a symbolic landscape and representative : the case of Kabylia proverbs

Hammi, Arab 27 March 2013 (has links)
The term Tamurt in the Berber (Amazigh) culture is endowed with many acceptances : it habitually designates a set of people possessing the same identity, a region or territory structured by the same language, and the same origin ; it is also related to the land, landscape or space and to what is present in the same entity : the values, traditions, or systems of organization. The Kabyl proverbs illustrate this polysemy in a good way and they still at this time and age have their entire place in the every day life of the inhabitants of Tifrit Nait Oumalek village situated in the Akfadou Mount near Tizi-Ouzou . The monography that we have realised supported by a survey that associates in situ observations, semi-directive interviews, and questionnaires suggests to clarify, through the analysis of the processes of transmission and identification, the relations with tradition and modernity. The rereading of the Mohandien poetry and that of the more contemporary writings of Mouloud Feraoun, Mouloud Mammeri, or Ait Menguellet enriches the discussion and permits to better apprehend the question of orality, symbolism, and intergeneration dynamics.
