Influência da agregação larval na história de vida de Ascia monuste orseis (Godart, 1819) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) / Influence of larval aggregation on life-history traits of Ascia monuste orseis (Godart, 1819) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae)

Santana, Alessandra Figueiredo Kikuda 25 April 2012 (has links)
In insects, the gregarious habit has been shown to improve foraging and defense against predation to both larval and adult stages. Egg clusters could also be beneficial through increased larval hatching. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that egg clusters and larval aggregations of the neotropical butterfly Ascia monuste orseis (Godart, 1819) (Pieridae) - a subspecies that uses Brassicaceae as hosts - lead to several benefits from both bi- and tri-trophic perspectives. Larval and adult performances, food assimilation by the larvae, egg viability, as well as protection against natural enemies were assessed from individuals reared either isolated or aggregated. The behavior of larval aggregations was also examined with respect to predation risk, as well as the corresponding larval defensive behaviors after enemy attack. Four treatments with different larval aggregation sizes were assigned (1, 7, 15 e 30 larvae) to assess larval performance and food utilization in the laboratory. In the field, three treatments were assigned (1, 10 e 50 larvae) to evaluate the effects of group size on predation and parasitoidism. Egg performance was examined through egg clusters of different sizes in a greenhouse. Gregarious larvae developed faster, especially in early instars, and became more fecund females than solitary larvae; however, the latter attained larger body size than the former. Under laboratory conditions, survival did not differ among treatments. Lower food ingestion per capita was observed in gregarious larvae, with no cost in food assimilation. The viability of eggs increased as egg aggregation size increased. The lower per capita predation in larger larval aggregations than smaller groups conferred higher protection to A. monuste orseis larvae against natural enemies, through the dilution effects among individuals of the group. Parasitoidism was more intense in small-sized larvae while late instars were more susceptible to predators, regardless of aggregation size. Similar to species with solitary habit, behavioral events which involved head movements as searching and feeding were more dangerous to A. monuste orseis larvae compared to resting and walking. Presumed defensive behaviors were observed in all instars and treatments. Thus, the benefits of aggregation in A. monuste orseis can be seen especially in the egg stage and in first instars, as it reduces egg mortality and larval vulnerability to natural enemies. These benefits probably overcome some costs, such as interference competition in the late instars. Taken together, the results show that egg failure and top-down effects constitute selective pressures in maintaining egg and larval aggregation in A. monuste orseis, by providing better performance from a bi-trophic perspective and increased probability of individual survival from a tri-trophic perspective when compared to solitary individuals.

Studies towards the synthesis of bioactive natural products and development of new synthetic methods / Approches synthétiques de produits naturels bioactifs et développement de nouvelles méthodes de synthèse

Khanizeman, Rabi'ah Nisha 06 June 2017 (has links)
It has been estimated that more than half of all approved drugs, from the period 1981 to 2014, are either natural products or their derivatives. This, thus, indicates that natural products (NP), together with natural product derived and natural product inspired structures are significant as sources for potential leads towards the discovery of new drugs. The introduction of this thesis thereby highlights the importance of natural products in the field of drug discovery. In addition, the introduction emphasizes on the importance of natural products as a field of research. This is as the synthesis of natural products can result in the development of new synthetic methods which can then be applied to a broader range of applications across the field of chemistry. This new information, thus, bridges a gap in the scientific knowledge and allows for progress in science. Therefore the content of this thesis describes the syntheses and development of new synthetic methods towards bioactive natural products containing 1,3-amino alcohol, 1.3-diamine, THP-ring as well as tri-aryl ethylene unit which represent the key themes of (+)-negamycin (Chapter 1), (-)-cernuine and (+)-cermizine D (Chapter 2), enigmazole A (Chapter 3) and tamoxifen (Chapter 4), respectively.

Localized corrosion study of aluminum alloy 7475-T761 in sulfate medium using global and local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Ferrari, Jean Vicente 20 July 2011 (has links)
Aluminum alloys used in the aerospace industry with structural purpose exhibit a complex microstructure due to thermal and mechanical treatments they are submitted for improving their strength. The microstructure of these alloys is characterized by the presence of a great number of intermetallic (IM) particles, the electrochemical activity of which is different from the matrix leading to the onset of localized corrosion phenomena associated with local galvanic cells. In the last decade local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) has been used as a powerful tool to elucidate local features associated with corrosion and also to study theoretical issues related to current and potential distributions at electrode surfaces and their correlation with surface reactivity. This technique is based on the calculation and analysis of different local impedances acquired by a bi-electrode probe positioned in the vicinity of the electrode surface. The aim of the present work is to study localized corrosion of Al alloy 7475-T761, used with structural purpose in aircraft wings and fuselages, in sulfate containing media using global electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and LEIS associated with microstructural characterization by SEM/EDS. The results of the investigations with the global techniques together with the microstructural characterization confirmed that local pH increasing at the matrix/IM interface due to the cathodic reaction on the IMs is the most important cause for the localized corrosion of the alloy. This process leads to local dissolution of the passive layer and to an important depolarization of the Al oxidation reaction leading to a great increase in the corrosion rate of the metal. On the other hand the investigations using the rotating disk electrode (RDE) revealed that sulfate ions increase the anticorrosion performance of the passive layer and are particularly aggressive at Cu-rich IMs. Regarding the studies with the LEIS technique they were mainly performed using an Al 7475/Cu model electrode aiming to simulate the electrochemical activity at the IM/alloy interface. This approach was new as, to the best of our knowledge, it was the first time a commercial alloy was used as one of the component of a model electrode for local electrochemical investigation. The results were in accordance with theoretical models already developed for the effects of geometry induced current and potential distributions on the electrode surface reactivity, and also showed that the bi-electrode was sensitive to minute change of the electrochemical activity at the interface of the galvanic couple, which was confirmed by SEM/EDS analysis. Another originality of the present work regarding the use of LEIS was that, for the first time, a tri-electrode was used to acquire the local impedance diagrams. This system allows the simultaneous measurement of the normal and radial components of the local current making possible a better comprehension of the local interfacial phenomena. The results of the measurements with this new system were in good agreement with the theoretical model for the local electrochemical response presented in this work, indicating that it can be a valuable tool for a better comprehension of the local interfacial processes.

This feature of MCDA implies that a comprehensive model of a decision maker situation cannot be “created”, but instead, the model should be developed to meet the requirements of the Decision Maker (DM). In general, the development of such a model can only be achieved through an iterative and interactive process, until the preferences of the decision maker are consistently represented in the model. However, an interactive method is a procedure that consists of an alternation of calculation and discussion stages, which presumes that the decision maker is willing to answer a large number of relatively difficult questions. For instance, one of the main difficulties to be faced when interacting with a Decision Maker in order to build a decision aid procedure is the various parameters’ elicitation of the preference model. Methodology: In this thesis, as an alternative to interactive process, among the main streams of MCDA, a Preference Disaggregation Analysis method was used, which is considered to assess or to infer preference models from the given preferential structures and to address decision-aiding activities to elicit preferential information and to construct decision models from decision examples. Combining Composition Probabilistic of Preference with Data Mining techniques, a proposal of a three-step process is presented: attribute selection; clustering; and classification. The first and the second ones are data mining tasks and the last one is a multicriteria task. Purpose: This thesis aims to present a new approach with a Data Mining Layer (attribute selection and/or clustering) in Composition Probabilistic of Preferences in Trichotomic procedure (CPP-TRI), which combines data mining techniques with a Multicriteria Decision Aid method in classification (sorting) problems. Findings: The decision maker ability to comprehend without powerful tools has been exceeded. Therefore, important decisions are often made based not on the information-rich data stored in data repositories, but rather, on intuition of the decision maker. Involved in similar problems, the connections between disaggregation methods and data mining (identifying patterns, extracting knowledge from data, eliciting preferential information and constructing decision models from decision examples) are explored to combine and improve the CPP-TRI Method from Attribute Selection Techniques. / Problem: From Modeling decision maker preferences, the Multicriteria Decision Aid (MCDA) is a field dedicated to the study of real-world decision-making problems that are, usually, too complex and not so well-structured to be considered through the examination of a single point of view (criteria). Étude théorique de l'ionisation simple de la molécule H3+ : application des fonction d'onde tri-centriques du continuum électroniques et états liés / Theoretical study of the simple ionization of the H3+ molecule : application of tricentric electronic wave functions of the continuum and bound states

Obeid, Sabah 18 June 2018 (has links)
This thesis is concerned by the (e,2e) simple ionization of the simplest tri-centric ion existing in nature, which is constituted by three centers forming an equilateral triangle. The electronic structure of H+3 has been largely studied during different periods in the past. Currently, it is the subject of numerous studies concerning specially its dissociative recombination with electrons, and its behavior in the field of intense LASER. The recent developments in the detection techniques has opened the possibility to realize (e,2e) simple ionization experiments where the projectile electron interacts with a gas of H+3 , and the emerging fragments are detected in coincidence. To guide these experiments, we undertake the theoretical challenge to describe this complex process, and prepare the necessary tools for the determination of the multiple differential cross section of this process. This task has needed the development and the application of an original three-center continuum wave function (ThCC), which describes the slow ejected electron in the Coulomb field of the residual tri-centric mono-electronic ion in the frame of a first order Born series procedure. Our calculations have explored the optimal conditions for the ionization process and the influence of the electron-electron correlation. Our results predict, among others, the appearance of quantum interference patterns during the variation of the multiple differential cross section with the scattering direction for a given orientation of the molecule
