An investigation into whether the weekly national newspapers reported unethically on South Africa's 2014 general elections: a critical discourse analysis of the City Press, Sunday Times and The Mail and Guardian

Text in English / This thesis investigates whether or not the press reported unethically on South Africa’s 2014 General Elections in the weekly national newspapers the City Press, Sunday Times and the Mail & Guardian. This study was undertaken on the basis of the ongoing contention between the press and the state which has resulted in polarised positions between both institutions amid accusations of press bias. It has given voice to measures to regulate the press through a Media Appeals Tribunal (MAT) and proposed state regulation. This could negatively impact free speech, public interest and ultimately democracy. This researcher contends that this will not be in the best interest of South Africa. Through this study, it is argued that an ethical press that executes a libertarian duty to society, integrating a watchdog role over the state, while simultaneously overseeing its social responsibility to society, upholds the welfare of society and democracy and should therefore not be regulated by the state. The elections thus forms an important platform for the press to demonstrate unbiased ethical reportage to the state in the wake of being regulated and prove its fundamental role in society’s interest and democracy. Therefore, to determine whether the election coverage was ethical or unethical, the problem investigated whether the press, that is, the print medium in the form of the newspaper, reported truthfully, in a balanced manner and independently for South Africa’s 2014 General Elections, upholding its watchdog and social responsibility roles. This was done through a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of the front-page news reports of the aforementioned national newspapers for the cross sectional time-frame of 13 April to 11 May, 2014. This study argues that language is the most important channel of communication for the exchange of ideas and can be used as an instrument to calculatedly manipulate message and reinforce a particular viewpoint. Hence, it contends that CDA can effectively be utilised as a conceptual framework for language analysis to determine unethical press coverage by journalists. The study identifies and applies two significant theoretical models that is, the Libertarian and Social Responsibility models for the elections which further serves as a form of triangulation to verify the results of the CDA. The study challenges the conventions of a distinct libertarian or a social responsibility model for the press, arguing that both models are not mutually exclusive for the elections. The analysis shows that the press apply both social responsibility and libertarian roles simultaneously in election reporting. It further maps out the incorporation of the developmental journalism model where the press upholds the best interests of both the electorate and the state ethically, without the requirement of a state-regulated media. / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication Science)

Batch Processsor Scheduling - A Class Of Problems In Steel Casting Foundries

Modern manufacturing systems need new types of scheduling methods. While traditional scheduling methods are primarily concerned with sequencing of jobs, modern manufacturing environments provide the additional possibility to process jobs in batches. This adds to the complexity of scheduling. There are two types of batching namely: (i) serial batching (jobs may be batched if they share the same setup on a machine and one job is processed at a time. The machine which processes jobs in this manner is called as discrete processor) and (ii) parallel batching (several jobs can be processed simultaneously on a machine at a time. The machine which processes jobs in this manner is called as batch processor or batch processing machine). Parallel batching environments have attracted wide attention of the researchers working in the field of scheduling. Particularly, taking inspiration from studies of scheduling batch processors in semiconductor manufacturing [Mathirajan and Sivakumar (2006b) and Venkataramana (2006)] and in steel casting industries [Krishnaswamy et al. (1998), Shekar (1998) and Mathirajan (2002)] in the Management Studies Department of Indian Institute of Science, this thesis addresses a special problem on scheduling batch processor, observed in the steel casting manufacturing. A fundamental feature of the steel casting industry is its extreme flexibility, enabling castings to be produced with almost unlimited freedom in design over an extremely wide range of sizes, quantities and materials suited to practically every environment and application. Furthermore, the steel casting industry is capital intensive and highly competitive. From the viewpoint of throughput and utilization of the important and costly resources in the foundry manufacturing, it was felt that the process-controlled furnace operations for the melting and pouring operations as well as the heat-treatment furnace operations are critical for meeting the overall production schedules. The two furnace operations are batch processes that have distinctive constraints on job-mixes in addition to the usual capacity and technical constraints associated with any industrial processes. The benefits of effective scheduling of these batch processes include higher machine utilization, lower work-in-process (WIP) inventory, shorter cycle time and greater customer satisfaction [Pinedo (1995)]. Very few studies address the production planning and scheduling models for a steel foundry, considering the melting furnace of the pre-casting stage as the core foundry operation [Voorhis et al. (2001), Krishnaswamy et al. (1998) and Shekar (1998)]. Even though the melting and pouring operations may be considered as the core of foundry operations and their scheduling is of central importance, the scheduling of heat-treatment furnaces is also of considerable importance. This is because the processing time required at the heat treatment furnace is often longer compared to other operations in the steel-casting foundry and therefore considerably affects the scheduling, overall flow time and WIP inventory. Further, the heat-treatment operation is critical because it determines the final properties that enable components to perform under demanding service conditions such as large mechanical load, high temperature and anti-corrosive processing. It is also important to note that the heat-treatment operation is the only predominantly long process in the entire steel casting manufacturing process, taking up a large part of total processing time (taking up to a few days as against other processes that typically take only a few hours). Because of these, the heat-treatment operation is a major bottleneck operation in the entire steel casting process. The jobs in the WIP inventory in front of heat-treatment furnace vary widely in sizes (few grams to a ton) and dimensions (from 10 mm to 2000 mm). Furthermore, castings are primarily classified into a number of job families based on the alloy type, such as low alloy castings and high alloy castings. These job families are incompatible as the temperature requirement for low alloy and high alloy vary for similar type of heat-treatment operation required. These job families are further classified into various sub-families based on the type of heat treatment operations they undergo. These sub-families are also incompatible as each of these sub-families requires a different combination of heat-treatment operation. The widely varying job sizes, job dimensions and multiple incompatible job family characteristic introduce a high degree of complexity into scheduling heat-treatment furnace. Scheduling of heat-treatment furnace with multiple incompatible job families can have profound effect on the overall production rate as the processing time at heat-treatment operation is very much longer. Considering the complexity of the process and time consumed by the heat treatment operation, it is imperative that efficient scheduling of this operation is required in order to maximize throughput and to enhance productivity of the entire steel casting manufacturing process. This is of importance to the firm. The concerns of the management in increasing the throughput of the bottleneck machine, thereby increasing productivity, motivated us to adopt the scheduling objective of makespan. In a recent observation of heat-treatment operations in a couple of steel casting industries and the research studies reported in the literature, we noticed that the real-life problem of dynamic scheduling of heat-treatment furnace with multiple incompatible job families, non-identical job sizes, non-identical job dimensions, non-agreeable release times and due dates to maximize the throughput, higher utilization and minimize the work-in-process inventory is not at all addressed. However, there are very few studies [Mathirajan et al. (2001, 2002, 2004a, 2007)] which have addressed the problem of scheduling of heat-treatment furnace with incompatible job families and non-identical job sizes to maximize the utilization of the furnace. Due to the difference between the real-life situation on dynamic scheduling of heat-treatment furnace of the steel casting manufacturing and the research reported on the same problem, we identified three new class of batch processor problems, which are applicable to a real-life situation based on the type of heat-treatment operation(s) being carried out and the type of steel casting industry (small, medium and large scale steel casting industry) and this thesis addresses these new class of research problems on scheduling of batch processor. The first part of the thesis addresses our new Research Problem (called Research Problem 1) of minimizing makespan (Cmax) on a batch processor (BP) with single job family (SJF), non-identical job sizes (NIJS), and non-identical job dimensions (NIJD). This problem is of interest to small scale steel casting industries performing only one type of heat treatment operation such as surface hardening. Generally, there would be only a few steel casting industries which offer such type of special heat-treatment operation and thus the customer is willing to accept delay in the completion of his orders. So, the due date issues are not important for these types of industries. We formulate the problem as Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model and validate the proposed MILP model through a numerical example. In order to understand the computational intractability issue, we carry out a small computational experiment. The results of this experiment indicate that the computational time required, as a function of problem size, for solving the MILP model is non-deterministic and non-polynomial. Due to the computational intractability of the proposed MILP model, we propose five variants of a greedy heuristic algorithm and a genetic algorithm for addressing the Research Problem 1. We carry out computational experiments to obtain the performance of heuristic algorithms based on two perspectives: (i) comparison with optimal solution on small scale instances and (ii) comparison with lower bound for large scale instances. We choose five important problem parameters for the computational experiment and propose a suitable experimental design to generate pseudo problem instances. As there is no lower bound (LB) procedure for the Research Problem1, in this thesis, we develop an LB procedure that provides LB on makespan by considering both NIJS and NIJD characteristics together. Before using the proposed LB procedure for evaluating heuristic algorithms, we conduct a computational experiment to obtain the quality of the LB on makespan in comparison with optimal makespan on number of small scale instances. The results of this experiment indicate that the proposed LB procedure is efficient and could be used to obtain LB on makespan for any large scale problem. In the first perspective of the evaluation of the performance of the heuristic algorithms proposed for Research Problem 1, the proposed heuristic algorithms are run through small scale problem instances and we record the makespan values. We solve the MILP model to obtain optimal solutions for these small scale instances. For comparing the proposed heuristic algorithms we use the performance measures: (a) number of times the proposed heuristic algorithm solution equal to optimal solution and (b) average loss with respect to optimal solution in percentage. In the second perspective of the evaluation of the performance of the heuristic algorithms, the proposed heuristic algorithms are run through large scale problem instances and we record the makespan values. The LB procedure is also run through these problem instances to obtain LB on makespan. For comparing the performance of heuristic algorithms with respect to LB on makespan, we use the performance measures: (a) number of times the proposed heuristic algorithm solution equal to LB on makespan (b) average loss with respect to LB on makespan in percentage, (c) average relative percentage deviation and (d) maximum relative percentage deviation. We extend the Research Problem 1 by including additional job characteristics: job arrival time to WIP inventory area of heat-treatment furnace, due date and additional constraint on non-agreeable release time and due date (NARD). Due date considerations and the constraint on non-agreeable release times and due date (called Research Problem 2) are imperative to small scale steel casting foundries performing traditional but only one type of heat treatment operation such as annealing where due date compliance is important as many steel casting industries offer such type of heat treatment operations. The mathematical model, LB procedure, greedy heuristic algorithm and genetic algorithm proposed for Research Problem 1, including the computational experiments, are appropriately modified and\or extended for addressing Research Problem 2. Finally, we extend the Research Problem 2 is by including an additional real life dimension: multiple incompatible job families (MIJF). This new Research Problem (called Research Problem 3) is more relevant to medium and large scale steel casting foundries performing more than one type of heat treatment operations such as homogenizing and tempering, normalizing and tempering. The solution methodologies, the LB procedure and the computational experiments proposed for Research Problem 2 are further modified and enriched to address the Research Problem 3. From the detailed computational experiments conducted for each of the research problems defined in this study, we observe that: (a) the problem parameters considered in this study have influence on the performance of the heuristic algorithms, (b) the proposed LB procedure is found to be efficient, (c) the proposed genetic algorithm outperforms among the proposed heuristic algorithms (but the computational time required for genetic algorithm increases as problem size keeps increasing), and (d) in case the decision maker wants to choose an heuristic algorithm which is computationally most efficient algorithm among the proposed algorithms, the variants of greedy heuristic algorithms : SWB, SWB(NARD), SWB(NARD&MIJF) is relatively the best algorithm for Research Problem 1, Research Problem 2 and Research Problem 3 respectively.

Relationen mellan kalkyleringsmetoder, Lean och produktionsflöden av kundanpassad karaktär : Hur kostnadsprecisionen i förkalkyleringen i denna typ av produktion kan ökas samt vilken kalkyleringsmetod som passar bäst

Då tillverkningsindustrin går mot en högre grad av kundanpassning och implementering av Lean, samtidigt som föråldrade traditionella kalkyleringsmetoder fortfarande används i moderna industriföretag, är det intressant att utreda relationerna mellan produktionsflöden av kundanpassad karaktär, Lean samt olika kalkyleringsmetoder. Syftet är att öka kostnadsprecisionen i förkalkylen för ett produktionsflöde av kundanpassad och Lean karaktär och beskriva en generaliserbar arbetsprocess för detta. Syftet är även att ta fram generella rekommendationer för val av kalkyleringsmetod genom att utifrån denna produktions karaktär genomföra en jämförande analys av kalkyleringsmetoder (traditionella kalkylmetoder, ABC och kalkylering enligt Lean). Genom en litteraturstudie samt en fallstudie av ett produktionsflöde med många varianter och inslag av Lean har båda syftena uppfyllts. Fallstudien har utförts genom intervjuer och observationer. Problem och positiva faktorer som enligt litteratur karaktäriserar produktion av kundanpassade produkter har även återfunnits på fallföretaget. Det sambandet har kunnat användas för att stödja analysen av relationerna. Relationerna mellan kalkyleringsmetoder, Lean samt produktionsflöden av kundanpassad karaktär har analyserats genom att jämföra litteratur och resultat från fallstudien. Det framkom att Value Stream Costing (VSC) är den mest lämpliga kalkyleringsmetoden för produktionsflöden med kundanpassade produkter som uppnått en hög mognadsgrad av Lean. Förkalkyleringen på fallföretaget är beroende av tillförlitliga operationstider, vilket tagits fram på fallföretaget samtidigt som en generell arbetsprocess utarbetats. Operationstiderna togs i detta fall fram genom videoupptagning av produktionsmomenten samt efterföljande analys i mjukvaran AviX. Genom att följa den generella arbetsprocessen som utarbetats erhålls både ett bra underlag till förkalkylering samt ständiga förbättringar i produktionsflödet. Eftersom forskning visar att Lean bör implementeras i hela organisationen om full fördel med Lean ska uppnås, kan VSC vara en utmärkt kalkyleringsmetod för att komma ifrån föråldrade, traditionella kalkyleringsmetoder samtidigt som denna kalkyleringsmetod förenklar kalkylering i produktion av kundanpassad karaktär. / Since the manufacturing industry is heading for a higher level of customization and implementation of Lean, at the same time as outmoded traditional costing methods is still used in modern industrial organizations, it is interesting to explore the relations between production flows of customized character, Lean and different costing methods. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the cost precision in the preliminary calculation for a product flow of customer adapted and Lean character, and to describe a generalizable work process for this. The purpose is also to develop general recommendations regarding the choice of costing methods by, on a basis of the character of this production, a comparative analysis of costing methods (traditional costing methods, ABC and Lean accounting/VSC). Through a literature study and a case study of a production flow with a high level of variety and influence from Lean, both of the purposes has been fulfilled. The case study has been accomplished through interviews and observations. Problems and positive elements that according to literature characterize the production of customized products have also been found in the case company. That connection has been used to support the analysis of the relations. The relations between costing methods, Lean and production flows of customized character has been analyzed through a comparison between findings in literature and results from the case study. It has been found that Value Stream Costing (VSC) is the most appropriate costing method for production flows of customized products that has reached a high maturity level of Lean. The preliminary costing is dependent on reliable operation times which have been produced on the case study company, while a general work process has been developed. The operation times were in this case identified through video recordings of the production moments and a following analysis in the software AviX. By following the general work process that has been developed, useful material for preliminary costing and continuous improvements in the production flow will be obtained. Since research is showing that Lean should be implemented in the whole organization if full advantages of Lean shall be obtained, VSC is found to be an ideal costing method to replace outmoded, traditional costing methods at the same time as this costing method simplifies costing in production flows of customized character.

Réorganiser les services de réadaptation destinés aux enfants : utilisation d'une recherche-action participative pour documenter un nouveau modèle de services

Cette thèse a pour but de documenter la réorganisation des services effectuée au programme Enfants et adolescents (PEA) du Centre de réadaptation Estrie, Sherbrooke. Une démarche de recherche-action participative (RAP) est utilisée afin de collaborer au développement, à l’implantation et à l’évaluation d’un nouveau modèle de services visant à accroître l’accessibilité et la qualité des services de réadaptation offerts aux enfants ayant une déficience physique. Spécifiquement, les objectifs sont : 1) de documenter les retombées de la réorganisation des services; 2) de réaliser une analyse critique du processus de changement. Des méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives sont utilisées afin d’atteindre ces objectifs. Tout d’abord, la Mesure des processus de soins (MPOC) documente la perception de la qualité avant (2007), pendant (2008) et après (2009) l’implantation du nouveau modèle de services. Au total, cet outil est employé auprès de 222 familles et 129 intervenants. À quatre reprises, les intervenants et les gestionnaires répondent également à un questionnaire sur leurs perceptions des forces, des faiblesses, des opportunités et des menaces au PEA. En 2008 et en 2009, des focus groups et des entrevues téléphoniques sont réalisées auprès des familles (n=5), des intervenants (n=19) et des gestionnaires (n=13) afin de documenter leurs perceptions sur le processus de changement et sur les retombées de la réorganisation des services. Quant à l’observation participante, elle permet de recueillir de l’information sur le processus de réorganisation des services tout au long de ces trois années. Enfin, les informations recueillies sont analysées à l’aide de différentes approches, dont des tests statistiques et des analyses de contenu utilisant une grille de codification inspirée de la théorie des systèmes d’actions organisées. Les résultats indiquent que davantage d’enfants reçoivent des services en 2009 en comparaison à 2007. De plus, la qualité des services s’est maintenue selon les perceptions évaluées par la MPOC (article 1). L’utilisation d’interventions de groupe contribue fort probablement à augmenter le nombre d’enfants qui reçoivent des services, mais plusieurs défis doivent être adressés afin que cette modalité d’intervention soit réellement efficiente (article 2). Les résultats font ressortir que le processus de réorganisation des services est complexe. L’évaluation des forces, des faiblesses, des opportunités et des menaces d’un programme, de même que l’implication des acteurs dans le processus de développement d’un nouveau modèle de services, favorisent l’amélioration continue de la qualité (article 3). Or, les facilitateurs et les obstacles à l’implantation du nouveau modèle de services évoluent durant la réorganisation des services. Considérant cela, il est important de poser les actions nécessaires afin de soutenir le changement tout au long du processus (article 4). En résumé, cette thèse contribue à l’avancement des connaissances en réadaptation en comblant une lacune dans les écrits scientifiques. En effet, peu de projets visant le développement et l’implantation de nouveaux modèles de services sont évalués et documentés. Pourtant, des modèles tels que celui développé par le PEA semblent prometteurs afin d’améliorer l’accessibilité, et éventuellement, la qualité des services de réadaptation chez l’enfant. / This thesis aims at documenting the reorganization of services that took place within the programme Enfants et adolescents (PEA) of the Centre de réadaptation Estrie, Sherbrooke. Participatory action research (PAR) is used to collaborate in the development, implementation and evaluation of a new model of service delivery aimed at increasing the accessibility and quality of rehabilitation services offered to children with physical disabilities. Specifically, the objectives are to : 1) evaluate outcomes of the service reorganization, and 2) critically analyze the change process. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies are used. First, the Measures of processes of care (MPOC) are utilized to document quality-related perceptions before (2007), during (2008) and after (2009) the implementation of the new service delivery model. In total, these tools are utilized with 222 families and 129 clinicians. On four occasions, clinicians and administrators also responded to a questionnaire on the program’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. In 2008 and 2009, focus groups and phone interviews are conducted with families (n=5), clinicians (n=19) and administrators (n=13) to document their perceptions of the change process and the service reorganization outcomes. Participatory observation allowed collecting data during the whole process of service reorganization. Finally, all the data collected are analyzed using different approaches, such as statistical tests and content analysis using an emerging coding grid inspired from the organized action systems theory. Results indicated that the program served more children in 2009 compared to 2007. Moreover, service quality was maintained according to perceptions evaluated with the MPOC (article 1). The utilization of intervention groups probably contributed to the increased number of children receiving services, but many challenges have to be overcome to ensure effective use of this service delivery method (article 2). Results highlight that reorganizing services is a complex process. Evaluating strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a new program, as well as the involvement of stakeholders to develop a new model of service delivery, contribute to quality improvement efforts (article 3). However, the facilitators and barriers to the implementation of a new model of service delivery evolved during the reorganization process, and it is essential to take the required actions to sustain changes through the transformation process (article 4). In summary, this thesis contributes to increasing the knowledge in rehabilitation by providing information in an area of the literature where little has been published. Indeed, few projects aiming at developing and implementing new models of service delivery are evaluated and documented. Models, such as the one developed by the PEA, seem interesting to increase accessibility, and eventually, the quality of rehabilitation services for children.

Modelling of cosmic ray modulation in the heliosphere by stochastic processes / Roelf du Toit Strauss

The transport of cosmic rays in the heliosphere is studied by making use of a newly developed modulation model. This model employes stochastic differential equations to numerically solve the relevant transport equation, making use of this approach’s numerical advantages as well as the opportunity to extract additional information regarding cosmic ray transport and the processes responsible for it. The propagation times and energy losses of galactic electrons and protons are calculated for different drift cycles. It is confirmed that protons and electrons lose the same amount of rigidity when they experience the same transport processes. These particles spend more time in the heliosphere, and also lose more energy, in the drift cycle where they drift towards Earth mainly along the heliospheric current sheet. The propagation times of galactic protons from the heliopause to Earth are calculated for increasing heliospheric tilt angles and it is found that current sheet drift becomes less effective with increasing solar activity. Comparing calculated propagation times of Jovian electrons with observations, the transport parameters are constrained to find that 50% of 6 MeV electrons measured at Earth are of Jovian origin. Charge-sign dependent modulation is modelled by simulating the proton to anti-proton ratio at Earth and comparing the results to recent PAMELA observations. A hybrid cosmic ray modulation model is constructed by coupling the numerical modulation model to the heliospheric environment as simulated by a magneto-hydrodynamic model. Using this model, it is shown that cosmic ray modulation persists beyond the heliopause. The level of modulation in this region is found to exhibit solar cycle related changes and, more importantly, is independent of the magnitude of the individual diffusion coefficients, but is rather determined by the ratio of parallel to perpendicular diffusion. / PhD (Space Physics), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013

The main focus of this study concerns the contribution of focalisation to the creation of fictional worlds through the combination of the “building blocks” of a fictional world, namely the central focalising and focalised character(s), focalised social contexts, events and spaces, in Hermann Hesse’s Demian (1919), Narziß und Goldmund (1930), E.L. Doctorow’s Welcome to Hard Times (1960) and Homer & Langley (2009). The relationship between the focalisers and their social contexts influence their human, subjective perspectives and represented perceptions of their textual actual worlds. Focalisation is constructive in the synergistic relationship between the “building blocks” that leads to the creation of fictional worlds. Chapter 2 discusses the theoretical basis of the thesis which is formed by the concepts of M. Ryan, L. Doležel, R. Ronen and T.G. Pavel with regard to possible worlds and fictional worlds. G. Genette’s and M. Bal’s theories provide the foundation of this study with regard to this concept as regards focalisation. Chapter 3 contextualises focalisation and fictional worlds as possible worlds in Hesse’s and Doctorow’s fiction and as such constitutes part of a twofold basis for the following analyses and comparisons. Four textual analyses of the individual novels by Hesse and Doctorow then follow. In the textual analysis of Demian the notions of M. Bal, M. Ryan and A. Nünning provide a theoretical basis that is specifically relevant for the argument that through his consciousness the individual, Emil Sinclair, creates the fictional world, i.e. by “transforming” textual actual world components into individualised fictional world ones. The views of Viktor Frankl, feminist activists against prostitution such as M. Farley, M.A. Baldwin and C.A. MacKinnon as well as the views of Talcott Parsons (in conjunction with those of G.M. Platt and N.J. Smelser) offer a theoretical underpinning for the analysis of the social context as the product of the mindset in the community in Doctorow’s Welcome to Hard Times and the mindset of the focaliser, Blue, that concurs with the mindset of the community. Focalised events are considered as psychologically credible and as contributing to the fictional world in Hesse’s Narziß und Goldmund. In this textual analysis the theoretical points of departure were based on theories proposed by D. Cohn, M. Ryan and S. Chatman. Concepts advanced by J. Lothe, J. Lotman, H. Lefebvre, L. Doležel, N. Wolterstorff and D. Coste comprise the theoretical basis of the analysis of social spaces in Doctorow’s Homer & Langley. Chapter 8 consists of comparative analyses of the said focalised “building blocks” of Hesse’s and Doctorow’s novels. The analyses and comparisons argue that focalising characters “filter” their actual worlds and “transform” them through their individualistic and subjective representations, as actual people do. Even if characters are “non-actual individuals” their mindsets or physical, social and mental properties (Margolin, 1989:4) are like those of actual people, i.e. “psychologically credible”. Ryan (1991:45) identifies “psychological credibility” or “a plausible portrayal of human psychology” as an “accessibility relation”, i.e. one that allows the mental properties of a fictional character to be accessible from and possible for the actual world. The interaction between a focalising character and his social context that affects his consciousness and focalisation is comparable to the interaction between a hypothetical actual person and his social world, that would also influence his mindset and how he communicates about the actual world. Perspectives of characters such as Sinclair, Blue, Goldmund and Homer Collyer are recognisable to hypothetical actual world readers as psychologically credible. In the light of Bal’s (1990:9) argument that the whole text content is related to the (focalising) character(s), one could say that the elements of a textual actual world become, as it were, focalised “building blocks” of the fictional world. The central finding is that focalisation contributes to the creation of fictional worlds. The relationship between a fictional world and the actual one becomes apparent in literary texts through focalisation that transforms the textual actual world and its elements, i.e. the central (self-focalising) character, the social context, events and space(s), through a focaliser’s consciousness. The focaliser’s consciousness in Hesse’s and Doctorow’s fiction is marked by psychological credibility. A fictional world is comparable to the actual world with regard to other accessibility relations that Ryan (cf. 1991:31-47) identifies, but focalisation specifically allows a fictional world to become possible in actual world terms by creating credibility of this kind. A fictional world is plausible not in mimetic terms, as a factual text presents itself to be, but in possible terms, i.e. through the comparability of human psychology in fictional worlds and the actual world. Focalisation significantly contributes to the creation of a fictional world through the interaction between psychologically credible subjectivity and the imaginary level of the text on which the textual actual world obtains human value through focalisation. The mischiefmakers: woman’s movement development in Victoria, British Columbia 1850-1910

This thesis examines the beginning of Victoria, British Columbia’s, women’s movement, stretching its ‘start’ date to the late 1850s while arguing that, to some extent, the local movement criss-crossed racial, ethnic, religious, and gender boundaries. It also highlights how the people involved with the women’s movement in Victoria challenged traditional beliefs, like separate sphere ideology, about women’s position in society and contributed to the introduction of new more egalitarian views of women in a process that continues to the present day. Chapter One challenges current understandings of First Wave Feminism, stretching its limitations regarding time and persons involved with social reform and women’s rights goals, while showing that the issue of ‘suffrage’ alone did not make a ‘women’s movement’. Chapter 2 focuses on how the local ‘women’s movement’ coalesced and expanded in the late 1890s to embrace various social reform causes and demands for women’s rights and recognition, it reflected a unique spirit that emanated from Victorian traditionalism, skewed gender ratios, and a frontier mentality. Chapter 3 argues that an examination of Victoria’s movement, like any other ‘women’s movement’, must take into consideration the ethnic and racialized ‘other’, in this thesis the Indigenous, African Canadian, and Chinese. Lo scopo della presente ricerca è studiare il peso del fattore umano nei tempi di reazione alla guida. I tempi di reazione son stati studiati sin dalle origini della Psicologia sperimentale, tuttavia se applicati alla guida risulta obsoleto a causa delle specifiche condizioni in cui la reazione si svolge, ai cambiamenti del traffico moderno e ai nuovi dispositivi di supporto intelligente. In letteratura emerge chiaramente l’influenza sul tempo di reazione delle aspettative, della salienza della risposta, della percezione del rischio, dei carichi cognitivi e delle condizioni di rilevazione. La presente ricerca si prefigge di affrontare l’impatto e le modalità di influenza di questi aspetti psicologici sui tempi di reazione alla guida. In particolare i dati registrati in condizioni di guida ecologica reale saranno usati per a) studiare l’influenza delle aspettative sui processi attentivi, emozionali e di presa di decisione alla guida in risposta al pericolo, e b) per valutare l’influenza di diversi livelli di realismo di simulazioni e simulatori virtuali sui processi psicologici che determinano l’IPTR. I risultati mostrano differenze significative nelle diverse fasi che compongono l’IPTR nelle diverse condizioni. I simulatori di guida si sono rivelati avere una validità relativa, ma non assoluta rispetto ai processi attivati nelle condizioni ecologiche, dimostrandosi però in grado di ricreare e modificare coerentemente i processi di avvistamento del pericolo in funzione della prevedibilità dello stesso; rendendoli strumenti utili per l’apprendimento. La ricerca fornisce informazioni sul funzionamento dei processi cognitivi ed emotivi alla guida utili per la ricostruzione degli incidenti, la sicurezza e la prevenzione stradale. / The aim of the present research is to study the role of human factor in a salient driving ability for road accident prevention, that is reaction time to danger. Reaction times (RTs) have been investigated since the origin of experimental Psychology, however when applied to driving, the values became obsolete due to modern driving conditions and interaction with advance driving automatic systems and devices. The influence of expectation, urgency, risk perception, cognitive load and driving conditions on the process that determine RTs have been steadily proven in literature. The present research aims to tackle the influence of these factors on RTs while driving. In particular data measured in real-life driving are used to a) study the influence of expectation on attention, emotions and decision making process, and b) assess the influence of virtual settings with different levels of realism, on the psychological process that determine RTs. A specific task that manipulate driver’s expectations was created to assess the influence of attention and decision making process in the different context on RTs. Results show significant differences in the RTs phases, for different situation. Driving simulators with different levels of realism proved to not have absolute validity, but rather relative on the meanings and learning process in detecting danger and deciding what response foster; giving us interesting information for drivers education, road safety and accident reconstruction.
