Resistance training (RT) when associated with the caloric restriction diet (CR) has been shown to have important effects on blood pressure and the aortic artery, minimizing complications due to menopause, such as hypertension. Aim: In this study, we investigated the effects of Ovariectomy and the Resistance Training, Caloric Restriction, and the association of both intervention in systolic blood pressure, matrix metaproteinase-2 activity, aortic vascular reactivity and morphological alterations in ovariectomized Holtzman rats. Material and methods: Fifty female Holtzman rats were subjected to ovariectomy and Sham surgery and distributed into: Sham-sedentary; Ovariectomized-sedentary; Ovariectomized- Resistance Training; Ovariectomized-Caloric Restriction; and Ovariectomized-Resistance Training and Caloric Restriction groups. Resistance Training and 30% Caloric Restriction protocols were performed by 13-weeks. Systolic blood pressure, acetylcholine, and sodium nitroprusside induced relaxation of aortic rings; the hematoxylin-eosin stain used to highlight the aortas wall cross-sectional area and the matrix metaproteinase-2 activity, insulin tolerance test and aorta vessel remodeling were analyzed. Results: We observed that, Ovariectomy increased systolic blood pressure, decreased potency in dependent and independent endothelium relaxation and matrix metaproteinase-2 activity, promoted insulin resistance and aorta vessel remodeling in cross-sectional area, media to lumen ratio, collagen content and alter structure and elastic fibers of the vessel. However, the association of exercise and diet prevent the increase systolic blood pressure, improved the relaxation potency in dependent and independent endothelium relaxation, elevated the matrix metaproteinase-2 activity, increased the aorta cross-sectional area, media to lumen ratio, decreased collagen content and alter elastic fibers in aorta vessel wall. Conclusion: Our study reveled that the association of resistance training and caloric restriction can prevent the hypertensive condition, improve vascular function, activate matrix metaproteinase-2, and produce a beneficial hypertrophic remodeling with increased vascular compliance in ovariectomy in Holtzman rats. / FAPESP: 2012/21087-4

System on fabrics utilising distributed computing

Kandaswamy, Partheepan January 2018 (has links)
The main vision of wearable computing is to make electronic systems an important part of everyday clothing in the future which will serve as intelligent personal assistants. Wearable devices have the potential to be wearable computers and not mere input/output devices for the human body. The present thesis focuses on introducing a new wearable computing paradigm, where the processing elements are closely coupled with the sensors that are distributed using Instruction Systolic Array (ISA) architecture. The thesis describes a novel, multiple sensor, multiple processor system architecture prototype based on the Instruction Systolic Array paradigm for distributed computing on fabrics. The thesis introduces new programming model to implement the distributed computer on fabrics. The implementation of the concept has been validated using parallel algorithms. A real-time shape sensing and reconstruction application has been implemented on this architecture and has demonstrated a physical design for a wearable system based on the ISA concept constructed from off-the-shelf microcontrollers and sensors. Results demonstrate that the real time application executes on the prototype ISA implementation thus confirming the viability of the proposed architecture for fabric-resident computing devices.

Systolic design space exploration of EEA-based inversion over binary and ternary fields

Hazmi, Ibrahim 29 August 2018 (has links)
Cryptographic protocols are implemented in hardware to ensure low-area, high speed and reduced power consumption especially for mobile devices. Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is the most commonly used public-key cryptosystem and its performance depends heavily on efficient finite field arithmetic hardware. Finding the multiplicative inverse (inversion) is the most expensive finite field operation in ECC. The two predominant algorithms for computing finite field inversion are Fermat’s Little Theorem (FLT) and Extended Euclidean Algorithm (EEA). EEA is reported to be the most efficient inversion algorithm in terms of performance and power consumption. This dissertation presents a new reformulation of EEA algorithm, which allows for speedup and optimization techniques such as concurrency and resource sharing. Modular arithmetic operations over GF(p) are introduced for small values of p, observing interesting figures, particularly for modular division. Whereas, polynomial arithmetic operations over GF(pm) are discussed adequately in order to examine the potential for processes concurrency. In particular, polynomial division and multiplication are revisited in order to derive their iterative equations, which are suitable for systolic array implementation. Consequently, several designs are proposed for each individual process and their complexities are analyzed and compared. Subsequently, a concurrent divider/multiplier-accumulator is developed, while the resulting systolic architecture is utilized to build the EEA-based inverter. The processing elements of our systolic architectures are created accordingly, and enhanced to accommodate data management throughout our reformulated EEA algorithm. Meanwhile, accurate models for the complexity analysis of the proposed inverters are developed. Finally, a novel, fast, and compact inverter over binary fields is proposed and implemented on FPGA. The proposed design outperforms the reported inverters in terms of area and speed. Correspondingly, an EEA-based inverter over ternary fields is built, showing the lowest area-time complexity among the reported inverters. / Graduate

Bioinformatics databases used for sequence comparison and local sequence alignment are growing exponentially.

Valadão, Tainá Fabri Carneiro January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The favorable effects of a combined exercise program (CEP) in patients with heart failure (HF) and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (RLVE) are well recognized in the literature. There is consensus that physical exercise (PE) improves quality of life (QOL) and functional capacity (FC) in patients with HF. It is believed that the beneficial effects of PE are not due to the improvement of LVEF. On the other hand, some studies indicated beneficial effects of PE on LV diastolic function. Given the importance of LV filling pressure in symptoms of HF patients, the hypothesis of this study was that an CEP supervised program should promote improvement in diastolic function in patients with HF with LVEF <50% and this effect may be associated with decreased symptoms, reflecting improvement in FC and QOL in these patients. Objective: evaluate the effect of ECF in diastolic function in patients with reduced LVEF IC and investigate whether the improvement in diastolic function is r associated with improvement in symptoms, functional capacity and quality of life of these patients. Methodology: Prospective clinical trial, randomized and controlled, which included patients with HF and LVEF <50%, above 18 years. The sample consisted of 42 patients, divided into two groups matched for age and sex: the control group (CG) n = 20 - submitted to prescription in clinical practice of regular physical activity, not supervised. Shortest Length Geodesics on Closed Hyperbolic Surfaces

Sanki, Bidyut January 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Given a hyperbolic surface, the set of all closed geodesics whose length is minimal form a graph on the surface, in fact a so called fat graph, which we call the systolic graph. The central question that we study in this thesis is: which fat graphs are systolic graphs for some surface -we call such graphs admissible. This is motivated in part by the observation that we can naturally decompose the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces based on the associated systolic graphs. A systolic graph has a metric on it, so that all cycles on the graph that correspond to geodesics are of the same length and all other cycles have length greater than these. This can be formulated as a simple condition in terms of equations and inequations for sums of lengths of edges. We call this combinatorial admissibility. Our first main result is that admissibility is equivalent to combinatorial admissibility. This is proved using properties of negative curvature, specifically that polygonal curves with long enough sides, in terms of a lower bound on the angles, are close to geodesics. Using the above result, it is easy to see that a subgraph of an admissible graph is admissible. Hence it suffices to characterize minimal non-admissible fat graphs. Another major result of this thesis is that there are infinitely many minimal non-admissible fat graphs (in contrast, for instance, to the classical result that there are only two minimal non-planar graphs).

Yassine, Zeina 16 June 2016 (has links)
In 1949, C. Loewner proved in an unpublished work that the two-torus T satisfies an optimal systolic inequality relating the area of the torus to the square of its systole. By a systole here we mean the smallest length of a noncontractible loop in T. Furthermore, the equality is attained if and only if the torus is flat hexagonal. This result led to whatwas called later systolic geometry. In this thesis, we study several systolic-like inequalities. These inequalities involve the minimal length of various curves and not merely the systole.First we obtain three optimal conformal geometric inequalities on Riemannian Klein bottles relating the area to the product of the lengths of the shortest noncontractible loops in different free homotopy classes. We describe the extremal metrics in each conformal class. Then we prove optimal systolic inequalities on Finsler Mobius bands relating the systoleand the height of the Mobius band to its Holmes-Thompson volume. We also establish an optimalsystolic inequality for Finsler Klein bottles with symmetries. We describe extremal metric families in both cases. Finally, we prove a critical systolic inequality on genus two surface. More precisely, it is known that the genus two surface admits a piecewise flat metric with conical singularities which is extremal for the systolic inequality among all nonpositively curved Riemannian metrics. We show that this piecewise flat metric is also critical for slow metric variations, this time without curvature restrictions, for another type of systolic inequality involving the lengths of the shortest noncontractible loops in different free homotopy classes. The free homotopy classes considered correspond to those of the systolic loops and the second-systolic loops of the extremal surface
