Numerical Study of Polymers in Turbulent Channel Flow

Bagheri, Faranggis January 2010 (has links)

The phenomenon of drag reduction by polymers in turbulent flow has beenstudied over the last 60 years. New insight have been recently gained by meansof numerical simulation of dilute polymer solution at moderate values of theturbulent Reynolds number and elasticity. In this thesis, we track elastic parti-cles in Lagrangian frame in turbulent channel flow at Reτ = 180, by tracking, where the single particle obeys the FENE (finite extendible nonlinear elastic)formulation for dumbbel model. The feedback from polymers to the flow is notconsidered, while the Lagrangian approach enables us to consider high valuesof polymer elasticity. In addition, the finite time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE)of the flow is computed tracking infinitesimal material elements advected bythe flow. Following the large deviation theory, the Cramer’s function of theprobability density function of the FTLE for large values of time intervals isstudied at different wall-normal positions. The one-way effect of the turbulentflow on polymers is investigated by looking at the elongation and orientation ofthe polymers, with different relaxation times, across the channel. The confor-mation tensor of the polymers deformation which is an important contributionin the momentum balance equation is calculated by averaging in wall-parallelplanes and compared to theories available in the literature.
/ QC 20100706

Wallander, Rolf January 2010 (has links)

Key Challenges in Decision Making for Automotive E/E Architectures

Wallin, Peter January 2008 (has links)
The amount of electronics in vehicles is growing quickly, thus systems are becoming increasingly complex making the engineering of these software intensive systems more and more difficult. In particular, an architecture supporting the business goals is a prerequisite for successful design. In this thesis two case studies have been made including three automotive companies with purpose to investigate the key issues related to real-world decisions when developing Electrical and Electronic (E/E) system architectures in the automotive industry. The results show that many of the identified issues relate to non technical areas such as organization, process, methods and tools, and management. Examples of identified issues are the deficient understanding of the electrical system and software at management level, and the lack of a specific process for architecture development. To cope with these issues we suggest the following actions: Educate management, increase the use of structured decision making, improve the architecture development process, clarify responsibilities in the organization and clarify development strategies. As a possible solution to one of the suggested actions we have developed a method to evaluate how new functionality is successfully integrated into an existing architecture. Themethod is a combination of the Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method, ATAM, and the Analytical Hierarchy Process, AHP. The method firstly supports a structured way of listing system goals, and secondly, it also supports the making of design decisions. / Business Oriented Concept Development of Electronic System Architecture and Platforms in Vehicles

ATSVIS : Airport Traffic Surveillance and Visual Information System

Hunt, Daniel, Olsson, Magnus January 2007 (has links)

/
The primary objective with the thesis is to formulate a concept on how to do the air traffic safer, both on the land and in the air. The concept got the name ATSVIS, which stands for Airport Traffic Surveillance and Visual Information System. ATSVIS is intended to give instructions what new ideas and new technology can do, to allocate the pilot and the traffic management. ATSVIS also intend to automate and to simplify the air traffic. The concept is formulated after own ideas and from interviews with people in the flight industry. The central work of the thesis is a simulator in which one can show and to examine how ATSVIS functions work.

Komponentdatabas samt felanalys av luftsystemkomponenter

Andersson, Johan, Johansson, Fredrik January 2007 (has links)

/
STOTP-M (SAS Component) have received air-rigs from SAS-Braathens Stavanger and the task is to put them in use so different type of components can be tested.

STOTP-M has never before performed any component testing in air-rigs and is now creating procedures for documentation of this.

As a part of this work a database has to be created so that the person who is performing the tests can store the results.

This information will later determine the level of disassembly for different types of failures. To determine the level of disassembly for different types of failures is today very hard because the shop has never performed earlier maintenance of this kind.

When a component enter the shop it can be very hard to find the faulty parts that caused the failure. Based on this a pre-test is accomplished where you deside what actions to perform in the shop.

In this thesis a database is created where you can store the data from the pre-test and also the performed work on the component. This will in the future give a good image of what parts in the component that will break down depending on what type of reason for removal that have occured.

In addition to the database an failure analysis on three pneumatical components have been performed. This analysis includes a failure description for different types of reason for removals, and what actions to implement for each shop visit.

The results from the analysis will give a better maintenance of the three analysed components. In the future the database will in effective way store and supply information from all the components, which will lead to more effective measures.

Because the failure analysis is with consideration to reason for removal it will give the failure indications on the component already in the incoming test, and with the help of the database the mechanic will have the procedures for the test.

Aircraft Systems Modeling : Model Based Systems Engineering in Avionics Design and Aircraft Simulation

Andersson, Henric January 2009 (has links)

Aircraft developers like other development and manufacturing companies, are experiencing increasing complexity in their products and growing competition in the global market. One way to confront the challenges is to make the development process more efficient and to shorten time to market for new products/variants by using design and development methods based on models. Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is introduced to, in a structured way, support engineers with aids and rules in order to engineer systems in a new way.

In this thesis, model based strategies for aircraft and avionics development are studied. A background to avionics architectures and in particular Integrated Modular Avionics is described. The integrating discipline Systems Engineering, MBSE and applicable standards are also described. A survey on available and emerging modeling techniques and tools, such as Hosted Simulation, is presented and Modeling Domains are defined in order to analyze the engineering environment with all its vital parts to support an MBSE approach.

Time and money may be saved by using modeling techniques that enable understanding of the engineering problem, state-of-the-art analysis and team communication, with preserved or increased quality and sense of control. Dynamic simulation is an activity increasingly used in aerospace, for several reasons; to prove the product concept, to validate stated requirements, and to verify the final implementation. Simulation is also used for end-user training, with specialized training simulators, but with the same underlying models. As models grow in complexity, and the set of simulation platforms is expanded, new needs for specification, model building and configuration support arise, which requires a modeling framework to be efficient.
